The alleged Vincent Diamond is a former Central Florida writer now transplanted to North Carolina. When not at the keyboard, I'm in the dressage ring, trying to pick up the correct diagonal at the trot--usually unsuccessfully. Diamond gleefully buys smutty periodicals for “research materials” and lists them on a Schedule C every year. The IRS has yet to question this deduction.

Interesting premise for a book, but all the stuff that made it sound interesting - the animal rescues - was shoved into the background.

I didn't get to know any of the characters. Never really get inside their head to know what they are thinking, unless it is Brandon's lustful thoughts.

And I got tired of hearing how slender Ramon is. The word was very overused, as was saying how full their eyes were.

Despite the few pages, I had a hard time finishing this one.

3.5 Kisses!

Vincent Diamond is a new author for me. I really liked the author’s smooth writing and I found myself easily wrapped up in the characters’ lives.

The blurb does a good job at describing the story, so I won’t rehash a lot of it. Since his father’s death, Brandon has lost a lot. He had to give up a job he loved to run his father’s store with his sister. His lover was unable to stay with a grieving Brandon and left him brokenhearted. Although he’s close to his sister and has friends, Brandon is lonely and longs to have someone special to love and depend on.

When the UPS driver, Ramon, finds an injured Hawk on Brandon’s property, the two men set out to hopefully save the Hawk’s life. A friendship slowly starts to develop while a heated attraction burns between them. Even though they’ll kiss and hold each other, Ramon always seems to push Brandon aside once things start to get heavy or serious between them. When Brandon finds out that Ramon is dealing with an abusive ex-boyfriend who still wants Ramon in his life, Brandon watches Ramon struggle with his own choices, Brandon wonders if he’s setting himself for his own heartbreak.

I really liked this book. I enjoyed the relationship between Brandon and Ramon. Brandon has given up so much in his life and his loneliness really stood out and made me hope that he’d find someone special in his life. He’s an honorable character who always does the right thing, even if it means he’ll have to sacrifice his own happiness for others. He’s got a heart of gold and is just an all around likeable man. Once he meets Ramon, he begins to feel again. Brandon allows himself to hope that there will be something special between them, but with Ramon’s past and issues, he knows that he can once again be hurt. Like Brandon, I really liked Ramon. He’s a sweet man who has his own goals in life he wishes to achieve. Even though he really likes Brandon, he’s plagued with the issues and past betrayals and abuse from his ex-boyfriend. I really wanted Ramon to kick his ex out of his life for good and give Brandon a chance.

The physical chemistry between the two heroes was quite intense at times. I liked the friendship that was between and enjoyed watching their relationship grow into something special. I do feel the story was a little rushed toward the end. I would have liked for the book to have been longer and some of the things going on not wrapped up so quickly. Other than this, I enjoyed reading about these two men and hope that one day the author will continue writing more about these characters in the future. Recommended!

You don’t find out much about Ramon in this story beyond what he tells Brandon, but I appreciated the pace of the story. Brandon is still not over his father’s death two years prior. At the time his sister quite college to come and help him run a feed/supply story, but they ended up selling the family farm to pay the bills. As well, when Brandon fell into a deep depression following his father’s death, his boyfriend left him. He’s hooked up now and then since, but isn’t sure a permanent relationship is in the cards for him. However with the UPS guy shows up and rescues an injured baby hawk, Brandon is smitten. However the first day they spend time together riding, Ramon gives off some weird yes/no vibes leaving Brandon confused but Ramon keeps coming back, but finally confesses he has a boyfriend. Oops.

Brandon backs off, hurt that he feels Ramon was playing him, and even after Ramon leaves his abusive boyfriend, he still can’t seem to make a clean break causing Brandon to back off even more. Of course eventually it works out. It is a romance. But I liked that while Brandon wanted Ramon, he was prepared to wait until the guy had his act together. Ramon is only in his early 20′s, a college student and Brandon is 30, and this shows in their behaviour. Ramon is quick to flirt and push things even while with his boyfriend, whereas Brandon is the one to make him back-off. It’s how you imagine a younger man being more impetuous and ruled by hormones than logic.

I wish the abuse had been addressed a bit more. Several times at the beginning Ramon acts nervous that Brandon is mad at him, but then later he’s fine and seems to have suffered no ill-effect from being in an abusive relationship. But as the story is told only from Brandon’s POV you really don’t know what the whole story is.

This author is always able to bring to life people suffering from personal loss and that pervading sense of sadness and mourning. You get the sense for Brandon’s loss even two years later. It’s not longer that overwhelming depression, but that gray cloud that exists over your life on a day-to-day basis. Ramon is less well-drawn but his care and compassion for animals comes through in his treatment of the injured hawk and his college major of vet technician. Readers who prefer a more character driven story that moves at a bit more sedate pace, will appreciate this story.
