Twisted, bizarre, lovely little collection of flash fiction and two longer stories, both of which were wonderful. "Fixed" in particular is great. I'm really glad I came across this chapbook and this author from the Athena's Daughters, Vol. 1 Kickstarter campaign.
A collection of previously published flashes and shorts by Jean Marie Ward: District Coincidental, The First Stone, Burning Down the House, Clear as Glass, About the Flies, and Fixed.
Burning Down the House takes up 40% of the Kindle book and Fixed takes up 55% of the book, with the other four stores using up the other 5% - so four flashes and two short stories. I have read Burning Down the House before, but the rest were new for me. These are quick, enjoyable stories but nothing mind-bending or shocking - a good beach read.
District Coincidental - Contemporary political thriller flash. The First Stone - Contemporary medical thriller flash. Burning Down the House - Urban Fantasy short story with a wizard battle, fire elemental, and club dancing. Clear as Glass - Contemporary cozy murder flash. About the Flies - Urban Fantasy (demon) flash. Fixed - Urban Fantasy short story with fae, shifters, and veterinarians.
Note: The formatting in the copy I received was bad. This might not be a problem for other people who receive this collection through other means. In fact the formatting is so bad, I am deleting this off my Kindle.
★★☆☆☆ District Coincidental ★★☆☆☆ About the Flies ★★★☆☆ The First Stone ★★☆☆☆ Clear as Glass ★★★☆☆ Burning Down the House ★★★★☆ Fixed
Got this as a bonus for a Kickstarter I backed years ago and finally got around to reading it. Burning Down the House and Fixed were the only stories here that were over 700 words long and I think most of the shorter stories definitely suffered because of that. The First Stone managed to capture my attention with an interesting idea in that short amount of space but the others not so much. Not a bad read overall and I did really enjoy Fixed, but then again I do always love a faerie story.
