What if you spent years of your life trying to solve the mystery and then in the end you pretty much lose everything except your autonomy and also your best friend goes emotionally catatonic from grief and your other best friend goes to hell for ten years because it’s YOUR TURN but they don’t want that for you so they knock you unconscious and take your place?

FINALLY!!!! All those months ago when I decided to power my way through this series, I wasn't even sure if I'd make it this far. It was a little intimidating. I'm so glad I decided to give it a go, though, and at this point it's become more difficult to STOP reading. Just like the dramas, these books are far from perfect but have such great characters and an interesting story that pulls you in even when it doesn't make complete sense.
In this last book of the main series we finally wrap up the initial story and get some answers. Mileage may vary on how satisfying these answers are, however, and there are still plenty of questions and plot points left open. Honestly, though, for how convoluted this world is it makes a certain amount of sense and didn't bother me too much.
This book made me cry MULTIPLE times. Even when I knew certain moments were coming...the dialogue and Wu Xie's POV just hit me so hard and I couldn't hold back the tears. I'm both scared and eager to see this part of the series eventually developed into a drama. So long as they cast well, it'll hit even harder.
When I began reading this series, I didn't feel too strongly about Wu Xie. As a drama fan, I already loved him but the books themselves didn't initially do too much to reinforce that affection. As the books went along, however, I feel like we gradually saw more of Wu Xie as he struggled to find the truth and protect the people around him. I love him more than ever now. This curious, snarky little brat who really just wants the best for everyone and TRIES so hard to hold onto that compassion even when it would be so easy to let it go. It's been both captivating and heartbreaking to watch his growth and decline throughout his adventures. I wish I could wrap him in a blanket and keep him safe but I know our boy has a long and painful journey ahead of him still.
Sine the dramas have been made out of sequence, I've gotten this story in bits and pieces so it's very rewarding to finally have the full picture. My plan after finishing the main series was to take a break but I can't lol I've already flown through the 1st New Years Special and have started reading Tibetan Sea Flower which I expect will wreck me.

I read this a few years ago and I just got reminded of this series by my grandparent showing me that they're watching 鬼吹灯 (another graverobbing book made into a film). I barely read novels that has fantastical horror elements but I had enough interest to finish this series. Although the author had some logical flaws towards the end, the world setting in general and the characterizations were very attractive. Storylines of individual characters were clear as well. I have seriously thought about becoming a grave robber (for a few minutes) after reading this.
I knew where the journey was headed and I still cried.
"I hope you know that if you need someone to accompany you to the end, I won't refuse" 😭 Wu Xie, you can't just *say* stuff like that, my poor heart! Devestated!
Love the Iron Triangle so much and can't wait to go on reading.
And the author's notes at the end, especially about Wu Xie: "He is a boy as weak as water, but please don't forget that in harsh winter, the most formless water will become solid ice." ❤️

To be honest, that ending felt very very abrupt. In fact, the very last paragraph didn't feel like the ending to a chapter, let alone a novel or a whole series. But in terms of the story, I quite enjoyed it... There were a few things I would have liked to happen, like perhaps a little, tiny, bit more drama and tension between Kylin and Wu in the last few scenes. But either way, I'm really glad I read this book and I look forward to the sequels.
