Hans Magnus Enzensberger was a German author, poet, translator and editor. He had also written under the pseudonym Andreas Thalmayr.
Enzensberger was regarded as one of the literary founding figures of the Federal Republic of Germany and wrote more than 70 books. He was one of the leading authors in the Group 47, and influenced the 1968 West German student movement. He was awarded the Georg Büchner Prize and the Pour Le Mérite, among many others.
He wrote in a sarcastic, ironic tone in many of his poems. For example, the poem "Middle Class Blues" consists of various typicalities of middle class life, with the phrase "we can't complain" repeated several times, and concludes with "what are we waiting for?". Many of his poems also feature themes of civil unrest over economic- and class-based issues. Though primarily a poet and essayist, he also ventured into theatre, film, opera, radio drama, reportage and translation. He wrote novels and several books for children (including The Number Devil, an exploration of mathematics) and was co-author of a book for German as a foreign language, (Die Suche). He often wrote his poems and letters in lower case.
Enzensberger also invented and collaborated in the construction of a machine which automatically composes poems (Landsberger Poesieautomat). This was used during the 2006 Football World Cup to commentate on games.
Tumult, written in 2014, is an autobiographical reflection of his 1960s as a left-wing sympathizer in the Soviet Union and Cuba.
Enzensberger translated Adam Zagajewski, Lars Gustafsson, Pablo Neruda, W. H. Auden and César Vallejo. His own work has been translated into more than 40 languages.

Island, Kuba, Atlantski okean, Litvanija, Njufaundlend — Dante, Hegel, Po, Lenjin — istorija katastrofe, novine, vesti, poetska telegrafija — i niz izuzetnih ekfraza gde likovnost iznova dobija nov, svež lik.
Poslednje stranice ove knjige završio sam u kafiću u Leposaviću uz akciju espresso+ koka kola (180 dinara) i Tejlor Svift u pozadini.
I da, zaista volim prevode Zlatka Krasnog.

Sest hetk,
mil öeldakse sõna
"õnnelik",
pole kunagi õnnelik hetk.
Sest janune ei saa
oma janu üle huulte.
Sest töölisklassi suust
ei kuule sõna töölisklass.
Sest sellel, kes heidab meelt,
pole tahtmist öelda:
"Ma olen meeleheitel."
Sest orgasm ja "orgasm"
ei lange kokku.
Sest surija ei väida:
"Ma suren nüüd,"
vaid ainult koriseb tuhmilt,
millest me aru ei saa.
Sest hoopis elavad
tüütavad surnuid
oma õudsete uudistega.
Sest sõnad tulevad ikka liiga hilja
või liiga vara.
Sest see, kes räägib,
on keegi teine,
alati keegi teine,
ja see,
kellest räägitakse,
vaikib.

No spoiler, just sinking!
Read
May 3, 2021Lugesin seda "Eesti ja maailmakirjanduse suured teemad loengu jaoks. See loeng keskendus katastroofi teemale.
I read this for a university course and I have no idea how to rate it if I'm honest.
It is a long fragmented poem, set in mainly three places: Titanic, Berlin and Havanna. The poem uses the class divisions on the Titanic to discuss social problems prevalent in the 19th century. Coincidentally, this was the part I found most interesting. How the author used the sinking of the Titanic to analyse modern politics and cultural issues. It also uses the themes of catastrophe, what happens before the event and what are the consequinces.
Since this is a poem, with many "easter eggs" and cultural references buried in it, I don't think I could fairly review it. I agree that this is a very well constructed poem, almost a modern epic. However, I read it quite quickly and I must say that my brain did not absorb everything.
I will not be rating this, since this really wasn't something to enjoy or to not enjoy.

Strange book. Thought it was solely about the Titanic, how wrong I was.
Some interesting verses and food for thought but not particularly riveting.

Weitere Gründe dafür, dass die Dichter lügen
Weil der Augenblick
in dem das Wort glücklich
ausgesprochen wird,
niemals der glückliche Augenblick ist.
Weil der Verdurstende seinen Durst
nicht über die Lippen bringt.
Weil im Munde der Arbeiterklasse
das Wort Arbeiterklasse nicht vorkommt.
Weil, wer verzweifelt,
nicht Lust hat, zu sagen:
„Ich bin ein Verzweifelnder“.
Weil Orgasmus und Orgasmus
nicht miteinander vereinbar sind.
Weil der Sterbende, statt zu behaupten:
„Ich sterbe jetzt“,
nur ein mattes Geräusch vernehmen lässt,
das wir nicht verstehen.
Weil es die Lebenden sind
die den Toten in den Ohren liegen
mit ihren Schreckensnachrichten.
Weil die Wörter zu spät kommen,
oder zu früh.
Weil es also ein anderer ist,
immer ein anderer,
der da redet,
und weil der,
von dem da die Rede ist,
schweigt.

The coolest poem ever written about an ocean liner sinking. And does this guy have a great name or what?
