Broken homes are not uncommon. Divorce happens. People survive and move on. Drug addiction adds a different wrinkle to a family in crisis. With no conscience how far might a desperate man go to feed his need. Could his pretty twelve year-old daughter become an asset? Reports of a dangerous predator hunting in a suburban neighborhood pale by comparison. Julia Woodson has survived her disintegrating marriage and made all the right moves to avoid domestic violence and shelter her two children. Yet even the best plans could prove ineffective for a woman defending her home against a driven madman she once loved. Three lives are at stake; her life, her seven year-old son’s life, and daddy’s twelve year-old valuable commodity.
I was a short way into this book before I began to empathise with Julia. Her husband, and the father of her children, Mark and Jenny, had my sympathy when Julia organised a party they could ill-afford for his fortieth birthday. All his gifts were designed to make him laugh about entering a new decade, but does anybody like to be told they have wrinkles and grey hairs?
Sympathy didn’t last, or not for Todd when he beat Julia into a hospital case. Todd, drug-addict, was about the become Julia’s ex-husband, and a good thing too! Custody and visitation rights loomed, while both children, especially Mark, still saw Todd as the “good guy”; Julia had played fair.
More and more comes to light, and the action never stops. Most of the story is Julia’s, but Jenny’s will break your heart. I thought I knew very early why the book has the title Screamer, but I was wrong. I was in the dark about every twist and turn to the end.
This is the first book I've read by this author, and I can't wait to read more of her books. Screamer was a page turner from beginning to end. The story was well written, and the characters were well developed. The story is heavy on domestic violence, so for anyone who is a survivor of domestic violence, I would not recommend this book.
This was a great story and a great book. Well written and entertaining from beginning to end. Julia became the friend we all have in our lives, going through a tough time and you want to help her. Jim was my hero from the very first time we meet him in the story and I hated Todd as son as I met him for the first time in the story. This story had so many real life facets to it that it will draw you in and have to as intrigued as if you were one of the characters yourself. Awesome work R. E. Wood. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be entertained. It's well worth the read.
