Новая книга одного из лучших в мире специалистов по истории Второй мировой войны профессора Гвидо Кноппа посвящена немецкому вермахту — вооруженным силам нацистской Германии 1935–1945 годов, куда входили сухопутные войска, военно-морской флот и ВВС (люфтваффе). В вермахте служило более 18 миллионов человек, веривших в превосходство своей крови. Их верховным главнокомандующим был сам Гитлер, и они считались мощнейшим оружием в его руках. Эта армия захватила половину Европы, но в итоге потерпела тотальное поражение. Более пяти миллионов солдат вермахта погибло. Гвидо Кнопп в своей книге подводит итог деятельности этой организации, исследует ее структуру, функции и состав — от генерала до рядового солдата. В книгу включены до сих пор не известные и ранее не опубликованные документы, исторические факты, фотографии из частных архивов.

Guido Knopp is a German journalist and author. He is well known in Germany, mainly because he has produced a great number of TV documentaries, predominantly about the Nazi era, but also about other topics, such as Stalinism.

Since the war in Ukraine started, every day I look for the answers on the question: HOW? How is it possible that one human being could do this to other human being? No, not even in 21 century, but in general. Where does this dark slimy matter in heads and souls come from? My brain just refuses to put massacres of innocent people and raped children in any "box". Yesterday, for the whole day, I was desperately searching for answers in this book - "Die Wehrmacht" by Guido Knopp (2007). And I've got some.

First, it seems that russian government read this or other book about german army and used it as a tutorial for the war in Ukraine. Second, when people know and feel their impunity, when they understand that everything they do is allowed by the management, and moreover, they will be awarded at the end, they can do terrifying things. Some participants may disagree, but it's still a minority. Third, war is always, always, a tool to achieve geopolitical goals and never - moral or idealogical goals. The image of Enemy created by propaganda at all times is used by the state to justify mass killings in its own interests.
Fourth, the death of a leader-dictator is a decisive factor in ending the war as soon as possible. And, russians are and will be facing the same pure hate that the Soviet people felt for the Germans, for several generations.
