This is my second Iris Bromige novel, but it feels a bit like I just read the first book over again. The names and plot details are different, of course, but the characters are basically the same. In both cases, soft-hearted, unworldly (at least in the hero's estimation) heroine is reeling from a failed romance; strong, uncompromising hero is determined to make her face reality. Romance ensues, but hero never quite believes heroine is over previous romance and consequently behaves like an ass. In both cases I enjoyed the book and thought it was well-written but was not completely sold on the hero (although in this book, I'll grant he had reason to be exasperated with her behavior however ill-judged his response). Despite that minor (major?) dissatisfaction, I'm glad I stumbled across Bromige's novels.

From back cover:
THE OUTCAST OF THE FAMILY
When Bridget was a child, her widowed mother married into the wealthy and tightly knit Rainwood family. But Bridget always felt apart from the Rainwoods and remained silently on the fringes, dreaming away her time-dreaming of marriage to her childhood friend Felix.

And then her world crumbled-Felix married Susan Rainwood-and Bridget would have to forget him. But the Rainwoods would not let her forget him-they insinuated, spread rumors, and finally accused her of an illicit liaison.
