Prevarana. Zalezovana. Ujeta.
A preden ga odpeljejo, ji priseže maščevanje.
Biographies can be an absolute drag, so I won’t bore anyone with a long life story.
I was born in Brasilia, Brazil where I spent my childhood and teenage years. After graduating from high school, I moved to the USA where I studied psychology with specialization in criminal behaviour. During my University years I held a variety of odd jobs, ranging from flipping burgers to being part of an all male exotic dancing group.
I worked as a criminal psychologist for several years before moving to Los Angeles, where I swapped the suits and briefcases for ripped jeans, bandanas and an electric guitar. After a spell playing for several well known glam rock bands, I decided to try my luck in London, where I was fortunate enough to have played for a number of famous artists. I toured the world several times as a professional musician.
A few years ago I gave it all up to become a full time writer.
Mr. Carter, you are an amazing and remarkable writer. I hope you have a long life writing and doing what you do best.
I thought I was getting a soft, cringey romance with a bit of thriller, and I was like, “I did not sign up for romance and mild smut!” But then the story made a complete 180, and I never saw it coming. I was shocked and actually did a double take. I had to flip back a few pages just to make sure I was still reading the same book. Wow.
Chris Carter, you sly devil, you. I was holding my breath through the last 100 pages. I freaking loved it.
This is a slow burn—a gradual introduction to a variety of characters who ultimately play pivotal roles in a shocking and masterfully woven twist. I can’t even begin to describe how confused, stunned, and amazed I was as the story unfolded. When the backstory was revealed, I was angry and heartbroken. I kept thinking, “Please, let justice prevail. Don’t let the bad people walk away. I want a satisfying ending.”
I won’t spoil anything, but wow. Just… wow.
Chris Carter, you are the best.
I read the ebook because I couldn’t wait, but I cannot wait to get my hands on the paperback. This is one of my favorite reads of 2026—quite possibly one of the best books I’ve ever read.
This hurts because I love the Robert Hunter series by this author, but this one was just very mediocre to me. I think if you're very new to mystery/thrillers, this would be a banger for you. However, this was just very generic to me.. nothing new and kinda predictable.
The book is very Catch me If you Can coded. The premise is fun enough but I was never really gripped for some reason?
Chris Carter is notorious for telling and not showing, and I usually am okay with it in the Robert Hunter series because the plot are usually very interesting and gory😅 But here it was ... textbooky in some places, especially when explaining certain psychological aspects. I know the author has a background in psychology and criminal psychology and often uses that experience in his books, but for some reason or other, it felt way too on the nose for me in this book. (This could be a me issue, my reading tastes keep changing with every book I read.)
Overall, it wasn't straight up horrible, it was really just very mediocre to me, but I can see it working for someone else! _________________________________________________________
pre-read:
It's gonna be weird reading a book not about Robert Hunter from this author, but I'm excited for this!!
My Rating: 1⭐ Hide and Seek more like Hide and Sleep!!!
This was such a disappointment, I’ll be honest I was worried when I bought it because the last two Carter books I was a bit meh on, and I didn’t know if it was me, or maybe I had been overlooking something that I just don’t enjoy.
I kept waiting for the moment when it would become the tense psychological thriller I’d been promised. But… It never happened, it was such a cringe and boring read. So my fears were kind of validated way too early on, and I take no pleasure in being right.
The story was so childish, and I mentioned cringe but there were so many moments where I felt embarrassed for who I don’t know… me maybe for reading it. I honestly found it so hard to keep going… I kept looking at the % on my kindle and only 2 or 3 had gone by and I felt like maybe I would give up reading for the rest of my life.
I thought that Mary was one of the most one-dimensional FMC’s I’ve read in ages. Her inner monologue made me want to spew… honestly she sees a “hot dude” and goes Oh Yeah I would like to F*ck him all night long… c’mon. That feels like the kind of thing a 14 year old boy is thinking … it just never felt like a woman was thinking or doing these things… Every aspect of her personality was shallow, clichéd and painfully contrived. She is supposed to be on the run from abusive ex, but finds time to think about getting it on with every hot dude she sees…. Riiiiiight!!
ALSO, those who know me know I do not like sex scenes in general but in thrillers … GTFO of here… the over the top, gross sex in this book was truly enough for me. It added absolutely nothing to the story, and I couldn’t skip fast enough. It felt like it had been thrown in for shock value rather than serving any purpose.
Mary is an idiot of a character, and I know we find out why things weren’t quite adding up …but she’s crass, and just so stupid. You are supposed to be rooting for her, but I found myself hoping that she would get killed off. I should have known when the book blurb said no murder or gore it really meant no excitement just bore!!
Honestly, and here is me a non writer passing judgement, yes cause I am a reader who paid money for this book so, it felt amateurish and under-done. The premise had so much potential, but every interesting idea is squandered in favour of cheap shocks, implausible behaviour and twists that could be seen coming from a mile away.
When I wasn’t actually falling asleep, I was rolling my eyes so hard I thought they weren’t coming back to the front of my head.
By the end I wasn’t shocked, horrified or emotionally invested. I was simply relieved it was over. An incredibly frustrating read that massively overpromised and spectacularly underdelivered. I genuinely cannot understand the glowing reviews for this one.
I suspect many people will love this and I will be out by myself on outlier Island yet again… but I have read RomComs with less cringe and to me thats saying something.
What a ride! This one just proved that Chris Carter can work his magic even if there are no dead bodies to read from. He gave Hunter and Garcia a bit of a rest (but you can bring them back now, Chris!, pretty please!) and brought Mary to the spotlight. And shine she did!
This is a pure cat-and-mouse engineering that doesn’t give us a moment to breathe until we turn the last page. I was sleepless for a few nights, and last night it was way past 1am (my usual shut-down time is 10.30-ish) when I finished reading. No loose ends, nothing lacks explanation or logic. And pretty much nothing is exactly what it seems.
Did I see the plot twists coming? Yes. Did this take away from the experience? Absolutely not.
But if you are a fan and if you follow Chris’ work, you know that you will be fooled. That’s the whole point. And he did that masterfully this time.
Can’t wait for the next book that brings us more of Carter’s geniality! The countdown has started!

Chris Carter, You did it again!
Oh this was good . I was lucky enough to read this early due to my dad winning a signed copy and it did not disappoint.. I was worried being a standalone it wouldn’t hit the same spot but it definitely did right up to the end page .. well done Chris carter you did it again ..
Hide and Seek is a massive curveball if you're used to Chris Carter’s usual gory Robert Hunter books. Instead of the gritty police procedural stuff, this one plays out as a much slower, intimate psychological thriller. The paranoia building is spot on. Anyone looking for his typical style might find the change a bit jarring, but the pacing is so sharp that you get totally sucked into the survival story. The last hundred pages are just relentless.
The ending stretches believability a bit, but even with that, it's still a seriously entertaining ride.
This book was a hot mess. But I'll mention the too positives first: the chapters are short and easy two read, and if you can make it their, the final 100 pages are actually exciting.
See how I made three typos in the sentence above? 'Too', 'Two', 'Their'? That happened throughout this book which was filled with typos, bad grammar, and odd sentence structures. I can usually overlook a typo or two but they affected my enjoyment massively because there were so many. Which begs the question... was this book even edited?
The book is too long and very slow until the final 100 pages. At times it tried to be a legal thriller, then a cat-and-mouse chase, then a smutty romance and then a horror. I was bored and started to think of things that could happen and I ended up guessing all of the things that happened in the end bar a few minor details.
"Hide and Seek" is a very difficult book to rate since it contains a wonderfully clever story with a huge and most enjoyable twist BUT the writer did a poor job researching for this book, in my view, and his writing is fairly mediocre. There are also logical inconsistencies that are usually the province of inexperienced writers.
The story revolves around two young British woman who are skilled pickpockets, thieves and grifters. They grew up separately in an impoverished manner and when they met they saw the potential of working together. Their criminal successes grew in scope and eventually they moved to the United States, partly to increase the distance between themselves and their previous "marks."
In the US, one became aware that she was being followed and did a masterful job or evading her tail before eventually settling in San Francisco. It was in that city that she covertly arranged to meet a young billionaire who she decided would be her (and her partner's) last mark. He was the proverbial gold ring on her life's merry-go-round. He was no match for this skilled con-woman as she drew him in and eventually, they were married. Her "sister " of the streets of London, eventually joined her in California as they plotted to frame him for hideous crimes such that they could abscond with his billions. everything had gone perfectly. Then...
As indicated earlier, I found Carter's writing to be just okay although the plot was spectacular which made the reading experience pretty fulfilling. Some of the characters were very-well developed although others were very two-dimensional. The most serious problems, in my view, involved the author's apparent lack of research. For example, at one point he described a character as "better than any lawyer North or South of the Mississippi…" Since the Mississippi basically runs North and South, the statement makes no sense at all. He also seemed to be confused about the difference between criminal and civil law specifically around the matter of where an individual could and could not file a lawsuit. I don't know if this next error was his fault of that of his proofreaders but he had his chief villain talk her then husband into not taking his plane to Europe but to fly commercial. A minute later, in the same conversation, he told her that they would be flying Lufthansa and leaving at 7:45 am. Very, very sloppy.
But the plot and the twist were such fun that I can't, in good conscience, dissuade you from reading the book. I am rating it as three stars but it really deserves five stars for the plot and two for the mechanics.
Το «Κρυφτό» αξιοποιεί εξαιρετικά την ιδέα της ταυτότητας. Δεν εξετάζει μόνο τι σημαίνει να αλλάζει κανείς όνομα ή τόπο διαμονής, αλλά και κατά πόσο μπορεί πραγματικά να αποδράσει από το παρελθόν του. Η ιστορία περιστρέφεται γύρω από την έννοια της επιβίωσης, της χειραγώγησης και της εκδίκησης, ενώ παράλληλα θέτει ερωτήματα σχετικά με την εμπιστοσύνη και την ανθρώπινη αντίληψη. Πόσο εύκολα πιστεύουμε αυτό που βλέπουμε; Πόσο αντικειμενική είναι η εικόνα που σχηματίζουμε για έναν άνθρωπο; Και πόσο εύκολα μπορεί κάποιος να χρησιμοποιήσει τις προσδοκίες μας εναντίον μας;
Always a fan of Chris Carter's writing, I eagerly grabbed his latest book. While Carter has made a significant impact on me with his stellar psychological thrillers, he takes a different approach in this piece, turning it into a thriller with criminal elements and a damsel-in-distress looking to reinvent herself. Just as with Carter's other novels, nothing is as straightforward as it seems and soon the reader is completely hooked. While completely different from his past work, this was another great Chris Carter novel!
After an abusive marriage, Sam Stewart takes action and is able to get her husband arrested, tried, and sent to prison. Now, she is free from his grasp and eager to reinvent herself. However, no one thought that Nelson Stewart would be able to fulfil his last promise, to locate and handle Sam once and for all, Now, Sam chooses to change her name and disappear into the vastness of America. She meanders from one side of the country to the other, until she settles in San Francisco. Now called Mary Smith, she seeks to put down some roots. She meets Quaddra by happenstance and their connection moves from platonic to romantic before too long. Mary is ready to see if she can fall in love and perhaps marry once again. However, Mary has secrets that she will need to share with Quaddra before she can give herself to him. He has secrets too, leaving them both to wonder how to make things work so they can be blissfully happy with one another. Carter takes a strong premise and cements it into something even better!
Chris Carter has been an author I have always turned to for dark and addictive psychological thrillers. This spin outside his traditional story was just as alluring and kept me turning pages well into the night as I sought answers to my many questions. The narrative begins with Sam trying to escape her horribly abusive marriage and this keeps the reader thinking, as events meander with new and exciting layering. Before long, the story is clipping along and everything seems to be on an arc towards something happy and romantic. Shorter chapters provide the reader with a pacing that makes them feel the need to keep pushing along, helped by some stellar plot twists that turn the story on its head. The reader is in the middle of a whirlwind and Carter instils a great deal of tension with an unpredictable ending. There is so much in this story that the reader will surely find themselves in need of a breather, if only to come to terms with all they'd just seen flash before their eyes.
Characters develop easily through slow and constant advancements, keeping the reader eager to learn more. Sam's past and developing future fit together as she tries to find her footing while coming to terms with her own backstory. Quaddra has his own story and things take shape as he, too, sheds some of his secrets and connects well with Sam/Mary. His backstory works well in this piece and serves to complement all that Sam/Mary has to offer. I am used to Carter's darker and more violent work, so finding characters who are not trying to tickle the brain in this way had me thinking on a new plane. Sam/Mary and Quaddra provide something exciting, supported by a further cast that keeps the story moving swiftly to a climactic end that few likely will see coming. Carter has never lacked in his ability to develop addictive characters.
The plot points of the book develop intensely as chapters progress and truths come to light, though it is never out in the open for all to see. All this leaves an unsettling aspect for the reader to ponder, as plot twists keep everyone on edge while the story turns in ways that might not have been predicted. I loved the twists and hoped not to see the end result too soon, something that Carter has often done when he is writing. This was a thriller well worth my time and I loved being able to devour it without issue. While I am eager to see what sadistic killers might have for Robert Hunter in the future under Carter's writing, this piece was quite impressive.
Kudos, Mr. Carter, for a great standalone thriller that kept me hooked!

That was hell of a rollercoaster. At first, I thought it's a mid story about a domestic violence but every chapter threads unraveled and after third of the book I couldn't put the book down. It's not like robert hunter series, but when come to chris carter, you must dive into it.
It feels illegal to give Chris Carter anything other than a five ⭐️, however, this book was so annoying. It was a blend of two other books I’ve read and I was hoping the ending would make up for it, it didn’t.
I am sadly disappointed in this one. The big twist I saw, coming a mile away, and then the ending was also subpar. Sigh.
