3 stars in this case means that: - Average fantasy reader will probably not find anything drastically new in this story. - I liked quest/journey parts where two main characters were away from each other more than when they were in close proximity. I still heavily dislike the instant attraction of the two towards one another (since the first book), it makes them uninteresting as a couple in my view. - Emotional component was not there for me. I didn’t feel for the characters, whether side or main, and was mostly observing what will happen. Maybe it has to do with saturation by fantasy / romantasy (even though i did read a few non-fantasy things before reading this story), or it was not the right time/mood/state of mind for reading it. - The plot is formulaic to an extent, but descriptions are quite beautiful. Sometimes I continued listening because of the language and good narrators. - I also liked that romantic component was mostly secondary. The journey, search and discovery of the characters’ past and destiny was more dominant in my opinion. I’d say the ratio of plot lines was 40%:60%. - I have a personal preference for books which have completed individual storylines. Even if the book is published as part of the series I don’t want to have an impression that this was one 900 pages long story, which was just split into more parts. I like it when each instalment can stand on its own, no obvious cliffhangers, etc. - I can only imagine how much effort goes into publishing independently (from what I understand, this is an independently published story). So, congratulations to the author on publishing the second instalment, that seems to also be widely liked on Audible and here. - Separately I’d like to compliment the narrators, the voices and the manner of narration were very good.
4.2/5 English language version. Free audible, Duel but short chapters more similar to duet. - yes - narrated well by Imogen Wilde and Joe Jamieson. The only thing wrong here is book 3 isn't published yet. I hate unfinished series, wouldn't have started if I had known. Izzy realises she is a fire fae and escapes the evil queen Kalia with her diplomat friend Villa. Caleb eventually gets a grip on himself a few days later when he almost watches Lyra get executed. He picks up Lyra and Thane and goes after Izzy in turmoil. They all end up at the water kingdom that reveres harmony, but who's friendly Queen is not to be trusted. Well written and enjoyable.
The book was ok, typcial characters (though they seemed old for the standard tropes being followed), lots of drawn out parts the could have been skipped so as not to leave it as a cliff hanger.
Overall, this book is kinda like a satellite friend, you have a good time when you are together, but you sort of forget about them when they aren't right there. I listened to book 1 and 2 assuming it was the end of the series. Nope. And I dont think I'll even remember this series by the time next book is out. Characters just weren't overly enthralling.
What a bore! The only chapter worth listening to is 41. FMC is most irritating , MMC is turning into a whimper. I always finish stories because I like to know the end but I am not sure I will spare time for book 3.
Really enjoyed this sequel. Izzy and Caleb ho through additional hardships and learn more about themselves in the process , uncomfortable as it may be. Their relationship grows throughout. Lots of great scenes and facets of teamwork and family. Can’t wait for the next one
