Originally from the Ukraine, I am still considered a new face to America. Speaking three languages including English, that became just as natural to me as my native Russian.
I grew up in a town on the south of Ukraine doing the same things that other kids my age did. Dreaming, hoping and wishing. Growing up, I spoke absolutely no English and never even saw myself somewhere abroad. Nevertheless writing a novel in another language!
I went to the local school that brought mostly negative experience in my life. But it shaped me throughout the years. My college life was much better. I was known to study well and to go out partying as much as it was possible.
In my first year of college I began to work in the marriage agency and met my future husband. We dated and traveled to most of the Europe along with Egypt.
When I finally got my fiancée visa, we both moved to the states, where soon after, got married. In the first few years I did some modeling and acting. Photo-shoots, run-way and photo in the magazine fulfilled my childhood's dream.
A few years later I became a mother of a wonderful and most handsome little boy. Along with learning and experiencing motherhood, I began to make hand-made jewelry and organic soaps. This hobby turned into my small business and became bigger than I thought it would.
In the last year I discovered: an author lives inside me. Never did I think that I would write an English book and that I would love doing it. But I did! And I loved it!
Ever wonder what Earth’s future could be? Is it possible that a new breed of humanoids could rise in an effort to survive on another planet? What if two species came to be? Would war still be a huge part of our future? Black Wings by Iryna K. Combs is a dark and frightening look at a future world where hatred, fear and torture still thrive, even in the shadows of love in a time when humanoids now have wings.
She was left behind when her people left to find a safe and peaceful haven. For one long and brutal year Annabel was tortured, drugged and tortured again. Only through quick thinking and her own brand of deceit does she manage to get away. Near death, she arrives to be embraced by her own kind, but one man sees more than a changed survivor, he sees love and it terrifies Annabel. As she adjusts to her new freedom, her very blood could hold secrets that will help her people, because Annabel is different now.
Is war on the horizon as Annabel’s people, the Anlights prepare to stand against the evil, warmongering Varkin? Will Annabel become more than just another soldier? Is she the key to victory? Young, confused and damaged by her past, will Annabel overcome her past and find healing in the arms of the man she has fought so hard not to love?
Hang on for this one, clever, fresh, and full of action, Black Wings is a brilliant tale that begs to be read. The plot is fabulous, the details in each scene come to life and the characters are prime examples of good vs evil, with a touch of that gray area that adds more depth. All flows perfectly with only a few bumps in the dialogue that sometimes seemed not as developed as the story, which can be chalked up to the fact that this talented author's first language is not English. Looks to me like there is a new author on the block with a story to tell!

4 fangs Earth has been killed by years of neglect, poisoned by chemicals and technological interference. Humans have to leave and find a new home to start again unfortunately the people in charge make mistakes again. After a new project alters humans into two races the good Anlights and the bad Varkins the world is split. Dexter is an Anlight guard protecting his people from the Varkin threat. He has been told of a change coming in his life and is unsettled waiting for it to happen. While on guard he saves Annabel an Anlight yet different and he then realizes how his life will change. Annabel is an Anlight she was trying to leave with all of the others when she was taken prisoner by the Varkins. After months of terrible torture she has managed to escape and she has something important with her. All she has to do now is make it to her people the she can rest in peace. This is a fantastic concept the clear definition between good and bad allows you to quickly get into the plot. The Varkins are truly evil and the descriptions of their actions leave you feeling true anger towards them. The Anlights however were a little too good for me but I understand that the author is showing a clear line between good and bad. Dexter if strong, caring and shows his emotions openly but personally I like a little grit in my male leads. Annabel is amazingly strong and although she is a victim in the beginning of the book she is resilient. The plot has a fresh feel to it, the characters are written to draw out emotions and the plot has a lot of potential for a great series. Independent reviewer for paranormal romance and authors that rock.
This was my first real sci-fi fantasy book. I was actually really intrigued. It caught me a little off guard at first because I didn't know what to expect. It was a lot different from any other sic-fi books I have previously tried before. Annabel really touched my soul. What she endured from the Varkins. It was absolutely amazing. I really enjoyed when she meets Dexter. To find out the she is a a Anglight. That was really cool.

After seeing the attractive and somewhat magical book cover on a web page, I was convinced to order the book for myself. Having already read the first chapters of the book, I realized I had made a successful choice. The book is very well written and despite the fact that the story is like a fairy tale, the dialogue is so realistic that it’s easy to identify with the main characters. The story includes horror, thrill and romance, and the events are described in such a captivating way that it was difficult for me to interrupt the reading until the last page was gobbled up. I warmly recommend Iryna K. Combs' debut book to any adult readers. I wouldn’t be surprised if the book would be chosen for a film adaptation someday.
This is the first book I have read from this author and I was impressed by the detail of the story itself.
The prologue was definitely needed. It helps you understand the context of the rest of the book. The detail with which both of the lands and the new races are described is amazing. I could picture both species in my head and had no problem understanding how different both cultures were. Both the New Land and the Old Land locations were described in such detail that it was easy to follow the story and see the stark contrasts between the two. Even the way that the species themselves were physically described highlighted the conflict in the story. I thoroughly enjoyed how the tension was built in the Old Land and how in the New Land with the Anlights things were so different there was a sense of peace even when Annabel herself was uneasy. And while I like the way that the story played out with Annabel, Dex, and the Anlights on Verda Island, I honestly found that the characters were lacking.
Both Annabel and Dex seemed very like very flat characters. Honestly most of the characters appeared one sided except for Maximus. Even the dialog was stilted and sometime took on a more juvenile tone than I thought appropriate for a story this good. The way Dex was portrayed made him seem like he wasn't that smart, and Annabel truly seemed like a very cold person most of the time. The characters just did not seem up to par with the actual story itself.
Still, it was an enjoyable and thought provoking read.
I was not quite prepared for what I was going to read. I was more or less aware of the author's international background, multicultural upbringing and life changing experiences, but did not have a clue she had poured out her heart and soul on those pages. What I mean is not the very cliche I am referring to, but the simple narrative she uses in a way the reader is easily immersed in a whole new world of opportunities, threats, future scenarios or - revisited past, perhaps. On the surface, the book reads as an action-packed sci-fi, fantasy story full of twists and turns. However, if read carefully it portrays some deeply social, cultural, moral issues that have persisted over millennia of human history. The vital problems this read unobtrusively reflects on are some universally valuable things like the question of freedom, free will, choice of development, and good nature vs evil in general, among other things. Moreover, the style of writing is really entertaining due to apparent reasons, also mentioned above.
I really did not know what to expect when I first started reading this story, but it certainly grabbed my attention as well as intrigued me.
Annabel is such a strong character, she is the heroine in the story, literally she saves her new race. How she does it is excruciating to endure but she does because she has faith that she will be able to get away from those that have enslaved her and be able to get back to her own people. We follow her as she begins to make a new life trying to overcome the terror of what she went through while being enslaved.
The story is basically the fight between good and evil, the characters throughout the whole story were well developed. What an imagination this author has creating this world that I could see it clearly, the details were very vivid.
Great beginning for a first time author, I would highly recommend it and will look forward to what other stories she writes.

I’ll start with the good sides. The first thing I’ve noticed is how imaginative her idea is! On one side, there are the Anlights, a good people with wings, and on the other, Varkins, a very bad people with enhanced strength. I must admit I simply loved how what’s inside one’s heart is shown by their appearance. It’s very original. The author uses a good and poignant imagery and has a knack for describing locations. The way she switches point of views is also to be noted as it does not leave a sour feeling of confusion but keeps you reading. The book is filled with action and romance – despite the latter not being of much interest to me, I must admit it was interesting and well-woven. The author makes use of good vocabulary, considering English is her third language. There is also her biography at the beginning of the book to explain why sometimes sentences can sound weird or unidiomatic – a wise decision, if you ask me. The cover of her book is worth mentioning: it is aesthetically beautiful, with a quote explaining the story, it is poignant, and it shows a special something that belongs only to Annabel… Could you find it? Last but not least, there are many twists and turns worth your time. I was surprised at one twist in particular, but don’t worry, I won’t spoil it for you!
Now is the time for the bad sides. One thing that seriously bothered me was how Annabel is a courageous and strong woman at the beginning, but then as soon as she’s safe she starts acting weak, shy, and isolates herself. She doesn’t want to go anywhere or try anything different. She appears to be a totally different person… Only at the end does she go back to being the one she was when we first met her. I liked her a lot until she started acting so weirdly; she then became just a normal character, a flat one. Other than that, there is a lack of description of emotions. We barely feel what’s going on in Annabel’s mind and heart; more insight on this would be great! Moreover, the Anlights, the good people, are a little too good… and cheerful. After having lost most of their families and people, I don’t think they’d be so happy in general. I understand that they are meant to represent the goodness, but sometimes it’s a bit exaggerated as most people wouldn’t be so helpful or ready to help, or sensitive. I’ve also noticed there is no table of contents – one thing I particularly like in a book in order to know where I’m at and just to read the chapters’ titles. Call me curious and I’ll agree.
Overall, the story is an entertaining read. Considering that the author is Ukrainian and that Black Wings is her first book, one can overlook the mistakes and sometimes strange sentences for the sake of the story itself, which is very good. I give it a 4 out of 5 rating for the interesting story; the writing needs more practice, though. I sincerely believe, thanks to the creative story, that this should be a best-seller!
P.S.: I want to congratulate the author, Iryna K. Combs, once again on her first book! Also, I hope there is a sequel coming for it left me wanting more of Annabel, Dexter, and this new world.
Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.
I usually try to write a blurby bit, but for some reason, I'm not able to word it right, so here is the official blurb:
A new time. A new planet. A new world. New technologies. Two new humanoid species. A new war. The two species separate, but in the removal, some of the best are left behind among the worst. Captured and held as slaves, they are treated cruelly for entertainment. Torture. Pain. Annabel, endures a year of such cruelty, kept alive only by way of syringes which, while healing, cause a greater agony. She discovers a secret held by their leader, and decides to help her own kind by escaping-even if it means a final death, preferable to the life she has endured. Her escape succeeds, and she joins her own kind at the other end of the planet. Among her new friends she meets many who help her adjust to their happier life. Will Annabel find romance? Or will another war break her down?
I need to make two points that affected my reading experience and because of that, my rating. 1. This is a first time author. It shows in places. Sometimes the story moves slowly, and others far too fast. The story jumps around alot and it took me far longer to read the 226 pages than would normally do, because I had to keep putting it down. 2. According to the bio on Goodreads, English is not Combs' first language. It shows in places where the dialogue is...clunky... and I found myself reading what it SHOULD say, rather than what it DID say, if that makes sense?
It is a GOOD book though, and with some editing could be a great book. Its a little different and different is always good in my opinion. It tells Annabel's story, of her torture and her escape, of her recovery with her people. Its almost all Annabel though, and only a little bit of Dexter, Annabel's rescuer.
I'm not entirely sure this tale has ended! It has a relatively happy ending for Annabel and Dexter, but the ongoing war between the Varkin and the Anlights is not over, may never be over. And the ending of this book can very easily be the beginning of a second book. I should like to read it, if there is. If only to see how Combs is progressing with her craft.
Some violence, the torture is described in detail, some of it, anyway, but clean. I'd rate it upper Young Adult, 16+.
3 stars
**same worded review will appear on Goodreads, Amazon.co.uk Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble**
This story starts out with a much needed prologue that is set in the past and really helps the reader to understand the story. The Earth has become unlivable and the humans have now moved to a very similar planet that they can strive on. Things were starting to be exactly like they were on Earth including the crime. This new Planet has two continents and each one has a president. The presidents decided to create a machine that will change people by monitoring their thoughts, etc. Even though there was a flaw in the machine, it was still used and it made major changes to the humans, making them in to two different races. The good and the bad. The author describes the lands and the people with such detail that I could see all of it in mind’s eye. The fear that the Anlights feel due to the Varkins having the remaining core. What The Anlights don’t know is that the Varkins kept some of the Anlights for themselves. Annabel is an Anlight that has been held hostage. She is bound and determined to escape no matter what. This story takes you through deception and deceit, Torture and escape as well as heartache and love. The author uses description and vivd detail to draw the reader in and hold their attention. She does an excellent job with character description as well. I would recommend this story to anyone that has a love for scifi romance. This is a step outside of my normal reading material but I am truly glad that I took the risk and jumped head first with an open mind into this book. I look forward to reading more by Iryna.
Here we are on a new planet, with two new types of people. And with two different types of people, come different opinions, resulting in wars, and with that come all sorts of new technologies.
Annabel has her mind set to solve everyone’s problems, and it helps that she has learned what secret the leader has. Annabel thinks her best bet would be to escape and help her own kind, even if it means in the end, the loss of her own life. At least if she frees her people from their problems, her death will have not been in vain.
Luckily, Annabel is successful, and now she can join her people at the other end of the planet. This is where she plans on making new friends, and a new start. Here she hopes to find romance, and safely remain free from the gruesome pain and tortures of the enemy.
Annabel must remain strong, and focused. Her feelings matter, but must not get in the way. She wants to be a normal everyday person, with a normal everyday life, but can she let herself settle down, or does she truly even want to?
As I read this book, "Black Wings" I couldn’t help but sympathize with Annabel, taking care of her people, and wanting only the best for them. She is a very strong and focused woman. I give this book “Black Wings” five stars, as I truly enjoyed the intensity of it, very much so. I was worried, and distraught, wanting only the best to turn out. This was a truly enjoyable book, very sentimental. I felt the words like they were meant to be read, truly emotionally impacting me, every inch of the way!
I really enjoyed this story, and thought the characterization and world building was well done and I felt I was right there. I easily identified and empathized with the characters, and was soon drawn into the story and immersed in the action.
My one slight niggle was that there is rather a lot of ‘telling’ rather than ‘showing’ especially in the beginning of the first chapter, but this is possibly just the author’s style of writing and certainly once I got used to her ‘voice’ I was able to bypass this aspect, and found myself enjoying the tale more and more.
The story is fast paced and kept me guessing. Annabel goes through so much but never loses her determination to help her people, the Anlights, and as her treatment by the Varkins becomes more and more abusive, it is easy for the reader to hate them as much as she does. She is brave and loyal, and willing to sacrifice herself for the Anlights. The story builds to a thrilling climax and the romance that runs through the story comes to a touching conclusion.
This author is new to me and I was amazed to find that English is not her first language, which may explain the ‘telling’ I mentioned earlier. I cannot imagine trying to write a novel in a language which was not my natural first language, so Ms Combs is to be commended on what must have been quite a difficult undertaking, resulting in a novel of amazing originality and imagination. If you like Fantasy Science Fiction/Romance with plenty of action I think you wlll enjoy this book.

I give this book 3. 5 fangs So I'm rounding to 4 stars
First off this is a great book which I thoroughly enjoyed, cool concept I loved the premise. I found the characters to be well organized and full of life. This is the authors first novel and a very good start, I did notice a simplicity to the language and plot development that I believe will only improve with her next book. Annabel is an anlight a new type of being that came to be after an experiment gone wrong changed all people into either the good angel like Anlights or the darker demon like Varkins. As in most cases the two groups fought mercilessly until finally the Anlights were forced to flee and move to a new part of the world away from the Varkins. What the Anlights didn't know was the Varkins had stolen some of the Anlights for amusement and worse experiments, Annabel is one of those unfortunate enough to be taken. She's strong and smart, caring and determined she's also slightly different than the others. Through cruelty and torture Her only goal is to escape and to warn her fellow Anlights, to bring them something they desperately need. Follow Annabel as she discovers how strong she really is, that good can come from evil and love can find a way.
**** reviewer for paranormal romance and authors that rock
The world of Black Wings is one where humanity has been irrevocably altered by science so that their exteriors reflect the most black-and-white view of their inner desires and beliefs. On the one hand, there are the Anlights, the winged and beautiful representatives of the best aspect of humanity, and on the other, the Varkins, gray-skinned, yellow-eyed predators formed from the criminals and outcasts. Annabel, the last surviving Anlight imprisoned by the Varkins, the only member of her race with black wings, has just about given up hope of ever rejoining her people when the unexpected happens: the leader of the entire Varkin race develops a sexual interest in her.
Iryna K. Combs’ Black Wings offers the reader a parable of a society with no gray areas of morality, the moment of the transformation deciding for each entity and its descendants whether good, or evil, is their lot. The action through the first two chapters is well-structured and paced, but unfortunately the middle two-thirds are much slower, the main focus being Annabel’s romantic entanglements. The action ramps up again abruptly in the last twenty pages to culminate in the final battle of good against evil, winding up the story begun in chapters one and two. Overall, this is a fairly light, easy read, well-suited to younger readers, with good scene-setting that in many ways forms the main strength of the story.
I am normally not a huge Sci-Fi/Fantasy Romance type reader but I was asked to read for review Black Wings and I am so glad that I accepted!
This was a great story that had a lot of depth to it. There was heart ache and heart break, deceit and deception, revenge and redemption, but most of all a HEA. At the beginning, we were told the back story of where we were, and why we were there now and what changes had happened to us in the future. Without that, I would have been totally lost. So glad it was there :)
The story line concept was really nice and entertaining, the descriptions to details were easy to visualize, the characters were easy to become attached to and their dialogue flowed nicely and was easy to follow.
This was written as with mostly Annabel's pov but at times we would get Dexter's pov.
All in all, a really good read that I enjoyed! For a first book by this author, I am very pleased with the results.
So....
Would I recommend this book? Yes!
Would I read more from this author? Yes (I hope there will be more in the works- I would love to see a continuation of Annabel and Dex's lives together.
Combs provides a thorough prologue setting the stage for plenty of anticipated action matched with interesting characters, an imaginative science fiction tale of good vs. bad peppered with correct amounts of dystopian, fantasy and romance.
Annabel is one strong female heroine. What she endures is affecting and her strength is amazing. She's humble, quiet and grounded for what she hast lost, suffered and uncertain of the future. Combs gives an all around glimpse into Annabel and as time passes Annabel grows and evolves. She is a young woman willing to sacrifice much for her homeland and people.
The narrative is exciting, I enjoyed the practical and slow romance angle, just enough to push the story along. Annabel is traumatized from her experience and needs time to heal, I like Combs approach on this giving Annabel a realistic edge while developing a deeper connection with the audience.
Imaginative narrative with one memorable uber strong and independent female protagonist. I would love to see this translated into a graphic novel, very vivid descriptions penned by Combs, an artists keen eye could really bring the story to illustrated life.
I was excited to read this book based on the blurb. It seemed to have everything I enjoy about a fantasy novel with a twist of dystopian (another one of my guilty pleasures.)
The premise is excellent. However, the execution fell short of my expectations. The most exciting part of the story happened in the past and was told in first person, while the rest was written in third person. It should have been emotionally charged, but I couldn't connect with the characters. It felt disjointed and like "a tale told" instead of a story I could live alongside the players.
It could be that the author is not a native English speaker. I can't imagine trying to write in a secondary language (let's face it, the grammar rules in English are extremely difficult to master for those of us who've grown up with it). I admire her for believing in her story enough to press through such a difficult thing.
Kudos to her. This story might work for you if the style of the writing isn't as important to you as the substance. I need the style to be engaging if I'm going to appreciate the substance. Color me shallow, if you like.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for this honest review.
This was a brilliantly written book. I was completely new to this author, and must say I will be looking out for more to dive straight into, as I really loved the writing style and story weaving that she has given us, in this book.
I loved the futuristic sense to the story. It is always a style and genre that I enjoy reading, and this was definitely top notch. The story really gave you a feel that you were there, in the moment, but though it felt natural, you were well into a future setting.
The characters were all done well, be it main or secondary characters. Each was given a lot of thought, both in background and personality. They had their own style and interacted together in a very interesting way. I also, personally, loved the main.
The pace was excellent. I felt swept off my feet, caught up in the moment and really kept guessing and interested in what was happening. I was always wondering what was next and how it would affect those I had grown to know.
Overall, I highly recommend this read, especially if you like futuristic reads. I know I will be reading more by Iryna.

Annabel is forced to face her nightmares and try to protect the new life she’s been given. The action sequences are good and like I mentioned before, the pacing is quick. I have to say, the premise of the story is good. Resettlement on a new planet, new humanoid species who become enemies, love and family; these are all qualities I like in a Sci-Fi book. The book is a little rough around the edges. It makes for a good first edition, but I found the characters to be a bit robotic and hard to connect with. It felt very much like I was being told a story and not reading the story (sounds confusing I know, but I’m not exactly sure how to describe it). I think with some editing and revision this could be a really good book. I don’t know what the author’s plans are but, there are a few openings within the manuscript to create a series. One should note that this is not only the author’s debut novel, but it’s her first one in English! So kudos for that! I have to say based on the technical stuff, I would give it a 3 out of 5 Stars
I haven’t been reading lately. So much going on and too much on my mind to sit through a book let alone review one. My partner Kathy asked if I was interested in reading and reviewing Black Wings. At first I was a little hesitant but I think it was just the distraction I needed.
Annabel is a great character. There are many layers to her and I really enjoyed watching her journey unfold page by page. The people she meets after she escapes are pretty great to read also. I don’t want to give too much away so I’ll just tell you there is especially one character that will make you swoon.
The ending I will say felt a little rushed as I got there but what I really liked was the ending itself. It left things a little open ended and gave me hope of seeing book 2. Hope that makes sense.
I’m really excited to see what’s next for these characters and especially this author.
4.5 stars
I received a copy of Black Wings from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This story takes you a place where there are two species called Anlights and Varkins. They fight mercilessly, and the Anlights are finally pushed to move to the other end of the planet. The Varkins, being demon like wreak havoc by kidnapping some of the Anlights for their amusement. Annabel is one of the Anlights taken and endures a year of cruelty and torture. This story follows her journey of pain, self-discovery, and finding light amongst the darkness.
I believe this read is definitely worth giving a try. I’ll be keeping an eye on this author because I’m more than certain her books will only get better and better. I can’t express how truly honored I am to read an author’s first book.
The Color of Ink received a copy in exchange for an honest review. I’m give this book a 3.5, but will be rounding up for effort and originality. (4 stars)
Annabel is one of those strong yet still cares about others heroines. She is easy to like and cheer on. This story is written with very clear lines of good and evil personalities. Some of the science fiction part of this story is vague. You hear about the "core" yet I'm not sure how or why it works like it does. Annabel gets experimented on where the results make her special. The way she handles this with the Varkins (the evil side) and the Anlights (the good side) shows you about her character. There is a dark side here with Annabel getting tormented. Might be a bit much for some readers who don't want to read about someone being hurt. There's also a romance story hidden in here too. I was given this story for an honest review and this is mine.
Black Wings is a wonderful first book by new author Iryna Combs. The novel is a fast-paced read of a dystopian world of compromise for the sake of survival of two beings. The Anlights and the Varkins co-exist on earth uneasily through an agreement, and so begins the story. Relationships evolve amid the turmoil of change and betrayal, and horrors of warfare. The story is cast in a very dreary light at one point, but the tenacity and courage of the characters carries it through, and even through the darkest point, redemption cannot be denied. The resolve is very well done and leaves an opening for a possible sequel.
As the Prologue set the stage for the unfolding of this story, I had my doubts I would like it. But then Annabelle's dramatic entrance caught my attention. Soon her backstory was surfacing and I became hooked! Her nightmare existence was haunting and so captivating that I could not tear myself away. The writing style is totally different from the usual storytellers but as refreshing as a summer breeze. The developing character of Annabelle was very interesting and entertaining. The whole concept of these two worlds of the Varkins and Anlights made for a remarkable reading experience.
My favorite genre, Sci-Fi/Fantasy. It's been a while since I have been taken into a world that I can get lost in. Iryna K. Combs gave me that ability. I'm just hoping there will be a sequel. But, if there isn't, I hope that Ms. Combs will continue writing great stories.
A little bit about the story; Annabel the main character/heroine is a pillar of strength but the strength that is defined within. As the story unfolds you will find yourself rooting for her even though she has a world of obstacles. This story is packed with goodies ranging from death, life, love and the pursuit of freedom against tyranny. Highly recommend all you Sci-Fi/Fantasy lovers to read.
I wasn't sure what to expect as I've not read anything from this author before, but I'm glad that I did. I found myself immersed in the world and people/races created by Combs. There are good "people" called Anlights, they are winged and beautiful on the opposite side there are the Varkins very bad "people".
I enjoyed this book very much, it had so much to offer action, good, evil, love, death. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sci-fi fantasy.
I received this book from the author for an honest review.
I normally don’t read science fiction, but this book was recommended to me, so I thought I’d give it a chance. I’m so glad I did. It was excellent! The main character, Annabel, was a strong and likeable heroine. Her character was fully developed, to the point where now I keep thinking about her as a real person. Several times I forgot I was reading science fiction, until something would come up to remind me. The sci-fi parts enhanced the book, where I thought they would be a turnoff for me. I thoroughly enjoyed Black Wings and will keep this author on my list of future books to read.
"Black Wings" compels the reader's attention with its prologue in which a new world of mutated humans is described. In the fantasy world the author creates, the duality of good versus evil reigns and love, hope and good win. The world in which Anlights, winged, human resembling creatures live has a Utopian appeal. The heroine is the epitome of courage, self-sacrifice and beauty and yet, she is readily shows her vulnerabilities and chinks in her armor. A read that is ideal for moments of relaxation with a book.
