Unyielding Spirit, is the history of a small but distinctive Polish community in St. Louis which demonstrated resilience in the face of hardship, and determination in the face of oppression.
While the opening chapters of the book moved rather slowly, I thoroughly enjoyed this Polish St. Louis history. From my childhood, I was well aware of the large Polish community in the near north side area of St. Louis, surrounding St. Stanislaus Kostka parish. But I was surprised to learn of other Polish neighborhoods and parishes in St. Louis. In particular, I learned that the south St. Louis Mount Pleasant neighborhood where I was born (Virginia Ave, Michigan Ave, Mt Pleasant St, Itaska St, etc.) was also a Polish neighborhood, anchored by St. Hedwig parish. Raise a glass to this book. Na zdowie!!!
