Cosmic Dryad #1

Botanical Mischief

Rate this book
Self-confessed hermit. Plant lover. And enthusiastic introvert, Pityrodia Augustensis, Gus, for short, knows three things. People, no matter their species—human, Haldeel, or Tuann—are confusing. She has forty three siblings and every single one is as baffling as they are violent. And lastly, the dead man lying on her doorstep is going to upend her hard earned peace and quiet.

When that dead man turns out to be very much alive and not dead at all, Gus finds herself drawn into a scheme with galactic implications. Pursued from one end of the space station, Titan, to the next, Gus is forced to abandon the comfort of her sanctuary in hopes of uncovering the mastermind of a plot that threatens her peaceful existence. The consequences should she fail are being named the scape goat for someone else’s crimes—and, well, death.

No pressure then. Just another day on Titan. Haven to pirate clans and criminal enterprises alike.

This novel is set in the same universe as the Firebird Chronicles. For maximum enjoyment, you may want to read that first.

Man, I just loved this. I started reading it when the author first began releasing it as single chapters on her site, and was enthralled. I'm so glad she tabled that and just gave us a glorious book all at once.

Gus is a great character, and so different from Kira, which I also appreciated. A member of the 43, but in a weird outsider way, Gus is so painfully lonely that it hurt my heart at several points in this book. I'm thrilled T.A. White said Gus will get a trilogy, because I want to see her find her happiness, and I think Caius will be just perfect for her - she has been alone and disregarded for so long that she deserves a fierce protector who thinks she's worth everything. She also needs someone who won't allow the 43 to take advantage of her anymore.

While I was happy to get more insight into the 43, nothing has changed the fact that from the moment we met them in Kira's series all the way through here, I don't like them. I think the way they treat Kira and Jin is a disgusting combination of condescension and cowardice, even if I understand the root of it is probably the 43's guilt for leaving Kira and Jin behind (we got a little Selene POV in a Kira book, and that is what cemented that impression for me - Selene talked about them (including herself) as cowards who love Kira and Jin, and are proud of them, though they take pains to never let Kira and Jin know...which I just do not understand, because they're hurting Kira and Jin with that distance).

Well, the way they treat Gus is arguably worse. She's largely treated as a non-entity by most of them, and a slave by Ryan. I know Gus also considers herself a coward, which is why she does these missions Ryan sends her on, but I wish she'd tell him to go fuck himself. He's not emperor of the 43 and she doesn't owe him anything. It sounds, from her narrative, like she took a lot of abuse in the camps just to become the master's favorite so she could find ways to help them from the inside. If anyone owes anyone else, THEY owe HER. And Ryan knows it - he admits it.

I was glad to get a couple scenes with him, though, because he's been this enigmatic leader who has seemingly made cruel decisions (with their treatment of Kira and Jin), and we haven't seen enough of him to gauge whether he's some narcissistic monster or if he's honestly trying to take care of everyone. While I still don't have a firm impression, I'm now leaning towards "narcissistic douche who is, regardless, trying to take care of everyone". He keeps the narcissistic douche label because of the way he approached Gus. Nah, man, you don't get to act surprised that she felt threatened by you when you grabbed her throat. Frankly, part of me wishes she hadn't given him the antidote, though it was for the best that she did. But like, his plan for the House... Pallas said 31 were onboard, but Gus doesn't know anything about it. Did they not include her? Is she that much of an outsider? Because, given that Ryan is happy to use her as his tool, that is spectacularly shitty and makes me think Gus should make Titan toxic to Tuann. How dare they co-opt her home like that?? I'd say "thanks for the lennacht" and then have the trees push the whole lot of them right out an airlock. Assholes.

Can't wait for more from Kira's series and this one!

Really enjoyed this, however, it felt like a short prequel rather than a proper first novel. Feeling a little unsatisfied overall but very keen for the next book.

Have I mentioned lately that I LOVE T.A. White’s writing and stories? The Firebird Chronicles series is on of my all-time favorite SciFi series EVEH. This story (and series starter) is set in the same world with a fabulously enigmatic side character from that earlier series. Guss (a nickname, her actual name is a long plant name I’m too lazy to look up and try to spell) is one of the 43 children that were stolen in the first series and has developed her own little world where she isn’t bothered with or honestly cares about people (most of whom have ignored her or treated her like dirt her entire life). She has her secret home, office and plants that she adores, studies, breeds and has found and successfully nurtured the most rare species in the universe. Sounds kind of boring? Oh, no, no, no! She is also a genius at poisons and has some very deadly but subtle abilities that no one - not even the other 43 - knows about. And in this book, we get to really dig into her and begin to discover just how powerful she is! Also, for those who have read the Firebird series, this book takes place and runs succinctly with the plotline where Kira and gang are fighting through the honeycombs. Remember all those who they found had been poisoned? Yep! Gus - just from her point of view. SO interesting!

I’ll admit that it took a bit for me to like her. I even questioned whether this would be the first series I actually didn’t love of Ms. White’s. At the first Gus is so apathetic where humans of any race are concerned that she comes across as a totally unsympathetic character. But, as the story progresses, we see that deep down (and as much as it irritates her) there is a soft, loving, but very lonely heart. Just a glimpse of one, for sure, but promising enough that we really want to see how she develops. And, of course, the action and intrigue keeps one anxiously turning the pages, as always. And we haven’t even mentioned Caius yet! Awww, Caius *sigh* Now he’s a reason to continue alone!

BTW… for those who haven’t read the original series (you should, really you should) I do think you could read this one and still enjoy it. The author does a very good job of referencing the people from the first series in a way that you would understand and not be confused.

This feels less like the first book of a spin-off series and more like book 6.5 of Firebird Chronicles: a short novel that retells the events of book six from Gus's perspective.

I thought it was okay, but I went in with much higher expectations for Gus as a character. In book six of Firebird Chronicles, she seemed fascinating and full of hidden depths. Here, those promises never really materialized.

A gang leader? We get almost none of that beyond her marking secrets with gang signs so she remembers where she hid them.

A station master? A role she literally bumbled into.

Hidden depths? Mostly a collection of personality shifts that felt more inconsistent than revealing.

A poison master? Sort of, but generally in fairly unimaginative ways.

A plant whisperer? Ok, that's just a me thing, but her variant of talking to plants like they are house pets, or the tree valiantly self-sacrificing, while they exchange feelings of joy, it's just not my thing.

One final note: despite being marketed as a stand-alone series, I'm not convinced this book would make much sense without having read at least through book six of Firebird Chronicles first.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 4.5 Stars — A Welcome Return to the Firebird World

Botanical Mischief was an absolute delight. Being back in the Firebird world felt like slipping into a favorite jacket, familiar in all the right ways yet full of new surprises. T. A. White has a gift for building worlds that feel alive, and this novella is no exception. The characters, the magic, the sharp humor — it all clicked into place and reminded me why I never hesitate to pick up anything she writes.

Was it perfect? Not entirely. But it didn’t need to be. The story had me fully engaged from start to finish, eager to see how the threads would twist and where the mischief would lead. It’s the kind of read that leaves you smiling at the end and already hungry for the next chapter in this universe.

If T. A. White writes it, I will read it. And after this one, I truly can’t wait to see where she takes the Firebird world next.

Love that there’s a spinoff of Firebird Chronicles and being introduced to Gus, her botanical and plant magic was super cool but wish it stood on its own more, the constant comparisons and references to Kira got a bit grating. “Kira” was used 121 times in a 250 page book and she didn’t physically pop up until the last couple pages if that gives an idea. Interested in next book and hope it follows its own path a bit more. Also-the plot about the child trafficking was a bit hard to follow, some more detail there would be helpful.

Loved it— more more more please!
Why a 4?
Maybe the repetition of the backstory and the explanations for everything. Since I am a Kira fan, it was hard to switch into Gus’ “voice” and wade through all the backstory.
But I get it, right? As an author, connecting this (delightful) side story with such an epic storyline as Kira and Jin?

Gus is great and the glimpse into the 43 is interesting. I loved the Lord of Titan and trees angle- very unique!

Quote:
Gus rather liked the current status quo. Better to be overlooked and forgotten than noticed and toyed with. Your bones shattered and your spirit broken.

It says you can read this without having read the Firebird Chronicles but I disagree. There is waaaaay to much to this universe and the story thus far to jump in here. That said I enjoyed it. Gus was straightforward, self aware, and consistent. Also I especially loved finally getting a bit of face time with Ryan, the leader of the 43. He’s been such an ominous shadow within the story so far.

I obvi am craving the next installment in the main storyline but this was a great diversion.

*ADVANCED READER COPY*

Wow, ok that was a good read. I'm going to be honest, I was hesitant to read this one because I didn't think anything could compare to Kira and Jin, but boy was I wrong. I started reading this through the chapter snippets T.A. White would post on her blog, but around chapter 10, she stopped posting them because it was going to be printed. Despite that, I still read all 10 chapters again when I received my ARC because it's just that good.

To anyone wondering if they need to read Firebird before this, I would say yes. While it could be read on its own, I think it just has such a bigger impact when you read the Firebird Chronicles, especially so you understand the 43 (as much as anyone can).

I loved how the next member that we were given a book about, and really got to know, was the most overlooked of the 43. Because, like most, I expected Gus to be weak, but I should have known better.

“It was a little bemusing, actually. How the supposed weakest among them had managed to topple the supposed strongest.”

Kira continuously mentions how the 43 aren't who we think they are, that they're all deadly in their own way. Forced to become monsters because of their environment. This book showed us that she's not exaggerating. I love how they find a way to manipulate whatever gift was forced upon them to make them that much more deadly, no matter how unassuming it was. It just makes me that much more excited to see what the other 43 have in store for us.

On another note, I am OBSESSED with Gus and Cius; their banter is exactly what I needed.

"“What are they feeding you?” Gus muttered. Who needed muscles that big? No one. That’s who.”

Ugh, so good and I need more stat!

Is it too much to ask for a book on each of the 43? Because after reading this, I feel like I'm going to need that to happen. Either way, for a book/novella that was less than 300 pages, I feel like I came away with so much insight into the 43 and not just that, but what this world has in store for us next.

Also, an honorable mention goes to this quote that I felt was too beautifully written not to include.

“Kira had always been the inferno, consuming everything in her path. Pallas was a mountain, enduring and strong. He could take whatever was thrown at him and come out the other side, dented and bruised but in one piece. Gus was a river, flowing over and around all obstacles, wearing them away so gradually that no one ever noticed.”

TA White is a autobuy for me and I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait to see more of Gus. Gus keeps her head low and manages the affairs on the space station, Titan, which is in the outskirts of the civilized space. She is one of 43 people that escaped being an experiment as a child. When she realizes that the practice is occurring again, she must go against her self-interest and become involved with the situation. Gus is a great character who thinks of herself of as weaker than her siblings, but has compensated in many ways. When troubles comes calling she is ready to defend those that need it as well as herself.

Botanical Mischief is an independent series in TA White’s Firebird universe that can be read on a stand alone basis. That said, one you meet the universe, you will want to immerse yourself.

A spin off from my favorite series by one of my favorite authors-count me in!

Never did I think that Gus’ character had more to her than meets the eye. She’s one of the forty-three though so secrecy, power and intrigue go hand in hand with owning that title. I loved seeing another perspective of Kira’s story while simultaneously learning more about what drives these secondary characters. Discovering more of this world is an additional bonus too and I’m so happy the author decided to write additional books in this series.

I like Gus and Caius together but I’m also partial to Ryan too lol.

If you’re a fan of the Firebird Chronicle series this is a must read and I highly recommend it.

Gus. Gussieeee. Caius was right, that was absolutely some good ol’ flirting.

I can’t wait for the next book(s) in this spinoff series, Gus is so intriguing and I loooove people with plant powers in books. I hope several of the 43 gets their own books, I have a feeling they all have huge misconceptions about each other, even if several of them are just plain awful lol. I want to know more about RYAN and PALLAS especially. It’s so fun to get to know more about them, but it’s also very sad when thinking about their background. There is so much lore to mess around with in this world, and so much potential for amazing stories 😍 the author can do no wrong at this point imho 🤓

It’s been too long since I read a T A White book. Man I needed that!!! It was so good a plant loving poisoner - soon as I read the blurb I was like sign me up!!!! Yeah it was a bit short but I think it stopped it getting overwhelmingly complex and I liked that about it. I should’ve brushed up and read the Firebird chronicles again first but honestly it worked as a stand alone but I may have gotten more from it if I had.

I didn’t really appreciate some of the reviews being like oh she doesn’t care about humans - like stop judging people from your moral perspective when they’re aliens? Only thing I wished more of was more of titans quirks as a space station and perhaps a translation of some of the words though I realise it was there to create intrigue and mystery Im just impatient. (Or maybe I would’ve known them from kiras books?) idk !!!

This was such a fun everything! I love Gus and her amazingly different abilities. I’m so glad to have another main character to follow in the firebird world! I can’t wait for the next book to come out. I hope this ends up being a decent multi book series. This world is just too fun and interesting to only have a little more of it. I can’t wait to see how things with Caius go!

You need to have read the Firebrand chronicles for this book to make sense. It’s a good book and you can follow it, but I wish I had reread the Echos of Insurrection prior to this book since it follows the same story but from Gus’s perspective. I missed so much of what is happening elsewhere since it’s been awhile since I read the other book.

It's sort of an overlap of the last book in the Firebird Chronicles. Told from Gus' point of view.
The bits with Caius in it were the best. As usual there's a lot of world building in her first few books in the series. Can't wait to get to the juicy bits. Excited!

Verdict: The scene has been set.

didn’t even know this existed until 2 minutes ago and I cannot express how excited I am!!!! so glad I found out late, but I already know I’m going to want a second book immediately after and will be back to the state I was in when I was waiting for all of the Firebird Chronicles books to come out 😭

Finally read it! I just need more bro. I want more Kira. I want more Jin. I want more on the forty-three. Both their lives now and their past and *hopefully* their reconciliation. At least the ones that didn’t participate in the betrayal. Sequel now please!!

I should have waited for the trilogy to be finished...

T.A. White has done it again. I absolutely loved everything about Botanical Mischief, but now I'm stuck waiting for the next installment!

Gus is an incredible protagonist. Getting to see her inner thoughts, her logic, and her perspective was one of the best parts of the book. However, the people in her life definitely tested my patience. The toxic dynamic with her siblings made my blood boil, and Ryan is a massive jerk who clearly just uses her for his own ends.

Despite the frustrating secondary characters, the writing and world-building completely hooked me. I cannot wait to read the rest of the books in this universe!

📖Genre & Tropes📖 : scifi romance x suspense plot x companion novel x quiet but badass heroine x past trauma x no romance yet

⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐~⭐

ATTENTION: Theoretically, you can read this book without having read the Firebird Chronicles series, but I highly recommend reading it first—especially the volume “Echoes of Insurrection”, which takes place concurrently—otherwise, you might miss out on quite a few things !

The start of a new series featuring the mysterious Gus, ushering us in a whole new era in the Tuann universe !

The Firebird Chronicles is one of my favorite series, so I was SO excited about a new installment—and this time, one featuring Gus, one of the mysterious "43"!

And yet, I’m torn about it ><

I absolutely loved experiencing the plot of “Echoes of Insurrection” from a different perspective—specifically Gus’s ! We know so little about the 43, so seeing how they interact with one another was fascinating ! The knowledge that things are about to change—that they’ll have their own House and won't really be "the 43" anymore—really captivated me, and I can't wait to see how they handle it all !

Gus was a fascinating character : I loved that she prefers plants to people, I was intrigued by her powers, and I liked that she was scarred by life (which explains some of her reactions that might seem inhuman).

Special mention to Ryan, whose point of view we get here (and who is surprisingly super sexy—something I hadn't anticipated at all, and now I WANT MORE !!).

It wasn't a total favorite for me because, contrary to what was advertised, it didn't feel like a full new volume launching a new series : to me, it felt more like a bonus novella for the main series. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I’d read it that way, because I was expecting something bigger ! That said, I think I’ll enjoy the upcoming volumes more !

All in all, a prequel volume set in an exciting sci-fi universe, launching a series that promises to be amazing ! I can’t wait to get my hands on the next volume and see how Caius finds Gus !

First of all, I LOVED the integrated plant aspect of this book. As an avid plant collector, this was absolutely my vibe. 🌿🤣 Interestingly, it's the second book in the last few weeks where the main character has some kind of connection to plants. Apparently that's my niche now.

Fair warning: if you haven't immersed yourself in the Firebird Chronicles, you're probably not going to fully appreciate all the intricacies and connections in this story.

And, as always, T.A. White continues her favorite hobby of dangling slow-burn romance in front of readers. She gives you just enough to make you hopeful, but holds enough back that you're constantly wondering if it's ever actually going to happen. 🤔🤣 Riot-worthy behavior, honestly.

Gus (because there is absolutely no way I'm attempting her full name) took me a while to connect with. Her level of apathy could have made her difficult to like, but her instinct to protect others gave me major Kira vibes, just with significantly less chaos. Although... we've only just met her. There is still plenty of time for her particular brand of crazy to emerge. 🤣

I was definitely hoping Gus and the low-key MMC would start catching feelings, but White seems determined to lean into political intrigue, duty, sacrifice, and star-crossed lovers with this newer series. Still, hope springs eternal. With the formation of a House for the 29, who knows what possibilities are opening up? 👀

Of course, there's intrigue, traps, action, and adventure, all the things T.A. White does so well. My biggest struggle was that side character development felt pretty limited. This book very much felt like it was setting the stage for what's to come, which left it feeling a little empty in one area that's always important to me: character development.

Overall, a solid start to what feels like a much bigger story. Now excuse me while I sit here and speculate wildly about where White is taking us next. 🌱✨

White introduces the book with a statement that "Botanical Mischief" can be read on its own but will work better for people who have read her "Firebird Chronicles". I believe she is mistaken; this book will not work for people who have not read FC. The introduction provides tidbits of background, but cannot tell the reader why certain characters are important, why certain events have resonance, why important characters are behaving oddly. This is more of a problem because "Botanical Mischief" and "Echoes of Insurrection" are taking place simultaneously and in the same settings.

Most of the action in EoI takes place on the space station Titan. Gus, the protagonist of "Botanical Mischief" ('Gus' is short for Pityrodia Augustensis - you guessed that right?) is a member of The Forty Three. They are forty-three children who were kidnapped, experimented upon, and given powers - and escaped. They are powerful and dangerous, and not necessarily sane. Gus was the wimp of the lot, and doesn't get much respect. The Forty Three do not suspect that Titan is, in important respects, hers. Or that her botanical affinity is more dangerous than it seems.

"Botanical Mischief" establishes the main characters of a new series. Mainly it establishes Gus, who starts out behaving as mouse-like as she is thought to be, and ends the book having grown - or perhaps displayed - a spine. It does not end with Gus having any obvious goals. The book starts with her being roped into intrigues she doesn't care about, and one guesses that the followup will start the same way.

The book is worth reading if you are reading and enjoying "The Firebird Chronicles". It is not as good as TFC, in part because the main character is passive and reactive - and just not as interesting.

Sorry for the rambly review but I'm not sure it's worth a full in-depth review as I enjoyed this enough to stay up late to finish reading it, however the book felt short and left me empty when I finished it last night. It's in the same universe as her "Firebird Chronicles" but is supposed to be a stand alone story tangentially connected to the first series with guest appearances

This book is interesting for sure as you learn about Gus, her situation, and the life she carved out for herself, also who doesn't love plant powers (me. i love plant powers)

i quit reading the "Firebird Chronicles" after book 4?? i think?? because while the world building and politics is interesting the main character Kira gets annoying after 4 books of "DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DOOOOOO!!!!" and acts like she's 19 or something idk even though she's a grown ass adult

now after reading this new book i might go back to read book 5 and 6 just to catch up and see how it connects, but then there's the main character Kira 🫴

which is a shame because the books had started out so good!

this particular book however had some good ideas tbh but it really needed to be a bigger book and it never digs into the cool ideas or sci-fi elements like what life on Titan is like - the moon, the people, the environment, what it means to live out there. it's kind of hand waved away and just used as a cardboard background for the story.

like this all would be so good if it were better kind of dealie (insert Knives Out "compels me though" meme)

I got two books deep in T.A. White’s The Firebird Chronicles before I had to stop, so I wasn’t sure how this would go. Botanical Mischief is set in the same world as Firebird, and our protagonist, Gus, appears in that series as well, so it was really a toss-up as to whether or not someone who wasn’t a fan of Firebird would like this regardless. Spoiler alert: I did! My main issue with the other series was how much I disliked Kira’s hair-trigger temper and often unwise obstinacy, but Gus wasn’t anything like her. Gus is mysterious, taciturn, obsessed with plants, and highly skilled in her specialties. I really enjoyed following her internal monologue about how much of a hassle everything but her plants is.

The supporting cast was filled with equally intriguing characters, although Ryan and Caius bear the brunt of my interest. Their POV chapters were unexpected but highly appreciated, so I hope the author sprinkles more of those throughout the next installment!

The story itself didn’t have much meat to it, with Gus falling into the events despite her preference for isolation, but I have faith that her world will only grow to be more colorful and exciting as these books progress. Some people have called her an unsympathetic character, and while I understand that thought process, I find her almost callous disregard for others refreshing. I look forward, however, to seeing her hard exterior crack to reveal the lonely, kindhearted person she truly is.
