September 11, 2026 I’ve completed reading this book and found it enjoyable and entertaining. The book takes the reader on a journey into the world of the afterlife. As the title implies it’s a journey of facts, suppositions and comic aspects of the afterlife. It’s an enjoyable book to sit and relax reading it about the exploits of Azrael (the Angelof death).

A fascinating and very different take on angels, told from the perspective of the Angel of Death. I particularly enjoyed the dark humour, which had me laughing throughout.
It was also informative, offering a fresh viewpoint on the beginning of the Old Testament, the rise of Lilith and what she represented, and the Archangels, including Lucifer.
An interesting and enjoyable read, and if there is a follow-up, I’ll definitely be reading it!

R.C. Vielee’s Inside Heaven Inc.: Confessions of Azrael is a comic fantasy built around a clever premise: the Angel of Death is an overworked celestial employee who never wanted the job. Azrael narrates his own history, beginning with the earliest generations of humanity and explaining how Abel’s murder unexpectedly turned an Ordinary Angel into the being responsible for collecting human souls. From there, Vielee imagines Heaven not only as a divine realm but as a sprawling organization complete with management structures, assignments, procedures, internal politics, and an employee who’s increasingly dissatisfied with his position. Azrael establishes the novel’s voice immediately when he tells the reader, “Most just call me the Angel of Death. You’re wondering if the Angel of Death is real. I am.” That combination of supernatural authority and conversational irreverence defines much of the book.
The novel draws broadly from biblical narratives, apocryphal traditions, mythology, and familiar religious figures, then reshapes them through Azrael’s distinctly modern perspective. Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Lilith, Lucifer, Michael, Samael, Azazel, the Grigori, and the Nephilim all become participants in a celestial history that feels part theological satire, part workplace comedy, and part fantasy adventure. Vielee gives the world an unusually large scope, moving from Eden and the first human death to Hell, Purgatory, reincarnation, angelic bureaucracy, and the violent campaign against the fallen Grigori. The conceit of Heaven Inc. is especially effective because it provides a consistent framework for the mythology. Divine events become projects, assignments, administrative decisions, and occasionally serious organizational failures. Beneath the comedy, however, the supernatural machinery has consequences, particularly for Azrael, whose repeated contact with suffering and damnation gradually changes the way he understands his work and himself.
Azrael’s development supplies the novel with its emotional structure. At first, he treats his problems largely as the result of an assignment he never chose, an inflexible supervisor, and a system that refuses to let him leave. His resentment makes Lucifer’s temptations increasingly dangerous, while his relationship with Samael gives that internal struggle a personal dimension. As the story progresses, Azrael is forced to confront the uncomfortable distinction between circumstances imposed upon him and choices that remain his own. That same concern with responsibility shapes his treatment of Samael near the conclusion, when judgment is tempered by friendship, penance, and the possibility of becoming better. The book ultimately describes its own purpose succinctly: “This story is one of redemption.” The statement fits the novel because redemption here depends on accountability.
What makes Inside Heaven Inc. distinctive is the way Vielee sustains an informal, occasionally profane narrator across material that ranges from creation mythology to moral reflection. Azrael can be sarcastic, impatient, compassionate, petty, frightened, and unexpectedly tender, which keeps an immortal figure grounded in recognizable emotions. The humor carries much of the reading experience, but the novel’s lasting interest comes from the questions beneath it: what free will requires, how resentment can distort judgment, whether punishment allows room for mercy, and what responsibility means when circumstances genuinely are unfair. As a Christian, I’m always hesitant to read fictional stories about spiritual concepts because you never know what to expect from someone’s imaginative interpretation. I was pleasantly rewarded with the story of Inside Heaven Inc. R.C. Vielee creatively expanded on biblical truths by offering the perspective of an angel who works for Heaven. The memoir-style storytelling gives a fun first-person insight to Azrael’s ascension from ordinary angel to Angel of Death and beyond.
The story features epic angelic battles, like that of heavenly angels battling the Nephilim (giants of woe from the Old Testament). And in the climactic end-all fight, Azrael storms the gates of Hell to challenge Lucifer himself. Azrael’s will is challenged by the fallen angel Lilith, and the allegiance of his boss, Archangel Michael, is uncertain at times.
Personally, my favorite aspect of the book was the representation of Lucifer. He was depicted as the deceiver he is. I especially loved how Vielee used the original version of the angel Lucifer was (Angel of Light) as a manifesto in the chapter “An Insidious Grace” to trick Azrael before allowing the true form of the Devil to rip its way to the forefront. I love the biblical representation of Lucifer’s identity!
Vielee also offers expanded perspectives on the creation of the world, the creation of Man, the Theory of Evolution, Purgatory, and stories from the Old Testament. Reading the insight of an angel who was present to witness all of time before us was neat! Note: If you’re seeking spiritual truth, I recommend the Bible (the Word of God) alone as the source. Remember, “fiction” means invented by the imagination.
Inside Heaven Inc. was an introspective journey of divine will and obedience. Azrael’s fun, free-flowing voice made the story read like he was merely conversing with me as the reader, and I found myself rooting for him the whole way through!
The ending left me with a lasting question: Would I have made the same decision regarding the angel Samael’s fate? Would you?

Review of an ARC from NetGalley.
Inside Heaven Inc.: Confessions of Azrael by Robert Vielee tell the reimagined story of the angel of death navigating the early creation of the earth from the time of Adam and Eve and j camera an adventure to rescue a fallen angel from Lucifer.
The narrative is written in a contemporary style with frequent fourth wall breaks to explain something to the reader - initially this style is interesting but as the novel progresses this becomes harder to stay engaged with.
The plot was initially interesting, however as it developed the characters became less likeable and the narrative less engaging.
The fourth wall breaks work in the early chapters to establish the protagonists approach to their “confessions” but later in the plot this seems forded and interrupts the flow of the story.
3 stars for an interesting premise but the execution left something to be desired.

I love this book! It has it all: dark, funny; intense, and tranquil. Azrael is such an endearing character, with all his imperfections, snarky humor, and profound insights. I sympathized with the Angel of Death.
The author has an in-depth knowledge of most, if not all, beliefs about the higher power and the early days of man. That shines though in his expertly created, believable scenarios in the supernatural world.
This book appeals to a wide range of interests. You can take the story at face value, or you can find it deeply thought-provoking. It will have everyone talking! A book club must!h

This is an extremely entertaining read with compelling characters and an intriguing, thought-provoking storyline. The main character's struggles with questions of conscience and morality are eminently relatable. The greatest challenge when reading this book is to decide whether to dive in and read it straight through with a sleepless night, or to read it slowly and savor the well-developed intricacies of plot and character. An excellent book!
