At its heart, this book is a Cinderella retelling, and I thought it was done really well.
Jasmine has completely closed herself off from love and the outside world with being trapped in an abusive relationship with seemingly no way out. August, on the other hand, is completely focused on his work and has little time for anything else. When these two meet, it’s very much a Prince Charming comes to the rescue moment. They spend the night together, only for Jasmine to disappear the next morning, leaving behind her perfume - her very own version of Cinderella’s glass slipper.
The story was really well written, and I felt so sorry for Jasmine as we see everything she has been through and the emotional turmoil she continues to face. August was definitely giving boy-next-door, but make him hot!
If you love an emotional rollercoaster, cheesy romantic lines and a little bit of grumpy x sunshine, this is one to read!

I enjoyed the way the story starts with such an unusual meeting and then leaves August wondering what happened to Jasmine. The mystery surrounding her disappearance kept me interested, while their connection felt believable despite how quickly it developed. I also liked that the story deals with some serious issues without losing its romantic focus. Overall, a touching second-chance romance with plenty of suspense along the way.

Not that great.
Let me start with the good stuff. The writing itself is pretty good, I will probably read something else from this author, hopefully find something better suited to me. Something with more substance.
Now the not-so-good stuff…nothing really happened. It had no angst, no plot, no tropes that give a romance something to keep the reader involved. The female main character, I just couldn’t relate to her. The male main character, there’s potential there but he seemed wishy-washy. Both of them could have used some more character development.
I wanted to like this, the premise looked promising.
Spoilers ahead, just saying. This is a summary:
They met as he saved her from her abusive ex-boyfriend. They had sex. It was good. She sneaks out, leaving a note. She wants to keep him safe from the abuser, so she stays anonymous to him. He tries to find her, but can’t. She sends him gifts of art in the post, letting him know she wants something after her ex is prosecuted. He wants her, too, but really, he can’t wait a couple months for the legal process so he goes out with a blind date and they have sex. Repeatedly. For the entire time she is at trial. He is pining for her? Yeah, right, not buying it.
They get a second chance when she goes to his hospital for a wrist sprain and they begin a relationship. No drama with his fuck-buddy, it doesn’t even describe the conversation. No scenes where either becomes jealous. No angst. No misunderstanding requiring a heart to heart and groveling. Seriously! Nothing happens. 🙄

This is how you do a modern Cinderella retelling.
Forget about evil step-parents or step-sisters, that's passé and cliché. Instead, give me an abusive relationship, a handsome prince who just happens to be walking by at exactly the right time—a kindhearted nerd who's not afraid to hit her abuser.
I've never been much of a romance reader, but Alexandra Orchard's writing is just so smooth. She has this amazing ability to pull me into her stories and get me completely hooked.
I really, really enjoyed this one. If you're looking for a modern Cinderella retelling with a sweet romance, a lovable nerdy love interest, and a story that will pull you in, definitely give this one a chance!
