Monster Bae #4

Loched in Love

Rate this book
A primordial sea monster spellbound to a moat. A biology major on a working holiday.

An epic magical adventure across lands and seas no one is ready for.

For Lachlan Macbeth, it’s been three hundred years of being locked under a castle moat, isolated and alone as he waits for the day he would find his true love and break his watery curse. Being confined to Dracula’s castle by an ancient magic means it's impossible to search for love himself...until one human on an unlikely escapade falls right into his arms.

Elena Pierson just wanted to research rare sediment samples of an untouched castle moat, but instead got a one way trip into the arms of a devastatingly handsome and fiercely charming monster. When she slips and falls into the murky depths, she gets more than what she bargained for as the couple then have to set out on a road trip to get Lachlan’s loch back. After all, what's the Loch Ness monster without his loch?

Loched in Love is a no angst, super sweet cozy romance with a sea monster who just wants to worship his lady.

Loched in Love — Jacklyn Hyde (⭐️ ⭐️.5 stars)

Lachlan has been trapped in the moat of Dracula's castle for the past 300 years, but when Elena, a biology major on a working holiday, accidentally falls in his curse is broken. Now the two must work together to get back to Lachlan's home in Scotland to fully help his powers restore.

I enjoyed our glimpses of the side characters, Vlad, Connor and Frank, though would have loved more scenes with their chaos. I struggled with this book quite a bit. I found the FMC and MMC to be very flat and in such made the story itself lack in keeping my attention. I also severely struggled with the magic system...or lack there of. Some world building was necessary to make sense of the random magic that suddenly happened repeatedly throughout. This wasn't the book in the series for me. But I did love getting some of the Scottish countryside thrown in.

Liked: Side characters
Disliked: Didn't hold attention, Plot holes, Weak characters
Would I recommend? No
Who it's for: Those who want a very light mythical read.

“I’m sorry lass. I didn’t mean to frighten you, are you alright?” he asks, looking me over to see what’s wrong. Just as the dark red brows on his face scrunch down along his forehead at me, his left hand turns a deep blueish green color, complete with claws.
“What the heck is happening to you?!” I cry out.

I have been waiting for Lachlan's story and it did not disappoint. Lachlan is the biggest cinnamon roll ever.... both in size and in demeanor. He's been stuck in Vlad's moat for 300 years waiting for his fated mate to show up and free him. Elena is just trying to sneak a sample of silt for scientific testing when she literally falls into the moat.

This series has been so dang cute and fun at every turn. And this book is just as fun and adorable as the previous 3 books. In fact, the loch ness monster might be my favorite monster of them all. We get to see them travel from Romania to Scottlan via plane, train, bus, and automobile.... literally. There is a quest, a very short stint with an adversary (aka the ex that cursed him), magic, monsters, a fated mate bond that no one is fighting, and no third act breakup.

Elena takes in everything and just rolls with it. Wake up thinking I'll be arrested for trespassing and instead find myself admid non-humans. That's fine. Taken on a travel quest with the hot monster because he says he needs me. Also good. When you ask about things and are told you are his mate. Why not. Also, I really enjoyed that her response to a lot is essentially I've got 4 brothers. It's hard to shake me.

If you're looking for a cute, fun monster series then look no further.

This was the coziest book in the series with zero stakes. Lachlan is a very sweet sea monster and enjoyable when he popped up in book 2. I struggled with his and Elena’s story. Lachlan’s magic felt very thrown together. Elena is a scientist but it fell to the wayside creating a lack of depth of character. Their insta-love, I just could not handle.

Maybe I just wasn’t in the mood for this level of cozy. I normally love Jacklyn’s books but this sunk to the bottom of the loch for me.

You know how they say that the perfect bra should feel like a man with big hands is following you around gently holding your boobs? Well, that man, is Lachlan Macbeth. This monster, is sweet, sexy and swoon-worthy!!! Elena is a brilliant character, I love her nerdy but down to earth personality; and of course the cameos of the previous couples in the monster bae series. Different from the other books, this one is more like a great big hug!!! Such a feel good story. As a British lass, it was sooooo good to read a monster romance actually set in the UK!!! Almost all of them are set in America, so this was so refreshing. And Jacklyn really did her homework on British culture! I especially like the reference to our much beloved (not!) rail replacement bus services! Hahaha. This is definitely being purchased in every format and going straight onto the “re-read until you know it better than the author” list!!! Can’t tell you how much I love this series; and now so so so sooooo looking forward to the next one - especially after the juicy drop in the epilogue!!

Oh, how I've been waiting for Lachlan to get a story! The loveable sea monster haunting a castle's moat, cursed to only be freed by his one true fated mate. Not to mention, he's a total cinnamon roll and himbo beefcake. What else could you expect from the Loch Ness monster himself? Elena, a biologist who falls into Lachlan's moat, doesn't know they're fated mates. She does know it's going to be tough to leave him in Scotland when she returns home. However, Lachlan has no intention of ever letting Elena go.

I loved these two together! Lachlan is the perfect combo of strong and steady to balance out Elena's curiosity and timid nature. They really do bring out the best in each other. It was also fantastic to get new glimpses of the duos from the first three books in the series, and kick off the next story with that cliffhanger ending. I love how you get lost in this world with just a page or two, until you reach the end and it feels like ending your own adventure!

I’ve been waiting for this story and it was everything I could hope for! We get a bit of Lochlan’s backstory and the full reason he has been hanging out in Vlad’s moat for centuries. We finally get to meet the lucky lady who takes his heart and saves the day and she is awkward, nerdy, and so flipping adorable. They fit each other perfectly and made for such a funny and adventurous story!

I would love if we get like a bonus scene with more from his home because it was fascinating and magical!

This series has been such a blast, each one bringing humor, mystery, and some monster spice! Our giant Loch Ness monster may have just taken my favorite spot though!!!

Thank you for the opportunity to arc read this!

The instalove was a little too “Insta” for me. This was my least favorite of the series. I had zero interest in them as a couple or individually even though I remember loving his character in other books.

I had to force myself to finish so I wouldn’t miss any details for any upcoming books as I’m sure it’s just a fluke.

I was so excited for another book in this series, especially one with Lachlan as an MMC, but this book just kind of fell flat for me. It was good, but it didn’t hold my attention like the rest of the series has.

Loched in Love was such a cute, cozy, feel-good addition to the Monster Bae series! While book one still holds the crown for making me laugh the most, this one definitely made me swoon the most. And considering this installment features an ancient Loch Ness monster in full Highlander mode… I never really stood a chance. This series continues to be perfect for people who love equal parts feel good romance with a splash of monster loving.

This is technically an interconnected standalone, but I’d strongly recommend reading the series in order (or at least getting familiar with the previous couples) because they all play a bigger role here. Thankfully, these are quick, easy reads, so catching up is hardly a hardship.

Lachlan was absolutely the star for me and vibes as a total book husband. He's an ancient, Scottish sea dragon, who's spent centuries alone, including 300 years trapped beneath a curse in Vlad’s moat, waiting for the one person who could finally break it. So when Elena comes along and turns out to be his fated mate, watching this enormous, ancient monster completely melt for her was ridiculously adorable. He’s devoted without being controlling, obsessed without being possessive, and completely gone for her while still respecting her autonomy. Just a giant, lovesick cinnamon roll of a sea monster.

And Elena was such a great match for him. She’s confident, curious, and incredibly adaptable, with several biology degrees that make her clinical fascination with the supernatural world especially entertaining. She was already attracted to Lachlan before discovering exactly what he was, so her reaction to finding out he’s a literal sea dragon was equal parts fascination and lust. She never treated him like something to fear or be ashamed of, and after centuries of loneliness, I loved how easily she accepted him.

Their relationship is refreshingly low-stakes. No third-act breakup, no unnecessary miscommunication, no manufactured drama. Just two people learning about each other, communicating openly, falling in love, and figuring out what their new life together looks like. Even the spice fits that dynamic, with Lachlan being incredibly mindful of Elena’s comfort and his own strength and size.

I also loved getting to see more of the previous couples and watching the women form their own friendships while the ancient monsters continue their long-standing friendships. Lachlan’s friendship with Whitley was a particularly lovely little detail. Their genuine, completely platonic friendship felt so natural, and I enjoyed seeing how much he valued her perspective and friendship while waiting for his own mate.

And then there are the little moments that made this such a vibe read for me: Lachlan speaking Gaelic to Highland cows, Elena discovering she can shapeshift into a mermaid after accepting his mate bond, and the absolutely relatable audiobook-in-the-car disaster that had me laughing in shared embarrassment.

This series is marketed as monster rom-coms, and while the level of comedy definitely varies from book to book, I actually liked that this installment leaned more heavily into the romance. It was still funny and consistently lighthearted, but this was much more about watching a very lonely monster finally get his happily-ever-after, and watching him absolutely adore the woman who gave it to him.

This is such a cute, cozy, low-stakes monster romance with a giant sea dragon cinnamon roll MMC. Lachlan was precious. Perfect continuation of the series 💚

Well, I finally finished Loched in Love.

As a huge fan of the Monster Bae series, I went into this one expecting the same wonderfully unhinged, hilarious, and fresh energy. I absolutely *adore* the first three books — I’ve even reread the first one twice — so I really wanted to love this one too.

Unfortunately, it just didn’t happen for me.

It’s not even that it didn’t live up to my expectations. There was simply so much less humor and so many fewer genuinely funny moments this time around. The whole book felt more… *cute*. And honestly, “cute” is probably the best word to describe the entire thing.

Elena, especially, felt incredibly underdeveloped. We basically know that she’s plus-sized, studies bugs, and reads monster romance. And… that’s it? Oh, and she has brothers. I kept waiting to learn more about her as a person, but I never really felt like I did.

Lachlan also felt like a much flatter version of himself in this book. I don’t think we really got to see much of him as a character either, which was disappointing.

And the pacing was honestly all over the place. Things would jump from one event to another so quickly that I sometimes had no idea what was happening. They’d arrive somewhere, and then suddenly they were somewhere completely different a page later. There’d be a tiny conversation, and then somehow they were heading in the opposite direction. There were so many little stops and detours that ultimately didn’t seem to matter at all.

It genuinely hurt to give a book in the Monster Bae series only 3 stars, but I really can’t give it more than that.

I’m still very excited for Hilda’s book, though! 🥹 I’m really hoping she’ll bring back some of that weird, magical, completely unhinged Monster Bae atmosphere that made me fall in love with the series in the first place. 🤞

2.5⭐️ rounded up

Unfortunately, this installment didn't quite hit the same for me as the previous books in the Monster Bae series, which is a little disappointing because I really liked Lachlan when we met him before. I still like him though! He's a sweetie and he's a Scotsman. So he's got that going for him.

My biggest issue was the insta-love… and I do mean INSTA. Elena is a virgin who has never really been interested in any man before, and then Lachlan shows up and she's like, “Yep, that's my man.” There was minimal hesitation there. Personally, I just needed a little more buildup to really buy into their relationship.

The conflict was all pretty low-stakes. Most of what they had to work through was Lachlan's anxieties about the modern world and a brief interaction with the Lady of the Lake. It was all fine, but I think I just needed a little more depth to their story. I did enjoy their road trip, especially the sleeper train situation, and I really liked getting to see Lachlan meet Elena's family.

That said, this absolutely delivers on the “no angst, super sweet, cozy romance” promise. These two are very sweet together, and there were definitely some cute moments that worked for me. There's also some spice, and it was fine.

Overall, this one just wasn't quite It for me, but I still enjoy the world and the characters enough that I'll be keeping an eye out for the next book!

This is a fun Loch Ness monster romance. It is part of the Monster Bae series of interconnected standalones, and while it could be read on its own I think it would be best enjoyed in order, or at least after book two.

FMC Elena is a biologist on holiday in Europe, alone, and she just happens to think trespassing and exploring old water sources are fun pastimes. When she falls into the moat around Vlad’s castle, she breaks the curse on Loch Ness monster MMC Lachlan, who has been waiting a very VERY long time for his fated mate.

This book was adorable! The MCs were hurts-your-teeth sweet together. We met Lachlan before, so it was nice to finally get his backstory. I also liked getting away from Vlad’s castle for a while. They travel to Scotland via quite a few modes of transportation, so it turned into a fun little road-trip adventure while the characters got to know each other. The MCs from the previous books were still part of the story, but there was a lot of one-on-one time with this couple. We met some interesting new characters as well.

Overall, this was a delightful addition to the series, and it might be my favorite so far, although I love them all. I can’t wait to see what happens next in book five, A Bone to Pick with You.

The couple was sweet together, but the mistakes in the story didn't do them justice.
Often words were missing and two times I couldn't understand a sentence at all because the words weren't in the right order.
There were also continuity errors:
First it said in Lachlans POV that he ran from the Lady of the Lake because she wanted children from him, but he would only have children with his mate. Then later it said that it was because he wouldn't mate with her.

Lachlan said that after their first mating the mate bond would be done, but they mated and he didn't tell her that it would be forever now. And the bond wasn't formed until they had sex again in his home (he told her upfront that having sex in his home would create the mate bond).

The couple gets to something like a Bed and Breakfast near the Lady of the Lake's lake and are woken up by the hosts. The FMC opens the cabin door just an inch and looks outside and in the next sentence it says that the female host laid the breakfast basket on the kitchen counter... Without coming inside?

Also I thought that there would be a plot point of the FMC being someone who needs a plan and that she would then struggle with the MMC's seemingly flippant way and changes to their route... But even though it was hinted at heavily in the beginning it wasn't an issue.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Lachlan and Elena are quite the characters. I really enjoyed reading about this pair. I love that we as always get to see a bit of all the other characters here and there. I felt bad for Lach in the prologue, but he did ask for it and he is so funny. His point of view and the way he banters is top notch. It is never easy when it comes to curses and the way they meet is nothing simple. I enjoyed the way they came together. She literally falls into his arms, which is funny since he is in a body of water. I love the way Lachlan talks, it is such old school form yet still within the century.
This book qualifies as a monster romance. Please beware while it is cozy there are spicy scenes and there is a size difference between them, he is transformed, large and in charge.
The way they get to know each other and the chemistry between them hot pepper all the way. I want to share a quote from when Lachlan tells Elena what he is. She thinks:
“First they give you butterflies, then mental health issues.”
I laughed because that is classic way to react when the guy you crush on tells you he is a monster, LOL. This is a must read and so much to learn with them as they grow together and conquer their troubles.

I have loved the Monster Bae series since I first read Your Coffin or Mine? If @jacklyn_hyde_author writes it, I will read it.

I was foaming at the mouth for this book. We love a Loch Ness monster romance in this house. We start off at Vlad's castle and our usual cast of characters from the previous books but then Lachlan and Elena get the majority of the book to themselves and I love that they aren't overshadowed. A passing of the torch if you will. It was their time to shine.

Elena falls into the moat outside Vlad's castle that Lachlan has been cursed to for hundreds of years. It breaks the curse because...ta da! She's his true mate! She is then tasked with helping him return to Loch Ness, his home, with a few pit stops along the way. Lachlan spends that time wooing Elena and becoming acquainted with modern life including planes, trains, and automobiles.

This was such a fun reimaging of the Loch Ness monster. I loved Lachlan and Elena together, the ambience, and the different legends woven in. Selkies, mermaids, etc.

This, and the whole Monster Bae series, are such fun and spicy reads! I definitely recommend to monster romance lovers!

This one is such a joyful read! I love it!

When reading the sinopsis it immediately caught my attention because I love to read every kind of monster I can get my hands on so uniqueness? Check.

But also the way this author constructs her story is so refreshing and interesting, not just the monsters are everyone unique in their own way but the backstory is so well crafted and entrancing… it just hooked you up.

Now the characters? Lachlan has to be the most cute monster ever… and him yk being a huge marine creature but being the most softie and playful of the bunch was a contrast that I enjoyed seeing so much!

And Elena, she’s perfect, dorky, fierce and so freaking curious and intelligent… the perfect mate to match Lachlan freak and I mean his situation is rather particular so he needed someone kind and that doesn’t frighten easily and in this case Elena’s curiosity made her ease into the situation with most understanding that most of people haha but together are the most adorable couple!

Definitely my favorite in the series but I definitely recommend to check all of the books!

Her books always hit and this is no exception! I don’t read any other monster romances besides Jacklyn Hyde’s because she is just THAT good at writing them. I love that this was no angst, so sweet, and also spicy! I’ve been waiting for Lachlan’s story for awhile and it was SO worth the wait! He waited a really long time for his mate and he finally got her, and what followed was such a cute and hilarious romance. I just love the way that her storytelling makes me feel so happy and lighthearted and doesn’t take itself too seriously which is the fun part of it all.

I also loved how creatively and wonderfully the Loch Ness monster story was reimagined in this book. The Scotland setting was perfect and Lachlan seriously gave me Jamie Fraser from Outlander vibes! I LOVED this so much, more than I can say because he is special and so is Lachlan. 🥹

This is such an amazing monster romance series full of fun retellings, and it is just SO good. Definitely worth checking out if you like monster romance!

I have no idea what Jacklyn puts in these books but they are an absolute delight from the first page to the last. You find yourself reading this book with a smile on your face you weren’t even aware of and it’s an absolute joy. Loched in love is the story of Lochlan, Loch Ness monster, cursed by the Lady of the Lake to be stuck in the first body of water he touches - Vlad’s moat in Romania - until he meets his true mate, and Elena, marine biologist and absolute joy of a woman. She’s on a trip to gather materials to use in her university project when she slips and falls into the moat, and the story picks up from there. They go on a quest to go back to Loch Ness and then back to Elena’s home town, with a handful of enchanting detours and charming meetings. The absolute devotion they hold toward each other will warm your heart, and their entire story will brighten your day. I absolutely adore the Monster Bae series and cannot wait for the next book after this tumultuous last chapter!

This is why you dont sleep with crazy aka the Lady of the Lake. Exhibit A: Lachlan Macbeth. He finds himself cursed to Vlad's moat until he finds his true mate. Who knew it would only take 300 years? When Elena accidentally falls into the moat she was taking sediment samples from, she wakes up to find her expedition going to another direction thanks to the giant Scotsman.

I've been waiting for Lachlan's story. He has seen how his friends have messed up in their relationships and he knows he will not start off their relationship with any lies. Luckily for him, Elena is a reader (so she is very familiar with the monster lore) and she easily accepts his monster nature. I loved seeing how he adjusted to the new world. Also, can we talk about the Lachlan's home and how rich he is?? 😍 And Merlin?! You silly man 😂😂 I am ready for Hilda's story now 👀

Thank you Jacklyn Hyde for this ARC of Loched in Love, I was absolutely “Loched” in on these two!

These MCs just stole my heart with all the sweet, adorable cuteness and the spice was all perfection!

This sunshine meets sunshine monster bae book was the sweetest thing, is it strange to say it was cozy comfort cuteness😊 I just adored them so much!

The way Elena fell (literally) for Lachlan, I loved the honesty between these two, he never tried to trick her or convince her to stay and be his mate, he loved her enough to put all his cards on the table. These two just worked and it was beautiful and happy and swoony🥹

I feel like after reading all the monster smut that I do I would absolutely be Elaine in this situation and just roll with all the punches of learning about monsters and that I have a mate. Especially if he was a giant red headed sea monster.

I feel like that says a lot about me that I don’t feel like digging into 😋

Lachlan and Elaine are sweet babes who you just want to see happy and you will. This book is cotton candy soaked in syrup. Lachlan is the highland puppy of all our dreams WITH all the anxiety social and otherwise haha

This was a very cute book to add the collection and will make you SO excited to read the next one!! Whenever that will be!!

I swear these just keep getting better and better. Who would've thought that little old Nessie would steal the top spot in my heart from this series. He is so freaking sweet and devoted. She is so innocent, nerdy, and awkward. They are like a toothache from eating too much sugar but you are so happy you did.

Omg! The size difference came into play 🫠

Loved getting to see the past characters but enjoyed that their little trip gave them some much needed alone time 🥰 We got to meet some new characters that hopefully play a part in later books 🤭

This was 100000% cozy monster romance, just achingly sweet and adorable. Who knew you could break a several centuries long curse by falling into a moat outside a vampire's castle?? Only a mate could break magic like that. Elena falls into Vlad's moat and right into Lachlan's waiting arms. I loved learning Lachlan's backstory and meeting his extended family. Elena just wanted to go do some research on her favorite beetles and got that and so much more!

I received this as an ARC. All thoughts are my own

This book is exactly the type of story I would want for this couple! I absolutely adore Lachlan and Elena!
It is extremely well written and flows well together. Allowing for the story to run smoothly sort of speak. The smut is well written and helps to support the plot.
I love seeing the cast of characters make appearances and form their own family along the way.

Loched in Love is the fourth book in the series, and I have been waiting forever for the Loch Ness monster to find his mate. I absolutely love this series. The characters genuinely feel like a family, and with each new book, that family gets just a little bit bigger, which makes me love this world even more. The story was fun, romantic read I was hoping for, and of course, let’s not forget I’m a sucker for a redhead!

I have been pestering Jacklyn nonstop for this story since we first met Lachlan and it did not disappoint. Sweet, cozy, and with minimal angst (and none between the main characters), this is a perfect end of summer monster romance. Throw in appearances from our other Monster Bae friends and a teaser of what is to come, and this was an enjoyable romp.

The bestest, warmest hug that makes you feel "home" is the best way I can describe this book. If you are expecting strife, miscommunication, conflict...this is not any of that.
This book is an attestation to the truest of love and affection of two people toward each other.
As soon as Lachlan was introduced, we just KNEW he was going to be a marshmallow of epic proportions. He did not disappoint.
Loved it so much.
Nope no spoilers here.

"Elena is the oceans of my heart; she's the tides, the salty mist of air on the breeze, my homeland"

This book 😍 Lachlan is someone who has spent centuries locked away in a most, and is irrevocably lonely. Elena is a scientist who has never been interested in anyone else. They meet in and it is literally the sweetest story. They heal each other in ways that are obvious and others that are not. This was fabulous, as all others in are in this series, and easily 5 ✨ for me.
