An absurdly silly new graphic novel series following the wild antics of twins Sowan and Somi as they explore riotous food science and curious Korean treats in a haunted bakery. This recipe calls for chaos!
Somi loves logic and science. Sowan loves tradition and storytelling. Can these twins stop bickering for long enough to join forces and recreate the long lost Korean rice cake recipe that just might save their Gomo’s haunted bakery?
Twins Somi and Sowan have moved across the world to live above their Gomo’s struggling Korean bakery—only to discover the kitchen isn’t just messy, it’s cursed!
In a madcap all-nighter, the pair must dodge ghostly antics and cultural mix-ups to bake the one recipe that can save the shop. To succeed, the bickering twins—logical Somi and story-loving Sowan—must finally merge their opposing worlds of science and tradition. Science + storytelling = the perfect recipe!
This zany graphic novel series debut puts a fresh, explosive spin on Korean poltergeist lore. Bursting with chaotic humor, energetic art, and an adorable ghost sidekick, it’s a perfect blend of family secrets, food science, and supernatural hijinks.
Includes a glossary of Korean terms and a rice cake recipe.
This was such a fun ride of a book. First off, I absolutely loved the theme for this book and not forgetting who you are and where you came from. That is something that struck really well with my children as a military family that never gets to stay in one place for very long and living across the world from their family, it's very difficult for them. They were able to connect with Sowon instantly because of his love for food and his wanting to always have that family/historical/traditions connection.
I really loved all the translation notes and the adorable way the Korean words were introduced, Korean is spoken in our household but even some of these words were new to us, so it was a really fun learning experience for all 3 of us. Sowon and Somi reminded me a lot of my children as one is very analytical like Somi and I could see him using the S.O.M.I. method in our day to day life, as where my oldest is more like Sowon and holds family and traditions very close to his heart. I hope that Sowon and Somi will have future adventures that we can go on with them as well. We need to know what that beeping and KAAA! was about now!!
Thanks to NetGalley, Annick Press and the author Gayoung BB Yang (wonder seeker, problem solver!) for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Twins, Sowon and Somi, have moved from South Korea to Canada to live with their aunt. While Sowon earnestly misses the culture, foods, and traditions of their homeland, Somi is flourishing with Canada’s science and modernity. Gomo runs a bakery that is being run into the ground due to unseen occurrences. Sowon and Somi must help their aunt embrace the traditions of her youth in order to assist in her future.
This was really cute and I enjoyed that the author insert Korean to English translations throughout. I think this would be a good one for younger children to learn about other languages and cultures in a cute, fun way.
Thank you so much NetGalley and Annick Press! This book was so up my alley! I love kid's books that feature culinary arts. I love funny books. I love ghost stories. I love the artwork! I love learning about Korean culture. I loved the overall cuteness and lighthearted tone. I recommend teachers and librarians add this book to their inventory. It's a great way for young readers to learn about cooking and Korean culture.
