THEY SEE WHAT NO ONE ELSE SEES

Every crime scene has a smell. A look. A trail of DNA.

It also has a feel. An emotional residue that lingers... floating unseen, like bacteria in the air, just waiting to be absorbed. To be experienced. To be interpreted.

And only the man and the boy know this.

Veteran major crimes detective, Kate Messenger, has a problem on her hands: six bodies—father, mother, three children and the family dog—all slaughtered in their own home, with not a single clue or a shred of DNA that points to the butcher who killed them. But late one night, as she’s visiting what the newspapers have dubbed the House of Pain, Kate finds a couple of intruders at her crime scene: a man and a young blind boy who have no real explanation for their presence there.

In the hours that follow, Kate will discover that this is no ordinary boy—not by a long shot—and his ability to “read” the lingering residue left the killer and his victims will not only open some old and very tender wounds, but may also help her find a killer who has been watching her every move…

Think of “Linger: Dying is a Wild Night” like that promising first date … the one that ends with a goodnight kiss that “lingers” just a shade longer than expected, and leaves you thinking about what it meant and where the next date might lead.

It takes a subtle touch to produce pacing that provides a “fast read” without washing away intricate back story in its wake, and the first in this series of supernatural thrillers by Edward Fallon does so quite well. Characters are developed in the natural flow of events, with important contextual tidbits sprinkled within the interaction — kind of like a hint of spice in a stew that makes the flavor pop, but doesn’t get in the way of the next spoonful.

Kate Messenger’s hard shell is apparent, but the major crime detective’s softer side is revealed in her strained relationship with her father and co-workers, the lasting impact of her mother’s horrific murder, and the angst of a failed marriage that still eats at her.

Noah Weston’s skeptical nature and painfully earned caution with the police balanced by his obvious devotion to his young charge, Christopher, and commitment to their quest.

Young Christopher — himself a victim of horrific violence — both a conduit of lost souls and a young, vulnerable soul in and of himself.

The three thrown together by the brutal massacre of a family that is tied to the same horrible loss they each experienced. Both Kate’s instincts and forces beyond their control lead them to answers … and more questions.

Kind of like that goodnight kiss.

An obvious first salvo, “Linger: Dying is a Wild Night” feels both like a stand-alone product, and a first step that will lead down an unpredictable, entertaining path. It will sate both the mystery fan, and those who enjoy the kind of paranormal fare that takes conventional plot twists and turns them back on themselves.

Edward Fallon gives a novel and haunting emotional definition to the word family in his new thriller LINGER: DYING IS A WILD NIGHT. We get taken on a dark and twisted roller coaster ride of a story with three fascinatingly drawn and distinct characters that come to form one unit. The characters have been brought together by crimes so devastating that their emotions not only continue to linger upon them after being a part of such horror, but they also uniquely develop and expand their perception of the driving force in how they live their lives. LINGER is a thriller that reads to me on the level of a powerful true-crime novel. It is that good and I recommend it highly.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND:

Well-written dialogue, narrative and a story packed with emotion, shapes LINGER: Dying is a Wild Night a compelling psychological thriller.

As much as this book scared me at times, I could not put it down.

The plot is suspenseful and mysterious, and the characters are well developed with flaws, and backstories that will pique your interest upon introduction, leaving the reader to want to know more about each of them.

This is the first book in the LINGER series and I look foward to next ones.

Linger: Dying Is A Wild Night is a captivating story that draws the reader into the suspense. Once you begin reading you'll have to finish. The characters are intriguing and likable. The plot twists and sends the reader into surprising directions, while the fluent writing of Edward Fallon easily pulls you along for the ride. It is an excellent first story for the Linger series, comfortably setting the stage for future adventures.

I liked the paranormal aspects of the storyline, using the boy Christopher as the medium, from whom all else stems. The supernatural occurrences are described in a succinct and believable manner, and make one stop to ponder some questions. What are our minds capable of? Can we experience more if we push limitations? How can we use our minds for good? I always enjoy a story that stretches my imagination. Like any good suspense drama, we have gruesome murderers who you'll like to hate, as well as a great last minute reveal.

Last but not least, there is a compelling protagonist who will win you over. She is Detective Lieutenant Kate Messenger, a strong willed, decisive, woman who rolls with the tide; willing to do what needs to be done to find a killer, the beast. Encouraged by her actions, the truth is revealed. She stands as a woman who won't be pushed around or tolerate bad behavior, and she manages bad situations with intelligence. During the storyline, you see her character grow, learning with each new development. I whole heartily recommend this book and looking forward to the next.

As a reader, I am probably a writer's worst nightmare. I have a very small attention span and if a book doesn't capture me within the first page or two, I tend to let it go and move on to something else. I am also very wary of new authors, but if a new author can manage to reel me in, I devour everything he/she writes.

That said, it has been a long time since the first line of a book captured my attention, and refused to let it go. With a line like, "By the time they reached the house it was already on fire," how can you not be completely captivated?

Of course, readers know that it takes more than a great first line to make a great book. Linger: Dying is a Wild Night delivers. It offers a strong female protagonist, something desperately needed in this genre, a story line that is, for lack of a better word, intense, and a thrilling conclusion that will leave you breathless and wanting more. Linger will appeal to fans of the paranormal, those who like their horror a bit more extreme, and to anyone who just loves a compelling story with characters you won't soon forget.

I'm always slightly cynical about discovering new authors for whilst nothing compares to discovering a new author or new series that you like, the advent of digital publishing seems to have lowered the quality threshold somewhat. So it was with some trepidation that I started this book, however after just a few pages that fear had gone and I was hooked.

it's been a long time since I could honestly describe a book as unputdownable. This one is.

Setting: California, USA; modern day.
Experienced homicide detective Kate Messenger has just been made lieutenant of her squad - but is fighting misogyny from some in her team and suffering from the breakdown of her marriage and the after-effects of the brutal murder of her police dispatcher mother several years before, an incident that inspired her to become a cop.
Attending the house where an entire family had been brutally murdered recently, Kate encounters a man with a young blind boy standing in the house. The boy, 11-year-old Christopher, seems to be in some form of trance. Kate subsequently discovers that Christopher has a unique gift of being able to 'read' the emotional residue that lingers after a traumatic incident and gather clues as to the perpetrator. The boy then sends these clues telepathically to his companion, who records them as drawings. But Kate also learns that Christopher has gathered clues from the scene of her own mother's death and that the killer is someone who has committed several brutal murders, including an attack on Christopher's foster home where he was left for dead.
As Kate takes advantage of Christopher's abilities, she learns some disturbing things about people close to her....
This is the first book in a series but can certainly be read as a stand-alone. It definitely requires an element of 'willing suspension of disbelief' but I felt quite happy to go along with it in the context of the story. It was a short but very gripping read which I raced through in under a day. Good characters and pretty unpredictable as the story unwound. It will be interesting to read further books in the series to see what the intrepid trio get up to in their continuing search - 9/10.

Okay when I started this book I thought nay this isn't going draw me in and make me read it. I was way wrong. It didn't take long and the book had me hooked and I didn't want to put it down.
Detective Kate Messenger had no idea that her world was about to be turned upside down and twisted all around.
I was sure I had figured out who the killer was, but was wrong. Really enjoyed this book.
I'm expecting a follow up book to tell me more about some of the characters and their continued journey.

I heard so many good things about this new series that I had to give it a try. Knowing it was a thriller with a paranormal element, I started the first chapter with patience and a certain degree of skepticism. I was worried this may be a chase to find a monster lurking in the darkness but no mystical creature equals the unnerving capability of the horror humans can inflict on each other. The flawless writing pulled me in immediately. The images this author creates are so vivid I felt like I was in the center of every scene. The characters are developed with such detail but nothing about them is revealed until the story needs it to be.
The intriguing theme of this story isn't the acceptance of the unknown but the fear that realism can be more terrifying than the unimaginable and if the power of truth can only find its path through innocence. I can't wait to read the continuation of the series.

I received Linger: Dying is a Wild Night free in exchange for an honest review.

The honest truth is I had a blast reading this book. At its heart, this is a fast-paced murder mystery. It also has supernatural elements in the form of telepathy.

The characters are compelling and easy to sympathize with. The murder itself was gruesome enough to be interesting. The supernatural elements were both exciting and creepy.

Linger: Dying Is A Wild Night was well worth my time. The only thing I didn’t like was the fact that it ended. I’m excited to read the next book in the series.

The best compliment I can offer this book (and series) is I’d have thought it worth purchasing. Had I downloaded the sample of Dying is a Wild Night, I’d have absolutely purchased the remainder of the book when the sample ended. And I’d have been satisfied with my purchase.

I was fortunate enough to get my hands on an Advanced Reader Copy of Dying is a Wild Night. This is the first volume of Linger, a series of supernaturally themed thriller novels published by Braun Haus Media. The publisher is dropping the first five novels simultaneously on July 1, so if you enjoy the first (which you probably will), you'll have plenty to look forward to. I wanted to finish all five before posting reviews, because I wanted to try to get a feel for the character arcs.

As the first novel in the series, Dying is a Wild Night has the responsibility of establishing the setting and the rules of this fictional universe. The primary viewpoint character is Kate, a newly-promoted supervisory detective in a midsized California police department. Her investigation into a gruesome multiple murder brings her into contact with Weston, a traveler with an almost pathological distrust of the police, and Weston's pre-teen traveling companion, Christopher. It emerges that the three of them have two things in common. The first is that all three of their lives have been upended by the same serial killer, whom Weston and Christopher have taken to calling "the Beast." Weston's family was massacred by the Beast, Christopher was mutilated and left for dead when the Beast struck his group home, and Kate's mother may have been the Beast's first victim. I mentioned that the novels in the series are supernatural thrillers, and the second thing linking the three characters is that they all seem to be psychic to some degree. (Not to be confused with psychopathic, though there's reason to think the Beast might be both.)

This first volume is the least supernatural of the initial five. The only real supernatural aspect is the three characters' mental affinities. Christopher is the strongest of the three by a fair bit; he's both telepathic and clairvoyant, and able to activate the other two's gifts. Apart from that, which is less paranormal activity than you'd get from an average X-Files episode, the novel is a relatively straightforward murder investigation. That, by the way, isn't an insult; I rather liked the low-weirdness X-Files episodes, and this novel had the feel of one of the better ones.

The pacing is good, and the solution didn't require any improbable coincidences or playing any games with the audience. There isn't much actual character development, but I think that's by design. The story's action unfolds over a fairly short time period, and the goal for this book is, presumably, to set the stage for long term development as the series progresses. It manages to do that, while also being satisfying as a stand-alone story in its own right. When I finished this novel, I was immediately interested in moving on to the next one.

I think, strictly speaking, this series qualifies as "urban fantasy," but it doesn't quite have that vibe, particularly in this book. As I mentioned, the paranormal aspects of this fictional world are less central to this story than in subsequent books. The one criticism I have -- which applies to all five books, but I'm going to make particular note of here as this is the "origins" novel-- is that it's never entirely clear what's going on with the paranormal aspects. Straightforward sci-fi ESP? Something supernatural or religious? I think the answer might be "all of the above," but the mixture or emphasis seems to be different in each one. Part of that is plot-related, with different antagonists having different natures. Part of that is probably because of the way the series was produced. Each of the five original books is written by a different author, all five sharing the same "Edward Fallon" pen name. For the most part, the series hangs together quite well stylistically. It's in the selection and handling of the "villain of the week" that the authors' interests and differing approaches to the paranormal become most obvious, and the lack of clear ground rules becomes most problematic. (Then again, the viewpoint characters don't have much more understanding of what's going on than the readers.) None of that affected my enjoyment of the novels, and I'd recommend all five. Dying is a Wild Night is one of the strongest of them, and is an excellent starting point.

Wow! I thoroughly enjoyed this thriller! It's been a long time since I've read a book that was literally too good to put down. I read all different genres and authors but have struggled lately to find a story to sink my teeth into. Edward Fallon's first of the Linger Series held me spellbound from the first page, with fascinating characters, strong writing, a heart-thumping pace and a plot that kept me riveted to the very end. Thanks for an excellent read, and thank you for making this a series!

Meh!

Three very different people are brought together by a shared ability and a terrifying killer. Their story is a riveting thrill ride that is hard to put down. I found the book well written and quick to read. Was left wanting to dive in to the second book to see where the story goes.

Kate Messenger is investigating the brutal death of an entire family: mother, father, three children, and the family dog. No clues can be found, no murder weapon, no DNA, nothing. She goes by the house one night to discover a light in the house. Upon investigating this strange and unusual occurrence, she stumbles across a blind boy and a man with no explanation as to their presence forthcoming.

How does this murder relate to the murder of Kate’s mom twenty years ago? And how does this little boy know anything about it? What kind of games is the man playing with the boy -- and the police? Why was an apparently squeaky-clean family wiped out so horrifically?

This a nice psychological thriller moving at a good pace. I hated having to put it down, and I loved picking it up again. While I’m not sure I particularly liked the characters, they were certainly drawn empathetically. I could definitely root for them, or most of them, anyway.

While the story is decent enough, the story of the boy and the man, and Kate, too, is far more interesting. Because of the man’s and boy’s presence in the house, there is a huge investigation as to how they’re connected to the killings and what the man has forced the boy into. All of this is the ultimate heart of the story and .

I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to the next in the series. It does go into some very dark places but does not dwell there for too long. A very strong four stars.

LOVED this new series opener !! A different type of story for me but one I greatly enjoyed and just flew through. It reminds me a great deal of The Mentalist TV series. It has similar elements where one killer is being sought but there's nothing wrong with unearthing more in the quest.
I really liked Kate, Noah and Christopher. All terrific characters and all with a separate and very interesting story of their own to tell.
Now for the bad points-some silly errors. Because I loved the story so much I'll let them go this time but may not be so charitable if the whole series hasn't been properly edited, especially if I buy the others (as this was a free download promotion). Where was used instead of were, poured and not pored, there were plural apostrophe mistakes which he also got right a lot of the time making it more irritating when he didn't, you're in place of your, wretch and not retch, and and not an. As you can see, daft errors that ought to have been spotted by a professional if I managed to see them all !! (I looked up the terms "flies" which I assume is police slang but I couldn't find it on Google.)
There were some very funny lines in this story as well that appealed to my sense of humour a lot. I'd also love to meet this Tommy Lee Jones character with the dash of Keith Carradine thrown in !!

Another reviewer described the first linger book as a great Pilot episode and I agree. This is a very well written novella with the right amount of action. The author has created three very compelling characters that I am fully invested in. Each one comes across as a real person while at the same time each one is very different from each other. This story gives you just enough of the back story so that you want to read more after the story ends. The mysteries in this book are very interesting and I flew through this book. If I had any issue it would be that the one murder mystery was solved and wrapped up a little too quickly but this is part of a series and it is not a large problem. Overall I loved this story and look forward to reading the next installments. I highly recommend this book.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect going in to this but it was actually quite a pleasant read. Odd, for sure, but the main characters were interesting. They could have benefited from a little more depth, and the villain wasn't exactly hard to figure out but the story itself was fun to follow.

Amazing!

This book started out like almost any police/murder mystery novel and then took an immediate tire-screeching turn into the Twilight Zone.

Kate, the police Lieutenant, is in the midst of investigating a horrendous murder or a seemingly innocent and randomly chosen family. She encounters an older man and an 11 year old blind boy at the scene after having a hunch she needed to go back for a second look. Twilight Zone or Through the Looking Glass - your call. But things get strange very quickly afterwards. I think I found a new series to enjoy!

This first book in the series has left me wanting more! Part thriller, part police procedural, and a hefty dose of the supernatural make Linger a scary ,atmospheric read. I love the three main characters and the dynamic between them. Bring on book two!
