Τι γίνεται αν τίποτα στη ζωή σου δεν είναι αυτό που δείχνει;

Biographies can be an absolute drag, so I won’t bore anyone with a long life story.

I was born in Brasilia, Brazil where I spent my childhood and teenage years. After graduating from high school, I moved to the USA where I studied psychology with specialization in criminal behaviour. During my University years I held a variety of odd jobs, ranging from flipping burgers to being part of an all male exotic dancing group.

I worked as a criminal psychologist for several years before moving to Los Angeles, where I swapped the suits and briefcases for ripped jeans, bandanas and an electric guitar. After a spell playing for several well known glam rock bands, I decided to try my luck in London, where I was fortunate enough to have played for a number of famous artists. I toured the world several times as a professional musician.

A few years ago I gave it all up to become a full time writer.

OMG. I was tricked. I was fooled!

Mr. Carter, you are an amazing and remarkable writer. I hope you have a long life writing and doing what you do best.

I thought I was getting a soft, cringey romance with a bit of thriller, and I was like, “I did not sign up for romance and mild smut!” But then the story made a complete 180, and I never saw it coming. I was shocked and actually did a double take. I had to flip back a few pages just to make sure I was still reading the same book. Wow.

Chris Carter, you sly devil, you. I was holding my breath through the last 100 pages. I freaking loved it.

This is a slow burn—a gradual introduction to a variety of characters who ultimately play pivotal roles in a shocking and masterfully woven twist. I can’t even begin to describe how confused, stunned, and amazed I was as the story unfolded. When the backstory was revealed, I was angry and heartbroken. I kept thinking, “Please, let justice prevail. Don’t let the bad people walk away. I want a satisfying ending.”

I won’t spoil anything, but wow. Just… wow.

Chris Carter, you are the best.

I read the ebook because I couldn’t wait, but I cannot wait to get my hands on the paperback. This is one of my favorite reads of 2026—quite possibly one of the best books I’ve ever read.

What a ride! This one just proved that Chris Carter can work his magic even if there are no dead bodies to read from. He gave Hunter and Garcia a bit of a rest (but you can bring them back now, Chris!, pretty please!) and brought Mary to the spotlight. And shine she did!

This is a pure cat-and-mouse engineering that doesn’t give us a moment to breathe until we turn the last page. I was sleepless for a few nights, and last night it was way past 1am (my usual shut-down time is 10.30-ish) when I finished reading. No loose ends, nothing lacks explanation or logic. And pretty much nothing is exactly what it seems.

Did I see the plot twists coming? Yes.
Did this take away from the experience? Absolutely not.

But if you are a fan and if you follow Chris’ work, you know that you will be fooled. That’s the whole point. And he did that masterfully this time.

Can’t wait for the next book that brings us more of Carter’s geniality! The countdown has started!

My Rating: 1⭐ Hide and Seek more like Hide and Sleep!!!

This was such a disappointment, I’ll be honest I was worried when I bought it because the last two Carter books I was a bit meh on, and I didn’t know if it was me, or maybe I had been overlooking something that I just don’t enjoy.

I kept waiting for the moment when it would become the tense psychological thriller I’d been promised. But… It never happened, it was such a cringe and boring read. So my fears were kind of validated way too early on, and I take no pleasure in being right.

The story was so childish, and I mentioned cringe but there were so many moments where I felt embarrassed for who I don’t know… me maybe for reading it. I honestly found it so hard to keep going… I kept looking at the % on my kindle and only 2 or 3 had gone by and I felt like maybe I would give up reading for the rest of my life.

I thought that Mary was one of the most one-dimensional FMC’s I’ve read in ages. Her inner monologue made me want to spew… honestly she sees a “hot dude” and goes Oh Yeah I would like to F*ck him all night long… c’mon. That feels like the kind of thing a 14 year old boy is thinking … it just never felt like a woman was thinking or doing these things… Every aspect of her personality was shallow, clichéd and painfully contrived. She is supposed to be on the run from abusive ex, but finds time to think about getting it on with every hot dude she sees…. Riiiiiight!!

ALSO, those who know me know I do not like sex scenes in general but in thrillers … GTFO of here… the over the top, gross sex in this book was truly enough for me. It added absolutely nothing to the story, and I couldn’t skip fast enough. It felt like it had been thrown in for shock value rather than serving any purpose.

Mary is an idiot of a character, and I know we find out why things weren’t quite adding up …but she’s crass, and just so stupid. You are supposed to be rooting for her, but I found myself hoping that she would get killed off. I should have known when the book blurb said no murder or gore it really meant no excitement just bore!!

Honestly, and here is me a non writer passing judgement, yes cause I am a reader who paid money for this book so, it felt amateurish and under-done. The premise had so much potential, but every interesting idea is squandered in favour of cheap shocks, implausible behaviour and twists that could be seen coming from a mile away.

When I wasn’t actually falling asleep, I was rolling my eyes so hard I thought they weren’t coming back to the front of my head.

By the end I wasn’t shocked, horrified or emotionally invested. I was simply relieved it was over.
An incredibly frustrating read that massively overpromised and spectacularly underdelivered. I genuinely cannot understand the glowing reviews for this one.

I suspect many people will love this and I will be out by myself on outlier Island yet again… but I have read RomComs with less cringe and to me thats saying something.

Chris Carter, You did it again!

This book was a hot mess. But I'll mention the too positives first: the chapters are short and easy two read, and if you can make it their, the final 100 pages are actually exciting.

See how I made three typos in the sentence above? 'Too', 'Two', 'Their'? That happened throughout this book which was filled with typos, bad grammar, and odd sentence structures. I can usually overlook a typo or two but they affected my enjoyment massively because there were so many. Which begs the question... was this book even edited?

The book is too long and very slow until the final 100 pages. At times it tried to be a legal thriller, then a cat-and-mouse chase, then a smutty romance and then a horror. I was bored and started to think of things that could happen and I ended up guessing all of the things that happened in the end bar a few details.

I would not recommend this book.

"People only see the decisions you make, not the choices we you are given...".

Alexa, play “Cowboy Like Me” by Taylor Swift.

I honestly don’t think I’ve ever been this completely blindsided this many times while reading a book. Top tier absolutely immaculate vibes.

I love everything Chris Carter writes. I would literally read his grocery list. Someone should probably check on him though to make sure he’s ok.

Love it!

Mijn advies? Lees het gewoon. Echt.

It feels illegal to give Chris Carter anything other than a five ⭐️, however, this book was so annoying. It was a blend of two other books I’ve read and I was hoping the ending would make up for it, it didn’t.

I am sadly disappointed in this one. The big twist I saw, coming a mile away, and then the ending was also subpar. Sigh.

Five huuuge stars from me!
This is a brilliant psychological thriller that I’d highly recommend.
It’s a bit of a slower pace to the Robert Hunter series but but when you finish it, you will understand why.
I won’t say anymore as I really don’t want to spoil it.

Chris Carter could pretty much write anything at this point, I think, and I'd love it. I was a bit disappointed when it was announced that this year's publication would be a standalone rather than a Hunter & Garcia, my favourite literary detective pair. This one is also slightly slower out of the blocks than your classic Chris Carter, which had me going "mmm" for a bit, but then it takes off and then it was a case of spanner after spanner being thrown at the reader. Every time I thought I caught an inkling of what was going on, something happened to show that I was very much incorrect, and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough in the second half of the book.

The thing I love the most about Chris Carter's books, although this only becomes obvious later one, that, as weird as this sounds, . As such, he's one of the few gruesome/thriller authors that makes me cry when reading, which is a weird combination but to me, sign of a really good book! This one will probably stay with me a long time, the same way Genesis (my favourite of the Hunter & Garcias) has.

That aside, the unpredictability of this one was honestly simply genius. I knew from the offset that .

Well done Chris, you've certainly got me out of my reading slump, got through this in just two sittings! Now what to read next...

30/07/2026 dnf 45% into the audiobook - I'm bored, literally Mary is such a one-dimensional character, who seems to constantly attract all these men just because she is stunning, yet at the same time she is still on the run. Then, pretty much 35/40% into the story she meets a rich guy who seems to be able to solve all her problems, and they both have super attractive bodies... I want to cry because I was so excited for Chris Carter to put something new out and I didn't mind at first that it wasn't another Robert Hunter book, but I miss the gore, I miss Hunter and Garcia, and I miss a fast-paced plot that follows the LAPD, the victims, and the serial killer. Like give me some horrifying excitement, because this isn't it, like a cat and mouse game sounds entertaining but this one is too slow paced.

As a fan of the Robert Hunter books I went into this story knowing it was a completely unrelated standalone but hoped for some fast paced story. It wasn't fast paced, in fact the pacing of this book was one the things that made it less enjoyable to me. Very slow in the beginning and really up to almost 45% of story. Then the first big twist happens and when you think it's going to pick up, it doesn't. It's only on maybe the last 20% to 25% of the book that it becomes an actual rollercoaster.
A cat and mouse story where no one is who we think they are with a love story in the middle. Con artists, fake relationships, murders, everything is unrealiable until literally the end.
There are no loose ends but you really have to go on a "suspension of disbelief" on this one.

Went into this with high expectations as love the Hunter series and overall it lived up to expectations

As always the characters are well written and the twists were well done.

Could have done worn some of the middle parts being shortened and if lost pace slightly in the middle but the last 100-150 pages really made up for that and the slower burn really played off.

A great first thriller for Chris Carter I hope he does more

5 stars!!! A brilliant book from my favourite author - his only stand alone novel to date, this was a fantastic read full of twists and turns. I thought I’d miss the usual format of Chris’s Robert Hunter series, but once the story got going, I never thought anything other than “this is genius!”. I’ve been reading Chris Carter’s books since 2013 and he never disappoints. He is one of the very few writers I would buy the book of without even reading the blurb beforehand, he is that good. Hide And Seek delivered everything and more, very clever story telling from an amazing author. This has been my favourite book of 2026.
