Prisoner of Magnolia

The elven realm of Gaudelir hasn’t known war for a century since a fire spirit ripped the continent in two. But the balance of power changes the day of Princess Elayah’s elemental ceremony.

Elayah Lorethain has never had any aptitude for magic. When she is expected to venture into her subconscious to retrieve her elemental power, she is convinced she will fail. But when she returns, her power isn’t the only thing she brings back.

A darkness follows her, filling her mind with vicious whispers and trying to claw its way out. Elayah is weak. Naive. She isn't ready to rule and that's why her parents are still hiding things from her in the archive beneath the palace. And with tensions brewing between her and her childhood best friend and guard—Tayrem—she’s torn between duty and love.

When the enemy kingdom invades, and Tayrem’s life is on the line, there is only one way she can save him. Forced to marry the enemy king, Elayah has to face the darkness within herself, the secrets of her kingdom, and the desires of her heart that she's been pushing down for decades.

WARNINGS:
Prepare yourself. Take napkins, a stress ball, a furry friend and popcorn. Yes, you may think it is an odd combination, but you'll thank me later for the suggestion.
This is a MAGNIFICENTLY written first book, I'm wholly impressed and in love with the world and the characters that the author created. They breathe through the pages, making you lose hours of sleep (which we all know is a sign of a good book).
The characters... they're going to wrench out all the colours of emotions from your guts. They are the driving force of this book, as they should be, but it's done so well you'll be left in awe.
I'm so happy I encountered it and I can't wait to see what's next.

What can I say about this book except I really really need book 2 now!!!! The world building was fabulous mapping out all the different parts and their roles. Loved the descriptions of each of the kingdoms very vivid and made it very easy to picture. The characters were so realistic even if they weren’t human the breadth of emotions and actions made them so relatable and powerful.

Oh goodness!

What a great start to an epic series!

Elemental magic: check.
Beautiful realms: check.
Comedic side characters: check.
Slow burn romance: check.
Forced marriage: check.

On her 100th birthday, Elayah has finally come into her own power and is ready to step into her role as future leader for her kingdom. But her entire life is turned on it’s head when devastation befalls her kingdom and she is forced to confront everything she ever believed to be true.

Hansen does an amazing job world building that is so easy to picture. Her descriptions are beautifully done. Her battle scenes are intense and believable. She has somehow created a villain you both hate and love at the same time and if he doesn’t have a redemption arc I will riot.

I hope you are ready to step into a world of adventure with Eleyah, Tayrem and Rayn. Watch out for Xyna, not only will she steal your daggers but she will also steal your heart! And if anyone knows how to actually travel by Lotus Blossom let me know, because that sounds FUN!!

Ready.. Set... Go cry in a corner- because that's exactly what this book will make you feel like.
Prisoner of Magnolia is Nicole D. Hansen's debut, and let me just say it did NOT feel like it. This book was a masterfully woven tale of systematic lies, heartbreak, rage and an fmc who's deliciously unique and who's kindness is her biggest strength. I've seen a lot of copy paste books lately in this genre, and don't get me wrong, the books sell because the concepts are good and well liked, but it was so refreshing reading a romantasy that didn't really remind me of any other fantasy book I've read in the past few years.

Aside from the story and political aspects setting an intriguing base for the rest of this series (we LOVE impossibly daunting tasks like the ones the book ended on), it was the characters that really made the book shine. Xyna will forever be my fav sassy, mean-but-mostly-mean-to-Tayrem, badass thief, and if anyone has seen me under Nicole's insta posts... y'all know I'm FERAL for Rayn. Consider yourself lucky that you aren't privy to my dm's or Kindle notes because I've said some unhinged things there.

With a well balanced plot and prose that just flows right , Prisoner of Magnolia more than measured up to the title of my most anticipated read of 2026<33

⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Prisoner of Magnolia

Okay… I cannot believe I’m saying this but I’m rooting for Rayn. I went into this thinking I was firmly on Tayrem’s side, but then Rayn showed up and I switched sides VERY quickly. There is definitely more to come from him and I NEED to know what it is. I’m also really hoping we get to see his relationship with Elayah develop becaus I’m invested. The world-building was one of my favourite things about this book. The amount of detail that has gone into creating this world really pulled me in, and I loved discovering more as the story went on.
I did find Elayah a little too trusting and forgiving at times. She’s a princess, so I wanted a little more from her in certain situations, but I’m hoping we see her grow and become less naive as the series continues. And if you love a SLOW BURN… THIS IS FOR YOU. Because when I say slow, I mean S L O W. And honestly? I loved every second of it. Give me the tension but maybe with someone else.
And XYNA…
LOVE. LOVE. LOVE.
That’s all I’m saying. 🤐😂
Overall, such an immersive fantasy with fantastic world-building, a painfully slow burn and characters I already need to know more about.Roll on book 2! 👀📖🖤

This story follow Elayah as her entire world is turned complete upside down. Elayah is this kind gentle soul who is all forgiving and trusting often to her detriment. She sees the good in others and wants the good for others.

We have our two MMC Rayn and Tayrem who couldn’t be more complete opposites. Tayrem her best friend who has always been by her side as her guard. Rayn the prince who comes and literally tears her world apart.

I really felt like Rayn was well fleshed out and had much growth throughout the book. I’m low key rooting for him. This book really does a beautiful job of presenting very complex characters in Elayah and Rayn.

The detail and description of the world was beautiful!

I am curious to see how Elayah continues to grow into her confidence in the next book.

Thank you to Nicole D. Hansen for the opportunity to ARC read this!

In Prisoner of Magnolia, Nicole has managed to create a world that feels all at once whimsical and dark - a beautiful facade with rising tensions lurking just below the surface. The protagonist, Elayah, is one of the most unique romantasy heroines I have read about, a woman whose greatest strength comes from her unwavering faith in people and her genuine desire to do good in spite of a world that tells her all those things are foolish. Watching her grow from uncertain and naive to realised and self-assured was one of the highlights of this story. And of course, she is well complimented by two foils in the form of her fellow MMCs. Her relationship with the antagonist, Rayn, plays out like a twisted game of cat and mouse that is deliciously impossible to look away from, and the burgeoning friends-lovers romance will have you wishing they would just kiss already in the best possible way.
If you like elemental magic, a proper slow-burn, and some truly heart-warming devotion, this is the next romantasy read for you.

5/5 ⭐️
1/5 🌶️

a phenomenal debut romantasy novel! it's consuming, dark, and alluring. set in an elven world, this book follows Elayah, the princess of one of the southern kingdoms, as she finally reaches the age to go through her elemental ceremony, where she will find her power (fire, water, air, or earth). but by going into her subconscious to locate the source of her power, she awakens something dark and ancient. then she's thrown into an invasion ploy on her kingdom, never knowing who she can trust, not even herself.

the world building in this book is so thorough and researched. every detail is accounted for, and i already know that the plot twists will keep on coming! Nicole made up a whole new language for this story! and it's so refreshing to read a story about elves rather than fae for once.

the characters are all great and interesting, especially the villain, Rayn. i'm absolutely obsessed with him. Elayah herself is an incredible FMC, with all her strengths and weaknesses. she's book-smart but still lacks the wisdom that comes from real-life experience because she's been so sheltered all her life. she can be naive, but her faith in the good of people is beautiful. she grows a lot through this book, and i'm excited to see how that will reflect in the sequel.

the romance is very much a slow burn, but the tension and banter are amazing. the love triangle kept me on my toes! will she end up with her loyal guard/best friend or with the charming morally gray villain? did i mention that those two also hate each other?

read if you like:
- dark romantasy
- elves
- plot twists
- elemental magic
- love triangle
- best friends to lovers
- enemies to lovers?
- great world building

First of all, I’d like to thank the author for the opportunity to receive this book as an ARC. This review reflects my honest thoughts and opinions. I began writing it around the halfway point of the story and updated it as I continued reading.

It’s clear that an incredible amount of time and effort went into crafting this book. The worldbuilding was immersive, detailed, and thoughtfully developed. The descriptions of the cities our characters explored made them easy to visualize, and the character descriptions helped bring everyone to life.

I also enjoyed the chapters told from the perspectives of other characters. They added depth to the story and gave a broader understanding of the world and its events.

I truly loved many of the characters in this book. However, I never expected to find myself loving one of the antagonists more than the protagonist.

As much as I loved the writing, worldbuilding, and overall plot, I felt the character development wasn’t quite as strong. Elayah, the Princess of Elria, is compassionate to her core, and I admired that about her. However, I found her to be almost *too* forgiving. From the beginning of the story until nearly the very end, she constantly tries to see the good in everyone. After witnessing the murder of her parents and the torture of someone she deeply loved, I expected to see more anger, grief, and a stronger desire for vengeance. While the story tells us she feels those emotions, they rarely translate into her actions until the final chapters. I only wish we had seen that side of her much sooner.

That said, I was still incredibly invested in the relationships throughout the book. Rayn, our seemingly cold hearted, bloodthirsty fire mage, ended up having my favorite character arc. I despised him in the beginning because of his actions and apparent lack of emotion, but watching his walls slowly crumble around Elayah was one of my favorite parts of the story. For someone whose magic is fire, it was fascinating to watch his icy exterior gradually melt.

Unfortunately, I found myself connecting with Rayn far more than Tayrem, our male lead. Tayrem is mentioned frequently throughout the first half of the novel, but his actual presence is surprisingly limited until much later. Even then, I didn’t feel like he experienced enough growth for me to form a strong emotional connection with him.

And Xyna? She was amazing. That’s all I have to say.

One thing I also wished we’d seen more of was Elayah’s magic. I would have loved to watch her gradually learn, train, and grow into her powers naturally rather than receiving such a significant surge of strength in the final chapters. Seeing that journey unfold would have made the payoff even more satisfying.

Overall, the lack of character development is what keeps this book from being a full 5 star read for me. If half star ratings were an option, I would have happily given this book 4.5 stars. Despite those criticisms, I genuinely enjoyed the story and am excited to continue the series. I can’t wait to see where the second book takes these characters, and I’m hopeful we’ll get to see even more growth from them.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys:
• Slow burn romance
• Love triangles
• Forced marriage
• Power awakening
• Rich, immersive worldbuilding
• Multiple POVs

I was fortunate enough to be able to read this book prior to publishing. I am really particular about not giving away spoilers. So I will just say this book really takes you on a journey, and I was here for all the twists and turns.

The characters have so much depth to them, and I loved picking up on all the little nuances she subtly wove in throughout the story. I loved the growth that we see with the FMC. And I loved the overall atmosphere and world building. There's a certain character in here that I am obsessed with but I will keep it zipped on that front!

This is a great debut novel! And honestly I got sucked in in the same way I got sucked into ACOTAR and Plated Prisoner. It carries a similar style of pacing, twists, similar level of romance, and similar explorations on feminine rage, self identity, and morality. And those are some of my favorites so needless to say, I will be continuing the series as soon as she decides to grace us with book two! :)

I lost count of how many times I told myself just one more chapter reading Prisoner of Magnolia - it sucked me in with brilliant world building, spun me round with a MMC and a supporting cast so downright rotten I wanted to throw my device across the room, and then finally spat me out feeling absolutely exhausted and desperate for more!!

This is an absolute journey of discovery for the FMC Elayah - and a Princess who loves pockets in her dresses is a winner in my eyes!

A slow burn fantasy romance with elemental magic, brilliant world building, engaging main and supporting characters and a plot that takes more turns than a rollercoaster I would recommend this book to the TBR shelf of readers who enjoy:

I'm so honored I was able to be an ARC reader for something as special as this book. This was the first book I've ever read that took place in a land of elves, and their elemental powers were so cool to read about in action. I also loved how involved flowers like magnolias and lotuses were! The invented words were also so unique! The slow burn was a SLOW BURN, and I loved their relationship/friendship. I dare say I loved the banter between the two men in this book more (hehe, I know they hate each other). The main character is very naive, which I think worked well. I just wished that the reader was given more information about the other character's motivations so I had a better understanding of the purpose of a lot of scenes, rather than just being strung along with Elayah. Overall, I absolutely loved it, and I will be reading book 2 IMMEDIATELY once it's out.

Recieved as an ARC

This story felt like a fairytale, the world itself, the magic, the way they travel in one part of this world, it was just beautiful.
We follow the main caracter as she becomes of age and there is a ceremony where she has to find her power.
After the ceremony something bad happens and she is forced marry the villian.
I loved the chemestry between the guard and her. And I loved the way she grows through the story when she learns some things along the way.
The way we get to know the villian makes you change your perspective of him.

Its a story about love, friendship, seing the good in people, about magic, betrayel and self growth.
I look forward to the next book to see where this will go

This book was fantastic!

Let me start by saying that the world-building was immaculate. The information was spread out enough that it wasn't overwhelming, but the small details were done so beautifully. The fight scenes are *chefs kiss*
The characters are amazing, and well fleshed out. The subtle, slow-burn changes in the FMC's worldview are masterfully handled. I am not usually a fan of a love-triangle trope, but this is done so well.

Prisoner of Magnolia does not read like a debut novel at all. It is an absolute must-read for those who love high fantasy and even higher stakes!

If book two doesn't arrive ASAP, I may riot.

Prisoner of Magnolia is a fascinating tale, mixing thrills and twists with banter and emotional scenes. Nicole does a fabulous job crafting this highly entertaining story, which is one that was hard to put down. Not only were the MC’s ones to connect with but the secondary characters were strong as well.
I can’t wait to see what Nicole has in store next for this world!

This book had magic, betrayals and forced marriage. The FMC Elayah starts off super sheltered before chaos happens and blows up her life. She ends up forced into a marriage with Rayn, which she chose so that she can save her friend and guard Tayrem. Sometimes, she was far too naive and her choices reflect that. Her world is too dark for that type of blind kindness. She does have some growth throughout the story though. I actually enjoyed Rayn. He was delulu and villainous but in an enjoyable to read way. Overall, I enjoyed this and will be reading the next book.
