It is a Catholic manual of meditations for Lent and Passion-time; a spiritual guide for secular persons. The mind is assisted to withdraw from distractions and fix its thoughts and affections upon Jesus Christ as he treads the thorny way of the cross. The writer gives his reflections a historical, moral, and local character.
It is profound meditation that unlocks the treasures and brings to light that hidden wisdom contained in Scripture. All the marvelous coloring and finish of perfection that blend with such wonderful effect in the story of the Life of Jesus, are conveyed to it through the medium of His Sacred Passion. His sermons, doctrine, and miracles, scattered through his whole life, shine forth more brightly as his death drew near.
This book must be read slowly and with reflection. The author suggests those who use his book to read one of his "considerations" daily. Each "consideration" is also divided into two parts, so that those who prefer it can read one part in the morning and one in the evening. There are forty-five such considerations. They embrace the whole period of time from the first prediction of Jesus to His Apostles of His passion, to His being taken down from the Cross and laid in the tomb. The considerations are brief, each one requiring only a few moments to read. They are concise and lucid and simple in thought and language, and thus well adapted to interest, instruct, and edify.
