Sometimes Flying Solo Means You Just Have to Wing It

sin•gle•ti• A curious type of female typically found living in urban settings; possessing an unusual, some would say deathly, fear of growing up and getting married.

Meet Victoria Hart. She’s sassy, sparkling, and taking the Chicago dating scene by storm as a professional “wingwoman”—a modern-day matchmaker hired to help clueless guys find Miss Right. With nights on the town, drinks on the house, and clothes on the credit card, Vic is loving her glam singletini lifestyle. There’s just one little problem . . . okay, maybe two. She needs to keep her new career a secret, and the first of her friends just got engaged—ENGAGED!

Vic isn’t sure she’s ready to be that grown up yet—she likes her life the way it is. Not that being a wingwoman is all wine and roses. With clients ranging from cowboys and would-be porn stars to her best friend’s boss, Vic quickly discovers this late-night Cupid gig is trickier than she anticipated. To make matters worse, she somehow agrees to help plan her friend’s swanky wedding, complicated by a never-ending to-do list and a very shady groom.

With too many wingwoman gigs, bridezilla demands, and more and more friends eyeing the altar, Vic is starting to feel a little lost, a lot confused, and completely bombarded by love connections. Does she really want to stay solo . . . or use those wingwoman skills for herself?

No. Just No.

Words can't explain how annoyed and horrible I felt when I read this book.

First off, we have the narrator of the book: Victoria Hart. And she is one of the most annoying characters I have ever read in my entire life. She thinks only about herself most of the time, and her reactions to some situations just make me wanna go, "WHAT THE FUCK?" For example: Vic is about to go to a very important interview her friend got for her. She steps out of the building, all confident and suddenly, BOOM, Vic is all, "OMIGOSH WHAT IF I DIDN'T BRING MY RESUME, WHT IF I SCREW UP.. blah blah blah..." and one or two paragraphs later, "I'm going to rock this! I'm sooooo going to get the job!"

There is also the fact that Victoria doesn't stand up for herself. When her best friend Gywn yells at her to get things done because she's the bride and everybody needs to listen to the bride (Basically Gywn just scares the fuck out of her), Vic just stands there and goes like, "Yeah. I'll do it. I'll get the flowers. The dress. Blah blah blah...."

It's like she doesn't have a SPINE!

You see what I mean? Victoria irritates me.

The characters in this book are stereotypical and weird. So obviously we have a hairstylist named Marco who's also gay. Wow. Gosh, what a brilliant idea! You just copied this from basically any chick-flick book that's on the market right now. And don't get me started on Victoria's best friend Gywn is obnoxious, shallow, and a freaking bitch. She goes all bridezilla on Victoria and all her friends, she doesn't even realize she's being mean to them. She's especially hard on Vic, who keeps yelling orders at her to go stalk her supposedly-cheating fiance and Victoria, being the spineless person she is, just does it. Without a complaint. Nada.

The romance is ridiculous, and the writing is repetitive. I don't know how many times the author writes the sentence, "I love Gywn but..." It annoys the hell out of me. The romance development was not enough, and I don't see why Patrick and Victoria should even be together at all. There was almost no conversation between them, and even if there was, the author just writes a paragraph stating "we laughed and we talk, and tell jokes..." and a paragraph later, BOOM. Patrick kisses Victoria.

Well. That escalated quickly.

The only thing I liked about this book is that I like the idea of 'wingwoman'. It's a different concept of work and if this job was real, I would totally go for it.

Well, that's all for today. Love, Claudia.

I'm kind of excited, the opening promises some situation humor, kinda the slapstick thing I'm into for some laughs, and the writing seems to be on point...
I got excited a little too early. The authors "talk" is babyish and a little off putting. I mean she can't just curse like a normal person, she says "shitty"...like upon her character first waking up..."oh, shitty, what have I done" or just taking a walk and realizing some forgotten thing, "shitty"...whats with the inability to curse like a normal adult. Its like by adding ty at grammatically incorrect moments (not that there are any hard fast rules to grammatically swearing, its just a given, duh.)she's trying too hard to reach out, or something. I don't know, I only know its annoying. Still there are aspects about the book that I'm enjoying, so all is not lost.
All was lost. I can't get past the babytalking swear word thing the author has going on...and the writing just seemed forced. I'm very bitter, because, as you can see, I was excited about the book in the beginning and it truly sucked.

The ending was predictable, (but what book like this isn't?). It was cute enough. I enjoyed the three wedding coordinator characters quite a bit. They added a different spin and made it more fun to read.

I don’t often come across truly bad books, but this one really was pretty bad. I probably should have given up after 20 pages, but this was so bad it kind of amused me. I kind of wanted to know where it was heading. It was not romantic, not sexy, not anything, apart from cringeworthy.

I know that is a very negative way to start my thoughts on this novel, but to be honest I do not have that many good things to say about his one. And although I am all for ‘if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all’ I did finish this book and I ought to review it.

The main character Victoria is so dim, you want to shake her sometimes… well… all the time. There is literally not an intelligent character in this book. Everyone is incredibly superficial.

The writing is not great either. Every time the MC said ‘shitty’ I amost laughed aloud in amusement. Apparently she could tell just by looking at a dress or suit that the person was wearing Chanel or Prada or any random designer. Really? Every now and then she would turn to the reader to say something, which was completely unnecessary. The plot was incredibly predictable.

And yet, despite all of that, I did not completely hate it. It was bad, yes, but it was not as bad as I expected it to be after the first 20 pages. The plot itself was fine and it could have been a good book if it had been handled a bit (ok, very) differently.

Will I keep this book? No. Will I recommend this book? No. But I can’t quite bring myself to throw it in the trash either. Maybe someone who is less picky might be ok with it.

Chicago has revolutionized the dating service with their new Approach of Wingwomans, and now men are able to even manage to get the girl of their dreams with the help of these wingwomans!
Victoria, decided to take up the job because not only did she enjoy matchmaking, there are many perks that come along with it, and lets just say victoria can manage to splurge a little, however, there is a policy of no dating your clients and thats particularly hard to resist when Patrick, an orlando bloom look a like, is one of you very first clients!
Victoria finds herself in a mess and unable to juggle her life! her timing skills are well, zilch! and she has to help her friends wedding and juggle her job while trying to stop thinking of anything to do with patrick! will she be able to survive or will her bad juggling skills take the best of her!
For my first Amanda Trimble book, I must say, HOW COME I HAVE NEVER HEARED OF HER! her writing style is just purely fun and funny, her writing style if very similar to Meg Cabot and I found her book absolutely a blast!
If your a big Meg Cabot fan, im pretty sure youll love Amanda Trimble

Really enjoyed this book, but I would say, it doesn't exactly age well. With the forced look on being perfect, on being a certain size and a certain weight and dressing only in designer gear....Yeah, this book was definitely written in the early noughties and it kind of shows.
Still enjoyed it, still laughed and face palmed at certain parts; an indulge yourself kind of book.

Just another chick lit book. Had some cute moments but found the characters annoying especially the flaky, constantly late and irresponsible lead.

It got worse near the end. What constitutes a friend in this book is questionable. Plot is farfetched.

What a fun read! I love being in Victoria's head and her thoughts. Her insecurites are ones many singltini's have. And I loved the setting of Chicago, feeling like I was there. A great, fun read!

Singletini by Amanda Trimble

Do you believe in zodiac signs? Loves to read magazine? Likes shopping? Make over? Preparing for a wedding? If you want something quirky to read, you might want to check Singletini. This really feels like one of the rom-com film, cliche yet still interesting.

You'll find Victoria Hart a hopeless case because of how things turned out for her. but eventually you'll just hate her friend Gwynn who's just got engaged, that Victoria doesn't want to accept. Singletini features the story of newly fired woman who desperately want a job and decided to take the wingwoman job because it's easier to earn 100$ in an hour. Anyway, it's funny how her first night with her first client, who's also her crush, turned out to be ridiculous and exhausting, matchmaking is really a fun job but really a piece of work if you don't have the personality of befriending people. But if you have the aura of being a cupid, now, that's a potential.

Victoria's a bit annoying and immature but that's the point of the story, sometimes we can't just accept the fact that people we used to play with have to marry, get kids, and live far from what they used to be. Adulting is sad and exciting. You just have to deal with it, time isn't going back, so you have to keep moving.

This Book is quite entertaing. It is about a single woman who just got fired from her desk job and is now a wingwoman [a matchmaker] but keeps it a secret from her friends. And on top of having many gigs many nights, she has to deal with being the Personal Attendant to her friend, Gwynn, the bride-to-be.

Favorite part:
"I stagger over to the brunette, much more focused this time. Much more prepared. Well, as prepared as I can be after four or five appletinis. Um...or six?
I can do this. I can...
"So," I say, casually sliding my elbow onto the bar next to her. "Do you hang out here a lot?"
The brunette's face lights up. Her lips are sticky red like candy. "Oh my God. No way! Are you hitting on me?"
I jump back a few steps, nearly toppling over. My cheeks are suddenly on fire. "What? Oh no. You don't understand."
"HOW CUTE!" the brunette hoots. "You're a lesbian."
"Oh no! I'm not..."
"Kristy! Quick, grab the camera." The brunette snamcks her short pudgy blond friend in the back. "Hurry!"
I glance over my shoulder to see Patrick shaking his head in amusement. Fabulous.
"I...I have to go," I tell the brunette.
"Wait! Don't leave!" the girl yells. "Can I take a picture of you? We just moved here from Iowa. We've never seen a lesbian before."

Jesus, what is this shit?

With the exception of Twilight, I have never read a contemporary novel written by a woman that was more insulting to women than this. It was like one of those horrible things you see and you just can't look away. Amanda Trimble's Singletini is the single most vapid work of fiction I have ever had the displeasure of reading. The main character, an alcoholic named Vic, is as shallow as a cheap plastic kiddie pool. The narration is first-person, and, I swear to God, every last one of Vic's thoughts and feelings revolved around drinking, dating, fashion, shopping, clubbing, and rich people. She was more manic than a bipolar patient amped on crystal meth. I mean, the story moves at this a crazy-fast pace that should be impossible without the protagonist eventually suffering severe burnout. Apparently Trimble comes from an advertising background, so I guess that makes sense, but writing a novel is not the same as writing catchy copy. Look, I know there is thoughtful chick lit out there, but this isn't it. I simply cannot believe this was written by a grown woman for grown women. Actually, I think Twilight was better-written and far more mature.

I do enjoy the Chick-Lit genre from time to time, especially in the summer when it's so hot that I feel like my eyes are evaporating. But this one was not a good choice.

The protagonist, Victoria Hart (who's also the narrator) is a 20-something woman living in the city, scared of growing up and getting married while her friends seem to do just that. I must admit that the whole wing woman thing was promising, but it didn't live up to its potential. Victoria sounds and acts way too immature, and reading the story from her mouth feels like the little sister chattering over your shoulder while you're on the phone-- too many eeks and acks, and way too much baby talk for my taste. If you're in your 20s and you're gonna curse, curse like sailor, woman!

All in all, I did not enjoy this at all, but a lot of people seem to have given it 5 stars, so maybe I'm missing something.

This book was very entertaining and a quick read. I wouldn't exactly call it original, often times it reminded me of Shopaholic- the main character is kind of flighty, shops inappropriately and racks up a ridiculous credit card bill. It works out happily ever after for EVERYONE and I find that a little bit hard to believe. And I do have two problems with this book 1. she mentions singletini entirely too often, we get the point, its overkill. 2. What grown adult goes around saying "shitty" all the time? Instead of shit, she exclaims "shitty!" and I found this to be incredibly annoying. Overall though it was an easy read and very entertaining, would make for a great beach read. You could definitely read it in a day.

This book had many similarities to the Confessions of a Shopaholic book - bad shopping tendencies, procrastination, not focusing on self, etc. However, I did enjoy this book a bit more because the little lies the character makes in this book are less harmful than those in Confessions. It's still a happy-go-lucky book about a trendy girl in a big city. I would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a fun, easy read and wants to escape into the life of a "city girl" for a while. Plus the recipe for a Singletini sounds devine and I just might have to make them soon!

I loved this book. Probably because at the time I was single and it just seemed so perfict. Yeah ok its a typical Girl trying to find her way to a perfict job, guy, life type deal but I dont know. Something about it makes me laugh.

Perhaps it was the broccoli diet she goes on and gives her gas that made me laugh. I think thats what made me love it, the whole crash diet/ it giving her gas.

I like things that make me laugh. this book def did that for me

This was a funny 20 something book. It was an easy read and I finished it in 1 day. One of those what next for these girls book. Some could be guessed of what was going to happen but was still funny anyway. I'd recommend for those times when you just want a fun, no thought challenge kind of book.

While I found this book to be entertaining, I spent most of the book feeling like Vic just needed to grow up! I do have to say that, if I was able to rate different parts of the book separately, I would give the ending 4 stars...those of you who know me would know why the second you read it=)

A predictible plot and cliched characters made this book a less than exciting addition to the chick lit genre.

A quick and easy read. I skimmed the last 50 pages; I just didn't care enough about the characters.

I'm happy I borrowed it from the library instead of buying it.

Sex in the city-esque, but Chicago style. The author was raised in Illinois so a lot of Chicago stuff. There is a major bride-zilla in this one. It was quick and cute. I wonder if this wing woman stuff is for real, it wouldn't be a bad gig. Something for the summer?

I think it would so fun to be a wing woman. You get paid to help guys find dates and pretty much play match maker. I love the title Singletini i copied the recipe in the back just to know how to make a good singletini. Just a good hearted comedic book about what can happen in real life.
