Discover how it all began in this explosive prequel to Trial Run . . .
There isn't much that can throw Charlie Hazard off balance. But the mystery woman with the striking eyes and the intense request to follow her--now--just might accomplish it. Knowing little more than her beautiful name, Charlie leaves his post as a guard at the Satellite Beach community center for what he thinks is just another risk-containment job.
But Gabriella, an experimental psychologist, has far more in store for him than protection duty--if the two of them survive the test.
Leave behind your perceptions of what is possible and race into the unknown corridors of human consciousness in this breakneck prequel to Thomas Locke's Trial Run.

This was a quick read, but it definitely held my interest and makes me eager to read the first book in this series when I can. I found the story to be WAY different than I expected and, while I'm still a little confused as to what is all really going on, I think the next book is going to be even better...at least I hope so. ;)
*Did not get this for review. Kindle freebie. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.*
Though just a short story, "Double Edge" packs a punch. It offers a taste of the mysterious, a world of science beyond what the average citizen could ever guess. It is believable science fiction in the same way that Crichton's Jurassic Park is believable--something close to our world that we could almost imagine is true. Perhaps someone IS developing these mysterious psychological processes, hidden behind closed doors, preparing to test on ordinary people . . . but will it be for good or evil?
Something about the flavor of the story put me in mind of the film Paycheck starring Ben Affleck - those who enjoy that sort of tale will find this story most appealing. It gives us a taste of what is to come yet gives little away, hooking the reader and leaving them hungry for answers. It sets up Locke's novel Trial Run beautifully.
Having read Trial Run, I was pleased Locke released a prequel to the novel. While it is always nice to get more backstory on well-written characters, Double Edge stands on its own as a good, albeit short, tale. When you are reading Trial Run, you wonder about the romantic tension between Charlie and Gabriella and Double Edge pulls back the curtain on when they met and why things evolved how they did. Locke description of south Florida evokes memories of Miami Vice and Burn Notice, and his emphasis on solid character development draws the reader into the Fault Lines series well. I am looking forward to book 2 in the series.
This precursor into the Fault Lines series was completely spellbinding! I can't say much without giving spoilers, so I'll just say that this quick-read prequel is a must in my book. I was completely riveted, and I think any other reader would be, too! This book put Thomas Locke onto a whole new plane of writing and far exceeded my expectations!

Kinda weird, kinda neat. Science fiction usually isn't my thing, but this wasn't too bad. A little short and confusing and not really what I would consider Christian fiction. Very brief mention of a church at the beginning, but that's it.
I haven't read much in the techno-thriller genre but this series sounds very interesting. I enjoyed the prequel. It served it's purpose - I'm ready to read more. I recommend the book.
I knew this was going to be a short, quick read but it still felt incomplete to me.
The pacing was fast but the world building wasn't very developed at all. There was no information given about what the experiments are for, who created them, the technology used etc.
There wasn't a lot of character development so all I know about Charlie is that he has great instincts, reacts well to dangerous situations and will follow a beautiful women and do whatever she asks without hesitation.
The author clearly wanted details left out to make things more mysterious but it actually made me feel frustrated because everytime Charlie had a question, he was met with "I can't answer that yet", "you will find out later", "that isn't something you need to know right now" or something similar, but he's never given the answers.
The synopsis didn't match up with what the book was about either so in the end, I felt unsatisfied.
From what I can tell, Double Edge is just the first four chapters of Fault Lines, with slightly different wording in some places. I discovered this accidentally while checking to see how many pages Double Edge is, since I'll be done reading Fault Lines soon. I'm guessing that the author originally wrote Double Edge just to be a short prequel to tell how the main characters in Trial Run first met, and then expanded it into a full book later. If you're considering reading the series, but you're not sure about it, reading Double Edge might be helpful. But since Fault Lines has been published now, I recommend just reading that instead.
This Kindle ebook was supposedly free but is more of a long preview than a full book. Well-written, good storyline, strong, well developed characters. Seems to be about astral travelling and hypnosis (from the little I could glean) mixed with some bloody action involving bikers. I would've given it 5 stars but it's a serial type novel with a cliffhanger.
Join Gabriella & Charlie Hazard as they enter an experimental world of psychological testing. They are both in danger & this adventure leaves you wondering where the danger is coming from. Seems Charlie was a decent bodyguard was innocently snatched up to protect secrets.
Very mysterious prequel to Trial Run. Buy this one makes you want to read the next book! The author has a way with words and really piques your interest to read about this unusual topic of psychology!
As a real-life scientist, I enjoy stories such as this. I think this story is a fictional version of real-world autdio therapy, but in this story, test patient was given a placebo. Interesting story!
I read Fault Lines first and I was hoping for a little more back story about why the team chose to bring in Charlie thinking this would be a prequel. However, everything was merely a repeat of the first few chapters of Fault Lines. Honestly, it's completely skippable.
This seems like a teaser for a full length book or book series. It is not the full story but this short bit that is on offer was an intriguing enticement. However, it wasn't enough to get me to buy the book(s) at this time.
"Your turning comes very soon. Right or left. You must choose between the safety of your current life and the risk of a complete unknown."
Charlie, a community center guard, has little idea what he may be in for when he answers the request of a beautiful experimental psychologist, Gabriella. The request is simple--"Will you come with me?"--but it will lead to a test with untold implications on human consciousness itself in Double Edge, the prequel to the Fault Lines series by author Thomas Locke.
And, just like that, I've taken my first step into the realm of techno-thrillers.
I've known for a long enough time that I would eventually read some fiction by Locke, which is a pseudonym for one of my all-time favorite ChristFic authors, Davis Bunn. And while I was aware that some of Locke's titles are fantasy novels, I wasn't sure what genre the Fault Lines books would fall under. I had to look it up after finishing this prequel.
A techno-thriller. Got it.
There's action and intrigue in this read, to be sure. Danger and a mysterious experimental journey. I don't understand it all, I might be a little more familiar with some of it than I'd care to elaborate on, and overall, I don't trust it.
But if I did trust it, it would probably indicate that the material here is too easy. Too easy and predictable, for me. Hence, because I don't trust it, I plan on continuing the series.
I just finished this psychological neuroscience thriller and I can't wait to read more! Thank goodness this short story is just the prequel to Thomas Locke's new book, Trial Run, which is waiting on my bedside table. (Is it bedtime yet? Please say yes so I can go read it!)
I am a complete nerd when it comes to brain science and this story has got me reading as fast as I can. The characters are diverse and interesting and are leaving me with a dozen questions I hope are answered in Trial Run. If you are at all interested in what might happen the more we learn about how to manipulate the brain, you've got to try this short story! I think you're gonna love it!!
Charlie Hazard goes along with Gabriella way to easily for a man who works in a risk-containment job. Even with that I feel that I would like to learn more about him. He is also VERY aware of what is going on around him.
The ideas put forth in this short story about human consciousness are very far-fetched and therefore they make for a very unusual story. I was captivated by the completely imaginative sequence of events. I would love to know how the author came up with the idea for this story/series.
This is a prequel to the book Trial Run by: Thomas Locke. In the aforementioned novel we meet a team of interesting researchers, and their head of security, Charlie Hazard.
Double Edge is the story of how Charlie became involved with their unique area of research.
With a story this short I won't say more because anything else would be a spoiler. But it is free on Google play and it will keep you entertained fora half hour at least.
We are again in the modern CBA universe--where all you have to be is clean. What a waste of a wonderful writing talent. I know it's just a teaser, and a masterful execution it is. But there's no redeeming merit. Maybe in the actual series there will be, but I'll be surprised.
Tried to read Trial Run but could not get into it due to the opening of kidnapping kids with irrational justification, Double Edge is the prequel and may explain the large disconnect to logic that occurs in Trial Run....
Double Edge is currently a free kindle book on Amazon, I have not read it yet. Just a short free teaser to expensive series ...
