Earth to Emily by Pamela Fagan Hutchins is a 2015 publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Emily is in love in her boss, Jack, but it's complicated. Emily is also in love with Betsy, a young girl she has set her heart and hopes on adopting, but it's complicated.
So, as the second book in the “Emily” series launches, we see Emily working her buns off trying to get all her ducks in a row so she can give Betsy her forever home. But, naturally life is erratic and more than one obstacle stands in her way.... things like two runaway kids, a murder, and Betsy's foster parents, who are intent on making Emily look bad. Then there are her feelings for the handsome defense attorney she works for. While things got kind of weird between them at one time, Betsy still harbors hope they can overcome the past, and work things out.
First of all I have to confess I have not gotten around to reading the first book in this series- “Heaven to Betsy”. ( I do have the book, and it's embarrassing to admit it's been lingering on my top twenty list for quite some time, but my review deadlines have been brutal, so I kept having to put it aside)
So, I have to say I highly recommend reading the first book before starting this one, but it's not absolutely necessary, since you can easily grasp the situation. I do intend to go back and get caught up, so I know all the particulars about how Emily met Betsy and learn all the specifics about Jack leading up this point.
Having said all that, I found this book to be a very fast paced read, with every element you need to make up a good story. We have mystery and suspense, romance and humor all mixed together with a few heart tugging emotional moments to top things off.
There is never a dull moment in this book with several plot lines going on at once. The characters are charming, real, funny, and at times an enigma. Jack is a guy who apparently likes to keep information close to his vest, and I never quite knew what he was thinking or how he was feeling.
Emily however, was quite forthcoming with her feelings and emotions and of course this makes her character easy for us ladies to relate to and sympathize with. She is optimistic, with a strong moral code she lives by, but underneath her quiet strength, there is a palpable yearning that broke my heart.
Naturally, any time we deal with children who are need, the emotions run high and Emily finds herself in between a rock and a hard place trying to help two teens without ruining her own chance of becoming a parent. I also felt outrage at Betsy's foster parents and the below the belt tactics they pulled on Emily who will undoubtedly make a great mom.
Then there is the romance. Again, Jack drops hints along the way, here and there, that he would like to settle some things between himself and Emily, but there are huge revelations they will have to tackle and come to terms with before they can move forward. Thankfully, we see some real progress before all is said and done.
The dialogue is crisp, sharp, poignant at times, with all the characters, even the minor ones, being well defined.
Overall, this is a fast and easy read, a solid action packed romantic suspense novel with a little something in it for everyone.
This one gets 4 stars.

Earth to Emily is book 6 in What Doesn’t Kill You Romantic mystery series by Pamela Fagan Hutchins.
Emily Bernal has fallen in love with a little girl in the Child Protective Services and has decided to try to adopt her. The first step is to get accepted as a foster parent. Child Protective Services Investigator Wallace Gray is doing all he can to help her. However, he also needs her help in finding two teen runaways- Greg and Farrah. Emily had also had a chance to meet these two teens before. She had made a connection with them so Wallace asked her to go to the Love’s outside Amarillo and try to find them and bring them in. She goes to meet them with her boss, and hopefully boyfriend, Jack Holden. She discovers Greg is helping Farrah get away from an abusive situation and they do not want her help now. She gives them her card to call her if they change their minds. They have also seen something at the Love’s that they shouldn’t have seen and are running from someone; but they won’t tell her who or why. Emily and Jack get pulled into a murder investigation by their presence at the Love’s station.
Emily has good intentions but somehow manages to get herself into impossible situations without trying. Jack seems to be there to help her get out of trouble. Can he help her now with Greg and Farrah and with adopting the little girl? Can he do it without getting crosswise with the law, after all, he is a lawyer.
It is a fun book and series to read.

Well, as promised in my review of the previous book in this series, Heaven to Betsy, I went on to read the next in the series. The main character, Emily, is still quite annoying to me -- she is extremely emotional, and lets that overwhelm her common sense. Clear communication seems difficult for her, especially to her love interest, Jack, who reciprocates with little communication himself.
The book was entertaining, but not great. My wife asked me to categorize this (and others by the same author), and I couldn't do that easily. She asked "Are they cosies?" Perhaps, but probably not terribly close to the cosies that my wife enjoys.

Great balls of fire- Earth to Emily was fun to read! The action scenes are great. I did wish that Emily had used her smarts early on concerning the phone that had been taken from her at the beginning of the book by the police. If this had happened to me, I'd be down at ATT just like that to get it rebooted and checked over. I like her relationship with the luscious Jack and how the author takes her time unfolding that story. There were some surprises in the book that I wasn't prepared for. The warehouse seemed a little too sudden. Overall it was a thoroughly enjoyable read.

I really enjoyed this book and think they just better and better. I enjoyed the Katie series but think the Emily books have just stepped it up another level. I love the familial characters putting in a appearance. Even though I had worked out the mystery it was fun getting there with Emily and the gang.
In this book Emily a paralegal is once again playing detective when two run away children ask her help after witnessing a murder, but not the help she should be providing like taking them to the police. No they want help running away,as far as she can take them so they don't become the killers next victim. Emily is torn because the teenagers need her help but so does Betsy the little girl she is trying to adopt and she doesn't want to jeopardize that. Especially as Betsy foster mum has all ready could the police on her about stalking the little girl. Jack has his own trouble trying to keep his clients out of jail and track down a thief that is stealing from home.When Emily stumbles on another body they realise that the killer is playing for keeps and it might not just be the children that are in real trouble.
I liked the narrator but I started with the Katie books so I am use to her voice for the character of Ava and even thoughTracy was good with everyone else, she didn't quite have the same island accent I have got use to.

Another great Emily mystery. I love Emily so much. She cracks me up and also frustrates me at the same time. We start this book with her trying to adopt Betsy, who she saved in the last book, and also crushing on her boss Jack. I want her happiness. I want everything to work for her. But I can't help feel frustrated at her choices. She gets herself in another murder mystery and I really didn't know if she would make it out alive. I love Emily because she is a hero that I can relate to. She doesn't say the right thing. She doesn't make the right choices. But her heart is pure. She wants to help others and sometimes she breaks the rules for the right reasons. Join Emily on another mystery. Get ready to be surprised. This story has many twists. I couldn't stop listening. This narrator brings Emily to life again. And trust me you'll want to listen/read until the last line. I can't wait for more Emily!

The 2nd book in this series, Earth to Emily, didn't disappoint. Pamela Fagan Huchins creates in depth characters and uses such descriptive language you can picture the people, what's going on, what it looks like. I found myself engrossed in this story and I think you will too. Emily's still waiting to find out if she'll be approved as Betsy's adoptive mom but in the meantime, she finds herself at odds with some law enforcement guys, becomes involved in helping two teenagers who witnessed a murder and finds herself embroiled in a kind of chaos that puts her smack dab in the middle of the action.
If that isn't enough her father reappears in her life after "deserting" the family when she was in her teens. No spoiler alerts necessary...if you want to find out how Emily deals with all that's happening...read this book!

Incredible new author for me
Wow! What a great story. I didn't know what to expect when I started this book. Too late I realized it is the 2nd of three so woo-hoo I have two more in this series. Emily, paralegal extraordinaire, doesn't just work in the office. Jack, her boss, described in such yummy detail, worries about her. The book is filled with zany characters, hair-raising danger, bad cops, good cops, devoted friends, mind enemies. As a continuation from book 1, continues Emily's hope to adopt Betsy and keeping everyone safe from the bad guys. Hutchens has a very well developed plot and characters. And the proof reading was excellent. Definitely a can't-stop-reading-until-I'm-finished book.

Emily has gone through so much and now all she wants is to adopt Betsy, see the kids Greg & Farrah safe and discover how Jack really feels about her. Is that too much to ask? I really enjoyed this mystery! It was straight forward and easy to listen to. I love how foster care and adoption are apart of this story. I think Emily is a little morally gray, which makes for a fun listen (trespassing, tampering with evidence, etc.) She is also a tough cookie, which I admire. I love the various cast of characters. They are all so unique. I loved the setting as well. It feels like the story could be concluded, but you get an extra little adventure at the end.
Tracy Hundley does a great job with distinct voices.

November 10, 2020Earth to Emily was the first book by Pamela Fagan Hutchins that I had read, and after reading it I was hooked! I instantly fell in love with the easy, imaginative and beautifully descriptive style of writing that Pamela displays in all her books.
This story has twists and turns aplenty, sometimes witty, sometimes sad with an interesting, captivating murder mystery that keeps you guessing right the way through.
I immediately purchased the sequels in the Emily series, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Earth to Emily is part of the "What doesn't kill you" series by the same author.
Give it a go, you won't be disappointed!

This time Emily helps a couple of teens she meets at a truckstop. Her life revolves around gaining custody of little Betsy, but the child's foster parents are determined to prevent this.
Who knows which cops are dirty and which are the good guys?
A great read, but can be a bit stressful if you empathize too closely with former rodeo queen Emily. She finds a great guy who even has a horse ranch. This should be her dream, but she is constantly fearing for the lives of those around her and is upset by Jack's inability to communicate. Should she marry a man who seems too hung up on his wife and kids who died when his car was blown up by a bomb meant for him?
Lots of fast-paced action!

I got this book free on Bookbub and I notice that all the other reviews are by women but I won't let that put me off. I quite liked the story and the characters although I can't see why Emily is chasing her boss as she should be off men for life after her dad and her husband even though the dad thing is sorted out later. She is dying to adopt little Betsy after her own problems and Jack is behind her in this and as the story progresses she solves a few crimes and a few peoples' problems quite effectively earning herself a hospital ward named after her, albeit indirectly and only by the police.

Funny and sad romantic mystery
Although the second book about Emily, this is a stand-alone read. To the extent that it frustrated me a little because I wanted some little kick backs and references to the first book so that I could smile along again! I do recommend you read Heaven to Betsy if you haven’t ....
Apart from that selfish moan, this is a great romantic mystery and Emily’s big heart and mad moments will keep you enthralled .
Some great dialogue and believable drama- with an ‘on topic ‘ social subject - I loved this romance/ drama.

As always Ms. Hutchins trips all the emotional buttons in this romance/mystery featuring the ever curious and helpful Emily. She again is trying to help others and solve a murder at the same time, of course putting herself in danger. Her heart gets in her way where kids are concerned, especially kids that need help. Speaking of heart, her romance with Jack continues getting more “comfortable” for both of them.

Great book - couldn’t put it down
Emily is a paralegal in Jacks office. She is passionate about everything. She gets in way over her head and goes into all situations with total disregard for her own safety. This all makes for a fast paced exciting book. She is trying to adopt Betsy and help her clients - oh and then there are a couple of kids who have left abusive foster homes but now are in I trouble and need Emily to help them out. Very fast paced. Looking forward to the next one.

EMILY IS A VERY HARD-HEADED PERSON TO THE POINT OF BEING STUPID. I REALLY DISLIKED THAT BECAUSE SHE WANTS SOMETHING SO BADLY, WHY NOT DO EVERYTHING TO MAKE IT HAPPEN. AS I BEGAN TO KNOW EMILY, I SEE WHY THE BOOK IS CALLED EARTH TO EMILY. BECAUSE SHE GOES OUT TO LEFT FIELD OR SHE'S ZERO TO SIXTY IN A MINUTE. Emily and Jack take the legal profession to new heights as they defend and protect their clients. They also move their relationship from professional to personal. The author does not disappoint with another page turning and thrilling story. The attention to detail with Ava’s conversations and word choices is just divine. Her depth and variety in characters always makes the books so much more exciting and believable. I always look forward to picking up the next in the series.

I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review. I bet the next book is going to be just as entertaining. And I am already started on Hell to Pay and if this book is as good as the first two then it will be awsome. She is one crazy lady.

If you like small dogs, large horses, quiet men, women who say ‘spit’ instead of swearing and can shoot well, good guys willing to go the extra mile to stamp out the bad guys, plus lots of action, hair raising plane rides and a lot of twists...YOU WILL LOVE THIS SERIES, THIS BOOK!!!!! Truly you cannot get a better author for this genre, she rocks it!

Lots of action as tensions rise over Emily’s attempt tp navigate the obstacles to adopting Beth, and the sudden negative attention she is receiving from the police. Laced with the humor this author is noted for, and her wonderful characters, this is definitely a great read. They are messing with the wrong girl.

I really enjoy the protagonists of Pamela Fagan Hutchins WDKY series. Emily may be my favorite. She’s impetuous and imperfect but very human. There’s plenty of action, good supporting characters and an interesting plot. An enjoyable read.

Greg and Farrah witness a murder and the killer sees them. They are afraid for their lives and ask Emily to get them out of the area. Emily wants to adopt a Mexican immigrant that lost her parents and is afraid it may affect her adoption. They tell her what happened, but not who they saw do the shooting. Two crooked cops add to the drama.

Wow!
I have read and enjoyed the Patrick Flint series. The book was available and I got it and read it in one day. I currently live in Amarillo, TX and was born and lived in New Mexico. So this series intrigued me. I was not disappointed! The twists and turns were great. I was blown away by who were the bad guys and who was the undercover.

watch out for whiplash with this book.
This is a fast-paced book. You have to keep up with the story with its many twists and turns. Once a rodeo queen, Emily is unafraid of what lies ahead. She tries to keep her head above water as she navigates all the surprises thrown at her.

This series is such a hoot -- I am having a great time listening to the Emily books, and this book is just as much fun as the last. A few issues with narration and a few head-scratchers over Emily actions, but overall, a great middle book. Full review coming soon to Hall Ways Blog.
