Rate this book
Bouncing has always been a way of life for Alex Dalton. The former basketball star and new coach likes to keep life simple, bouncing from woman to woman, with no responsibilities and no complications. Then a summer fling opens her eyes to other possibilities, and now Alex wonders if a relationship might be what she really needs. There is an instant attraction to her new assistant coach, Britain Dodge, but for some reason, Brit wants nothing to do with Alex. Then a spontaneous kiss under the stars forces them to admit their feelings and work on their issues. Their love grows, but so do the outside pressures that influence them, and they have to decide if they should forfeit their love or play until the final buzzer.

Jaime Maddox grew up on the banks of the Susquehanna River in Northeastern Pennsylvania. As the baby in a family of many children, she was part adored and part ignored, forcing her to find creative ways to fill her time. Her childhood was idyllic, spent hiking, rafting, biking, climbing, and otherwise skinning knees and knuckles. Reading and writing became passions. Although she left home for a brief stint in the big cities of Philadelphia, PA, and Newark, NJ, as soon as she acquired the required paperwork—a medical degree and residency certificate—she came running back.

She fills her hours with a bustling medical practice, two precocious sons, a disobedient dog, and an extraordinary woman who helps her to keep it all together. In her abundant spare time, she reads, writes, twists her body into punishing yoga poses, and whacks golf balls deep into forests. She detests airplanes, snakes, and people who aren’t nice. Her loves are the foods of the world, Broadway musicals, traveling, sandy beaches, massages and pedicures, and the Philadelphia Phillies. (from the publisher's website)

I was really excited when I saw this book hit Netgalley. I've been dying for a F/F book, but this one missed the mark for me.

It wasn't a long read but sadly it felt like it was. I know that the romance genre is full of tropes, but each author has to make it their own, and I don't think it happened here. The book didn't stand out.

I wish the author luck in her future books and wouldn't not recommend this book to other readers. We all love different things. 2.5 Stars.

More romance than anything else, but a peppering of homophobia, a bit of thrilling thrown in (Aaah! so there was some point to the pupil strand) go with it & enjoy.

this was a bit difficult getting thru because of the topics from the start, thought this was all about basketball but then after reading it then hit me that it was all about someone being a lothario, can't commit to relationships, love, don't know how to deal with ones feelings plus lots of other issues..then there was drugs, gambling and school cheating...another thing it was too much detail and dialogue going on, kinda had me a bit on the bore side, the writing could have been better but i'm not a novelist :) i'm here to give my critique, and what's up with this mix of Germany/Russian "Anke"..i was a bit thrown off by this one time thingie that Alex mention, was confusing...try again next book

I enjoyed this romance very much. It was my first book from Jamie Maddox.

I liked the flow of the story, the slow building romance between the main characters. I also liked the side story, but it could have been a little less about the gambling thing, about P.J. But nevertheless the gambling story was a nice addition to the romance.

The romance itself was slowly building with loveable but also different characters. The relationship was realistic, including the lack of communication, when they crashed. It’s like often in reality, so many problems could be solved with more and honest communication.

I would have loved a little more about the basketball season, but that’s because I’m a sport fan.

Overall a really nice read. 3,5 stars from me.

3 1/2 Stars. This is the first Jamie Maddox book I have read and I really enjoyed it! It was a good solid romance. I liked how the characters took things slow, dated, and had a realistic relationship. It wasn't just a first time meet-have sex then U-haul which seems to be common in a lot of romances lately. Both characters were likable and you believed they were in love.
There was a secondary character POV which I didn't care for. You can understand why the author did this as that story-line converges with the main characters. I just think she could have shortened this or went about it a different way, as the secondary character and his story-line was not likable. Also, the main conflict between the primary couple was really just lack of communication. I don't like when authors to do that. Either give them some real conflict to break up over or have them stay together and work things out. If Jamie would have changed the conflict and the secondary POV, I would have given this 4 to 5 Stars.

3.5 stars. I enjoyed this and appreciated the unique premise. The mystery subplot that runs parallel to the romance story line was interesting, but when the two plots met and tried to intertwine, it didn’t quite work. The ending was rushed and characters didn’t get an opportunity to experience the full range of emotions that seemed likely.

When I read the blurb I thought this was going to be a book focused on basketball but found that the basketball was more of the backdrop to the main plot of the romance and the gambling drama. I enjoyed the two characters they were likeable and provided diversity in their backgrounds which I really enjoyed. Alex comes from a family that accepts her sexuality to Britain that has a religious family who would not be as accepting about her sexuality. At times I did find both characters making odd decisions to affect the plot that in my view weren't very believable.

It took me a little longer than normal to get into the book as the start went a bit slower than I would have liked. There was also a side story that jumps in on occasions that confused me as to where it fit into the plot of the book. You don’t find out how the two plots join together till about 70% of the way into the book. This was frustrating at times as I would be starting to get into the main plot and then it would jump to the secondary plot, which in my view broke some of the tension being built up in the main plot. I understand by the end why the author had the secondary plot but am not 100% convinced that the amount of time spent building this plot up was worth it. I felt that she could have gotten this message across without so much time spent on that story.

Overall the book was an enjoyable enough read and one that brought a variety of story lines for you to follow. I would recommend the book but don’t expect an amazing read. For me it was a one-time read only.

I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review.

I wanted to like this so much more than I did. I loved the premise of a basketball coach and assistant coach falling in love. There were two major problems for me though: the major conflict could have been resolved with a fully honest conversation (one of my biggest story pet peeves), and the gambling thing. I get that it sets up the conflict, but I really didn't need PJ's perspective.

There is a positively delicious abundance of story lines, characters, and upbeat and/or intense elements in this book. What a treat! Plus it all felt so magnificently expansive and yet beautifully intimate. Even the third-tier characters and their intricacies feel so alive and multidimensional. This is simply a tour de force and I feel it should not be missed. Superbly wonderful!

Alex Dalton is an imposingly integrated person and a genuine femme fatale, plus a blistering force on the sports playing fields of her choice. Unbeknownst to just a few, she struggles with an insidious health issue that appears to be a difficult and traumatic undercurrent coloring all the facets in her intricate inner world and outer persona. Frankly, Alex is a mind blowing person to observe, to commiserate with, and to grasp how she so artfully wows everyone and anyone who crosses her path. Yet she is by and large comfortable in her skin, an out lesbian who revels in the glory of her summers spent in a very rainbow-colored community, and an emotional powerhouse that I sense is lovingly supported by one of the most endearing families I have ever had the pleasure to get to know. Towering and shining beacon!

Britain Dodge, who mostly goes by Brit, is a treasure. Besides being stunningly attractive in appearance, she is above and beyond loving and caring. She comes from a very close-knit, but unfortunately ultraconservative catholic family. That puts Brit somewhat behind the eight ball, because she cannot allow her lesbianism to be universally known. Nevertheless, a fortuitous introduction at a low-key yet lovely dinner engagement has Brit meeting and nearly instantaneously falling for Alex. This not so little tension-filled plot line weaves in and out and up and down more often than I would have expected. However, Alex is sensitive to Brit's needs and Brit is above and beyond sensitive to her family's point of view. In the long run, Brit needs to grow up, take control of her life, while considering to the best of her capability her family's point of view. The blossoming of Brit on so many fronts is unquestionably one of the tenderest scenarios within a cornucopia of incredibly delectable threads. Impressively alluring!

By the way, there is an awesome sub-plot involving a young man caught in a vicious web that eventually creates a near crisis flare-up between Alex and Brit. I did mention how amazingly rich this story is and how much that fuels my heightened enthusiasm for this book. I believe it is not to be missed. In fact, it probably needs to be savored multiple times to unearth all the gems included within. Exquisitely complete!

Really liked this book!

At first, I thought the development of the PJ character was distracting but as the storyline flowed, it all gelled well. Really liked the story. Well done!

I was after sports fiction, and this fit the bill. Would have liked a bit more sports, but still an interesting read with engaging characters.
