would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this lovely christmassy book
love actually comes to mind with many of the references to the film in this book but its also has its own theme going on....
clara arrives in hollythorpe a village in the cotswolds after finding her fiance with another woman so she had fled to her godmother with the hopes of mending her bruised heart....
the village was at the start of its christmas celebrations and she had walked into a meeting about who would play mrs christmas.... as the current one had jury service
have to say this story is brilliant if you love christmas...with the antics of the elves and who doesnt love elf on the shelf antics a dog that has a love of expensive material plus a will they or wont they storyline its the best ahhhh factor you need for christmas with loads of chocolate thrown in the mix and the characters are to die for... love the play on the names

Clara has been in Hollythorpe for approximately five minutes when a car sprays her with slush and the driver turns out to be a gorgeous single dad with enough relationship trauma to power the village Christmas lights. Which honestly feels about right, because twenty-four hours earlier she had a fiancé, a diamond ring, and an entire future planned with Hudson. Now the engagement is toast, Hudson has revealed himself to be the kind of man who wanted a wife-shaped accessory with agreeable opinions, and Clara has fled to her godmother Eleanor’s house in the Cotswolds to figure out how the hell her life went from wedding planning to getting baptized by dirty snow. And she has barely unpacked before Christmas starts assigning her new problems.
Her biggest new problem is Liam, obviously. Liam is handsome, guarded, raising his son, and has basically responded to being spectacularly betrayed by his ex-wife by closing the emotional shop indefinitely. Clara, meanwhile, has JUST escaped Hudson and would also like to unsubscribe from romance for the foreseeable future. These are two people standing ten feet apart going, “Absolutely not,” while everyone around them can clearly see where this is headed. Hollythorpe could probably save everyone some time by issuing them a joint Christmas card.
Then the village’s Mrs Christmas gets sick, Clara gets recruited as the replacement, and guess who is already Mr Christmas? LIAM. Of course he is. Because apparently Hollythorpe doesn’t believe in letting adults process heartbreak privately when it could instead put them in festive costumes and make them work a winter fair together. Clara and Liam keep trying to behave like two completely normal people who definitely aren’t attracted to each other, except neither one is particularly convincing and the entire village has eyes.
Meanwhile, there are approximately seventeen other emotional situations happening because Hollythorpe treats boundaries as more of a loose suggestion. Eleanor has her own history with Ezra, Doris and Joe have their thing, twins Danny and Sam are dealing with girl drama, and Liam has unfinished business with Graham after the betrayal that blew up his marriage.
Then we have Figgy the dog and Bugs, a former magician’s rabbit, because apparently even the animals in this town arrive with backstories. The whole thing has very intentional Love Actually energy, where everyone is carrying around a different romantic emergency and Christmas just keeps happening at them.
Clara was the part that really got me, though. She has spent so much of her life trying to become whatever version of herself will make somebody else happy. Hudson wanted her compliant. Her mother has spent years making her question herself. Clara has gotten so good at accommodating everybody else that she barely seems to notice how little room she has left in her own life. Eleanor simply liking her as she is feels almost revolutionary, and watching Clara slowly realize she does not need to keep auditioning for love hit harder than I expected between Santa costumes and rogue rabbits.
And Liam, my guy, I understand why your walls are up, but we are going to need a door somewhere in this fortress. His ex-wife didn’t just leave him. She cheated on him with someone close to him and walked away from Liam and their son, so of course he sees romantic vulnerability approaching and immediately starts mentally boarding up the windows.
Then she comes back into town with demands because apparently Christmas wasn’t already doing enough. Watching Liam try to separate what Clara is actually doing from what someone else did to him was messy in a way I liked. Sometimes the new person isn’t responsible for the old person’s crimes, sir. Please update your records accordingly.
There are definitely moments where Hollythorpe resolves things with an efficiency that made me suspicious. Some of these people deserved another twenty pages of consequences. I wanted at least one confrontation to require somebody to dramatically remove a Christmas hat before speaking. But I was also completely willing to roll with it because I liked Clara finding her spine, Liam cautiously reopening the emotional shop, and this deeply nosy little community deciding that both of them were family before either had finished objecting.
Christmas, Actually gave me exactly the kind of festive nonsense I want when I pick up a Christmas romance. Betrayal. A hot single dad. Two people insisting they are unavailable while being extremely available. Exes returning to cause problems nobody ordered. A village winter fair. Found family. Santa-based forced proximity. A dog. A former magician’s rabbit.
Four stars from me. Hollythorpe can absolutely invite me for Christmas, but I will not be volunteering for anything because I have seen what happens when this village needs someone to fill in.

Donna Ashcroft is the Queen of Christmas romance stories! I think the very first book of hers I read was a beautiful Christmas story and I loved it so much it has become a tradition for me to read one or two of hers every year to capture the Christmas spirit! Besides great festive topics and important relationship elements, Donna always includes some lovely animals that add extra fun and drama to the story. This time it is adorable Figgy the dog and Bugs a former magician’s rabbit!
Christmas, Actually has a wonderful Mr and Mrs Christmas storyline and the setting is the Cotswolds fictional village of Hollythorpe (with a hint of Christmas decoration in the name!). The two main characters Liam and Clara (who play these roles) provide their perspectives on events and feelings. They each have major relationship problems with previous partners. Both have been betrayed but must recover from their wounds in order to move forward. Although healing and freedom will come with time, the past reappears with its challenges and temptations— forcing them to look at their habits and see the truth that is visible to others. They each have to sort through the wreckage of their past romantic relationships in order to rise from the ashes to live and love again.
Clara’s engagement to an attractive businessman has gone very wrong. Hudson betrays and lies to her about what he has done and this is a wake-up call that sends her in a new direction. He is a selfish, dominating person who only wants a ‘yes’ woman to attend to his needs and desires. He has little respect for Clara’s wishes and interests. This is a topic I have seen a fair bit lately in stories and each time it is heart breaking because this sort of thing happens in real life. This treatment causes women like Clara to feel inadequate. She is always trying to please Hudson and her mother (and loses herself in the process). So when she meets Liam after escaping to the Cotswolds to visit her godmother who does appreciate and accept her for who she is, her world slowly begins to change. But, of course, not without a number of hiccups.
Liam has been betrayed by his wife who now is his ex-wife since they got divorced. She left him and their son without warning, after she cheated on him with someone dear to him. It is obvious Liam is a caring father. With a bit of help from friends, he manages to look after his son and work. When he meets lovely Clara, his heart begins to spark again. Which surprises him but can he trust in a relationship again? Then his ex-wife arrives back into town with demands that set the cat among the pigeons! Has she changed or is she the same person as before?
Christmas, Actually is inspired by the movie Love Actually (as noted by the author in her letter to readers). It is a favourite flick of hers and she wanted the same ‘festive feel’ in her novel. Well, she certainly has achieved that! The movie Love, Actually follows a number of festive love stories and so does this novel as we see not only Clara and Liam but also Ezra and Eleanor, Doris and Joe, the Holly couple, and other challenging relationships like twins Danny and Sam fighting over girls, as well as Liam and Graham who are split by a betrayal. And Clara’s relationship with her mother is highlighted and needs some fixing, too. But one theme that rings through both novel and movie besides ‘love actually is all around’ is the importance of self-acceptance and to be with people who are happy with who you are. The most quoted phrase from the movie is ‘To me, you are perfect.’ And I see this over and over again in Christmas, Actually— particularly voiced by godmother Eleanor and Liam to Clara who has been put down a lot by her mother and her ex-fiance.
So both the novel and movie concentrate on the importance of relationships (and different kinds—even love for our pets!). And learning to love despite the pain and other challenges we may face. It is important to remember we are not alone as there are communities and/or family members who will be there to offer the support we need. We might have to look around and yes, sometimes even move. But love abounds in many unexpected places. And this novel shines with those opportunities to remind us and to be encouraged to be ourselves.
Christmas, Actually provides a strong message of hope, healing and confidence to be enjoyed any time of the year. And yes, Christmas miracles really do happen. And as Clara learns “…sometimes you get to follow your sad endings with a new start.” Get a copy of this festive feel-good beautiful story that is brimming with warmth, wonder and love. It is a true mistletoe kiss for the heart! 5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A Christmas smasher, even before the lobster appeared
Love Actually is my favourite film, so you'd think I'd have twigged immediately what was happening here. The book is called Christmas, Actually, for goodness' sake. It even opens at an airport with people hugging and kissing. Did I immediately start looking for references? Nope. Apparently I needed a lobster.
And then someone mentioned having played a lobster in a school play.
That was it. The Christmas lights came on.
From that moment, I was happily spotting Love Actually Easter eggs left, right and centre. Martine. Liam. Christmas Is All Around. Cheating partners and complicated relationships. School crushes. A man watching the woman he loves marry his best friend. Written declarations of love. "To me, you are perfect." An airport dash. A public kiss. Some of the references are subtle little winks and others are about as subtle as a lobster turning up at the birth of Jesus. I absolutely loved finding them.
But what really matters is that Christmas, Actually would still have been a beautiful story without any of that.
This is a book full of relationships in all their different forms. Romantic relationships that work and ones that don't. Mothers and daughters. Godmothers and goddaughters. Parents and children. Friendships, families and a whole community of people whose lives overlap. Hollythorpe felt warm, festive and wonderfully welcoming, and Liam and Martine were such lovable protagonists that I was completely invested in them.
The Love Actually inspiration simply added another layer of joy for me. There were even moments when I found myself thinking, "You missed one!" There were several iconic scenes and storylines that could have supplied even more little references. But am I deducting a star because nobody painstakingly gift-wrapped something while an increasingly desperate person waited? Absolutely not.
I read the entire ebook in less than 24 hours, which probably says everything that needs saying. It was funny, romantic, warm and full of community, and once I discovered the Easter-egg hunt I was having an absolute ball.
This is definitely one I'd reread, and next time I'll be watching for the references from page one.

A sweet and fun story to get me in the holiday mood. Set in cozy Hollybrooke the story revolves around Liam and Clara who are playing Mr. and Mrs. Christmas in the holiday celebration. The celebration and the residents are delightfully festive and quirky. Full of community and the involvement, support, and meddling that are the hallmark of cozy small towns I found myself smiling at the antics.
Mr. and Mrs. Christmas each have insecurities and baggage from their past that influence their thoughts and behaviors. As they spend time together they start to let the other get close but will the baggage from the past keep them from their future?
Clara has come to Hollybrooke to figure out her next steps after discovering her fiance and business partner kissing her only friend. She has always been told she is not good enough and needs to shrink herself and comply in order to have a life. In Hollybrooke she starts to rediscover herself, finally standing up for herself and finding the courage to say what she feels. But is it too much? Will she find love and happiness when she is herself?
Liam is a single dad and is busy with his business, son, and dog Figgy. He is afraid to let anyone in but the more time he spends with Clara the more time he wants to spend with her. But will the return of his ex-wife Mia change things?
I really enjoyed this story and hope that there are more stories in Hollybooke. Add this story to your Holiday tbr if you enjoy holiday romances ful of Christmas festivals and quirky communities.

In Hollybrooke she starts to rediscover herself, finally standing up for herself and finding the courage to say what she feels. But is it too much? Will she find love and happiness when she is herself?
Liam is a single dad and is busy with his business, son, and dog Figgy. He is afraid to let anyone in but the more time he spends with Clara the more time he wants to spend with her. But will the return of his ex-wife Mia change things?
I really enjoyed this story and hope that there are more stories in Hollybooke. Add this story to your Holiday tbr if you enjoy holiday romances ful of Christmas festivals and quirky communities.

The getaway to the Cotswolds was supposed to be the interlude before her new beginning, one which no longer contains Hudson the Turd!
Liam is a pro at being betrayed, his ex-wife did a number on his heart and now he's determined to be the best dad he can. No romance or relationships for him. Yeah, that's not going to last long, not when just about the entire village can see sparks between these two.
Playing the jolly, happy Mr and Mrs Claus forces them together. But they are not the only story happening in the village; there is love rekindled, secret assignations, and the twins Danny and Sam are having their own dramarama. But it's not all doom and gloom, there is also the adorable Figgy and Bugs to melt hearts all over the place and steal every scene they're in!
I loved watching Clara evolve from a people pleasing, minimising herself woman to someone who wasn't afraid to take up space, make demands and be seen. Liam was a bit of a harder nut to crack. Those walls were high and well-built! Watching him falter and take some of his frustrations with his ex out on Clara was not cool! In the end he finally mellowed a bit and I started to see beyond that stoic façade.
Small town romance is just such a perfect fit with festive fiction! Love in all varieties, shapes and forms. Nosy but well-intentioned neighbours, and all matter of Christmas frivolities.

Once again, Donna Ashcroft absolutely DELIVERS with yet another festive and fun holiday romance. This one would make a perfect Hallmark Christmas movie! (of course, I think I say that about all of her holiday books, so…)
I’ve mentioned before that I’m not a huge fan of romance – I’m very picky about what I’ll read in the genre and even more so about what I’ll recommend. I don’t like them too saccharine or too mushy gooey gag me over-the-top romantic. I’m too old and I’ve been married too long for that. Donna‘s books always seem to be just the right mix of cozy romance, real life obstacles, and of course, are always set somewhere I’d love to live myself.
Christmas, Actually lived up to all of that and more. I do have to admit, initially I wasn’t too sure I was going to like Martine, the main female character – I was disappointed she was actually considering staying with her fiancé, and she seemed a bit weak. Not quite a doormat, but I had concerns. I’m glad I kept an open mind because she definitely won me over and I was half in love with Liam from the first chapter.
Full of Donna‘s trademark wonderful characters as well as a nod to one of my favorite Christmas movies – this is perfection and going straight into my stack of fave holiday reads!

This is a lovely Christmas romance, and definitely will get you in the spirit and ready for some festive lights and snow! Clara has walked away from her too perfect (but also a loser) fiance after catching him with someone else, and has nowhere to go, since they live together and he's her boss. So she sets out across the Atlantic to her godmother's house in England, looking for a break to lick her wounds.
While waiting outside Eleanor's shop, she's sprayed with mud by a handsome man's truck, and her day just keeps getting worse. She agrees to play as Mrs. Christmas for the upcoming holidays in town (a town that takes Christmas VERY seriously by the way!), only to discover that the handsome Liam is her "husband."
They're both closed off to love and relationships, but can a Christmas miracle heal their hearts?
While this book was a bit expected, there are plenty of things that make this story special. Figgy's obsession with fabrics, the bunny escape artist, and mischievous elves all make this story a wonderful holiday read!

I was really excited to receive this ARC because Christmas books are some of my favorite seasonal reads. With the release coming up in just a few days, I wanted to read the book now so I could have my review ready in time, but after starting it I’ve realized that September is too early for me to properly enjoy a Christmas story. So much of what I love about seasonal reading is the atmosphere and the experience surrounding it, and I know I’m not going to get the same enjoyment from a Christmas book now that I would in November. Because of that, I’ve decided to put this one aside temporarily and return to it when I’m actually in the mood for Christmas. I’m leaving a four star review for the moment because this decision has nothing to do with the quality of the book, and I don’t want to lower its rating simply because the timing isn’t right for me.

Keep in mind, that was yesterday. That was before she found out what he was really like and before he was gone.
A new start in the Cotswold's and a quaint little village of Hollythorpe gives her a feeling of hope back.
Staying with Aunt Elanor is just the perfect place to be. she's so kind and encouraging.
The Christmas spirit is hitting and a chance meeting with gorgeous Liam kicks her interest in being in this festively decorated small town another notch.
Warm, welcoming, festively decorated with softly falling snow will kick your Christmas reading off the right way in this charming seasonal read.
Relationships take center stage here, we see several romances bloom and kind and supportive friends and family there for each other as well.

I was worried about starting a Christmas book at the end of August in 80 degree weather but I had no reason to. This book still got me into a holiday mood and I really enjoyed it! I felt as though I was in a Hallmark movie and could see this being turned into one.
I loved the characters and story between Clara and Liam (or should I say Mr and Mrs Christmas). They had such a sweet relationship and especially loved the airport scene near the end.
I also liked Eleanor and how caring and supportive of Clara she was. Everyone needs an Eleanor in their life.
The characters I did not like were Hudson (the ex fiance) and Clara’s mother (I honestly forget her name I disliked her so much). It broke my heart how insensitive her mother was. I got annoyed by Hudson’s controlling behavior and overall personality.
I would 100% recommend this to readers looking for a fun Christmas romance story. I will definitely be reading more from Donna Ashcroft.

Another gorgeous Donna Ashcroft book. This time I had the pleasure of reading a cosy, festive ARC set in a Christmassy Cotswolds village. 🎄✨
This one pulled me in from the very first chapters. I quickly found myself rooting for the characters and getting completely swept up in the story. There’s just something about a small, idyllic village at Christmas that I absolutely love, and this book really gave me that feeling. It honestly made me want to pack a bag and go stay somewhere like this myself!
I really enjoyed watching the story unfold and getting to know the characters. It had that lovely mix of warmth, romance and Christmas magic that made it such an enjoyable read. I love Donna Ashcroft’s books because she does such an amazing job of making you feel as though you are right there in the story with the characters. Liam and Mia were a wonderful couple, and it was fun watching them both overcome the hurt of past failed relationships and find their way to each other.
As always, Ashcroft included a delightful group of secondary characters who really helped bring the story to life and made me even more invested in the small town and its people.
This one also added a little touch of mystery/drama, which I enjoyed, although I felt those parts were wrapped up a little too easily in a nice neat bow. I was expecting at least a little more confrontation or fallout before everything was resolved.
Overall, this was a beautiful, feel-good Christmas story that I thoroughly enjoyed

In a charming Cotswold village, she throws herself into the local festivities and falls for the charm of Mr Christmas himself too..but can they both put their pasta behind them to appreciate what they've got now?
This is a cosy read; it's easy going and enjoyable. The characters are largely likeable and the setting is very picturesque. I found the Christmas/Winter themed names a little twe and that did detract slightly from the story as it felt like a forced yet irrelevant detail. If you enjoy romcom books, you'll like this - there's nothing groundbreaking about it but it is a nice one for the festive season. The secondary characters are fun and likeable too - I wonder if there'll be spin offs!

OMG, I absolutely loved this book Christmas, Actually! is the ultimate cosy, feel-good read that completely swept me away and left me wanting the fire on, a glass of mulled wine and to eat chocolate brownies whilst I read. Donna Ashcroft has created such a magical, warm atmosphere that the moment I finished the book, I instantly wanted to pack my bags and move straight to Hollythorpe. Clara is such a wonderful main character, and I loved watching her heal and find herself again. Her godmother Eleanor, so wise and caring and Liam, everything you want in a holiday romance hero-watching his icy exterior melt as he works with Clara together as Mr & Mrs Christmas was just perfect.
If you love Christmas, you will absolutely love this book-it feels just like a warm mug of hot chocolate. A wonderful, festive 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟second chance romance.

Ahh, I feel like I have just reached the end of a beautiful Hallmark Story. Donna truly is Mrs Hallmark Story Writer in the making.

Clara has just escaped New York to settle with her Godmother Eleanor Kringle who happens to be a huge lover of all things Christmas. Her fiancé had been up to no good, so where else better could she go?

Christmas Actually is an absolute delight. It included everything I love about Christmas books, and I absolutely loved it. Set in one of my favourite locations, the Cotswolds, Christmas Actually follows Clara and Liam as they take on the roles of Mr & Mrs Christmas for Hollythorpe’s annual celebrations.
When we first meet Clara, she is reeling from a devastating break-up with her former fiancé and seeking comfort from her Godmother, Aunt Eleanor. I really felt for her and instinctively wanted her to find the kindness that she craved. No spoilers, but I immediately disliked her ex as soon as the details of their breakup were revealed.
The more I learned about Aunt Eleanor, the more I loved her. I don’t include spoilers, so you’ll have to read this gorgeous book to discover why, but you’ll be glad you did.
Liam was the perfect Beta male. He had the strength and charisma to make my knees wobble, but was kind and sensitive. He had his own backstory, which was gradually revealed. Once his story came to light, I just knew they would be perfect together. However, not all love stories have easy access to a happy ending.
I wish that Hollythorpe wasn’t fictional, as I would love to visit. An entire village getting into the Christmas spirit and celebrating together sounded magical. Of course, the story has an eclectic mix of characters, but each one adds to it. Even the grumpy bookshop owner.
This gorgeous book is warm, funny, and definitely romantic. The characters are perfectly developed, and the sense of place is wonderful. Add it to your list for this Christmas; you won’t regret it.

When we first meet Clara, she is reeling from a devastating break-up with her former fiancé and seeking comfort from her Godmother, Aunt Eleanor. I really felt for her and instinctively wanted her to find the kindness that she craved. No spoilers, but I immediately disliked her ex as soon as the details of their breakup were revealed.
The more I learned about Aunt Eleanor, the more I loved her. I don’t include spoilers, so you’ll have to read this gorgeous book to discover why, but you’ll be glad you did.
Liam was the perfect Beta male. He had the strength and charisma to make my knees wobble, but was kind and sensitive. He had his own backstory, which was gradually revealed. Once his story came to light, I just knew they would be perfect together. However, not all love stories have easy access to a happy ending.

No one does heartbreak mixed with humor so well together in one story as Donna Ashcroft. Christmas, Actually is another example of that very thing being both a romance comedy and a story of recovering from betrayal. Clara is still in shock over her betrayal while Liam has built high walls so that he never suffers from it again. A story full of Christmas in Hollythorpe where the past comes back to haunt these two. Still it is an awakening for them which leads to personal growth, healing and opening themselves up to the love they deserve. As much an uplifting story of moving forward as it is a wonderful Christmas story.

This book like it’s namesake proves that, indeed love is all around us. It’s festive, fun, full of friendships, food and frivolity. It’s a lovely book to snuggle up with. The food is gorgeous, the snow is falling and it’s just lush.
I loved Liam and his life as a single Dad navigating his time with Charlie his son and his dog who loves the finer fabric in life. When he bumps into Clara fresh off the plane and fresh out of a break up from her fiancé in New York you know what’s going to happen, but nevertheless the ride you go along with the character’s is always such fun!

This was such a lovely read, read in one sitting, couldn’t get enough. This is like a Hallmark movie in a book. Clara has had enough of her partner in New York so decides to jump on a plane to England to visit her godmother. It’s Christmas time and everyone needs a Mr & Mrs Christmas, jumps in Liam and Clara to the rescue. Loved the characters in this book expect Clara mother, she’s was a witch. It’s like a giant hug in a book, fantastic 5 star easy festive read. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for a copy.

This book was just like a Hallmark movie. Cozy, romantic, funny, and full of lovable characters. I instantly fell in love with the town. Liam was a wonderful character full of so much emotion and I was constantly rooting for him and Clara.
