What's real love? How does it feel? Does it come with thunderstorm? Or with twinkling of bells? Is it written in stars? Does fate have a role in leading you to your soulmate? Can a person find love a second time? These questions swirled in my mind as I read this passionate, poetic and sometimes intense story with a beating heart of soulful friendship and second-chance love at its centre.

In the crowd of love stories with chiseled abs and bulging biceps and faces plucked straight out of a Lakme ramp, 'Parallel Heartbeats' comes knocking with a fresh, dewy appeal. If you want run-of-the-mill, stereotypical, stale love stories, this is not for you. This here is a different kind of love story with characters who are being given a second chance in love and life. This, as I would like to say, is mature love: real and simple, sans gloss and glamour.

"Somewhere between the chaotic rehearsals, the late-night playlist exchanges, and conversations that regularly stretched long past sunset, being around Aaryan had started feeling natural. Ash was used to temporary setups; a life built around packing crates didn’t normally allow for emotional anchors."

What makes a love story different? Characters? Emotions? The bonding or the banter? The twists or the tragedies? Or the ending? Well, what about the setting? What if the writer sets the story in a world which seems quite real What if the world where the story starts unfolding is so interesting that the readers are occupied not just with the characters but with the milieu as well? What if the world and its happenings act as turns, tests and twists, guiding the plot forward? That's a clever trick employed by the author in this love story. I loved the Lucknow college setup she chose in the beginning of the story.

"After that night, the space between them shed its caution. They walked between departments together, shared notes during lectures, looked for each other in crowded hallways. Ash stopped feeling like someone passing through. That feeling, more than anything, terrified her. One evening at their usual table, with papers and reference manuals spread between them, Ash rested her chin against her knuckles and watched Aaryan read. Evening light lay across the wood, catching the side of his face."

This unfolding of love in a college gave me very 'Elite' and 'Class' vibes and I totally dug it.

Strong characters make for strong stories. If the characters are flaky or one dimensional, the joy of reading a book, even if the story is interesting, is rendered half. The characters of this story are unpredictable, impulsive, multi dimensional and drive the story forward. It's a delight to see a character-driven story because their actions are as interesting as the plot and the twists. This also makes up for layering of the characters, adding a touch of humanity to papery words and that's just delightful. Have a look at what the author writes about Aaryan:
"And then, there was Aaryan. Ash noticed him before she could actively stop herself from looking. It wasn’t because he was the loudest or most disruptive person in the classroom; it was because the room itself seemed to adjust its gravity around him without realising it."

The story carries the natural chaos and confusion, the turmoil that the lovers go through. There is a very relatable incident where Shreya, who doesn't like the two leads mingling together, tries to pull a stunt with the help of a photograph. It reminded me so much of what happens in the colleges. The away author has shown jealousy is quite real.

"Across the room, Shreya watched the exchange, her posture immaculate, a smile that didn’t quite commit to being one on her face. She didn’t join the banter. But Ash caught the moment Shreya’s fingers tightened around her phone every single time someone said the word duet."

The story has its own fun moments and the quick exchange between the two MCs in the beginning. Their banter lightens up the story.

"Despite herself, she smiled — small, almost private.
Aaryan caught it. “There it is,” he said, a note of triumph in his voice.
“What?”
“The first sign of life. You’ve looked unimpressed by humanity since the morning assembly.”
“I was adjusting.”
“To us?”
“To Lucknow.”
“That’s fair,” he admitted, leaning back against the rough bark of the tree. “Lucknow’s basically an excessive amount of mutton kebabs, colonial poetry, and severe infrastructure problems.”

And this:
“So?” he asked after a few minutes, glancing at the rigid precision with which she had folded her lunch foil. “Army family?”
Ash blinked, disarmed by the question. “Is it that obvious?”
“You walk through a crowd like someone who’s lived in five different cities and settled in none of them.”
The accuracy of the statement startled her enough that she took him in for the first time, her analytical guard dropping. Aaryan smiled, his expression warm."

The storytelling is engaging and the writing style skilful. The characters feel real and full bodied, not lifeless and cardboardish. The reader feels helpless as there is only one goal in the present and now: to finish the book. Everything else comes later.

The story also has its share of low moments and the author has done justice to bringing those feelings to the foreground. Have a look:
"She chose quiet. She stopped waiting for him after lunch. She stopped lingering outside lecture halls when the bells rang. She let his messages sit a little longer before answering. It wasn't dramatic— just a measured distance between herself and something she couldn't afford to need. To Aaryan, it felt like she was disappearing. To Ash, it just felt like survival."

All in all, the author has traced their love across their lives. An emotional rollercoaster.

Some love stories are about getting the person you love. Parallel Heartbeats is more interested in what happens when love is real, but life doesn't make it simple.

The story follows Ash and Aaryan, whose relationship grows from a genuine friendship into something much deeper. Their lives are pulled in different directions by distance, family expectations, career, difficult choices, and circumstances neither of them can simply wish away. Aaryan leaves for his life and medical residency abroad, while Ash tries to rebuild herself and return to her studies and work. Yet, despite the distance, their connection continues through the smallest things—messages, memories, familiar routines, and those little moments that mean much more when shared with someone you truly know.

What I liked most was how naturally Ash and Aaryan's relationship is portrayed. It isn't only about romantic moments; there is friendship, humour, vulnerability, frustration, and a real sense of knowing each other. Their relationship has an ease to it that makes the emotional moments feel more meaningful.

I also liked that the book gives both characters lives outside their relationship. Ash's journey towards finding purpose again and Aaryan's struggles with his family, career, and the problems surrounding his father's business give the story more depth. The business conflict, in particular, adds an unexpected layer of tension to the later parts of the story.

The writing has a quiet emotional quality that I enjoyed. Some of the most memorable moments aren't necessarily the dramatic ones, but the ordinary details...the messages, the coffee photographs, the waiting, the things left unsaid. These moments make the distance between Ash and Aaryan feel real rather than simply being a plot device. Their reunion after months apart is another moment that stood out to me because it carries the weight of everything they have experienced separately.

Loved the book's idea that love doesn't always have to be loud or possessive to be meaningful. Sometimes it remains in the form of memories, choices, restraint, and the person we become because someone once knew us completely.

I genuinely thought I was picking up a soft school romance and somehow ended up emotionally attached to two people across YEARS of their lives. Like bro?? I came here for romance, not an emotional crisis.

Ash and Aaryan start as friends and slowly become important to each other, and I really loved that their relationship takes its time. You actually get to see the friendship turn into something deeper instead of them falling for each other out of nowhere. Their conversations, banter and the way they understand each other were probably my favourite parts of their relationship.

And then life happens.

Aaryan leaves for med school in the US while Ash stays in India, and suddenly they're dealing with distance, different dreams, growing up and all the things that become harder to say out loud. What I liked most was that there isn't some huge villain causing everything to fall apart. It's just life, choices, timing and two people trying to figure themselves out. And honestly, that made it hurt more because sometimes there isn't anyone to blame.

Ash was such a soft spot for me. She's so used to handling things on her own that she doesn't always see how capable she actually is. I loved seeing her journey from constantly second-guessing herself to slowly understanding what she wants for herself. And Aaryan being one of the few people who actually sees through all of that?? Yeah, I liked him.

Also, the friend group deserves a mention because their banter brought so much warmth to the story. I genuinely enjoyed having them around.

The overall feeling of this book is what stayed with me the most. It's soft, nostalgic and a little heartbreaking without trying too hard to be dramatic. There are moments where you're just reading normally and then suddenly you're sitting there like… oh. We're hurting now.

And that coffee moment??? Yeah. I understand why people kept talking about it. Some scenes don't need a huge dramatic breakdown to hurt you. Sometimes one small thing is enough to bring back everything.

Parallel Heartbeats isn't a perfect fairytale romance, and I think that's exactly why it worked for me. It's about loving someone while both of you are growing into completely different versions of yourselves, and figuring out what that love means when life doesn't follow the plan.

Some hearts never stop loving. They simply learn to beat in parallel.

And bro… that line really does stay with you after the last page.

Parallel Heartbeats follows Ash and Aaryan, two people from very different worlds who meet young and slowly become much more than just batchmates. Ash is used to constantly transferring schools and never getting too attached, until Aaryan and his friends become the people she didn't know she needed.
What starts as young love becomes much more complicated as family, ambition, expectations and circumstances enter the picture. What hurt me the most was watching Aaryan believe that letting Ash go was the best thing he could do for her. After losing his parents, his fear of losing her becomes so strong that he chooses to carry everything alone.
And sometimes, trying to protect someone by making decisions for them can cost you the very person you're trying to protect.

I loved these lines from the book:
**“Like sunflowers turning quietly toward each other after sunset, some hearts continue carrying the light they once shared.”: I loved this because it captures their relationship so beautifully. Even when they move in different directions, something of their love remains.

“Power, Ash was starting to understand, had a way of making love feel like something you couldn't quite afford.”: This one stood out because it shows how love can become complicated when family, privilege and expectations enter the picture.

“I keep waiting for this to feel less unreal.”: I liked how simple this line feels, especially because some reunions carry years of memories and emotions with them.
Ash eventually finds someone who chooses her, but she and Aaryan never completely stop loving each other. They simply grow up, with each other, because of each other, even when they aren't together.

Lucknow becomes the beginning of their story, where Ash and Aaryan meet at St. Xavier’s High School. Ash, a girl from a modest financial background, carries a quiet strength and her own set of unwritten rules for navigating the world:

From this line onwards on that very first page hooked me because I could see a part of myself in her ,the way she constantly prepares her mind for situations before they even happen. The way she underestimate herself being noticed by Aaryan made me more connections towards them like

🌻"I think you continuously underestimate how much courage it takes to build a life from scratch in an unfamiliar city. You keep calling yourself lost while you're actively conquering things that used to terrify you back in school. That version of you deserves more credit than you ever give her."

It doesn't happen often that the ending of a story catches me completely off guard, and does so in the most beautiful way. Parallel Heartbeats by Ashritta Saran was one of those books.

When I picked up this book, I was expecting a love story that would make me smile, maybe break my heart a little, and leave me with that warm feeling that comes from reading about two people finding their way to each other. But this book gave me so much more than that.

The story follows Aaryan and Ash, who meet when they're young, at a time when dreams, ambitions, and emotions all come with their own uncertainties. Despite the circumstances surrounding them, they fall in love. But sometimes, falling in love is the easy part. Staying in love is where things get complicated.

As Aaryan and Ash navigate life, their lives begin to change in ways neither of them could have predicted. Holding on to each other becomes harder. Their relationship is tested not because their love isn't strong enough, but because life doesn't always make it easy for two people to grow in the same direction. And that is what I really loved about this book.

The conflict feels realistic and relatable, especially for young adults who are still trying to find their footing in the world. Aaryan and Ash don't have all the answers, and their relationship doesn't magically solve everything. Instead, their love exists alongside all the uncertainty of growing up. Some love stories begin quietly, others begin dramatically, and this begin on the stairs of a school, just like a full-on Bollywood moment. ❤️
I picked up Parallel Heartbeats by Ashritta Saran without knowing exactly what to expect, and honestly, I ended up really enjoying the reading experience. The story begins with a cozy school setting where our main leads, Ash, the new transfer student, and Aryan Saxena, meet for the first time at St. Xavier’s High School. And yes, their first meeting has that “full on Bollywood style” feel to it!
The initial part of the story immediately reminded me of Ye Un Dino Ki Baat Hai, the school atmosphere, the friend circle, supportive characters, a best friend for life, teenage feelings and, of course, a villain. And yes… we collectively hated Shreya! 😂
What I particularly enjoyed was how the story changes as it progresses. The first part feels warm, cozy and filled with teenage school-love drama. But then the emotional intensity gradually takes over. Family drama, status differences, the pressure of being the only heir to an estate, misunderstandings and unexpected turns add several layers to the relationship.
The second part becomes much more emotional, and there were moments where I genuinely felt the weight of what the characters were going through. And then comes the final part, a complete rollercoaster of grief, distance and ultimate heartbreak.
I also liked that the writing is simple and flows easily, making it easy to settle into the story and become invested in the characters. There were moments that made me smile, moments that made me emotional, and moments where I simply wanted to know what would happen next.
And that ending! Let's just say, it is definitely going to surprise you.
Overall, Parallel Heartbeats is a warm, emotional journey that starts with the charm of teenage school romance and gradually takes you somewhere much deeper. But sometimes, love isn’t separated by distance it’s separated by the choices we make, especially when one person is ready to stand up, fight, and work things out, while the other never gives them that chance.

Following Aaryan and Ash from their younger years, this book takes you through a relationship that feels beautiful, genuine, and almost perfect. Their love manages to survive so much, but it also reminds us that two hearts can continue loving each other and still not end up together.

A Love Story About More Than Love

I genuinely enjoyed Parallel Heartbeats. ❤️

It begins with Ash, a transfer student entering a new school, and her meeting with Aaryan and their group of friends. What follows is a love story that grows naturally from friendship, conversations and understanding.

I especially loved Ash and Aaryan's conversations. Their chemistry felt effortless, and I enjoyed watching them support each other, challenge each other and put real effort into their relationship. The friends' gang was another favourite of mine. Their banter brought so much warmth and fun to the story.

But what really worked for me was how realistic the romance felt. This wasn't a love story where everything magically falls into place. Their relationship is tested by family expectations, studies, ambition, distance, timing and life itself. The story shows how even when two people deeply love each other, love alone doesn't always make every decision easy.

I also appreciated the emotional depth given to the characters. Grief, loneliness, belonging, growing up and learning to choose yourself are woven naturally into the story.

And the climax was definitely a highlight for me. I loved Ash's decision and respected her for it. I think it made sense for everything she had experienced and everything she had become. I know some readers may feel differently, but for me, it was one of the strongest parts of the book.

By the end, I felt like the story wasn't just about whether Ash and Aaryan would end up together. It was about what their love changed in them, what they lost, what they gained and who they became along the way.

And now I seriously want an Agastya POV or a companion story. I want to know his side, how he fell in love with Ash and what was happening in his heart throughout it all.

Some relationships blossom in school days. One such romance started in the teens is seen in this book. I find the themes of love, timing, and quiet space between what we feel and what we choose.

The story follows Ash and Aaryan. Ash joins St. Xavier's, a school in Lucknow. She finds him understanding and sensible. She shares with him her fears and journey till then. Gradually they become friends, and soon it changes to something deeper.

With time, their lives are pulled in different directions by distance. There are a lot of family expectations, career responsibilities, difficult choices, and circumstances that neither of them can simply wash away.

Aaryan leaves abroad to attain medical residency. Ash tries to rebuild herself and return to her studies and work. Yet, despite the distance, their connection continues through the smallest things like messages and memories.

I relished the little details of school life when Ash joins the new school. The innocence of whispered confessions and the thrill of young love brought back memories. It felt like revisiting corridors filled with laughter, friendship, and the sweet ache of growing up.

I honestly completed the book “Parallel Heartbeats” yesterday... But i just couldn't get myself to write anything about it, even though... I could hear my thoughts screaming at me.... This book hit the place I keep hidden, safe. But it just hit there.

One might say, I am being a lil dramatic about it, but my experience is mine, no I wasn't crying hysterically after ending it, but i am not lying when I say, that this book kept me wondering for two whole days.

I heard others say, they loved the ending, honestly I didn't, maybe, it was too realistic, and I am just trying to run from reality.
She took a wise decision, she didn't deserve what she got, that feeling, the punishment just for falling for him.
Someone said right, when they said, love takes guys, and she had it, she had the gut to stand by him through everything, but he was paranoid by his own fears, the fear of losing her to something, made him lose her for his own fear.

Sometimes people makes the right decision, but by that time, time had rushed away, and you are left way behind. This is what happened to him...... I throughout wished for her to give him a chance, but I know that he didn't deserve it.

Expecting her to give him a chance for returning back is wrong, becoz before this, she always gave him every possible chance.

I was numb for a moment, I kept wondering, if I were Ash, my decision would have been the same, but I am not courageous enough as her to love someone again.

Usually I don't read author notes but I did this team, and I got who Ash actually is 🤭.....
