August 18, 2026I hadn't known that Amish romances were a popular subgenre, so when NetGalley offered this one, I grabbed it, figuring (correctly) it would be just the ticket for late night reading before turning out the light.
It's gentle and positive, with a mystery tying together the very tentative romance of Jeanne and Matthew, a quilter/seamstress and a construction worker respectively. They've known one another since school--no surprise as they live in a small Pennsylvania community called, delightfully, Bird-in-the-Hand.
This romance is so squeaky-clean that sheltered twelve-year-olds curious about how you get from friendship to romance could read it. Midway along there is a wedding, but not a single blink about wedding nights, that squeaky-clean. It's full of kindness, and faith, and family, and community, with the intrusion of a mystery centering around the property of an elderly friend of Jeanne's. (Nothing too terrible happens.)
If I had any complaints it's that certain key points get repeated over and over, with very little progression in the road to romance until three quarters of the way to the end, each so uncertain, and while they talk about everything else, they don't address the issues before them, instead falling back on the same problem we were introduced to at the beginning. (And when Matthew finally speaks to Jeanne's dad--this is scarcely a spoiler as this is a romance!--it's off-stage, alas.)
But that's a relatively small matter. All the rest is just lovely, maximum overdrive on heartwarming. I'd happily read the next!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is set in Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania. The main characters are Amish, although from my knowledge they seem more Mennonite since they have telephones in their businesses and some other modern equipment. But that's neither here nor there.
Jeannie Graber is an adult twin whose brother is getting married very soon. She has temporarily moved out of their parents' home to where he lives so he and his fiancee are not alone until they are married. Jeannie works at Graber Fabrics, owned by her parents.
Matthew Fisher is someone Jeannie has known, although not very well, for many years in school and after. Matt is a carpenter working for his brother Dennis' construction company. He wants a promotion and feels like Dennis, who raised him after their parents died when he was 7, still treats him like a child. He's 27! He's ready to lead a crew.
Jeannie gets asked about the quilts sold at Graber Fabrics. She made some of them. Two Englishers ask if she would teach them to quilt and she replies they don't have any sewing classes. These women tell her that she should and they would gladly take classes to learn from her.
This gets Jeannie thinking. She eventually comes up with a plan and gets reluctant permission to put a classroom in the big back storeroom where she could teach the classes.
As she is considering what is needed, she draws plans. She talks with Matt, knowing he works in construction, and the two of them begin to make it happen.
One of her older friends in her 80s, Esther is excited about the lessons. Jeannie asks her to help with the sewing classes. She's not keen on the idea, but she agrees to be there.
During the first sewing class, Esther does not show up. She then can't be found. This is a mystery that Jeannie and Matt try to solve.
There's another mystery--a guy who showed up in town and convinced Esther that he is related to her through one of her children who did not stay Amish and doesn't keep in touch with her much. He drives a beat up truck, has sleeves of tattoos, and terrible hair. When asked questions by Jeannie or Matt, he doesn't really answer or gives answers that seem like lies. Who is he? Is he related to Esther? And what is he looking for?
This is a wonderful read. Both Jeannie's and Matt's insecurities and hopes seem very real. Their journey to getting to know each other was both fun and frustrating! I wanted to tell Matt, several times, to just do it--ask her father's permission to date her! But it seemingly took forever with me rooting them on every step of the way.
I did not know until a few minutes ago that this book is a sequel to A Heart Set Free. I haven't read that. But considering how much I enjoyed this one, I think I'll go find that book!

Edge-of-Your-Seat Suspense and Authentic Amish Fiction at Its Finest
I expected A Heart to Cherish to be better than Book 1 (A Heart Set Free), but I was not expecting it to be three times better! A Heart Set Free was a solid 5-star read for me, and since I can't give this one 15 stars, I guess I’ll settle for 5 as well. This series by Amy Clipston is phenomenal, and the touching letter she writes to her readers at the end of the book is just as good as a novel.
Once again, we are treated to a couple navigating mirroring conflicts—this time centered around vindication and complex parental dynamics—and they are severely underestimated. I was rooting for them just as passionately in their careers as in their personal lives. The cover was fantastic, though I didn't realize just how perfect it was until the unexpected mystery unraveled. This story had me on the edge of my seat with genuine suspense, which is rare for Christian thrillers, and this is only romantic suspense.
My niece is looking to get into Amish fiction, and I think this series may be the ultimate gateway. It is brilliantly written, feeling modern and accessible while maintaining complete authenticity.
Recommend to others: Definitely. If you're looking for an exquisite Amish Fiction series, this one is a winner and has you covered!

Some stories feel like a gentle invitation to slow down, settle in, and remember what matters most—and A Heart to Cherish by Amy Clipston is one of them. Set in Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania, this heartfelt Amish romance beautifully blends faith, dreams, love, and a touch of suspense. This was such a great story to get lost in, and we are given a lot in this read!
A book that offers some sweet romance, along with some danger that the two main characters meet head on.
Jeannie Graber wants to spread her wings, but lack confidence, Matthew Fisher wants to become a leader in his brother's construction business, and a budding romance between them, maybe?

A HEART TO CHERISH was a sweet, charming love story and I absolutely enjoyed every page of it. Jeannie and Matthew were easy to root for, both of them carrying dreams, insecurities and hopes that felt very real. Their journey had that lovely mix of tenderness and faith that I always enjoy in an Amish romance and watching their relationship grow side by side was a pleasure.
One of the biggest bonuses for me was the suspense woven into the story. It added an extra layer of interest that kept me fully invested, not just in the romance but in everything happening around Jeannie and Matthew. I loved how the mystery deepened the pull of the book and gave the story even more heart. Amy Clipston writes warm, engaging stories that feel both comforting and compelling and this one was no exception.

Through it all, they each must overcome feelings of doubt and not being good enough for others, which are a bit of a stumbling block.

I loved Matthew and Jeannie and their tentative, very slow-burn romance. The way they’ve been pinning for each other secretely and the fears and doubts they experience as they try to explore those feelings is gorgeous.
They’re both compelling characters, with their youth, innocence and insecurities, but also with a refreshing boldness that makes them fight for their dreams and projects.
Each is a bit unsure about the other’s feelings. Matt’s backstory is one of loss and grief; Jeannie struggles with anxiety. Their families are a place of comfort and love, yet can also arise doubts and uncertainty.

Loved this story that is about Jennie and Matthew. Jennie's idea to teach sewing classes, her twin brother Jerome getting married and Esther's disappearance ( a mystery) that Jennie and Matthew follow through. Dennis showing some respect for Matthew.
