I got to chapter three and just couldn’t continue on. The storyline in the blurb and description of the book seemed great. It had troupes I even tend to like. However, it was too descriptive for me. For a fictional book, it read more as a non fiction with how much description was imbedded into the story. Also, as someone who does not speak Portuguese/Spanish, some of it was hard to follow along. Having to try and look up a word every five minutes just made me lose disinterest even more. And then there were words that was more of local slang that you couldn’t really look up a definition for. Now on a more positive note, the book does show that the author did her research very well for the setting of the book. Even though this book wasn’t for me, I know others will definitely enjoy it. So please don’t let my review deter you away from the book if you are really that interested in reading it.
a richly layered historical mystery that blends crime, politics, culture, and corruption into an atmospheric story set in Colombia. it begins with the disappearance of priceless Muzo emeralds. then expands into something much larger, touching on power, greed, faith, violence, and the hidden systems that protect dangerous people.
Ciro brings a calm, observant presence to the story, and the mystery unfolds through a web of characters, secrets, and intersecting crimes.
for readers who enjoy historical atmosphere, political intrigue, and a complex investigation with many moving pieces.
