Force
A few weeks ago, I was pretty average. One might even say normal. My biggest problems were my student loans and a job I couldn't stand, and I was perfectly happy to have no plans for New Year's Eve other than a date with a good book and a cup of tea.
Then I took a position at Möbius, Inc. and began seeing force lines — strange, energy-filled cords drifting through the air that no one else can see.
Or touch.
Or drain the power out of them.
I can.
Now I'm being hunted by a deranged fallen star, watched over by a seven-foot leprechaun with a soft spot for Guinness, and swapping small talk with the fossil hanging in my office lobby. My new coworkers are a mind-boggling mix of wizards, shapeshifters, and the occasional god. And then there's the far-too-charming man who keeps turning up at my most awkward moments and is becoming a problem I can't quite name.
The old myths are fading, and as the world forgets them, the magic that holds everything together is going with them. Some immortals have made their peace with that. Others have gone looking for a new source of power. And I'm starting to suspect they've found one.

This was a Kindle freebie and, of course, now I am hooked on the series. As a reader of paranormal, I am used to limiting myself to YA fiction (which is fine) because the "grown up stuff" usually involves themes that I don't feel like reading (violence, sex, stupid middle aged mistake making). I like that this has an adult female protagonist who is just trying to live her life.
Being a fan of Harry Potter and Michael Scott's "The Immortal Life..." series, I was happy to see another series that involved the Flemmels. Several of the characters in the book seem a little 0ver-the-top (a 6 ft leprechaun and a fallen star), but I liked them anyway. My favorite character is Bob, the statue in the main lobby of the office building. Nic and Peri have similar personalities to the same couple in "The Immortal Life..." series, in that they are loving, generous people with an inner peace that attracts people to them and makes them feel comfortable- I guess the wisdom of old age is interpreted in a similar way by multiple authors.
The romance in the book was (thankfully) not another girl torn between the normal guy and the magical guy. Alex is actually not aware that the guy she wants isn't "normal." And he is not trying to woo her to the "magical side" as many of the paranormals do.
I did buy the two other books in the triology to see more of what happens to Alex as a character than to see the good magic vs. evil magic thing-- there are only so many ways a "wand battle" can end. Alex's character, however, has many ways that she can evolve and I am interested to see how she handles her newly discovered powers.

Great read! I was privilegeed to read this book and the other 3 in the series before they were published online. If you liked Divergent, Hunger Games, Twilight and LOTR, you'll love this series too. I understand Shawna Logue, the author, has just finished the 4th in the series and is about to publish online. Get them at Amazon for 99 cents before the price goes up!

I don't know what I expected when I first started reading this book, but the story quickly surpassed any expectations I could have had. I liked this book. A lot. The story was, to me, very original and refreshing. The characters were well written, and apart from a few typographical errors, I was pleasantly surprised with this story. I can't wait to read the other books in the series.
