From the author of the award winning Unspeakable, and the best selling PODs, comes the highly anticipated sequel to PODs. A world where death stalks the unsuspecting, and this time even the PODs might not save them.
A virus nearly wiped out humankind...
Months have passed since a human infection has been reported. Survivors of the deadly pandemic have finally started to build a life in a world left devastated by plague.
Ironically, for nineteen-year-old Eva, life made more sense when she battled the deadly Infected than it does in the serenity of her new home in Rosewood. Separated from fiancé and former POD-mate, David, after an impossible ultimatum, Eva finds her life a little lonely and a lot confusing.
But as troubled as Eva’s life is, it's about to take a turn for the worse as untold dangers watch and wait for the right moment to attack…

Michelle is an award-winning YA author... but if you ask her who she really is, she'll answer, "I'm the wife of an amazing man, mom of four awesome kids, a reader of words, and writer of stories. I love candles and books, think garden gnomes are creepy and M&Ms are the perfect food (especially peanut butter). I live and write in Texas, but was born and raised in Flint, Michigan and will always think of the Great Lakes state as home."
Michelle was kind enough to send me this book early to review for my blog. It is truly an amazing book and defiantly worth reading!! I love her sense of humor, how she can build up suspense and Eva is a true badass. If you want to know more about the writing process head over to my blog. An interview I did with Michelle just went live. A full review of the book will go up on my blog mid-September ! www.BeautifulNewChapter.wordpress.com
So firstly I was borderline bloodlust violently pissed off at Eva for parts of this book. And Devlin. And David. Look I was a David fangirl (for the most part) in the first book, PODs. Devlin was...well. He was Devlin. Eva wasn't terribly interested in him, so there wasn't much TO him as a result (other then some interesting banter). Honestly I'd be more drawn towards Devlin then David if this was real life, but David was there for Eva. They were there for each other. And while their relationship was perhaps not terribly...healthy in the real world, in the POD world they hella more functional (and sane).
Some of that unhealthy attachment carried over into this book and a whole lot of confusing pronoun games were played. I honestly had no idea what was going on with David and Eva's relationship, or Eva and Devlin's, or David and Devlin's or the three together. Devlin kept mentioning "I hate this being a secret" but they were anything BUT secretive. Eva kept noticing David's scowl looks, but I'm pretty sure they had that conversation where he was like "is there someone new?" and got irritated THEN. His continued possessiveness (when he was the one who said "this is it for us") nearly had me punching him.
Not that Eva was blameless - their continued issue of communication reared its evil head as well. Also obtuseness was everyone's issue (David when Devlin was talking to him, Devlin when Eva was talking to him, Eva when David or Devlin or ANYONE was talking to her about Important Emotional Stuff).
I liked that the pace was fast in this book. There wasn't any down time - that was largely glossed over, for which I was happy to allow - and Pickett kept the plot was floundering. There was some redundancy--there's 3...4? different road trips? All of which had expected complications and there was a lot of red herrings regarding characters and their outcomes. Plus, and I say this with fondness if not patience, the ending was SO PAT. I already hid this review for possible character spoilers, but let's hide this nugget behind more spoiler tags
I'm happy that there was a happy ending for many of the folks. I'm happy that Eva and David have peace in their lives. I'm happy that Devlin is now single and I can play the Mary Sue girl and think about helping him get over Eva. In the end I was in this for the characters and their lives moreso than anything else. Yeah the book had some scientific plotholes and the ending pretty much had everyone in the PODs being like "FU" to the rest of the villages, but I didn't really care. All that mattered to me was that my girl was safe, because at the end of the day she deserved it.

Man, this book was really hard to get through for me. 😂 if I wasn’t such a quick reader I probably would have ditched it. The romance was painful. I couldn’t stand Eva and how she was waffling between David and Devlin. First off, her reason for breaking it off with David was super immature- they could have worked that out. Also, her getting together with Devlin so quickly was really unbelievable for me. It just kept getting worse as the story went on too- she kept being flirty and kissy with both, and it was too much.
A couple of examples: 1. She wanted to just be paligamist (sp? 😂) and be with both of them them 2. She calls herself a slut for going after both guys “slutsville here I come”. She’s way too aware of how poorly she’s treating these guys.
And the guys just taking it in stride- David saying he’ll fight for her despite just catching her intense make out session with Devlin? The guys fighting over her- I honestly didn’t feel like she deserved this 😂
She finally admits she wants only David and they quickly get engaged for real and get married. And Devlin just tells her how much he loves her and always will knew it would end up this way? Where’s the justifiable anger he should have? Anyway…
For a story about zombies there sure is wayyyyy too in focus on this love triangle. I just really wasn’t ok with with it. Anyway, I don’t recommend this series unless you care more about the romance than you do plot and the adventure.

I'm SOOOOOO happy this finally came out! I loved PODs and I seriously couldn't wait for the next installment! The Infected lived up to my expectations! I really like how there is a genuine picture of an infected on the cover of the book. Blue veins and everything! I know a lot of people said the blurb for PODs gave away a lot of the story and I can say that the blurb for The Infected definitely doesn't! In fact, the blurb is only a tiny piece of the story.
I had a love hate feeling for David in this book. If you recall from my review of PODs, I actually really liked his character. I ended up not liking him about a chapter in to this book and I felt like that for over half the book. Some stuff happens in between when PODs ended and The Infected starts that is explained in the first chapter that really changed how I felt about David for a while. Eventually I came back to liking him again, but not as much as I did in PODs. I also really enjoyed Eva's development in this story. She decided that absolutely no one was going to tell her what to do or how to do it and I loved it! She gets told to stay behind on a mission while the boys handle it or not to take on the infected and she says HECK NO! She stood up for herself and showed the men just what she was capable of doing and how well she was capable of doing it.
We also got to get to know some new characters such as Devlin and his sister Jessica and some other people from Rosewood, the village Eva was assigned to live in. Devlin was generally a nice guy and I quite enjoyed getting to know more about him throughout the book. I also enjoyed the friendship he formed with Eva. We also got to see more of Tiffany and George and see how their relationship has grown and developed.
I have to say the story went in a different direction than I was expecting. I was not expecting David and Eva and the group that got stuck outside of Rosewood to make a trip to the main settlement to get stuff. I was also not expecting them not to just up and leave Rosewood for good so easily. I was expecting a little more time and thought to be put in that decision. I was also surprised at how many people decided to leave with Eva and David and their group. It's really sad when so many people put their faith in a 19 and 20 year old over the military. That says something.
I have to say I was super happy with the ending! Eva got something back that is so precious to her and I couldn't be happier! And Eva and David finally got their happiness as well after all that happened throughout the book.
Would have given full stars but too much love triangle drama it pretty much centered around that and Eva trying to be a badass wasn't much else and the ominous way it was wrote it took away the suspense and the cover is ridiculous looks great but doesn't portray the books
I enjoyed reading this. Not remembering all the details of the first book wasn't important other than my ties to 'Daveva' were not as strong as they probably would have been.
