About the author

Sujatha was the allonym of the Tamil author S. Rangarajan, Author of over 100 novels, 250 short stories, ten books on science, ten stage plays, and a slim volume of poems. He was one of the most popular authors in Tamil literature, and a regular contributor to topical columns in Tamil periodicals such as Ananda Vikatan, Kumudam and Kalki. He had a wide readership, and served for a brief period as the editor of Kumudam, and has also written screenplays and dialogues for several Tamil movies.

As an engineer, he supervised the design and production of the electronic voting machine (EVM) during his tenure at Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a machine which is currently used in elections throughout India. As an author he inspired many authors, including Balakumaran, Madhan.

"24 ரூபாய் தீவு" - சுஜாதா

1993 வாக்கில் குமுதம் வார இதழில் வெளிவந்த த்ரில்லர் நாவல்.
சுஜாதாவின் மற்ற நாவல்களோடு ஒப்பிடும்போது, சற்றே 'காரம்' குறைவானதாகவே தோன்றுகிறது. அதாவது அவரது துள்ளலான நடை தளர்ந்தது போல உள்ளது. இருப்பினும் அசராமல் நமது வாசிப்பை ஈர்க்கிறது, காரணம், குடும்பம், பாசம், தோல்வி, வேதனை போன்ற மனித இயல்புகளை யதார்த்தங்களை கொண்டுள்ளதால்.

தினசரி பத்திரிகை ஒன்றின் நிருபரான விஸ்வநாத்., லதாங்கி எனும் பெண்ணின் மரணத்தை கண்டு, அவளது டைரியை எடுத்தது முதல், அந்த டைரியினால் என்னவெல்லாம் அவனுக்கு நிகழ்ந்தது என்பதை விறுவிறுப்புடன் சொல்கிறது இந்நாவல். அந்த டைரியின் தலைப்பு - 24 ரூபாய் தீவு. சித்தரிக்கப்பட்ட தீவாக கூறப்படுகிறது.

This is one of those books where an ordinary non heroic person faces some extraordinary circumstances and gets caught in a web of deceit and lies. He comes out of them but not unscathed. As always Sujatha treats his characters with empathy and wit. Ganesh and Vasanth make a tiny appearance. The end is realistic. Loved the book.

மொத்தம் 128 பக்கங்கள் கொண்ட இந்த நாவல் ஒரு பொலிடிகல் திரில்லர் வகை நாவல் என்று சொல்லலாம். கதை தொடங்குவது தின ஒளி என்று பத்திரிகை அலுவகத்தில் தான் அங்கு வேலை செய்யும் விசுவநாத் என்ற நிருபருக்கு லதாங்கி என்ற பெண்ணிடம் இருந்து தொலைபேசி அழைப்பு வருகிறது. முதலில் அதை மறுக்கும் விசுவநாத் பிறகு அந்த பெண் சொல்லி இருக்கும் முகவரிக்கு செல்கிறார் அப்போது அங்கு சென்று பார்க்கும் போது தான் தெரிகிறது அந்த பெண் இறந்துவிட்டாள் என்பதும் அவள் அருகில் ஒரு கைப்பையும் அதில் ஒரு டைரியும் இருக்கிறது. அதை விசுவநாத் எடுத்து வந்து விட

அந்த டைரியை உரிமை கொண்டாடி ஒவ்வொருவரும் நிருபரைத் தேடி வருகின்றனர் அதன் பிறகு விசுவநாத்துக்கும் அவனது குடும்பத்திற்கு பிரச்சனை ஆரம்பிக்கிறது. இதில் இருந்து மீண்டு வந்தாரா அந்த டைரியில் இருக்கும் ரகசியம் என்ன என்பது தான் பரபரப்பான மீதி கதை.

வழக்கமான சுஜாதாவின் கதைகளில் இருந்து இது சற்று வித்தியாசமாக இருக்க இரண்டு காரணம்.

1) கணேஷ் வசந்த உள்ள நாவல் இது என்றாலும் அவர்கள் வருவது கடைசி ஓரிரு அத்தியாயங்களில் மட்டும் தான்

2) அது மட்டும் இல்லாமல் விசுவநாத் மற்றும் அவரது குடும்பம் , அவர்களை சுற்றி நகர்வதால் சற்று வித்யாசமாக இருக்கிறது

எனினும் வாசிக்க வேண்டிய விறுவிறுப்பான நாவல் இது.

A gripping thriller with many mysteries. Convincing narration by the author. The characterization. The plot everything was wonderful. The way the protagonist reacts and his situation was well portrayed. The author clearly depicts a typical Tamil middle class family during 70-80s. The problems that reporters still face due to the neutral reporting. The game of politics, money and business involved in the newspaper medium. The way the newspapers report and the way they play the game, a day in police station and the situation of lockups in the police station, treatment given to the accused by the cops, the labour union and the other face of labour union and it's leader, were depicted in such a way that we're taken aback to the time period where the story happens. Finally a worthy read.

அரசியல்வாதியின் கவிதை காதல் டைரி. ஒரு மர்ம கொலை. சம்பந்தமே இல்லாத பத்திரிக்கையாளன் கையில் கவிதை டைரி கிடைக்கிறது. அதை பயன்படுத்தி தனது பத்திரிக்கையில் எழுத தொடங்குகிறான். அரசில் அரசியல் செய்ய பயன்படுகிறது.

ஒரு கட்டம் வரை நன்றாக இருக்கும் புத்தகம் அதன் பிறகு இதுதான் நடக்க போகிறது என்பதை சுலபமாக யூகிக்க முடிகிறது. வாத்தியார் கைவண்ணத்தில் சுமார் நாவல்.

Being a new book reader(this is my 3rd book) never thought reading will be this much exciting... Literally I am able to visualise the characters and it's because of the modern tamil(mostly) also the writer's elegance of the story. Don't wanna be a spoiler so please read n u will not regret the money spent on buying or renting this book.

Sujatha !! im glad that i chose you for a wonderful Saturday. it's not the best one.. but it always feels good to read sujatha's novels..

a crime thriller. the twists could have been better.. the way of characterisation is awestruck..

You could easily imagine a 80's Kamal acting in such a story. One where an ordinary man gets into a place he doesn't belong to and get into the middle of big chaos that changes his life. Some peak cinematic moments and a brilliant ending will make you read this book at one stretch.

I am a huge admirer of Sujatha’s writing, but this book is an extremely average crime thriller. It lacks depth in the story, has a weak plot, and offers no proper characterization.

I recall that this thriller by Sujatha appeared in the weekly mag called "Kumudam" in the early 1990's. I am really happy that Visa Publications is keeping the titles of Sujatha alive.

24 Rupai Theevu (24 Rupees Island) is a real page turner (if one can read Tamil fast enough). The story begins with Gopinath a fiery, ambitious politician and a Minister in TN trying to unseat the reigning Chief Minister and get to that position. A young girl called Lathangi talks to Viswanth, a reporter in a Tamil daily and tells him that she wants to meet him and provide him with a story that he may be interested in. When Viswanath reaches her residence, he finds her dead, seated on a chair with bruise marks indicating that she is strangled. The police, however, after a perfunctory investigation close this as a suicide.

Viswanath manages to read a few pages from a diary that contains a few verses in Tamil and refers to a 24 Rupees Island. Viswanath unwittingly leaves the diary in the taxi he takes. Then the world turns upside down for him as several parties seek to get hold of the diary. Some entreat him (the victim's sister), some offer him huge sums of money, and some violently threaten him.

Sujatha's narrative is at his best as the story hurtles towards a brilliantly crafted climax. Sujatha's two best known characters - Ganesh the Lawyer-Investigator and Vasanth his sidekick - make a cameo appearance to liven up the end.

ஓர் அப்பாவி நிருபனின் வாழ்க்கையில் யதேச்சையாக இடறுகிறது ஓர் அழகுப்பெண்ணின் சடலமும், ஷோக்குக் கவிதைகள்

கணேஷ்- வசந்த் கூட்டணி இருந்தாலும் சுஜாதா எழுதியதில் சற்று சுமாரான புத்தகம். கவி காதல் செய்யும் அரசியல்வாதியும், ஏதோ ஒரு சுழலில் சிக்கி மாட்டிகொண்ட நிருபனும் என்று எதிர்பாக்காத வகையில் கதை பயணித்தாலும் முடிவுகள் யுகிக்கும்படி அமைந்தது தோய்வாக உள்ளது !

Brilliant, Brilliantly written.
Finished in 2 Hours.
Sujatha's most fast paced express novel I have read yet.
No big twist ending, though which is a huge surprise, given Sujatha standards.
But it doesn't take anything away with the way the story is woven.

Viswqnathan 25 yr old ordinary guy who was a reporter in a news paper company struggles to live with daily domestic problems and in workplace. He then get into a trap by poligical power bcuz of diary wriiten by a girl who was murdered. Then how he managed to come out of those oroblems this was the story. Very nicely wriiten again by sujatha. He never failed to impress the readers. 😎
