4 stars for a cerebral murder mystery, set in present day Japan. The author's books have been bestsellers in Japan. This is book 5 in the series, and it is the only book that I have read in the series.
It worked for me as a stand alone. The translation was excellent.
There is only one murder. The investigation starts when a body is washed ashore from the sea, with one bullet wound in the head.
The police investigators:
Chief Inspector Kusanagi
Detective Inspector Kishitani
Detection Sergeant Kaoru Utsumi
The dead man is identified as Ryota Uetsuji, who has been reported as missing by Sonoka Shimauchi, his girlfriend.
The police are assisted by Professor Manabu Yukawa, a.k.a. "Detective Galileo" occasional consultant to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department
There is a complicated set of circumstances that lead up to the murder, beginning with a single mother abandoning her baby anonymously to an orphanage. It is actually the Professor who solves the murder, although the police are about to arrest the murderer, before he intervenes.
I recommend it to fans of cerebral mysteries, cozy mystery fans, and translated mystery fans.
There are brief descriptions of domestic violence.

An unusual novel and much shorter than the other Detective Galileo ones. It's a very quick read but ultimately the plot isn't quite as interesting. I worked out the killer and the motive. There were a few clever twists towards the end but I just wasn't as involved in the murder.
However, this book really worked well at filling in a little bit of the back story of Detective Galileo. And whenever the book followed him the story picked up
Also, it's nice that the first Higashino book that I haven't loved 100% was still so enjoyable, and a 4 star, is pretty impressive out of 7 books. And 4 stars is nothing to be sniffed at

Another lesser Higashino, kind of a bummer after the splendor of Silent Parade, our last Detective Galileo translation. This is the third mid Higashino in a row (I also wasn't a fan of A Death In Tokyo) so I am starting to wonder if we have already had all the best ones, especially since they aren't translating them in order.
It's also odd that this digs very deep into Detective Galileo's mother, which also happened to Detective Kaga in last year's release The Final Curtain. The two of them together are an odd pair.
The pacing here is off, and the investigation doesn't make much sense. A murdered man's girlfriend has left town, and we focus entirely on the girlfriend even though the man had many enemies. By the end we have a plot that is almost as complex as a typical Galileo case, but it takes quite a while to get there and the first half is quite slow. If I wasn't such a Higashino devotee I'm not sure I would have finished this one.

A young man has been found dead and his girlfriend is missing. After discovering that the man was abusive, the police suspect that the girlfriend is the murderer. However, she has an unshakable alibi.
I have now read three books in this series, and the only one that I really liked was “The Devotion of Suspect X”. The description of this book is misleading. There is zero detection by Detective Galileo. In fact there is very little police work at all. The book is primarily about the backstories of several adopted children and their birth parents. Yes, there is a murder. But the murderer just confesses in the end. The book is slow, and definitely not a good example of a police procedural.

Keigo Higashino is very good at twisting my expectations. Maybe it's me and my expectations, but he has a way of laying out clearly, far out in advance what and who a story is about and still surprise me to the point of shock.
This is a good story, part of the detective Galileo's series, and meaningful to Galileo's and Kusanagi's story. It is, as usual, richly detailed about Japanese society, and in this case, so much about the women, throughout several decades. It is sometimes frustrating in how non judgmental it is about it, but I will always prefer that, honest portrayals without reforming zeals over the most worthy most earnest pedagogically intentioned fiction...
But it was not one of his best stories at least of the ones that got translated and that I have read- it was still, IMO, better than Silent Parade, easier, the plot almost elegantly simple but still interesting. I will keep reading any of his books that come my way....

ইনভিজিবল হেলিক্স, কেইগো হিগাশিনো। Short review

হিগাশিনোর বইয়ের একটা বড় বৈশিষ্ট্য হলো তার টুইস্ট। ইদানিংকালে পড়া দেশিবিদেশি সব রাইটারদের মধ্যে আমার কাছে হিগাশিনোর গল্পের টুইস্টগুলাই সবচেয়ে বেশি আকর্ষণীয় লাগে।
এই বইয়েও টুইস্ট আছে অন্য অনেক রাইটারের তুলনায় ভালোই বলা যায়। কিন্তু এটা কেইগো হিগাশিনো ক্যাটাগরির টুইস্ট না। হিগাশিনোর বইয়ে যেমনটা এক্সপেক্ট করি, তেমনটা এখানে পাইনি। একদমই সাদামাটা লেগেছে।
ইউকাওয়াকে এই বইয়ে তেমন বুদ্ধির ঝলক দেখানো লাগেনি। কুশানাগিকেও খুব একটা খাটতে দেখা যায়নি, উতসুমিকেও না।
গল্পের শুরুটা পরিচিত, একটা লাশ পাওয়া যায়, তারপর তার প্রেমিকা নিখোঁজ, এরপর অতীতে ফিরে যাওয়া। টুইস্টের পর টুইস্ট আসে ঠিকই, কিন্তু অন্য বইগুলোর মতো সেই শক ভ্যালুটা কাজ করে না।
সিরিজের বাকি বইগুলোর তুলনায় এটাকেই সবচেয়ে নিচে রাখবো।

Invisible Helix is my 11th Keigo Higashino read; and including Invisible Helix, this is my fifth Professor Galileo read.
And I am surprised at how disappointed I am with Invisible Helix. There is no charm in the story telling, there is no character development, the plot arc is totally as per convenience and the mystery was almost non-existent; without the prologue, I could have taken out the 'almost' from the preceding part of this sentence. The only suspense in the novel is the identity of the mother, and twice this issue has been handled with just out of the blue solutions. Readers do not get the opportunity to use their brains for figuring out any part of the mystery. When I tried to use my brain, it was just a waste of time because actually there was no clue strewn in the plot for readers. Surprisingly, even a character like Professor Galileo was lackluster in this book.
The only okay part in Invisible Helix is the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, which still delivered, comparatively, in terms of action and character portrayal, almost akin to its earlier performance. Detective Sergeant Utsumi have always felt like a favourite of Higashino to me, and in Invisible Helix too, I felt the same. Which means, her character shines. On the other hand, Detective Inspector Kishitani has been reduced to a one-dimensional character. I liked how readers could feel the burden of responsibility on Chief Inspector Kusanagi.
To me, the biggest joy of reading a Keigo Higashino is that, irrespective of their genre, the books always come with a subtle but distinct exploration of life and human nature. This is what uplifts the books so much. This is absolutely missing in Invisible Helix, despite having ample opportunity for this exploration.
Another saving grace I can add to this review of Invisible Helix is that despite everything, it's a fast read, so I don't feel like I wasted too much of my reading time. Also, till the first half or so, I had no idea that the author would choose such a lazy way to unravel the mystery, so till then the book was okay.
The book has all the ingredients to make it everything that makes a Keigo Higashino book a Keigo Higashino book, what it needs is a good story telling technique (so much of the story is just told!) and a better way of presenting and solving the mystery.
If this was just a run of the mill mystery or thriller, I would have still rated it 3/5, but my expectations from a Keigo Higashino book is too high too rate this anything beyond 2.5/5, and given my reading experience, I cannot round it of to 3. So where decimal rating is not possible, the rating seen will be 2/5.
I have been stark in my review here as I understand that the copy I am reading is an Uncorrected Digital Galley. I hope my feedbacks help in the finalisation of the published version, and if so, I will be the happiest as Keigo Higashino is a favourite author of mine. I hope the final published version of Invisible Helix will be different than what it currently is in its galley form, though for translated works, I have no idea how this can work.

August 12, 2025Not quite up to the usual standard for this series, although it's usually head and shoulders above most crime writing so this is a hard standard to be held to. Reads a bit more like a novella of the kind that gets a. 5 series designation, with a very straightforward plot.

টোকিওর সাগরে একটা ভাসমান লাশ খুঁজে পায় স্থানীয় পুলিশরা। ভিক্টিম মেইল, ইয়াং এবং মৃত্যুর কারণ পিঠে লাগা গুলি। খোঁজ করতে গিয়ে পুলিশ জানতে পারে লোকটা কিছুদিন যাবৎ নিখোঁজ ছিলো এবং তার লিভ ইন গার্লফ্রেন্ড তার সাথে যোগাযোগ করে না উঠতে পেরে পুলিশ কেস করেছিল। পরে পুলিশ মেয়েটির সাথে যোগাযোগ করতে গিয়ে আবিষ্কার করে মেয়েটিও লাপাত্তা। এইভাবে এই গল্পের শুরু। তারপর গল্প গিয়ে ঠেকে ফিজিসিস্ট মানাবু ইউকাওয়ার দ্বারে।
হিগাশিনো তার ডিটেকটিভ গল্পে মানবিকতার স্পর্শ রাখতে পছন্দ করেন (করতেন?) এবং এই বইয়েও তা উপস্থিত। এই গল্পের শুরু ঠিকঠাক ছিল কিন্তু প্লট কিংবা মূল কাহিনী দাঁড় করানোর পর সেটা সমাপ্তি পর্যন্ত নেয়ার জন্য যে লম্বা টানটা দেয়া হয়েছে সেইটাই সবচেয়ে ক্লান্তিকর লেগেছে। আর সাথে টুইস্টের পর টুইস্ট তো ছিলই, সেটাও ক্ষেত্র বিশেষে আমার জন্য ক্লান্তিকরই ছিল, আনন্যাচারাল! টুইস্ট বলতে গেলে অনেকটা এরকম ছিল: বেশ কিছু সময় আগে টিকটকের একটা রিলস খুব জনপ্রিয় হয়েছিল, পানির মধ্যে বিষ মিশিয়ে দিচ্ছে আরেকজন সেটা পান করে মরে যাচ্ছে কিন্তু দেখা যাচ্ছে মরে যাচ্ছে না আবার জেগে উঠতেছে কুলি করতে করতে, কারণ সে জানতো, টু বি কন্টিনিউড...

ถ้าพูดในแง่คดี เล่มนี้เฉยๆ มาก สู้กาลิเลโอเล่มอื่นไม่ได้เลย แต่ใดๆ ก็ตามให้อภัยได้ทุกอย่างเพราะเป็นติ่งยุคาว่าเซนเซย์ แถมเล่มนี้ยังเผยอดีตของยุคาว่าด้วย แม้จะไม่หมดเปลือกก็ตามทีเหอะ แต่อย่างน้อยก็ได้รู้จักยุคาว่ามากขึ้น (ชีวิตติ่งคอมพลีท)

Câu chuyện này khá thú vị, khi tiến trình điều tra vụ án cũng từng bước gợi mở một phần quá khứ của Yukawa, từ đó lý giải được nhiều điều về tính cách của nhà vật lí thiên tài này.
Những nhân vật nữ trong câu chuyện này, ai cũng đem theo một quá khứ thật là buồn và nhiều đau khổ. Và bằng những mối liên kết lạ kì, họ nương tựa vào nhau, che chở và bảo vệ cho nhau, dù có phải hi sinh tất cả những gì mình có.

Not as good as other Higashino books; less mystery, more drama. However, you can just read through any Higashino books without being stuck, and that's why I like him. This one is ok for his fans, but if you're new, you should start with his other works.

Another intriguing Galileo tale.
The complex situation of a death that goes from at first glance relatively simple to murder, highly involved, and back to its simple root’s is teasingly intriguing.
All very laid back despite the accompanying twists.
A body is found with a bullet in its back. A young woman has a partner she’s reported missing. Now the woman can’t be found. Chief Inspector Kusanagi and his team explore the angle of domestic abuse.
In the mix is an older woman who’s much struck by the younger woman and as time goes on she’s convinced Sonoka Shimauchi is her granddaughter.
Is this a lie or the truth?
The story’s beginnings lay in the past decades back when a young mother places her daughter on the steps of an orphanage accompanied by a very distinctive hand made doll.
It takes Professor Manabu Yukawa (Detective Galileo) to quietly make sense of it all
So much space and time throughout the story to reflect. A pleasing pace.
The translation is spot on, no awkward syntaxes to make you shake your head.

I received an ARC from the publisher as part of a Goodreads giveaway. This is the fifth English translation of Higashino's Detective Galileo series, there are 10 in total. Higashino is one of Japan's bestselling novelists. I have read a previous entry into this series, as well as one of the Kaga series. The book totally works as a standalone. The English translation of Invisible Helix is due to be published December 2024.
The series is a police procedural where the police are aided by the friend of the Chief Inspector, a professor of physics (hence Detective Galileo). Professor Yukawa loves to solve complex puzzles ( and he is quite skillful at this). Invisible Helix is a series of twisty puzzles. This book is an exploration of what is family and the importance of relations. The way the multiple twists unfold is masterful, and never feels forced. Recommended, both the series and the book.

বিখ্যাত গ্যালিলিও সিরিজের বই হলেও অনেকটাই নিষ্প্রভ। লেখক চমক রেখেছেন যদিও কিন্তু বইটার কাহিনি অনেকটাই সাদামাটা। ইনভিজিবল হেলিক্স হিসেবে যেই জিনিসটাকে লেখক উপস্থাপন করেছেন-ব্যাপারটা খুব ভাল্লাগসে। যাই হোক, অনুবাদ ভালো ছিল, আহনাফ তাহমিদের অনুবাদও আমি ফলো করি, উনিও হতাশ করেন নাই। শুধু ইয়ে একটা জিনিস... এইটা অবশ্য আমার পার্সোনাল খুঁতখুঁতেমি বললেও হবে। যেহেতু হিগাশিনোর বইয়ের অধিকাংশ অনুবাদ সালমান হকের (বর্ষণ হাসানেরও দুইটা পড়েছি) এদের ডিটেক্টিভদের নাম লিখার সময় প্যাটার্ন সেইম ছিল। যেমন, উতসুমির পুরো নাম কাউরু উতসুমি। লেখার সময় উতসুমি হিসেবেই পড়েছি আর এখানে, মানে হেলিক্স পড়তে যেয়ে মাঝে মাঝে কয়েক জায়গায় যখন শুধু কাওরু নামটা পেয়েছি তখন জাস্ট একটু অচেনা অচেনা ফিলিংস লেগেছে। এই ব্যাস!

Higashino has set so high standards for himself that anything weak leaves a bad aftertaste. This was one such weak work. The mystery part was non-existent. It was the characters who had kept the plot ticking. Nevertheless, this felt like a thoroughly diluted version of several of his better works, notably 'The Final Curtain'.
But, it was a good read nevertheless.

To be honest, I was expecting more and it didn't hit the mark.
First off, it was predictable, right from the beginning I suspected that's where it was going and I was right.
The other thing that really bothered me was the main character Sonoka Shimauchi. I did not like her at all. Far too many times her lines are to repeat dumbstruck what the other person is saying to her. I can understand once or twice but when it's a perpetual thing, it's very annoying ("the doll? the baby? the ...this? the... that?") Also, the narrator didn't do the perfect job when it came to impersonating her or any other female characters.
The plot itself, although simplistic, it got a bit complicated in the end for not good reason. It really didn't add much to the story.
Nevertheless, I am looking forward to read the next one in this series.

Every book by Keigo Higashino has been a thrilling ride that never fails to impress me! Moreover, this time, the intriguing elements are seamlessly intertwined with the plot twists throughout the story.
The story begins with the body of a young man named Ryota Uetsuji, found floating in Tokyo Bay with a gunshot wound. The mystery deepens when his live-in girlfriend, who reported him missing a week earlier, also disappears and is nowhere to be found.
When the investigation team learns that Ryota's girlfriend, Sonoka Shimauchi, was also a victim of domestic abuse, they initially assume she is the main suspect. However, their assumptions change when they discover a strong alibi for her whereabouts during the event, forcing Detectives Kusanagi and Utsumi to restart their investigation and of course seeking help and advice from our beloved character; Professor Manabu Yukawa also known as Detective Galileo.
As usual, I always admire the way Detective Galileo work, the deduction especially on the unthinkable facts and events including the process of reaching a decision or answer by thinking about the known facts, information gathering, tracking the timeline, and confronting with person of interest.
In my personal opinion, this time, from start to finish, it's a steady read. While less intense, it still manages to keep you on edge.
Definitely a 5-star read for me.

It has been a while since I read the first two books in this series and so I jumped into this one without reading the ones in between. I did recently read Newcomer featuring Detective Kaga, which I really enjoyed for its unique approach to crime solving.
Japanese crime fiction is always delightfully different in the way it is so cleverly plotted and keeps the reader interested in the how, why and what of a crime and not just the who.
This one, featuring Detectives Kusanagi,Kishitani and Utsumi of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police is much the same though it is even lighter in the suspense aspect than usual.
Starting off with a prologue of a helpless young mother abandoning her baby outside an orphanage, it then moves directly to the detectives who have been assigned a case involving a body that was washed ashore from the sea and bears a bullet hole in the neck. Identified as Ryoto Uetsuji,a young man who was reported missing by his girlfriend Sonoka, it feels like an open and shut case when details of domestic abuse perpetuated by the dead man come to the fore. However, Sonoka has an alibi even if she is currently missing and the detectives are stumped. Until their good friend Professor Yukawa or Detective Galileo as they call him, enters the scene along with two older women, one of whom is an author of picture books and the other the owner of a popular hostess bar. How all of this connects to the murder is the question that needs to be answered.
We know or can guess pretty early on who the murderer is but the connections between everyone involved are slowly unraveled. To be honest, this mystery did have too many coincidences and convenient solutions and the detection part seemed to be very light because things just fell into place. It was the kind of story where the reader cannot participate and that was disappointing. The characters hold secrets that we cannot possibly know so we cannot figure out what happened. Since there is no major twist, this takes out the fun somewhat.
I still thought this was a decent read given my love for this author and this genre but usually his books have more pep and these recurring characters are sharper than they were here.
I'll definitely read the two other books in this series and hope they are better.

It was the kind of story where the reader cannot participate and that was disappointing. The characters hold secrets that we cannot possibly know so we cannot figure out what happened. Since there is no major twist, this takes out the fun somewhat.
I still thought this was a decent read given my love for this author and this genre but usually his books have more pep and these recurring characters are sharper than they were here.
I'll definitely read the two other books in this series and hope they are better.

先說重點，如果對於湯川系列的角色沒有特別感情的人，這本可以略過(多的那顆星是我對於湯川系列的情懷)，因為看完最大的感想就是，東野你可以再混一點！這本連涉及科學角度辦案都沒有，動機手法乾扁扁，寫成短篇還好，寫成長篇只會覺得，你當警察和讀者是笨蛋嗎？
因為案情過於慘不忍睹，先放一邊，雖然東野致力於讓這位科學家變得有溫度，所以本書在案件外，又加入了很多湯川的身世之謎，但個人看了覺得像一坨未攪散的鹽巴，過於突兀又跟主線不搭，那個在白夜行和嫌疑犯X的獻身，將感情描寫的令人深刻的東野已經才華不再了。
總言之，現在東野的書大概只剩下浮誇的文案和封面(完全難以理解台灣出那麼多款封面是在幹嘛)，原本不想支持台版譯者跑去中亞買，還順便省了錢，實在太好了。

This book got me emotionally, gut punched me with the backstory and here I was crying after finish reading it. I expected to be attached emotionally to the story but what I didnt expect is for myself to shed a tear while reading it. Keigo Higashino pulled off yet another brilliant story with deep resonant emotional attachment with his characters. Invisible Helix on premise sounds like every typical Higashino's story, there is a murder, with Detectivd Kusanagi and Detective Kaoru Utsumi investigating the suspicious death of a man found floating in the ocean linked to the missing live in girlfriend and Professor Manabu Yukawa's help to solve the case. Opening the story with a past on a couple that dreamed to build a life together but cut short when the man died leaving his pregnant girlfriend which eventually caused the woman to abandon her child in an oprhanage due to financial difficulties. With the opening like this, you as a reader are bound to have your suspicions and clues as the story progressed and thats what i like about the story. Its not about finding who was the killer but mostly the questions of whys and the motive.
In every Gallileo's series, we get glimpses and more in depth character arc in Manabu Yukawa and this time we see of his relationship with his ageing father and his ailing, dementia mother. This soft and vulnerable portrayal of Yukawa touched my heart deeply seeing his guilt of not taking care of his parents more while also sympathising his resentment of it. The story also highlighted a lot on the issue of parenthood, the abuse in relationship and the twisted pasts merged together in the current days that led to one of the most devastating conclusion in my opinion. The vulnerability I felt reading all of these characters especially Yukawa gutted me so deeply that I was mourning for the loss and the heartbreak of it. The story went back and forth in telling you whats happened in a simple but clever way, directed you to believe in another but then diverted the expectations which is clever to me. Its not all on the surface level but more on the depth of the backstory that made this book so enjoyable to read. As much as I love the story, I do have qualms on the translation as I felt some of the sentences awkward and stilted but thankfully does not deter my reading.
Overall, this was a great addition to Detective Galileo series as I feel like I get to know Yukawa more and see him in a much different light.

I’m sure I wouldn’t keep reading his books if they were set outside of Tokyo. But they are set in Tokyo and apparently that’s enough for me.

A homicide and familial driven premise told in multiple perspectives following Chief Inspector Kusanagi and his squad in investigating a murder case of a corpse that was found floating in Tokyo Bay with a bullet wound on his back. A mysterious case at first when the victim’s live-in girlfriend; Sonoka Shimauchi was nowhere to be found after filing a missing person report on her boyfriend and went too twisty later when one of the person related to Sonoka was revealed to have a direct connection to Kusanagi’s close friend; Professor Manabu Yukawa.
From years ago prologue of an unnamed woman to Chizuko and both Ryota and Sonoka’s narratives— a taut whodunnit mystery that brought me to delve into one’s vulnerability and familial bond, of guilt, regret and desperation that tied a years ago tragedy to one’s devious and ingenious motive. Bit curious on how Yukawa would go helping out Kusanagi (though he emphasized that he would not) with his usual I-work-alone mode, loved the interaction of him and Utsumi as well how emotionally the case go unfolding his past— that glimpses of Yukawa’s childhood and familial history which giving me more insight and dynamic to our Galileo’s character.
Bit tense for its domestic abuse and morality concern— could foreseen on how Sonoka and Hidemi’s narratives would interlaced, having my own guesses yet that revelation from Sonoka later stunned me. It was much personal with a vivid story of one’s grief and remorse rather than a thrilling crime mystery and I was more interested with both Hidemi and Nae’s backstories (frankly I did not care much about Ryota’s death anymore) that it wretched me on how the mystery resolved through those confessions and revelations at the end.
