IL THRILLER CHE SOGNI
Mi è piaciuto davvero tanto, il che è una gran bella soddisfazione, considerando che il primo libro della serie non mi aveva convinta del tutto (qui la recensione).
La narrazione è di una scorrevolezza unica, tanto da farmi desiderare che più thriller fossero scritti allo stesso modo. Il mistero è intricato al punto giusto: ci sono sì tanti personaggi, molti dei quali trascurabili, ma in effetti è proprio la loro presenza a rendere possibile il camuffamento del colpevole, la cui identità è davvero inimmaginabile (si tratta di ).
La fluidità del racconto, unita alla curiosità di scoprire la verità, mi ha spinta a leggerlo a una velocità impressionante - c'era pur sempre il matrimonio della mia migliore amica in mezzo, eh! Ciò significa che la complessità della trama ha stimolato la mia attenzione piuttosto che inibirla, intrecciando tra loro ben tre casi: oltre ai furti a The Hill, l'assassinio dell'agente immobiliare Natasha e l'omicidio dei coniugi Carmichael. Aggiungete al mix l'impatto emotivo prodotto dal coinvolgimento dei personaggi ricorrenti (Ffion e Leo, Allie e il piccolo Harris), le cui dinamiche relazionali influiscono pesantemente sul corso delle indagini.
Come ciliegina sulla torta, un'interessante riflessione morale, neppure troppo implicita, sulla dicotomia tra apparenza e realtà, sui pregiudizi che gravano su chi appartiene a un ceto sociale inferiore e sul fatto che non sia tutto oro quel che luccica.
Ma sai che facciamo? Arrotondiamo le 4,5 stelline a 5, va! E mi sa che torno indietro a leggere il secondo volume della serie...

Okay, forse non è stata proprio una buona idea, visto che il secondo libro è sì coinvolgente e innegabilmente ben congegnato, ma, onestamente, mi aspettavo qualcosa di più, sia dai segreti dei concorrenti sia dall'identità e dal movente del colpevole.

"Le case che sogni" di Clare Mackintosh è un thriller psicologico che ti cattura fin dalle prime pagine, pubblicato in Italia da Libreria Pienogiorno. La storia gira intorno a The Hill, un complesso residenziale super esclusivo nel Cheshire, dove dietro a ville pazzesche e vite apparentemente perfette si nascondono invidie, segreti e un sacco di bugie. Il libro merita 4 stelle su 5, ma il voto non è pieno per colpa di una scelta editoriale abbastanza penalizzante per noi lettori italiani.
La trama entra nel vivo quando una serie di furti inizia a sconvolgere la sicurezza del quartiere. Incontriamo personaggi come Allie, che farebbe di tutto pur di essere accettata dall'élite del posto, e Natasha, un'agente immobiliare che conosce fin troppo bene i segreti di quelle case. Chi legge si ritrova catapultato in un gioco psicologico continuo, dove ogni volta che si apre una porta salta fuori qualche scheletro nell'armadio.
Clare Mackintosh sa decisamente come gestire la suspense: il ritmo è alto, i punti di vista cambiano spesso e gli indizi vengono seminati benissimo. Inoltre, la critica a questo mondo di ricchi ossessionati dalle apparenze e dallo status sociale funziona alla perfezione. Il mistero sul perché il ladro colpisca proprio quelle case tiene incollati alla pagina.
Il vero problema del libro, però, non ha nulla a che fare con la bravura dell'autrice, ma riguarda come la saga è stata gestita in Italia. Questo romanzo è in realtà il terzo capitolo della serie incentrata sulla detective Ffion Morgan, ma è il primo a essere stato tradotto da noi. Di conseguenza, ci si ritrova in mezzo a dinamiche investigative già avviate. Il passato dei poliziotti e i loro rapporti personali vengono dati totalmente per scontati, lasciando un po' disorientati. Anche se la storia dei furti a The Hill si chiude e si capisce senza problemi, lo sviluppo dei protagonisti ne esce penalizzato, costringendoci ad accettare i loro legami senza sapere da dove nascano.
In conclusione, Le case che sogni resta un ottimo thriller, scorrevole e con un mistero solido. Dispiace solo per questa svista editoriale che ci ha privato dei primi due volumi della serie, fondamentali per godersi appieno i personaggi della polizia. Una lettura che consiglio assolutamente, nonostante questo intoppo.
