Of Thieves and Tombs #1

A Thief Among Fae

Rate this book
She’s the key to the cursed tomb that can save his people. He’s the prince who promises her the ultimate treasure—but only if she binds her soul to his own.

Cynthia's magic is only good for one thing: raiding deadly tombs.

Desperate to buy a better future for her ailing sister, Cynthia enters a soul-binding bargain with a frustratingly handsome fae prince. Her task? Help him break into a king’s cursed tomb for the heist of a lifetime.

But allying with Desmond puts Cynthia in the crosshairs of his blood-soaked past. He’s scorned by his own kingdom, hunted by assassins, and infuriatingly sarcastic. Cynthia despises him—except he sees potential in her magic that she’s never dared to see in herself.

What Cynthia doesn’t know is that Desmond is a necromancer, a power forbidden by the gods, and he’ll do anything to free his people. Crossing him will cost her life, but the irresistible pull between them might cost her heart.

A Thief Among Fae is the start of a slow-burn fantasy romance series, packed with sword fights, perilous adventures, and a dash of necromancy. Perfect for fans of Skyrim and daring heroines like Lara Croft.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Thief Among Fae
Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. 🤍
This had such a fun and unique concept, and there were definitely elements I really enjoyed, but ultimately it just fell a little short for me.
One of my favourite parts was the Phantom family and the whole thieves’ guild dynamic. There are so many different personalities within the group, and I loved watching them interact. Their banter was easily one of the highlights for me, and I really enjoyed the gradual development of trust within the group.
I also loved how much mystery was woven throughout the story. There were constantly questions surrounding Desmond, his powers, his motivations and what everyone was really after, and that intrigue was probably what kept me turning the pages the most. I genuinely wanted to know how everything was going to come together.
Unfortunately, I never developed the emotional connection to the characters that I wanted. Even when bigger or more emotional moments happened, I didn’t feel as invested in them as I should have been.
The world-building was probably my biggest struggle. We’re thrown into a world filled with Fae, humans, goblins, orcs, different territories and locations, but I never felt like the world itself was properly established. There were so many places mentioned that I struggled to picture where everyone was or how everything connected. A map would have been AMAZING and, for me, would have made such a difference.
I think those two things really went hand in hand. Because I couldn’t fully connect with the world, and I didn’t develop that deeper connection with the characters either, I never became completely immersed in the story.
There was a lot here that I liked, the Phantom family, the banter, the different personalities, the adventure and especially all of the mystery but I just needed more depth from both the world and the characters to really fall in love with it.

"Nothing is worth so much to me that I wouldn't destroy it to keep you safe."

This story was such a fun adventure mixed with tomb raiding, fae, dangerous magic, and a soul-binding bargain. It immediately grabbed my attention, and I was intrigued to see how it would continue. The FMC was definitely one of my favorite parts of the story. I enjoyed watching her grow throughout the storyline. I also really enjoyed the banter she had with the MMC. I did find the pacing slow in a few places and at times found it hard to connect to some of the characters but overall, I found this to be a really solid debut with adventure, found family, and a lot of potential.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A love letter to classic fantasy RPGs, complete with an epic quest, a party of adventurers, and one broody fae prince with a surprisingly soft side.

I loved this book so much. It has that classic fantasy RPG feeling, with just enough romance woven through it to make my romantasy-loving heart happy. The author’s inspiration from Skyrim is completely relatable to me because the world is incredibly rich and detailed, the kind of place I could happily get lost in.

Watching Cynthia go from a seemingly useless beginner to a powerful woman was one of my favourite parts. Seeing her find the courage to walk her own path, follow her heart, and embrace her destiny was such a joy to read.

And then there is Desmond Vale, the broody, bookish fae prince who is apparently a cinnamon roll where Cynthia is concerned, despite being commonly known as the Prince of Death. Naturally, he comes with a dark past and plenty of secrets of his own. He smells of cedar and sandalwood, or sometimes rain, and his favourite drink is peppermint tea. A terrifying reputation, a tragic past, and peppermint tea. What a deathly combination!

I loved every single member of this band of adventurers. The twists were perfectly timed, the story never dragged, and I was completely invested in their journey.

I cannot wait for the sequel to let me spend more hours with all of them! Even Rune!

I received an ARC of A Thief Among Fae, and this was a five-star read for me.

I really enjoyed Cynthia and Desmond as the main characters, and I also found myself getting attached to several of the side characters along the way. The romance was enjoyable, and I liked how it developed alongside the adventure rather than overwhelming the rest of the story.

There were also some great twists and turns that kept things interesting, especially as more was revealed about the characters, their magic, and the dangers surrounding them.

Overall, I had a great time reading this one. It had romance, adventure, interesting characters, and enough surprises to keep me wanting to know what happened next.

I received an advance review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

It’s giving a d&d campaign based off the mummy + national treasure. There’s so many layers to this & I loved it. Angst, yearning, guilt, loyalty, dreams, the absolute slowest of burns… delicious. The pacing in the first 50% was a little drawn out but I can’t wait to get my hands on the second book!

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. A Thief Among Fae is a fast-paced, high stakes adventure and a good time almost from chapter one.

I found it hard to put this book down once I started. A lot of books lately have claimed to be "Tomb Raider" inspired but fall a bit short of expectation. In my opinion, this one lives up to the hype.

We're raiding tombs before the 5% mark, and it's both exhilarating and fascinating. I loved how this first scene easily introduces the reader to how complex magic wielding works in this world, as we get to see both the main female character, Cynthia, and her sister use their abilities to survive a harrowing raid that involves underwater caverns and clever monsters.

Cynthia was a likable, relatable FMC. I often felt strongly for her and the position she found herself in, an eldest daughter with high expectations placed upon her by her poverty-stricken family who had little understanding of and compassion for Cynthia's own hopes and dreams. She had good character growth throughout the book, gaining in self-confidence in her magic and her place in the world.

Desmond, the MMC, was an interesting character, at once both hot and cold in his personality, with a layer of mysteriousness that kept me wondering about the secrets he was holding.

The banter between these two was perfection, especially in the first half of the book. Their growing understanding of each other felt sweet and natural, but this was the slowest of slow burns, almost to the point of frustration. Haha!

There were many memorable side characters in this book, especially in the "thieves guild," but I was particularly fascinated with the rather terrifying and strange Min and her monotone way of speaking. I'd love to know more of her story!

Outside of the strange magic, the even stranger different species in this book set it a part from others. It felt a little like the movie The Fifth Element. With the turn of every page, there was something or someone intriguing to learn about! This world and character descriptions were rich in detail, but never felt overwhelming.

The stakes were high, the action scenes well done; there was such a variety of them, that I never felt bored. I appreciated that the ending didn't leave me in emotional turmoil but instead excited to see what adventures will unfold in book two.

If you like books with full-speed ahead plots that are a mystery to unravel, mature characters with depth, a slow burn yearn so slooow as to be painful and a variety of heart-pounding adventures, you'll likely have as good a time with this book as I did.

Thank you to the author for sharing an advanced reader copy of this book with me. This review is my honest opinion, and I'm leaving it voluntarily.

Thank you to Maddy for the ARC of this. I loved it. It was a fun mix of fantasy RPG style, with tomb raider elements and witty banter, and still a rollercoaster of emotions too.

The world building was fun and useful without being too much to soak in and it didn't take away from the story itself. The characters were interesting, each with their own unique backstory and their own personalities that worked well together. The magic system was a lot of fun to learn about all the 'gifts' characters had. And there was plenty of intrigue and secrets that just added more to the story.

Highly recommend this and can't wait for book 2.

Thank you to Maddy Calder for this advanced read. My experience and feedback are my own.

Wow, what a ride! I enjoyed this so much. Fans of Tomb Raider will love the FMC, Cynthia. Really the whole vibe of this book but I dare say this takes it up a notch. Yes, I said it. And I am here for it.

Cynthia is a farmer with her family out of necessity, is also a tomb raider with a gift of her own unique magic who longs for adventure & freedom. Feisty which I loved! She meets Desmond, MMC, a.k.a. the fae prince who also happens to be a necromancer with secrets. Necromancers is a hereditary gift but one that is outlawed. In her effort to help her sick sister she enters into a soul-binding bargain with Desmond to break into the King's cursed tomb for the biggest heist. He concedes one item will be his and the rest she can have that will help her family tremendously and her. Of course, there is more to it but you will need to read it to enjoy the ride. Notable side characters are charmers too. You may sway from dislike to love. Had me feeling all the feels.

Add in magical creatures, epic world-building, delicious and humorous banter, slow-burn of the slowest degree with a very satisfying payoff, thieves guild/found family, one bed, one horse, puzzles, adventure and a plot that is very well-balanced with the romance aspect and this is one epic tale. Intrigued yet? Don't answer that because I know you must be. This is an epic read with lots of twists that will leave you wanting more.

"Or I avoid dancing because books make better conversation than people." "Most people."

A high fae prince. A walking, smirking trove of secrets. A vow. An undoing.

Cedar and sandalwood. Peppermint tea.

Thank you to the autor for providing me with an ARC copy

This was my first experience as ARC reader and I could have never hoped for something better.

"A thief among fae" (let's call it ATAF, like the author does) has got everything I have learnt I love.
Tomb Raider+Skyrime vibes were the first thing that made me stop by and have a closer look.
You are immediately drawn into the story. You come to know how the world works very naturally, like you're walking alongside the characters, which is something that makes me feel really into it. The more you go on, the more you understand about Gifts, the war between Avendor and the Hollowlands and its outcomes.

The story goes on smooth - it's gripping and you wish to have the time to go on reading 'till the end. I started screaming and kicking my feet at chapter 3 and I have basically never stopped - this gives you the measure of how much I have liked this journey.

The chatacters are simply amazing.
Finally, a walking green flag MMC. Desmond, the Fae Prince, has everything I like in a male character: he's handsome, yearning, sarcastic, brooding, sweet as hell. And, yes, he's frustrating when he seems to let go and then...

But who I really adore is Cynthia, the FMC. She's the main character I was looking for in romantasy.
It's been so easy for me to relate to her and this made me care more and more - I truly felt inside the story and this is the feeling I look for in a book, what makes it great to me.
A part from the Gift she has (an Average Gift), like everyone in Avendor, she's perfectly human, I'd say normal, in the best way possible.
She is not proficient with daggers or swords, she doesn't have a perfect aim, she is not a super quick learner. She needs real training, she doesn't necessarily perform under pressure and she fails - thank you! This is real, this is what I have ever dreamed to find in a fantasy lately - a main character that sometimes fails!
Cynthia is real.
And so are the dynamics within her family.

The feeling of belonging somewhere else and the evolving relationships with the other characters build that found family trope that I am appreciating more and more.

In one word: amazing!
I can't wait for the second book!

What a refreshing and exciting debut novel! This book sucked me in from the start, I was immediately drawn to Cynthia the FMC, and the unique magic system in the book. There is plenty of adventure and action. Found family, the slowest of slow burns, political turmoil, magic, mystery and intrigue fill the book. It was enjoyable start to finish with twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end. Can’t wait for book 2!

There could have been some better explanations of the magic gifts, and some more world building could have eased some confusions I had throughout the book, but it will be part of a series so that may be coming in book 2! My only real complaint is that there wasn’t a map and we moved around a lot throughout the story so at times a map could have been really helpful.

This book has a little bit of everything that makes it a great fantasy read!

The cast of characters in A Thief Among Fae is rather diverse. There is a character for everyone in this book. They will make you chuckle and even blush at times with their witty banter. This book is very adventure heavy and is a refreshing change of pace from current popular picks from this genre. I did feel like the story dragged a little and the connection between the FMC and MMC could have been deeper and more captivating and consistent. But overall this book is really fun and will make you want to raid some tombs!

I had such a fun time with this book. I am a huge fan of Skyrim and this brought a lot of the charm and adventure that I love into an exciting story. The banter between the characters was my absolute favorite and brought them to life for me. The world building had a few moments that were a bit confusing and I struggled to keep track of things, but otherwise this was a great time and I really enjoyed my time spent with these characters.

Thank you so much to the author for the early copy. I had such a foot kicking good time. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This was such a fun, easy read that completely pulled me in! I found myself wanting to keep reading even when I really needed to go to bed.
I loved the combination of fantasy and romance in this book. The plot was intriguing, and I really enjoyed watching the characters develop throughout the story. The relationship development was especially one of my favorite parts. It felt like there was enough buildup to keep me invested, eagerly reading for the “fuck it” moment and loved watching the growth of characters and relationship dynamics.
The fantasy elements, romance, character development, and overall plot worked so well together and made this a book that was genuinely hard to put down. If you love a good fantasy romance, I definitely think this one is worth picking up!
And now I NEED the second book like yesterday. I cannot wait to see where the story goes from here!
Thank you to author/publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC. I hope to be apart of the next one!

I like to thank the author for allowing me on her ARC team for this book.

I really want to rate this higher, but I think it will be one of those series that time (or by second book) if I choose to continue on with it. It's not that it's a bad book, it just feels... half-baked. Too much focus on the relationship or the will they / won't they between the exiled fae prince and the girl with powers she isn't sure what to do with.

While some could argue world building is present, it is... and it isn't. The magic is focused on more than the state of the lands, the monarchy, the overall political empire.

I liked the characters, but sometimes they too felt as you didn't really get a lot of depth with them. Especially by the end of the book, I kind of wanted more understandings of the prince and the sister.

The parts that were fun were when the entire team of 'fortune hunters' were working together.

I'll give it to book two and see how the author expands upon the world building, but if it's not much and it's as it was before, I'll bounce.

DNF - 50%

Aaaaah, this is such a frustrating DNF because there is SO much I loved about this book!!

The premise immediately grabbed me. Tomb raiding is something I don’t think I’ve ever encountered in a fantasy book before, and I absolutely loved the idea of a world built around different guilds, especially the thieves’ guild. The worldbuilding is one of the strongest aspects of the story: there are different species and types of magic, a past war that set several events into motion, secrets, possible curses, and so much history and structure that I constantly found myself wanting to know more.

I also really enjoyed the character dynamics. The sister bond, the found family within the guild, and the characters who may or may not be trustworthy were all things I was genuinely invested in. I particularly liked the conflict between the FMC’s desire to travel and discover the world and her family’s expectations of her, as well as the hints of trauma underneath it all.

But unfortunately, I struggled to connect with the FMC on an emotional level.

This is especially frustrating because I don’t think the book fails to explore emotions. There are moments where I thought the emotional characterization worked really well. For example, when the FMC steals a necklace from the living rather than the dead, her guilt is beautifully conveyed through her fixation on the necklace and the way she keeps looking at and holding it. I could understand what she was feeling without the book having to spell it out for me, and those were some of my favourite moments.

But I found that emotional connection inconsistent.

There were other moments where I understood what the FMC was feeling, but not quite why it affected her so deeply or why it led her to make certain choices. One example was her injury later in the story. She is seriously hurt but hides it because someone else was injured as well and she feels responsible for it. I understood the situation, and I absolutely thought she was, in fact, at fault. But I found myself wishing the story had explored that guilt more deeply, rather than focusing so much on repeatedly reminding us of the physical pain, the severity of the injury, and how she was trying to hide it.

I think that’s ultimately what made it difficult for me to continue: I felt like I knew the FMC in theory, but I didn’t always feel like I knew her emotionally.

And that’s particularly difficult in a first-person POV, because I really wanted to feel like I understood the person whose head I was spending the entire story inside.

This isn’t a case of “this book wasn’t good.” There is A LOT here that I really enjoyed. It simply wasn’t working for me as a reading experience, and I think the disconnect I felt with the FMC ultimately outweighed my investment in the rest of the story.

I really hope this book finds its people, though, because there is so much here to love, and I truly believe it deserves to find the readers who will connect with it in all the ways I unfortunately couldn’t.

What happens when a love of games meets the passion of a writer? THIS BOOK, that's what.

SUMMARY TL:DR = A romantasy book that perfectly blends the mediums of fantasy and video games. Fans of both can enjoy this book with ease.

WHY DID I LIKE THIS BOOK?:
As an avid gamer myself it was thrilling to be able to fully imagine myself in Cynthia's shoes. Seeing what she is seeing, and experiencing her struggles in the barrows first hand. Maddie has built a world full of nods to both mediums and for that I will always be grateful.

As far as the story itself goes, it fits very snugly in the category of romantasy because it has that familiar feeling you get when you read stories in that genre. Trials and challenges; familiar backstories for characters and places; world building make up 3 of the many feathers in this book's cap.

CHARACTERS
Cynthia herself is a good FMC because she starts off as strong with an undercurrent of familial trauma - a feeling of being an outcast with something to prove. She makes both good and bad choices throughout and still redeems herself.

Desmond - as our MMC is a good contrast as he is far more reserved and quietly determined, navigating his own sets of circumstances as means to an end. His is broody and so typically male (fantasy male at least) that it gets the blood pumping when he inevitably opens up.

VILLAIN:
I'll leave this one deliberately blank to avoid spoilers but trust me, you won't be disappointed. But beware of those assumptions ladies and gentlespoons!

STORYLINE:
The Storyline overall is one of a slow incline towards the midway point as it builds up the characters, the world and gives you the reasons to read on. But once that midway point comes along the adventure and action ramps up with an explosive finale full of emotion and a twisty turny crescendo. Even having an ending that leads nicely into book 2 whilst also making you WANT to pick up book 2.

ROMANCE:
Before you come for me - hear me out. There is romance, ofc, but because this is a fast-paced book, the romance is also in the fast lane. If falling fast and intensely is not your thing, then you're out of luck. For ME, as someone who normally enjoys a bit of a build up, what I ENJOYED about the fast feelings was that it showed Cynthia as more of a WOMAN who comes across an attractive partner. Cynthia you filthy girl, you go get yours!

FINAL THOUGHTS
In Summary this book is perfect for fans of almost any type of fantasy or romantasy book and also fans of games such as Tomb Raider, Skyrim, Oblivion and Uncharted. A great debut novel! Great work Maddie. 💖💖

ARC Review

4/5

A Thief Among Fae by Maddy Calder was a fantastic read!

The writing style was amazing, and the book was very well written. I really enjoyed the world the author created and how much effort went into making it immersive. The long chapters worked really well for this, as they gave me more time to get lost in the story and the world.

One thing I kept wishing for, though, was a map! So many interesting places were introduced, and I often found myself craving a visual reference to help me picture where everything was. With such a detailed and intriguing world, I really think a map would have been a great addition.

I really enjoyed the mysterious vibe of the book. There’s always a sense that there’s more going on beneath the surface, which kept me curious.

One of my favorite parts was the sisterly bond between Cynthia and Evie. You can genuinely feel how much they love each other through the pages, and I really enjoyed the dynamic of Cynthia’s whole family.

I also really liked the dynamic between Cynthia and Desmond. Their slow-burn romance was one of the highlights for me, and I’m definitely invested in seeing where their relationship goes.

The side characters were another strong point. I loved that there were so many different personalities, which made the cast feel interesting and varied. And, of course, I enjoyed the banter!

The story did feel a little slow at times, especially in the beginning, but once I settled into the world and the story started unfolding, I really enjoyed it.

I’m very excited for the next book and can’t wait to see what happens with Cynthia and Desmond!

I received a complimentary advance review copy from the author. These are my honest opinions.

Adventure mixed with slow burn tension

✨Thank you for the eARC✨

This is a fun read with great adventure vibes. I loved the FMCs journey of seeing herself as weak despite doing so much for her family, and then coming to realize her own strength and potential.

The romance is a slow burn, and I wouldn’t say they’re enemies, but there’s definitely a huge lack of trust. This gives you great scenes for the “touch her and die” and “who did this to you” tropes, plus a one bed situation. Not much spice if that’s your jam, but there’s definitely some steam.

You also get a band of side characters that start as unlikely allies and gradually shifts to found family energy. But of course, not without a side of betrayal 👀

The ending hints to a whole new adventure. Super curious to see where this story goes in book two!

Quotes I loved:

“All dreams must end, but this one. . . I’ll risk my life as many times as it takes to bring it to reality.”

“Even with my odds of survival lessening, I don’t feel more afraid. I feel alive.”

“Touch her, and you die. I’ll make this forest your grave.”

“Your fear may know your name, but so does your strength. And your strength has carried you through every battle that was meant to break you.”

“Nothing is worth so much to me that I wouldn’t destroy it to keep you safe.”

“There’s no price I wouldn’t pay, no army I wouldn’t raise to protect you.”

“Not even the stars outshine you,”

Thief Among the Fae by Maddy Calder was definitely an interesting fantasy romance! I loved the combination of tomb raiding, dangerous magic, and a slow-burn romance with a mysterious fae prince.

Cynthia is willing to do whatever it takes to give her sick sister a better life, even if that means making a dangerous bargain with Desmond. I really liked her determination and how she wasn't afraid to stand up to him. Desmond, on the other hand, is sarcastic, secretive, and has a complicated past that makes him even more interesting.

The tension and banter between Cynthia and Desmond were definitely some of my favorite parts. I also enjoyed how Desmond saw something in Cynthia's magic that she didn't even recognize in herself. Their connection adds another layer to an already dangerous adventure.

Between cursed tombs, assassins, forbidden magic, and unexpected feelings, there is plenty going on to keep things interesting. I especially liked the necromancy aspect because it brought something a little darker to the story.

If you enjoy slow-burn romantasy, morally gray fae princes, strong female characters, and dangerous adventures, this is definitely a book worth checking out! I'm looking forward to seeing where this series goes next!

A Thief Among Fae by Maddy Calder is probably the most FUN book I’ve read in a while! And it’s inspired by Skyrim?! I haven’t played Skyrim in years, but reading this felt like I got to jump right back into that world. It was like returning to stroll through the streets of Whiterun and then going off to loot Shroud Hearth Barrow… except with fae, heists, and romance.

This book ticked so many of my boxes!

The worldbuilding? Well, duh 😏
The romance? I could practically cut the tension between these characters with a knife. The yearning was chef’s kiss. And the banter? DELICIOUS👏🏻

Every character had such a well thought out personality, and I ended up loving all of them. I especially enjoyed watching the group navigate their heists, their interactions, and the development of their friendships and trust.

And then came the betrayals and heartbreak 👀

I had an idea of where everything was heading, but I had absolutely no idea what path the characters would take to get there. So even when I thought I had things figured out, the twists still managed to surprise me.

And now that I’ve reached the ending… I WANT MORE! More surprises. More plot shifts. More heists. More everything 🙌❤️

3.25⭐️s - This has such a fun premise, it was definitely giving me National Treasure 2 vibes but in a fantasy setting. I thought the tomb raiding scenes were well executed, parts of me wishes I was there working through the clues.

I liked Cynthia as a character, but I do think there was a disconnect with her skillset. She supposedly has been raiding tombs for years but she seemed pretty unprepared for many events that take place.

I would say it feels like the first half of this book was written around the tropes it could utilize. All tropes I enjoy, but they felt empty, like they were just checking off a box. Around the 70% mark the plot definitely picks up and secured my interest, but up until that point it felt very typical for romantasy.

Thank you, Maddy Calder, for providing me with an ARC of A Thief Among Fae.

This book instantly made me feel warm and cozy. While there are definitely some stressful moments, it also delivers plenty of delicious longing and tension. The story follows Cyn, a human who secretly raids barrows and ancient graves to help support her family. But when she's presented with an offer that seems too good to be true, and that offer comes from a handsome, mysterious Fae Prince.... what would you do?

For me, this felt like a delightful mix of D&D, Skyrim, and Tomb Raider, with just a smidgen of *will they/won't they* romance woven throughout. The result is a thoroughly scrumptious story packed with adventure, magic, traps, and plenty of other fantastical surprises that kept me hooked.

I gave A Thief Among Fae 4/5 stars.

Survival Tip: If a handsome, mysterious prince tells you not to touch him while he sleeps... please listen.

This was such a fun read. It was a mix of Tomb Raider, Indiana Jones and The Mummy. Cynthia is an adventurous FMC who starts raiding burial sites to support her family during a crisis, but she learns that she loves it and if she can't go around the world on real adventures, then this is the least she can do. Desmond is the shunned prince of the Fae kingdom, infuriatingly handsome and mysterious. He enlists Cyn to help him with a very big job that could save his kingdom and hers. It's fast paced and full of mysteries and betrayals. Cyn becomes part of a found family, hones her skills and falls for the Fae prince, which as a human, she definitely should not do.

Now this is what I want when I say I need romantasy books with good yearning and a solid, well paced plot. I had so much fun with this! I really enjoyed the magic system and that it was normal for humans to have different tiers of magic. We get a great mix of different species of characters from Goblins, Orcs and more than one type of Fae. A good mix of both born family and found family drama. Multiple betrayals. And I ate up the main romance - this has made me fall in love with so many microtropes again like: they feel each other's emotions through a vow (deal), comforting them through a nightmare, "tell me to stop"... the list continues. And we get a "f*ck it" scene from both sides! Would highly recommend, this was great. Keen for book 2!

I finished this book within 24 hours because I simply could not put it down. I’m so thankful to be able to have had the opportunity to get an ARC of this book.

I’d say the first 30% was pretty slow for me overall but as soon as the storyline picked up I was completely hooked on it. There was just something different about this fantasy writing style that really got me hooked on it and I cannot wait for the second instalment to come out in 2027.

I genuinely enjoyed so many of the calls to Skyrim in this. The story was fantastic, well thought out, and the main character was frustrating but likeable. She felt a bit repetitive at the end, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed the story (ESPECIALLY darts 🙂‍↕️)

ARC Review

A Thief Among Fae was a fun romantasy with a good mix of adventure, magic, and slow-burn romance. I enjoyed the tomb raiding aspect (I haven’t read many of these!) and the tension between Cynthia and Desmond!

There was plenty of yearning and forced proximity, along with some of the best romantasy tropes (one horse, one bed, touch her and d!e). The story also had some interesting twists and unique scenes that I wasn’t expecting!

Overall, this was an enjoyable read and I’m curious to see where the story goes next!

Thank you to Maddy Calder for the ARC!

Ummm why haven't you read this yet?!

This book is amazing! Slow burn, found family, a kick butt FMC, and tomb raiding! It held me attention with no problem and left me wanting more.
