Ladies of Inspiration #1

Inspired by Grace

Rate this book
“She was never the demure lady who was afraid of getting her petticoat dirty. He was never the calm and collected lad who coddled her. What had started as friendship had evolved into something quite tangible . . .” A lady always hopes that the man she falls in love with will sweep her off her feet in a dramatic and graceful way. Well, for Grace Iverson, at least it was dramatic. Her childhood best friend, Gavin Kingston—now His Grace, the Duke of Huntsman—is still just as clumsy as ever. Despite their painful separation as children, a chance encounter has offered them a second opportunity for happiness. But after ten years apart, they both carry hidden scars. Trust takes time. And soon, forces from the past threaten to destroy the love they both have hoped for all of their lives. Can Grace’s best friend break down her emotional fortress and prove his love before she disappears from his life a second time? This lovely Regency romance started well before either of them knew what they wished for in a partner; but it will surely be one that stands the test of time.

Jeanna is a mother of three daughters, all of whom are well versed in all things Pride and Prejudice. She most definitely would say they are her best friends. She shares her best and worst days with them and they share theirs with her. She also proudly states she is the eighth of thirteen children. When she isn’t scrapbooking, quilting, or cooking, she is thoroughly ignoring her house for a few hours at a time in order to read yet another fan fiction novel. Somewhere between being a mom, a sister, a cook, and a best friend, she squeezes in three 12 hour shifts a week as a Registered Nurse in a Neurological ICU. She raises chickens, helps her daughter run a rabbitry, and gardens as much as she can. In all her still-under-forty years, she has never claimed to be as happy as she is now. Out of this mindset came a surge of creativity that simply had to be written down. Since she finished Mr. Darcy’s Promise, she has stated several times that she has gained something no one can take away from her; hope for her own Mr. Darcy. More than anything, she hopes to prepare her three best friends to look for their own Mr. Darcy and to settle for nothing less.

In Love with Your Best Friend

TYPE OF NOVEL: Traditional Regency Romance

SETTING: London, 1818

MAIN CHARACTERS:

Gavin Kingston, Duke of Hunstman: A former naval captain and a second son who never expected to step into his father’s role. Carefree and affable during his youth, Gavin has always had the misfortune to be a little bit clumsy.
Grace Ingrid Genevieve Iverson: As a child Grace was fearless and a little bit of tomboy. At the age of twenty-four she still remains unmarried and has traveled to London to see if she can make an eligible match.

Joining Gavin and Grace in this original story are Gavin’s sweet mother and his close friends – the quick-witted Mr. Silence and the compassionate Mr. Harrison, and many others

WHY I WANTED TO READ THIS NOVEL:

- Have read everything Jeanna Ellsworth has published and have loved them all!
- I love Traditional Regency Romances! These stories are about Jane Austen’s world and oftentimes in Jane Austen’s style but introduce readers to a whole slew of new characters!

WHAT I LOVED:

- A Tale of Long Lost Friends: Due to death, tragedy, and separation Gavin and Grace haven’t seen each other for ten years. Former childhood companions who lived on neighboring estates, Gavin and Grace shared more than laughs and pranks. At the young ages of fourteen and sixteen, words love and promises were just beginning to be spoken and made. And though separated and disconnected for a long period of time, Gavin and Grace both held onto precious memories of their past together. *sigh* I love it when friends become lovers!

- Instantly Likable Characters: From page one I found myself drawn to these endearing and accessible characters! Gavin is adorable – he is protective, impetuous, and brave. He reminded me of Mr. Bingley as he seems to be a man of fast and impulsive action and not afraid to do a little flirting with the ladies, but at the same time he has doubt about himself and others, and must learn to overcome these doubts… And you cannot help but care for and admire Grace – she is strong, independent, and spirited. But because she has been hurt in the past, Grace has some serious walls built around her heart though and finds it hard to place her trust in others.

- Wonderfully Balanced: Just the perfect amount of conflict, romance, drama, and action! I loved the various and unique obstacles Gavin and Grace had to traverse – avenging his father’s death, overcoming self-doubt and insecurities, and learning to let yourself trust in others and face the unknown future. In addition, there was a lovely inspirational message woven in, one that didn’t feel heavy or preachy. Overall, I found myself perfectly satisfied with all the balanced scenes of tension, contention, and sweet, tender devotion!

WHAT I WASN’T TOO FOND OF:

- Sometimes Felt Disconnected: It’s a little hard for be to describe, but I sometimes felt disconnected to Gavin and Grace and their past (like something was missing). While their past together is outlined, described, and sometimes illustrated in flashbacks, what happens during their years apart is just briefly told to the reader. They both seem to have faced a lot of change during these years apart and carry some emotional baggage. I felt myself wanting to understand Grace’s feelings better and feel a stronger emotional connection to her sadness and loneliness.

CONCLUSION:

Fans of clean Regency romances will be elated with Jeanna Ellsworth’s latest offering – Inspired by Grace! While you may not encounter Darcy and Elizabeth in this tale, you will be more than happy to meet the acquaintance of Gavin, Grace, Mr. Silence, Mr. Harrison, and others! As with all Ms. Ellsworth’s stories, Inspired by Grace is full of meaning, inspiration, and heart, and I for one dearly hope she continues to gift us with many more traditional Regency romances!

“She was never the demure lady who was afraid of getting her petticoat dirty. He was never the calm and collected lad who coddled her..."

This inspirational regency romance will make you laugh and cry throughout! Swiftly paced from start to finish, the story is well thought out and intriguing, while remaining sweet and lighthearted in traditional regency style.

Inspired by Grace possesses a charming cast of characters that Jeanna writes in such a way that you feel as if you've known forever. Both hero and heroine were remarkable! and remarkably human; which I always appreciate in a novel. It is so much harder to enjoy a book with surface and/or perfect characters that no one can relate to.

Ms. Ellsworth's style is so comfortable and she has such a way with the regency era that I sometimes wonder if time travel is real and we have an 1800's authoress in our midst. (Perhaps a good friend of Jane Austen, herself.)

I loved that (even though this is not a Jane Austen fan fiction novel as some of the authors other stories are) one of Austen's stories was still incorporated into Inspired by Grace. It added a certain charm and air to the story that I can't quite explain. Read and see for yourself!

I always look forward to your new releases, my friend. (Even if they do cause me to lose sleep and to sometimes detach from reality. ^_^)

4.5 Stars!!

I loved Inspired by Grace by Jeanna Ellsworth! I found this sweet regency romance to be delightful! The story flowed nicely and kept me engaged!

As children, Gavin and Grace were the best of friends. They spent many of their summer days together, and when apart they would secretly exchange letters with the help of Gavin’s sister. But that all came to an abrupt end when the letters stopped, and Grace moved away. Both Grace and Gavin felt abandon by the other.

Ten years have passed, and Grace is back in London for the season. It's the hope of her sisters (now that her parents are gone) that she find a good match. Walking down the street Grace and Gavin, now the Duke of Huntsman, literally collide with each other in front of Gavin’s London home.

After finding out that Grace’s mother passed away three years earlier, Gavin’s mother offers to sponsor her, and the Duchess is determined to find Grace a husband. She also would like to find a wife for Gavin.

I adored watching Gavin and Grace as they renew their friendship. They certainly have more than a few misunderstandings to work through.

I found it amusing that Gavin had read Persuasion by Jane Austen, and he encourages Grace to read it, hoping she would see something similar to their situation.

I truly enjoyed Inspired by Grace! It’s definitely one of my favorites by Jeanna Ellsworth. Well done!

FTC Disclaimer: I received a paperback of the book from the author. The review is of my own doing and is my honest opinion.

4.5 Stars - I won this book in a giveaway and couldn't be happier. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel and finished it in a day. Both characters were endearing and real with flaws. I loved reading about their shenanigans together as best friends growing up. I was also shocked at what happened ~3/4 through the book, which rarely happens. I also enjoyed the theme of grace in the novel. I did have some minor quibbles regarding the lack of detail regarding the missing ten years. Their past was blamed for some of their poor decisions/assumptions and I would have liked to understand better. This did not interfere with my overall enjoyment of the book and I recommend it if you like Regency fiction.

Grace Iverson has not seen her childhood best friend, Gavin Kingston—now His Grace, the Duke of Huntsman—in ten years. Tragedy has struck and now Grace, in reduced circumstances, has been taken under the protection of Gavin's mother for The Season. And The Duchess of Huntsman has a mind to see Grace married before The Season is out! However...

It was obvious to me from the beginning these two are destined for each other. And yet forces from the past try to intercede taking us on a bit of an anxious roller coaster ride before we find our HEA.

Author Jeanna Ellsworth writes with a sweet, unhurried, and well-detailed style. Though modern phrasing pops up occasionally and I thought the story might have been tightened, it did not lessen my enjoyment. I am very happy to recommend this to anyone looking for a lovely Regency romance. Btw, that cover is gorgeous!
(This ebook was a gift which was quite a surprise in my email.)

I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet and inspirational story about two childhood best friends who meet ten years later and have a second chance at love. I loved the witty dialogue between Gavin and Grace and enjoyed seeing how they were able to deal with past hurts and insecurities.

There were parts of this story that I really loved. I know that the author honored her own daughter with this book and so her details about the meaning of the word "grace", in context, from the Bible and from the dictionary, were not only sweet but added to the story line as the two protagonists reflected on their own behaviors.

However, I must say that there were times I wanted to reach in and shake both of these characters. Their relationship was one of "Best Friends" according to what each thought and said. They grew up together, played together, defended each other and corrected each other. Then they were separated, with promises to write (despite rules), for 10 years and each thinks that the other has totally dismissed them from memory when no letters are received. We learn that family has conspired against them but they didn’t know that. He, a second son (a spare) who has chosen the Navy as his profession, becomes the Duke of Huntsman upon his older brother’s death while she experienced a major change in circumstances due to her father’s death. Her season, her coming out and the courtship she was experiencing abruptly end.

When Grace and Gavin meet again, due to his perpetual clumsiness (lack of grace) in colliding with and knocking her down, a renewed relationship is kindled as his mother insists on sponsoring Grace for another season. Here things get sticky. They are living in the same household, but the rules of etiquette seem to be ignored more often than not. Mom sets down rules, which don’t seem to be obeyed strictly. Oh, dear!

They seem to blow hot and cold in their opinions as to what the other thinks, feels and does. They admit feelings to themselves but then can’t seem to interpret correctly those of the other. I got the picture in my head of a person holding a daisy in hand and saying, “He/she loves me, loves me not.” A Mr. Silence and a Mr. Harrison (dear stuttering man) support our dear couple in their own ways, giving words of advice as to what they observe.

He has a reputation as a flirt. (Sailors have a girl in every port, don’t they?) While for her: an old flame, Mr. Broadbent, shows up and hints at things which are interpreted in the worst of ways. In the background is the fact of Gavin Kingston’s father’s death and the search for the perpetrator. Several characters’ roles intertwine here, we learn. Another death: is it an accident? There is, also, that footman who doesn’t seem to understand his role both upstairs and downstairs. This was a short sweet story well worth an afternoon’s respite. I have read and enjoyed this author’s other books, also.

BTW: I found her nickname, Gigi, taken from Grace Ingrid Genevieve Iverson very imaginative on the author’s part.

Quick summary: Inspired by Grace is a Regency romance by Jeanna Ellsworth about childhood best friends whose lives have separated them for the past 10 years. Gavin Kingston is struggling to come to terms with the tragic deaths of his father and older brother, which forced him to assume the title of Duke of Huntsman, a title he despises. Grace Iverson is in London to find a husband, attempting another Season after her last was cut short by the death of her mother three years prior. A chance (and clumsy) encounter reunites the pair, and their friendship resumes as if they had not parted ways when she was just 14 and he was 16. Still, a lot has changed in the last decade; Gavin needs to learn the many meanings of grace, and Grace needs to learn to trust. But will they find a way to be together before the hurts in their pasts converge and conspire to keep them apart for good?

Why I wanted to read it: I hadn’t yet read a Regency romance that wasn’t a variation of a Jane Austen novel, and I’ve enjoyed Ellsworth’s previous Austen-inspired novels.

What I liked: Ellsworth always manages to inject some humor into her novels, and I laughed out loud several times while reading Inspired by Grace. I especially loved the banter between Grace and Gavin’s friend, Mr. Silence. Grace and Gavin are wonderfully flawed, and I couldn’t help but compare Grace to Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice. The romance is sweet and passionate but clean, and the Christian elements are obvious but never heavy-handed. Moreover, there is plenty of tension and excitement when a face from Grace’s past appears and upends her newfound happiness.

What I disliked: Nothing! The novel was simply a pleasure to read.

Final thoughts: Ellsworth has a knack for creating likeable, well-developed characters, and I was sad when it was time to say goodbye to Gavin and Grace. The many meanings of grace are woven skillfully and seamlessly into the novel, and readers of any faith may find it a useful lesson in their own lives. Inspired by Grace is a charming novel about love built on friendship, how true friends bring out the best in each other, and how happiness requires learning to trust.

2 stars, personally. [Clean Fiction with a bit about God's grace discussed a couple times.]

Friends to lovers? Yes. Best friends to lovers? Yes, please.

Decently well done on sharing their past without feeling like a recap or leaving the reader out of the loop. A few were recap-ish, but not too bad.

A kiss that was shared (& remembered) by 14 and 16 year old main characters was a bit much for their ages, but my goodness, they have more chemistry than a lot of other couples I’ve read about throughout the years. He has it so bad for her and I think that's adorable.

One thing that I don't think was clear enough in the discussion that Grace and Gavin had about God and His Grace though was that you have to be repentant to receive that grace. It felt brushed to the side, in my opinion. A few quotes from that part: “Well, I know that God loves us. He forgives us when we repent, but grace is somehow more than forgiveness, right?” “True. God’s grace applies to all of His children, no matter––” “No matter how sinful?” “Yes.” “Even if I kissed a few ladies?” he asked with a grimace. She kissed his hand and laughed. “Of course. Gavin, there is not a human on the earth who has not sinned. God’s grace is available for everyone.”" There's a bit more discussion, including "None of us are perfect. We all make mistakes. All that matters is that we are trying, that we are improving. He only asks us to do our best,”" Which, hmm, yes, do you best, but also turn away from your sinful actions and ask for forgiveness. Also, they talk a bit about the gift of Grace and Gavin (of course) makes a comment about her being the gift, which made me uncomfortable.

This was one of those books where everything I care about is handled and the couple being adorable makes you think the end of the book is near, but then you look down and panic because you still have 40% of the book left.

And that’s when Gavin started questioning Grace’s motives—his best friend, the girl he loves! A couple hints from a man he already knew was a piece of work made him lose a bit of faith in Grace! Let me quote a classic regency phrase when I ask Gavin “have you taken leave of your senses?!” That arc and what happened because of it took a star off of my rating. Honestly, I’m tempted to take two stars off for his blunders because I hated those parts.

So, hmm. The first 60% was good and there was even some faith content that I didn’t expect to see, but the last 40% was angsty and more kissy that I prefer. A bummer for sure because I love this trope.

Main Content-
A couple prayers; Gavin thinks for God to give him patience before he kisses Grace again, but then actually stops and prays for God to make him the man Grace deserves (which is his first prayer in six months); Grace and Gavin discuss God and His Grace after she finds him reading the Bible (which is implied that he doesn't read the Bible everyday; more thoughts on their discussion above); Mentions of God & His Grace; Mentions of David and Goliath; A woman tells a man to "rot in hell".

"Thank God" is said once (somewhat flippant); "By gads" is exclaimed; A mention of a sound being "god-awful"; A mention of damning evidence; Mentions of curses & Grace saying made-up curses (like "dragon's alive", "giblets", "heathen's milk", "ares's snake").

Self-defense, hearing a murder, & seeing lots of blood (up to semi-detailed); Gavin no longer drinks alcohol & while is tempted at one point, still does not drink; Mentions of deaths, murders, duals, & grieving (including parents and a sibling, barely-above-not-detailed on grieving and up to semi-detailed on the cause of deaths); Mentions of alcohol, drinking, & (Grace detests alcohol because of the feeling of not being in control of her body and Gavin recently swore off drinking); Mentions of jail & scams; Mentions of a childhood dog being hit by a carriage & killed (barely-above-not-detailed).

Many kisses (up to detailed); Recalling kisses (including one as teenagers, up to detailed); Hand kisses; Lots of Touches, Embraces, Smelling (up to semi-detailed).

; A man makes a few innuendos towards Grace.

Many mentions of kisses, kissing, touches, & embraces (up to semi-detailed); Mentions of mistresses & ladies of the night; Mentions of reputations, being ruined, & couples being caught in compromising situations; Mentions of a man "having a taste [of a woman's] sweetness" & him devouring her with his eyes; Mentions of flirting, blushes, & jealousy; A few mentions of a woman who was compromised and her being sent away to give birth; A couple mentions of low-cut gowns; A mention of a woman having difficulty carrying a child to full term (implied she's lost a few); A mention of a couple's entertainment on a honeymoon.

Gavin was a flirt and had a women at every port when he was a sailor, but says he never did anything more than steal a few kisses; Gavin's brother was a womanizer who had mistresses for hire and used ladies of the night (neither looked upon as good or bad, but more of a "what can I do about it?" tone); A mistress tells a man that "you continue to hurt [your wife] just so you can gratify your desire for a second course!".

This was a freebie and from an author I was not familiar with so I thought I'd give it a try.
The story of a reunion of childhood friends after 10 years was nice. It was not boring and flowed well. No grammar/editing problems. :)
However, I had a few issues with the style, which cost a star. For example, when speaking to a footman, Gavin uses Grace's given name instead of referring to her as Miss Iverson. There is a bit too much familiarity with the servants, especially for a ducal house.
For those of you worried about sexual content, there is only a bit of kissing, and it is not even steamy.

This is the new Darcy and Elizabeth!

This regency romance is a scrumptious alternative to a Jane Austen P &P Variation! The two main characters are Grace ( Gigi) and Gavin! They are the new Darcy and Elizabeth! The story is fun, romantic sprinkled with just the perfect amount of tension! Grace is a determined, independent, intelligent and witty woman who is quite settled in her ways and she knows what she wants. Gavin (Duke of Huntsman) who is at the mercy of his mother and the seasons endless run of women looking for husbands, is determined to remain single. When he leaves the house one morning and collides with an old childhood friend Grace, she opens up some very deep feelings he's been holding onto for years. What evolves between the Gavin and Grace is a terrific battle of wit, angst, frustration and miscommunication, but ultimately their love and passion will be declared!

I got this through kindle unlimited & was very pleasantly surprised! I will read more by Ms Ellsworth. Grace literally runs into her best friend from childhood. He has inherited a title and hates all it represents. He misses being a second son and the freedom it allowed. She has fallen in social standing since her father died and she has little income to live on.
Of course there is the romance between Grace and Gavin despite everyone trying to set Grace up with eligible bachelors. There are the catty women chasing Gavin for his wealth and title. Fairly predictable, but a cute read!

Quick and easy regency read. Liked the theme of grace throughout the book. Sometimes the two main characters were a little annoying, but it worked out.
