The Claimed by Caridad Pineiro is the second book in her Sin Hunters series. This book focuses on Victoria Johnson, a Light Hunter and Christopher Sombrosa, a Shadow Hunter. The Light Hunters and Shadow Hunters have been at odds for centuries, probably because the Shadow Hunters feed from their Light Hunter cousins.

I must admit that this book was confusing at first. So many terms are thrown at the reader: Anaru, Quinchu, Cadres, Equinoxes, etc. I had read The Lost and it still took me a while to remember and understand what was going on. A lot of information is dumped in the first few chapters. Once you get by that, the story flows nicely.

The world of the Shadow Hunters and Light Hunters is intriguing. Essentially they are beings of energy but they have been affected by the small pox virus. The Shadow Hunters, since they feed off the energies of other Hunters manifest this virus in their auras. Christopher and his cadre of Shadow Hunters do not suffer from the pox as they have found an alternate way to feed off the energies of the earth. Christopher’s father Alex wants no part of these new ways. He is power hungry and seeks out the Quinchu (leader) of the Light Hunters.

Victoria the Light Hunter leader is nearing her Equinox (sexual maturity). She was to mate with Adam Bruno (The Lost) but he found someone on his own. Victoria is attracted to the handsome Christopher but she is unaware that he is a Shadow Hunter. He too, is unaware of her Light Hunter status. Victoria’s personal guard Rafael is not too pleased that she is attracted to Christopher and wants to do anything that would separate the two. He turns to Christopher’s ex-fiancée Maya for help.

I enjoyed this love story. It was beautifully done. The relationship built up slowly as Victoria and Christopher learned about each other. The love scenes were well done and I loved the descriptions of how their auras blended. The battle scenes were exciting and I was at the edge of my seat throughout.

A few little niggling things did bother me. I understand that these are not human characters, so a coupling during an Equinox would result in a pregnancy. It was just a little quick for me. I would have liked to see these characters having some peaceful time together. The ending was a little abrupt.

I’ll be looking for the next book in the series.

Thank you to NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for a review copy of this book.

Quick & Dirty: A dark and somewhat sexy story about Light and Shadow Hunters who feed off of the power of nature and humans. A must read for those who want something a little different in their paranormal.

Opening Sentence: The flares of energy shooting off Alexander’s aura were Christopher’s first clue that his father was weak enough to be defeated.

The Review:

The Claimed by Caridad Piñeiro is the fourth in the Sin Hunter series. This is definitely a series to check out if you don’t like the same ol’ stuff in paranormal. These characters have a kind of power that deal with nature and the forces that surround us. There are Light Hunters and there are Shadow Hunters and they are mortal enemies. Each Hunter have different kinds of power and power source, while they both have their limitations. Hunters and Shadows will soon be extinct if they don’t do something about it.

Victoria Johnson is a Light Hunter Quinchu. She will one day lead the Hunters in her area. As a Quinchu, she soaks up power and gives it to others who can’t soak up their own power. She owns her own boat/surf shop. Then one day, she sees a boy severely injured in a boating accident and she uses her powers to help save him. She is seen by someone. But showing off her powers isn’t her only problem in life, Victoria needs to find a mate and soon before the choice is taken out of her hands.

Christopher is a Shadow Hunter but he isn’t like other Shadow Hunters. He is trying to save his race. He has kept his essence pure. He is on a mission to find the Quinchu with extreme power when he finds Victoria, a woman he is strangely attracted too and who might hold the key to the survival of their races. Christopher must fight his father if he hopes for any kind of a peaceful future.

The romance isn’t quite based off of mating but it is a little bit like that, it is a bit weird. Each Hunter goes through some kind of “heat”, I don’t remember what they called it, but their powers go haywire and overpower them until they find someone who is compatible. In my eyes, it felt like it was when the woman was the most fertile because the “bonding” will include getting pregnant. The story was written in the third person like a lot of romance novels are penned and there were many different POV’s besides Victoria and Christopher.

Victoria is a tough cookie but she did have some flaws that I didn’t really care for. She was willing to let her parents go ahead and arrange a marriage for her because she couldn’t find the love that she was looking for. She fights for everything but was willing to just give up when it came to something that important. Christopher is the dark, alpha male who actually tries to look at the brighter side of life because it is so easy to give in to the dark side. He doesn’t want to be sick like the rest of the Shadow Hunters. He truly fights for good.

I haven’t read any of the rest of this series but I do think it closely ties in with the third book, The Lost, as its main characters show up a lot in this book and the underlying story line ties have a lot to do with Adam and the power he welds. My real only complaint is that this book has an open ending and as far as I can tell no sequel to finish the story. One of the things that are never resolved is Victoria telling her parents about Christopher and how they were compatible.

Overall, this was a different paranormal book for me. I enjoyed it enough that I wouldn’t mind checking out how the series began but I’m a little bummed that the story didn’t end properly. If you want to read something that isn’t quite the same as the norm then I would say check out the Sin Hunter series.

Notable Scene:

As the man hurried away from Victoria, Christopher sucked in a breath to gird himself against his attraction to her and cautiously approached. When he neared, she looked his way, and there was no denying the flare of desire that stretched between them. It only grew stronger the closer he got. For a moment it seemed as if she would bolt again, but then she faced him and stood her ground.

“You seem upset. Is there anything I can do?”

“I’m sorry. I’ve just got some family things going on right now.” With a weary sigh, she shook her head, and he couldn’t contain his need to touch and try to reassure despite his concern about not knowing if he could trust her.

The second he placed his hand on her shoulder, the pull of energy arose, so in sync with his own that his center vibrated in harmony. He stepped closer to her as her eyes widened and then dilated with the pleasure created by the link.

“Why is this happening?” Victoria asked, placing her hand over his heart, creating an arc of power that only strengthened the bond between them.

With such a strong current, he could no longer deny what she was. “I think we both know the answer to that.”

Caridad has another awesome Sin Hunter novel. It took a bit at first for me to get into the story but once I got into the groove I found a fast pace action romance story. I love how the romance is kept the main focus and how the previous characters were brought into the story. I am really looking forward to the next installment. If you’re looking for something a bit different in the paranormal romance reading world this would be great series to try.

I always like a story where two different conflicts come together and Caridid does a great job in keeping the right tension and heat between Christopher and Victoria that keeps you wanting more. Victoria is strong, witty and has the right touch to keep her as leader. Christopher is very strong and cunning as he takes on his father and leads his tribe right where they need to be. The thing both have to keep in mind is there are others who don’t want both tribes together so it’s a heated battle to the end.

I would recommend that you read the first installment before this one. I recommend this series anyone who loves paranormal romance.

Between the hot and sexy plot and the interesting characters, Piñero kept me turning the pages until way too late. What is the thing about Caridad's stories that make them tough to put down? To be sure there are traitors on both sides of the battle of this series, there are heroes and there are villains. Then there are those too stuck in their beliefs to get past their prejudice. In fact, if you stripped away the supernatural element this could be any human conflict where the sides are mostly constructed of misinformation, prejudice and fear. And, maybe humanity appearing in supernaturals so we can relate is the secret to Piñero's success. Maybe the distance afforded by the differences allows us to step back and see the conflict in different ways.

This is the second in the SIN HUNTER series, so, Piñero has to dump a lot of back story and intricate world building in the first few pages. After that she deftly brings two inimical forces together. She is really great at plotting, pace and action. Throughout I was stunned by the detail and complexity of her species development. It did stand alone without much confusion except I felt I needed a little more in the energy exchange/illness issues surrounding the species.

Caridad has a unique voice too; sometimes it is fine and others it comes out as corny and overblown. For example this made me laugh:

Victoria experienced the coming of morning. Her Hunter body was attuned to the forces of nature around her, warning her that the day would soon arrive. (p. 137)

While I would certainly state it more simply, this is a matter of style and choices. It's not a huge detractor from the story, with its wonderful place by the sea and the atmosphere Caridad infuses into each page. I also quoted from an uncorrected galley and have asked for clarification that this is in the final copy and have not heard back.

I recommend this and other books by Caridad as fun reads and this series is great for pool or beach side reading and fantasy.

I had a little trouble connecting at the beginning of this book. I have read The Lost, so I was familiar with how the world was set up. But it's been several months and the world-building was a little murky as I tried to get back into the series. Our characters are a species similar to human, but more. They can gather --and in some cases, distribute-- energies from each other, from humans, and from nature. There are two factions, the Light Hunters and the Dark, and they are at war. The Dark take energies from humans and many years ago that energy infected them with a pox and stained their auras. They are the bad guys... mostly. Like I said, it's kind of murky.

Our heroine is Victoria, a leader for her (Light) clan, who takes her energies from the water. She was promised as a child to marry Adam, the hero of the last book who married someone else. Victoria is ok with the fact that her arranged marriage isn't happening. She wants a love match. But her body is reaching its mating stage and she must find a suitable partner soon, to help ensure the future of her race.

Christopher is the son of Alexander, the last book's villain. He is working to heal his fellow Dark brethren by returning to the old ways of feeding for his race. His group of followers does not feed from humans and almost all traces of the pox are gone. He crosses paths with Victoria as they both happen across a boating accident. They work together to heal an injured human and they are attracted to each other immediately.

Once we get into the romance part of the book, it really gets easier to enjoy. There's a great forbidden element to the growing relationship between Christopher and Victoria. Both are leaders who want to protect their people, but neither can ignore their feelings and attraction for one another. Each has someone in their own faction working against them, which ratchets up the tension and the danger. But I really liked watching their tentative steps toward one another. The sexual tension is great. And I love the way the sex is done. It's hot in a regular sense, but with all the "extra" elements of their species, it goes a step beyond.

I liked both main characters. They were really a great deal alike. Both are dedicated to their people, but with visions for a better future. There are also some strong supporting characters and I have my fingers crossed that the next book will feature Victoria's friend Sammie and Christopher's captain, Ryan. And as for that world-building -- the longer I read, the more I acclimated to it. So that by the second half, I was firmly entrenched. After the slow start, I ended up liking it quite well. Once you can wrap your brain around the bigger picture, it's a good story, filled with action and romance. I do recommend that you read The Lost first. 4 stars.

Ahhh! Sorry about not recording my thoughts and feelings as I read. However, in my defense I could not tear myself from this book. I did long enough to do chores and dinner.

Christopher was introduced in The Lost. We learned about him there, the tension and strife between him and his father, his want to better the life of their people.

Victoria - we learn she was the one that Adam was promised too. Not that she truly minded the breaking of that promise. Nope, no hard will there.

She and Christopher have so much in common, and damn do sparks fly between the two. But they have a lot working against them. In a way the theme almost makes one thing of Romeo and Juliet (and hope to all that is holy that the ending is different.)

Bobbie and Adam make appearances! The mention of Bobbie's family is there but we really do not see too much of her brothers and sisters. (BIG sad face) Or well as far as I got!

Victoria's friend piqued my interest. Sammie, there is more to her than meets the eye and well, in the beginning I had hoped she and Rafael would connect. Soon that notion got diabused with his assholeness. Now I am hoping she and Ryan would eventually be a pair.

Really enjoyed the uniqueness of this world. So fresh and different. Pure Elementals with no vampires, werewolfs, witches.

I can't do this to myself. I cannot put myself through the torture that is this book. I knew I was taking a risk picking up a PR because of all the watered down, odd-ball versions of the originals, and this was no exception. All the same rules but in a weird, stupid playing field that didn't fit in the modern world.

I knew this was the 4th in a series but bought it at my library's bookstore anyway and hoped it wouldn't be a problem. Suffice it to say, I was lost as the book started what with all the talk of energy forces and light and auras.

Finding out Christopher had an ex-fiancé on page 2 was something...I hate when the MCs have been married or engaged to someone else. I didn't like that at all.

The book didn't grab a hold of me. I was lost and confused and trying desperately to understand. I was so turned off by the small pox Christopher's dad had. And apparently all of the Shadow Hunters--very original name btw--can get if they get low on energy. And there's a group of older Lighter Hunters called Quinchus that feed off of energy and can't get the pox. Shadow Hunters could feed off Light Hunters and retain their energy or something that was just weird and hard to understand. I mean how gross is it that an entire race has to drain another's energy just so they won't develop sores and pustules?? Points for originality but I'll have to take them away for gross factor.

When Christopher commented that he could see the blue and silver in Maya's red aura that signaled her unease I was like that's weird. When he went on to say that he could feel the pulse of her sexual energy I was like wtf is this? And "too bad it was meaningless." Okay, enough talk about another woman's sexual needs.

I almost freaking lost it as he said he focused on the brandy instead of the heat in his lions from sitting next to Maya. It behooves me that authors have men getting aroused from other women. And this is f****ing page 4. Why don't you slam us in the head with his desire for another woman?
I was getting so sick of Christopher and his crystal decanter and the snifter and pouring glasses for everyone amidst talking about this truly weird and dull business with his dad sucking the energy out of one of his cadre members and killing him, and Lighter Hunters having energy and not getting the pox and blah blah blah. It was so boring.

The title of Anaru for Alexander, Christopher's dad, was so stupid. Most stupid than Quinchus for the Light Hunters. It sounded like a name, not a title.

"Instead Christopher sensed only a negligible draw, like that of a mewling pup at his mother's teat."
Ew. Ew. Ew. That is so freaking nasty. What man, heck, what person makes the comparison of a weak force as that of a "mewling pup" at its mother's "teat?" That is so disgusting I can barely compute that she had this man speak like that. Why do authors say these things? It's in the character's POV; you have to speak like them. And that wasn't manly in the slightest. I'm creeped out by that sentence.

I really could not take his cadre calling him Anaru and her cadre calling him Quinchu and her calling her parents Quinchus. Soo stupid.

At least a bit of their history was given. Their contact with humans weakened them and they were susceptible to small pox. And some Light Hunters lost their ability to draw energy.

I found it incredibly weak writing and a weak plot that Victoria was going through the exact same thing as Christopher. The exact. Same. Thing. He wants to break off from his dad and get back to the old way of Hunter lifestyle and wants to be leader though he isn't going to challenge his dad and fight to the death as Alexander did with his dad. He's stronger than his dad and could take him on but he doesn't want to. He was engaged to someone because they were both strong and near their Equinox, which is their mating time. Victoria searches for a new way of doing things, being vitalized by humans instead of closing themselves off. She is also stronger than her dad and makes a display in front of everyone that her aura is bigger and brighter and therefore stronger--just like Christopher used his power to subdue his dad. She could also take her parents down if she so chose, but she's not going to do that because she doesn't want a fight. She was promised to someone her whole life who broke it off; it was also a loveless match and one made of politics and power. She is near to her Equinox, the time that she'll mate. They are the same person. Bo-ring.

But what set it over the edge and made me want to vomit was that they were both looking for love. How sickening.

The only thing I found interesting was the cadre and having a captain of the cadre. It was cute how when Victoria asked Rafael what he was doing tonight he said "I guess that depends on what you're doing."

I love how humans are responsible for the downfall of the Light Hunters and that bonds with them aren't strong. Oh but wait, there are those that have Hunter in them. Hybrid humans with a touch of Hunter power deep inside. Haha It's like Christine Feehan Dark's series except much dumber. Can't seem to get away from paranormal races needing puny humans.

Case in point: as soon as her friends at the boat/kayak/whatever shop invited her to the roller derby I was like ugh. How mundane and so stupid. I have 0% interest in the roller derby and I was find it lame and cheap entertainment and did not want to sit through 1 second of hearing about it. Humans don't belong in the paranormal world. If they're going to be in there, make them cool, not loser-y. When Victoria said there was such energy around Sammie and she wondered if she had Hunter in her I was so turned off and irritated. Of course. The paranormal friend that can be in on her world. So sick of it. And when Victoria said she would have to find out I was like are you serious? Why wouldn't Victoria be able to tell if her friend is a Hunter? She is the great Light Hunter Quincha, is she not? I was even more irritated when Victoria tried to set Rafael up with her. Sammie blushed when Rafael complemented her roller skating. That's a match I don't want. I don't like humans mixing with paranormal.

Victoria came off as so ungrateful as she thought that Rafael's protectiveness felt more stalkerish. He's watching over you and protecting your life.

"It would be nice to have a boyfriend, especially one that she had picked. One that she could grow to love and bond with emotionally before her Equinox eliminated that possibility. Once her Equinox was upon her, energy would call to the most potent energy. Many an unfortunate bond had been forged that was all about the power and nothing else."

Energy calls to most potent energy? Oh my gosh. I was rolling my eyes.

I thought it was a terrible idea to have the hero and heroine meet on page 23. That's so soon in the story. I prefer to get to know each of them separately before their very identities are enmeshed and they don't spend one second apart. He walks in the place-because he really belongs at a roller derby-with Ryan, his cadre captain, and of course Ryan is light-colored and Christopher is dark and handsome and Victoria shivers the first second she lays eyes on him. Granted, they didn't speak, only saw each other, but she kept looking for him and opened her senses to see where he was, and was disappointed he had left. And by page 25 she was having "sexy dreams" about him had already dubbed him Mr. Dark and Dangerous. Oh so hot. I'm going to need to cool down from all the heat that caused...

Victoria gave Sammie a massage in the shop and I was a little wierded out. Who gives their friend a massage? It got even weirder at the end when she slapped her on the butt.

They got to talking and Jan said that Rafael likes her, actually that he was "gaga over her." Stupid, but sweet. It would be so much better if she got with him, but I know how this goes. I've read enough books to know the nice guy never gets the girl.

Victoria sounded like such a snob when she said "Rafael was a Hunter whose descendants had lost the gift of gathering energy centuries earlier. As such, he could never be a worthy mate for a Quinchu." She thinks she's really something.

I didn't care if Sammie was a Hunter or not. I don't care. I care about the main characters, not the side characters. Give her her own story, don't have her horn in on this one. And is this all the plot can offer? A guy friend that secretly likes the heroine that won't get with her, will be outstaged by the sexiest man that ever lived and will be foisted off on the dumb friend I don't like, and a best friend that may be like her? What intrigue.

W. T. F. It's been a damn long time since I've had the misfortune of finding an author that has the gall to actually have another woman touch the hero sexually. I almost lost my crap as I read that Maya climbed in bed, wrapped her arm around him and tried to touch his arousal. Which was caused by the morning and her "Hunter allure." So, these male beings get an instant erection whenever they're around any female Hunter with strong energy? Nicee. Points for trashiness will be awarded.

She went on to touch her own breast and nipple. He got out of bed, kudos for that, but was "nearly hobbled by his painful erection." For f's sake. If I can get through my life without reading about the man having an erection for another woman I'll be a happy person. When she lowered the sheet to show her breasts and he felt need and she sensed it I wanted to slam this piece of filth down. I hate crap like this. I mark trashy authors like this down and vow to never read them again. I don't do trash.

What I read after that cemented my decision as the author for some reason I cannot fathom went on to tell us about Maya and Alexander, bear in mind this is Christopher's dad, and how he makes her scream out her completion by giving her a little of his Anura power. So she's slept with both father and son. Gosh make me gag. And, to confirm my worst suspicions, Christopher had slept with him while they were engaged. Thank you for not giving us the small favor of them not having sex together. That was my last hope and it's just good to know what kind of author I'm reading. It's been so long since I've read a book like this I've forgotten what anger and disgust this potent feels like.

The only thing that made this slightly better, as in 0.1% better, was that Maya's gift is with sexual energy. She's like a succubus so she can make people feel desire.

What I couldn't understand was that no one had mentioned one detail about all of this filth going on. I checked reviews while I was in the bookstore to make sure this was worth buying and not a word was breathed about the slutty, trashiness going on. Not one person mentioned that his ex-fiancé was trying to have sex with him the whole time, again, and that she was touching her breasts and vagina as she talked to his dad about him, while she heard Alexander with another woman on the phone and he told her to work Christopher hard to find out about the Light Hunter Quincha.

Maya took it as her personal mission to be Christopher's Equinox mate. She planned to seduce him every chance she got. Oh goody. I saw where this was going. More smutty details. Betcha there's more details about Maya and Alexander than there will be between Christopher and Victoria. What does that say about an author? They can write trash easier than romance.

When Christopher went to the very spot on the ocean where Victoria was about to go kayaking I almost lost it. What ensued had me forgetting all about the author throwing them together so often so soon. Christopher mentioned he would throw the diving flag out which would explain why he was underwater so long, because he was going to go hunting. And I was like hunting what?? What happened next was beyond my stupidest expectations. He formed a vortex and it was like a vacuum in that it sucked up fish to take their vitality. He needed their "energy to partially shapeshift so he could stay below the surface long enough to do the exchange needed to rein in the demands of his Equinox." Okayy. He went on to force the fish's life force through his body and he lost some of his power as he directed the energy at his throat and had gills form. What the freak?? First he can take and use energy and there's auras and all this other nonsense, and that's enough to deal with, but to make these people actually use that energy to create gills? Um, no. Let's just handle one thing and not throw everything but the kitchen sink at this.

It was terribly over-convenient the way the author had all these Hunters and Shadows meeting up but Victoria-she's our gal, if she can't do it...everybody else can!-had no idea. She couldn't even tell if her own best friend was Hunter. Then she's setting there at the scene of the boating accident and Christopher is right there using his energy-or is it vitality?-to heal the man and she doesn't even know it. Wth?! She scans him for an aura, and he doesn't show the muddy aura of a Shadow. She looks at his eyes and they're not shining like Light Hunters, but he could be hiding the shine. Okay, let me get this straight. You could meet a Light and not know it bcuz they can hide their attributes. You could also meet a Shadow and not know it bcuz they can hide the signs. So, how do you ever know a Light or a Hunter if they can hide everything about them, even the strong energy they're using right under your nose?? This was the author's spur of the moment contrivance to have a plot. Christopher as well can't tell if she's a Hunter or what. He thinks she's human...even tho he just witnessed her using power...The author needs them to not know the truth just yet so she had them negate everything they just experienced, felt and said...That's okay, I'll just say they're both d.a.'s and leave it at that.

Victoria was so rude about finding out that Rafael did have feelings for her. He's the perfect choice and her bad attitude grated on my nerves. She's irritated that he's always watching her, compares him to a stalker. He isn't the bad guy just bcuz he likes her. The author's trying to make him the villain because he likes her, by having Victoria suddenly be bothered by his protecting her for the first time in her life...It made her so ungrateful. And of course her childhood friend suddenly has to look so bad compared to the wonderful Christopher. Who's about as interesting as a roll of toilet paper.
Flimsy plot that's hanging on by the thread the author keeps messing with, she wants beings that are at war with each other that have easily identifiable traits at the same time that she has none of the two races able to recognize each other even when the "vitality" of the other is slapping them in the face. She has an entire race be characterized by pustules, sores, rashes and dark auras, but denounces all of that by having some of them not have any of that by feeding off of natural energy. This is as wishy washy as a load in the wash machine.

"Luckily she had tempered the shot. A full-strength discharge could have literally fried all the connections of his Hunter vessel, killing him."
Wth is this crap?

"..she released a bit of her power to replace the networks that her charge had short-circuited."
Still have no idea what she's talking about. Random words are just being thrown out.

I finally quit reading this book after wanting to quit reading it as soon as I read he had an ex-fiance and got a boner from her...yeah. That's a lot to ask anyone to read. Throw in a side character touching herself, that's shacked up with father and son and compares notes on their sexual prowess, a sweet, protective man that just wants to be with the heroine who's being villainized just so we have someone the hero can protect the heroine from. No. Just no. This is where I get my life back from this piece of crap and rue the day I ever set eyes on it. Oh, and the writing is terrible. So weak, so lame and I see the heat factor is going to be lukewarm and cringe-worthy. I got past pg. 65 and Maya's sluttiness, only to have the author try to shove Rafael's wickedness in my face and I wasn't going to take it. Rafael should be the hero. I don't like the characters, they're all stupid and lame. The way they talk is so prim and proper and antiquated, yet there's modern elements like roller derby and kayaking. It doesn't go together. Now I'm back on the hunt for the good PR novels.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Although, this is the second book in the series, this is the first book I have read by Caridad Pineiro, I missed the first book in the series. That being said, I feel like this book can be read on its own but it would be helpful to have read the first book in the series as there are events that are mentioned that refer to the first book. There are a lot of new terms are thrown out at you in the beginning with the Light Hunters and the Shadow Hunters and it can be somewhat disorienting but you catch your balance pretty quickly and everything is explained in its time.

This is a fast paced novel that will not leave you bored, there is plenty going on to hold your attention. This is a tale of two natural enemies inexplicably drawn together at the worst possible time. Victoria is of the Light, she has immense power and a responsibility to her people to mate with a male of Light also with great power, the fate of her clan depends on her. She takes her duties seriously and knows what is expected of her, but the romantic residing in her heart wishes she could have more, could have love. All her life she has done what is expected of her, only this time she wants something of her own, someone of her own. She has that chance but all she has to do is go against everything she has ever been taught and stand up to her parents and lead her people in a new daunting controversial direction. I really like Victoria, she is kind and loyal. She has a vision she is willing to risk all on but mostly she cares about her people. You can’t really hate on someone who gives so much to those she loves even at the sacrifices of her own happiness sometimes. She befriends humans and her guard she treats like family. She isn’t a slave to tradition and while she respects that her parents are the current leaders she knows her strengths and isn’t afraid to throw her weight around a little.

Chris is one of the most powerful of the Shadows, hunters that a plagued with the pox, they crave the energy that the Light can provide them. Chris has parted with his father’s Shadow clan and is returning to the old ways of hunting and has set up shop practically right in Victoria’s back yard. He knows what is right and what is needed and doesn’t let fear guide him or stifle him. I like his fearless attitude, he is willing to turn away from traditions hundreds of years old and go on alone with his small band of followers, he inspires. That takes tremendous cahonies, but he pulls it off. He leaves his father and his people behind and starts all over, and his gamble looks like it will pay off as his people become less and less tainted. I love a man that goes big. If you’re going to do it go huge! Chris knows what he wants and he goes for it, even if it may seem crazy like his attraction to Victoria. He shouldn’t want her, but he does, and that little, ok big thing with her being a Light, ehh, he knows he’ll get past it and make her see what is right as well.

A chance meeting at a scene of a horrific accident leaves both Chris and Victoria longing for more, but neither knows what the other is, but they suspect something. This leaves Chris and Victoria dancing around each other with their intense attraction; they have plenty of lust which scorches off the pages but as these two dance around each other one eye is busy checking the other out and the other eye is looking for any actions to prove their distrust to of one another. When the truth comes out they know that they cannot have each other the distrust runs too deep but the possibilities could save both clans. Not everyone is eager to see the feud between Light and Shadow end; which, makes this situation ripe for betrayal and war. Before the end of the book both Victoria and Chris will lose those they love.

I enjoyed this installment; it was a refreshing read after so many vampires and were’s novels in the paranormal genre. Instead of harvesting blood they harvest energy. This is not necessarily new, but it’s not as saturated, so it’s nice to take a break sometimes and it worked in this installment. I’ll probably even go back and read the 1st book and am eager to see where Caridad Pineiro takes us with this series, we were left with possibilities for the future and the traitors are still loose!

April 24th was the release date for The Claimed, and I was the happy recipient of an early review copy. I have been following and religiously reviewing this series since its beginnings. Sins of the Flesh, Stronger than Sin and The Lost were the first three titles in this series. These are all set at the shore of New Jersey. It originally centered on the wonderful Carrera family, and now has branched out to have us meet the Hunters, both Light and Dark.

In The Lost, we learned a new species lived along with us humans. Through centuries, The Light Hunters and Dark Hunters fought with each other with massive casualties on both sides. They each had different capabilities, but the Dark ones had inherited the disease of small pox from the humans and that turned their bloodline to one of living off prey to keep the disease at bay. The Light Hunters had no such disease in their system. Unlike the Dark ones whose auras were cloudy, they had an aura that was crystal pure. Both had great individual strengths that transmitted electrical impulses which sent out in pulses could attack and harm. They also could use this strength as a conductor to heal thru their minds and hands. Each Hunter has a different ‘affinity’ and draw their strengths from different elements of nature. In The Lost, Bobbie Carrera met Adam Bruno. Their lives were changed forever in that meeting. She was a human and he was??? Adam had no idea of how strong he was, and in that book he finally learned of his past and who he was.

In The Claimed, we meet Victoria the daughter of a second Light Hunter Clan. Her parents had hoped she would be mated to Adam who was the next ruler for his clan. Victoria was reaching her mating age and like Adam she would be the next Ruler of her Hunter clan. Victoria was a Quinchu and was guarded by a cadre from her Clan. Her Captain was handsome and sexy Raphael. They grew up together and she felt he was like a brother to her. Somehow her friend, Sammie, noticed he did not look at her like a sister. What would happen if Victoria fell in love and it wasn’t to Raphael? How far would he go and to what lengths to make sure the interest Victoria shows in Christopher Sombrosa, a Dark Hunter, would not come to fulfillment?

This book is astounding, its verbal visions describing the colors and auras these two young people share, and the love story that this mating evokes. Victoria knows her time has come to mate, but she wants more than a mate, she wants the whole enchilada, love trust and partnership… Can she dare trust a Dark one? Will the clans allow a joining of Light and Dark with so much hatred between?

Ms. Pineiro, the story has everything you could want in a love story and more. We have lovers, villains, treachery, pain, bloodshed and perhaps towards the end another love story in the making? Do Sammie and Ryan have a chance as well? I so thank you for allowing me this pre release copy and I hope everyone hits Buy today on our Amazon store to continue with or START this wonderful series. You have left me breathless!

The first page of Caridad Piñeiro's The Claimed will claim you and won't let you go…

Victoria Johnson lives among humans, but she has a secret. She's next in line to become the leader of her clan of Light Hunters. Light Hunters take energy from nature and turn it into extraordinary powers. Victoria's biological clock is ticking, and it is time for her to choose the strongest mate from among the Light Hunters. To her parents' dismay, she also wants love.

She meets Christopher Sombrosa, who is also a powerful Hunter in his time of mating. Their energies align and they are irresistibly drawn to each other.

But Christopher is a Shadow Hunter, a mortal enemy of the Light Hunters.

Christopher is the son of the leader of his clan of Shadow Hunters. His father and followers take energy from humans, and as a consequence suffer from the smallpox they were infected with by the Conquistadors. Christopher has broken with his father and takes his energy from nature. He and his small group of followers have virtually rid themselves of the pox.

Victoria and Christopher propose peace between the Light Hunters and Christopher's Shadow Hunters clan. But can they overcome centuries of war and hatred, plus betrayal within their clans, to build a future for their clans and for themselves as a couple?
*****
I enjoyed The Claimed. I liked spending time with Victoria and Christoper, and the plot had tension and danger that kept me reading.

Victoria is a powerful Light Hunter, and as such she's a strong character. She doesn't hold back and let Christopher do the heavy work. Yet she's also a caring leader of her people. Sometimes she's a little too caring, and that's her flaw (that's a good thing in a novel).

Christopher is sexy and dangerous as a powerful Shadow Hunter. Piñeiro says he's a cross between Eddie Cibrian and D.J. Cotrona. Keep that in mind as you're reading and you'll be panting as you're turning the pages.

For fans of the series, Adam Bruno from The Lost (Sin Hunters, #1) plays a role in The Claimed. It was good to see him and Bobbie again. I also enjoyed getting to know Ryan and Sammie, and look forward to reading more about them in the future. The book didn't end on a cliffhanger, but loose ends were left hanging. The series continues…

Our Review [By LITERAL ADDICTION’s Pack Alpha-Michelle L Olson]:

Once again, Caridad Pineiro does not disappoint. I enjoyed this book even better than book #1, The Lost, and cannot wait for the next installment.

Those of you that read my review for The Lost may know that I wasn't so sure about this series, despite begin a huge Caridad fan, but I am so happy that I put my apprehensions aside and jumped in.

Like book #1, this was a 2 sitting wonder, and only because I was forced to put it down. As I mentioned, I thought it was even better than the first book, and I absolutely adored the characters.

Christopher is a Shadow trying to walk the straight and narrow, even though is father is diabolical, and the Light Hunters were groomed to hate all Shadows. With his best friend and cadre captain Ryan by his side, he tries to get his tribe back in order and revert back to the ancient ways to combat the plague that has been haunting them for ages.

Victoria is a Light Hunter in line to take over the ocean tribe, and living the life of a virtual human. With her best friends around her, she has a charmed life, but it's missing one thing... love.

When the two meet, sparks fly (literally) and they can't deny their unbelievable attraction. But does the whole 'Romeo and Juliet' thing ever end up being more than a tragedy? In their case, and with a lot of hard work, convinction and support... Yes. :)

This series continues to be an emotional roller-coaster full of excitement, regret, love, passion, uncertainty, betrayal, retribution, and so much more! In true Caridad Pineiro fashion it was incredibly written, with vivid imagery and strong, well developed characters.

The book was an incredible installment to the series and it just makes readers want book #3 all that much more.

In a nutshell, LITERAL ADDICTION Paranormal Book Club gives The Claimed 5 Skulls, and would recommend it to Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance and even some Sci-Fi readers.

In The Claimed, the second book in her Sin Hunter’s series. Here, we meet Victoria the daughter of the Light Hunter Ocean Clan. Her parents had planned for her to be mated to Adam who was the next ruler for his Desert clan. Victoria is a Quinchu, a ruler, guarded by a cadre from her Clan. Her Captain is Raphael. They grew up together and she thinks of him as a brother, unfortunately, he doesn’t see her as a sister. He is jealous of her interest in their arch enemy, Christopher of the Shadow Clan. In addition, Victoria’s best friend, Sammie, is showing some odd attributes.

Victoria knows her time has come to mate, but she wants more than a mate, she wants the whole enchilada, love trust and partnership and she thinks she has found that in Christopher, but can she dare trust a Shadow? Will the clans allow a joining of Light and Dark with so much hatred between? This is a classic Romeo and Juliet story. And that’s all I’m going to tell you.  Read the book. Honest. You won’t be sorry.

Victoria has a lot on her plate. She has to forge new relationships with people she isn’t sure she trusts, finds traitors where she thought there were friends, defy her parents and everything she’s been taught, and more.

The story has everything you could want in a love story and more. We have lovers, villains, treachery, pain, bloodshed and perhaps towards the end another love story in the making? It is definitely part of a series. Though I have not read the first one (yet!), there was enough back story for me to figure out exactly what was going on. The ending was mostly satisfying, but there were several major threads left dangling so that if you really want to know how everything ends up, you’ll have to continue to read (something I really dislike, but understand). Still, the story grabbed me, held on to me, and didn’t let go until the end. If you like paranormal romance with a touch of heat, definitely pick this series up.

Review: The Claimed is book 2 in the urban fantasy series Sin Hunters by Caridad Piñeiro and one that will not disappoint. Though this is the 2nd book of the series it is my first read from this author.

The Claimed has everything I like and expect in an urban fantasy/paranormal read. Love, kick-ass action, drama and awesome villains and of course steamy love making. The Claimed is a nonstop action pack story that will keep you glued to the pages. I can’t help but think of this series as a mixture of Night Huntress and Nightwalkers (2 of my favorite series/authors Jeaniene Frost & Jacquelyn Frank).

The story is well written and the plot will keep you well entertained. There is not time for boredom just kick-ass action. The battle between good and evil is taken to a whole new level. The Light Hunters and Shadow Hunters are on a fight to the death.

The characters are well developed. Christopher, Victoria, Ryan & Sammie are just some of the characters that make this story awesome. The villains are awesomely mean, I love the bad guys. I mean a story wouldn’t be a story without the bad crowd and I must say I love Alexander he makes the perfect villain. I am going to read book #1 of the series just because I found Adam fascinating. I want to read his story so I can understand his importance. This is a great read, highly recommended.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Victoria is set to run the clan of the Light Hunters as well as mating with an perfect choice and protect humans from the Shadow Hunters. Both groups can draw power from the elements but the Shadow Hunters prey on humans and the Light Hunters to gather their strength. Her clan seeks to keep the Shadow Hunters in check. Christopher is of the Shadow clan and he a few of his companions have discovered the ways of the Light Hunters by feeding on the elements instead of others and thus avoiding the virus that is claiming the members of his tribe. Of course she is thrown together with Christopher in a Romeo and Juliet setting instead of her intended mate of Adam. Of course, there are factions that would rather not have these two together like Chirstopher's ex, Maya who reminded me a bit of Jessica Rabbit (I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way) and Rafael, her guard.

Even though this is a paranormal romance, this story would still be a wonderful sci-fi fantast if it were left out. The romance actually enhances the supernatural elements of the tale. I thought is was really a nice touch when the two lovers combined auras instead of the full on typical love story. Sammi is probably my favorite minor character with her roller derby ways and that she turns out to be more than just Victoria's friend. I hope the next installment will explore more of her background since what is alluded to in this one is quite interesting. Fans of Gena Showalter and Larissa Ione should really enjoy this series.

THE CLAIMED by Caridad Pineiro is an exciting paranormal romance. Book 2 in the “Sin Hunters” series, but can be read as a stand alone. See, “The Lost”. I enjoy this author’s works, she knows how to draw in the reader with her powerful love story along with the mystery and suspense. In “The Claimed” she has pulled to enemies into a love affair for the ages with Victoria Johnson,a Light Hunter and Christopher Sombrosa, a Shadow Hunter. The two clans are mortal enemies, but Victoria draws Christopher to her with her erotic life force. Christopher who is tired of his father’s violence and his affliction, defies him and led some of his clan away. With betrayal, sensual tension, passion, uniting two warring tribes, romance and love. You can not go wrong by picking up Ms. Pineiro’s “The Claimed”. A must read paranormal romance full of excitement, brimming with sensual tension,a bit of violence and murderous clan members who would stop at nothing to from having peace between the Light Hunters and the Shadow Hunters. Received for an honest review from the author. Details can be found at Forever, an imprint of Grand Central Publishing, the author’s website and My Book Addiction and More.

Story: GOOD
Intimacy Level: GOOD
Enjoyment: GOOD

This is my first book by Caridad Piñeiro. Although I didn't read The Lost (Sin Hunters), prior, I was still able to follow the plot and storyline of the series. So I think this could be a stand alone. However,I think I will read book one for the foundation of the plot. This was and enjoyable read with a few small buts, but I was still entertain to get through the story.

Shadow Hunters and Light Hunters both are interesting paranormal concept. Shadow Hunters feed off the energies of other Hunters. Christopher who is a Shadow hunter, has found another way to feed off energies of the earth and not hunters. Victoria is a Light Hunter who is approaching her sexual need. Originally, her mate was to be someone else, but he has found another. Now that she is attracted to Christopher, this leads to an unraveling of issues at play as both Christopher and Victoria are unaware the other is a Shadow and Light Hunter.

Both characters for me were interesting, though it seems to start out slow, it then quickly picked up and left me craving more. I was not disappointed at all with the paranormal aspect of the story and it left me feeling full. I look forward to the other books in the series as I found the characters and plot to my personal liking. Thanks to the author for a good read.

This is the first I have read from Caridad Pineiro and have to say I started on a good series. This is book 2 but can probably read as a standalone. The Dark Shadows and the Light Ones are at odds again. One side was to do good which is Victoria Johnson’s family and the Dark Shadows, Christopher Sombrosa’s family are unfortunately the bad one. Yet I loved that even though he is from the bad family Chris is trying very hard to be good and bring back the peace that there once was in their families.

The one thing that Caridad Pineiro kind of got me disappointed was Maya in this book. Here is a woman who is so infatuated with Chris she doesn’t see the harm she is inflicting. Victoria and Chris warmed my heart for even though they know it is wrong to fall for one another they still strive to make it happen.

All in all it was a good book and definitely a series that will keep up to date. The story I have to say was quick and passionate in a way that makes you constantly turning the pages. Loved it.

Victoria Johnson is a young leader of her clan of Light Hunters, a race of people who take energy from nature and turn it into powers of energy. Christopher Sombrosa is a leader of a clan of Shadow Hunters, traditionally mortal enemies of Light Hunters. But Christopher and his small clan are different, and want peace. And he wants Victoria. Their energies are in sync and they are falling for each other during their time of mating. But can they get past the opposition from their peoples, make peace, and forge a life together?

Don't get me wrong--I enjoyed The Claimed. But although there was plenty of danger and betrayal, somehow it seemed lukewarm at times. I still recommend it. And I highly recommend the first book, The Lost. I look forward to reading more about Ryan and Sammie.

I have to start by saying I think this is a series you need to read in order. I made the mistake of picking up book 2 and reading it first. I will tell you I was a little, okay fine totally confused about the world that Caridad create. Not that the world itself is confusing. I just have a feeling so much happened in book one that I would highly recommend you read The Lost first. Okay with that being said now for my review.

I enjoyed this book. Didn’t love, didn’t hate, really I am on the fence about it. I wanted to badly to love Christopher and Victoria’s characters but for me I just never felt a connection with them. Now Ryan, Christophers slightly uptight second in command I like him and am hoping that his book is next.

Christopher and Victoria have a rough road ahead of them. Never before have Shadow and Light joined forces. But there seems to be so much and so many people standing in their way. But love and destiny will not be denied. Once joined nothing will stop them from trying to make the world of the Hunters better

With this book it seems like things are changing for the Hunters and so often when a big change comes it is the newer generation that foresees what needs to be done and embraces the changes that need to happen. I really liked that both Christopher and Victoria had to really look into themselves to see what they wanted from life and if they could accept an enemy into their life. Once they did that they realized that they are more alike than either realized. Working together they were stronger than apart and that was before they bonded. I also liked that the elders, while not fully backing their union, did come through at a crucial point to lend support. I am very intrigued by Sammie and what she learned. I hope that we learn more in the future.

Amazing.
I ate this story up! It was such a refreshing read. The storyline is so unique and each page just kept me so into the story I never wanted to put it down.

LOVED the conflicts Caridad threw at the hero and heroine. The sense of honor and loyalty---and love--was so intense I found myself reading faster and faster to find out what happened next.

Christopher is one of my favorite types of heroes. Strong and sensitive, dedicated to his values. Strong, but not arrogant. I just loved Christopher.

Great story, Caridad. Can't wait to see what you come up with next in this series!!! :)

What can I say but, WOW!
Take two really strong characters and put them together with an AMAZING story line....Poof!
This book has you going from page one and doesn't stop you til the very end.As you read you each page your like no flipping way or come on that so can't happen....
I couldn't put it down.
This book is so refreshing....it has the lust ....the violence...., but being paranormal....it didn't have to do with vampires or werewolves!!!

This paranormal romance has a unique world with rival groups of energy eaters. I like the mythos, such as the ability to take a part of someone's energy to shapeshift into them. The romance is decent but nothing special. Fans of paranormal romance who've exhausted other series should read this enjoyable book.

I didn't like the book the least bit... so many things went unfinished at the end and the plot of the story was pretty much predictable... to make things even worse: the language; too sophisticated for such a book.. It contradicts hideously with the content..

More like 3.75 stars rather than a full-bodied 4. This is the first time I've read this author and - as usually happens - it's not the first book in the series. While a little awkward to get into, it was interesting enough to finish. A type of "Romeo and Juliet" story, with Victoria and Christopher coming together from "feuding families." There was enough backstory that I wasn't totally lost although it probably would have been best had I read the first book... first.

I found the book was a mellow read.I found it unbelievable that the two main characters ,knowing that they had traitors in their camps, chose to ignore this and deal with it later or let them have a phone and not wanting them to contact someone.this was not reasonable. Also I found that the most powerful people couldn’t do much when in battle.I wouldn’t recommend this book.sorry
