At first, moving east appears an inspired decision for Troy. But things take a disastrous turn. He inadvertently becomes embroiled in a debauched adventure, involving the players and oddballs of Hong Kong's cocaine underworld … and a police informant against his will.
Like many an expat, Troy arrives in Hong Kong bright-eyed and bushy tailed, taken aback by the kaleidoscopic culture on offer - the hectic neon, exotic food, crazy night life, mad characters and challenging language. However, his lowly role as a humble English teacher takes a very different turn after he gets arrested for possession of a hefty amount of cocaine in a nightclub. Faced with a lengthy prison term in a cockroach-infested slammer - or could it be the death penalty? - our self-effacing protagonist has no choice but to pay for his freedom by working as a police informant. In the hilarious tale that follows,Troy juggles his work, personal and party life with cops, drug dealers and triads, attempting to outsmart the latter in an ever-complicated web of deceit.
Andy Carter is probably the humblest yet funniest and most observant author I have read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to everyone - except for my mate Barry, who is an idiot.

I won this book through a Facebook competition and I am so glad I did as i really enjoyed reading about the life and exploits of Troy and his friends after his relocation to Hong Kong. I smiled all the way through, some of the escapades Troy encountered were so funny, one particular story that had me laughing was the Jackie Chan "who am I?" game....so funny! But then there were lots of funny little episodes! The book is written in such a way to make you want to keep on reading its quite addictive. Troy is a great character and Andrew Carter has done a fab job in developing him! I've never read comedy fiction before and would easily read more. Thank you Andrew for my signed copy, I would happily recommend this book to others.
I won this book through the Goodreads giveaway. This book was both thrilling and exciting with a bit of British humour thrown in. Highly recommended. I must praise Andrew Carter I could not put this book down. A fabulous book by a British author. OUTSTANDING!!!!!
I received this book direct from the author, Andrew Carter and am happy to report that I found the novel both an interesting and enjoyable read. It was a pleasure to visit parts of Hong Kong, through the eyes of the author and to follow the adventures of the main protagonist, an expat. Troy from Leeds in highs and lows in employment, and an on and off love life with an added taste of the Chinese drug World. The storyline was likeable with moments of humour and an easy read. Well worth the read. Huge congratulations to Andrew Carter with his first novel.
First couldn't stop laughing/scoffing incredulously after every sentence - did he really just write that? Did he really just use 18 adjectives in that sentence? I almost quit two pages in, but pushed through and happy I did because being in Hong Kong while reading it was fun and the story gets more entertaining though never impressive. The guy's trying, just not that hard
Perhaps dictated while on a treadmill, no prose or insight to impress, I was underwhelmed. I was, however entertained while I waited for computer updates.
Alright for a short read (I bought the kindle version for a flight) I found it hard to like the protagonist although did like the quirky humour. Gets caught doing coke in toilet and decides to become a grass to save his own skin. (Fiction)
