THE BONES: The Reckoning and the Coffin — A Novel of Joseph, Book 3

Rate this book
Ten men are on their faces on the floor of an Egyptian grain hall. The man they are bowing to is the brother they sold.He knows them. They do not know him.

And he has three days to decide what he is going to do about it.

THE RECKONINGHe does not forgive them.

Not that day, and not for a year.

He accuses them of espionage. He puts them in a cell for three days — the same number of days he once gave two men who were waiting to learn whether they would live. He binds Simeon in front of them and keeps him for a year.

He puts his own silver back in their sacks and lets them find it on the road.

And then he does the cruelest thing in the he seats them at his own table in the exact order of their birth, gives the youngest son of Rachel five times more than any of them — and plants a silver cup in the boy's bag.

He rebuilds Dothan, precisely, and hands them the same choice they made twenty-two years ago.

The favored son of Rachel. Singled out. Alone. In their hands.

And the road home is open.

THEN JUDAH CAME NEARThe man who sold him for twenty pieces of silver crosses the floor.

He does not dispute the cup. He does not claim they are innocent.

He talks about his father.

"Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren."

Take me. Let him go.

He is not asking to be forgiven. He does not know who he is talking to. He believes he is offering his own body, for the rest of his life, to a foreign official who will hold him to it.

He cannot do it twice.

AND JOSEPH BROKE"Cause every man to go out from me."

The Egyptians outside heard it through the wall. The house of Pharaoh heard it. Nobody knew why.

"I am Joseph; doth my father yet live?"

WHAT COMES AFTER IS THE PART NOBODY TELLS YOUAn old man refuses to believe it — because these same sons lied to him about this same son once before, and he cannot tell the difference. Until he sees the wagons.Joseph buys Egypt. Money, then cattle, then land, then bodies. The man who was sold into slavery makes a nation into servants — and the Bible reports it without one word of judgment.Seventeen years — the exact number that was taken from them. The crossed hands. Joseph seizes his blind father's wrist to stop him breaking the birth order — and Jacob says, "I know it, my son, I know it."And ten men, on the day of their father's funeral, forge a dead man's words — because after seventeen years of forgiveness they still do not believe it.A COVENANT WITH THE READEREvery event in this book happens in the Bible. Every outcome stands. Every recorded word is exactly as the King James Version gives it.

Nobody is made better than Scripture makes them — including Joseph. The espionage lie stands. The three days stand. The cup in a child's sack stands.

"Ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good."

Both halves are true. Neither cancels the other. This book refuses to take either one back.

Read it with the Bible open.
