A husband and a wife drift apart. Will they make it? A washed up actress and her loyal assistant. Are they really that close, or are they using each other? Two sisters decide to talk openly about their relationship and it will change forever. For better or for worse?
Mary Papas is in love with the written word ever since she was a kid. Books were always her best friends, sometimes her only friends. She likes to read many books simultaneously while drinking coffee and eating croissants. When she falls deeply in love with a book, she stays up all night to finish it.
I love short stories, but they can be tricky to pull off. One has but a few pages in which to hook a reader. Making them care for a character in such a short space is even trickier.
And yet, I was pleased that Papas proved expert in doing just that. The first story was probably my favorite, since I'm a sucker for a nice twist and a happy ending. The second one was darker, with an equally powerful - albeit sinister - ending. As for the third one, Papas displays her writer skills in full by presenting a complete back story through a few expert sentences within an electrifying dialogue.
I read it in a single sitting, and will be checking out more books by this obviously talented author.
I loved it. I'm a big fan of Mary's work and she and I both have a passion for short fiction. We also both tend to like darker things (occasionally funny too!) and these stories didn't disappoint. If you like flash fiction, pick up a copy of this little book. It takes no time at all to read, but the stories will still stick with you long after you've finished!
