The Shift: A Meridian Files Thriller - Book 2

She died peacefully. That was the first lie.

The record says she killed herself. The record is lying.

Cora James worked the night shift. She counted the empty hallways, signed a state complaint, and made a whole chain of memory-care facilities answer for the hours no one watched.

On a Sunday they find her cold on her own couch, shoes lined up against the wall, hands clean. Overdose, the report says. Self-inflicted. The same class of drug the chain uses to keep its patients quiet. But there is a dentist appointment circled on her calendar, three weeks out, and a capped pen beside a half-empty glass, with not one scrap of paper anywhere for her to have written on. A woman who counted everything does not cap the pen, line up her shoes, and stop.

The detective who signs the ruling cannot sleep after. Rachel Adler, who buried her own mother inside this same chain, does not believe a word of it. Then Cora's voice surfaces on a phone she hid before she died, recorded for exactly this: They will say I did it to myself. It will not be true. I don't use. I count.

She was counting the dead. One building looked like sad old people dying. Four buildings was a policy. A name on a chart, a dose, a signature, across forty-seven facilities and six states.

And Cora's mother is on that chain's memory floor now, her mind measured into a number by a stranger with a clipboard. Soon she will not be able to tell Rachel her name.

THE SHIFT is a thriller about the records we trust and the people we hand to the night shift.

A.R. Hollowell

A.R. Hollowell is the author of psychological thrillers that explore the moral pressure points of ordinary lives. His novels place readers inside impossible choices, not simply to frighten them, but to leave them asking the more unsettling question: what would I have done?

His work lives in the uneasy space between what is legal and what is right. He writes about people caught inside institutions built to protect them, including courts, hospitals, families, workplaces, and systems of authority, where truth is often incomplete and every available choice comes with a consequence. His characters are rarely given clean answers. Instead, they must confront loyalty, guilt, power, grief, responsibility, and the private cost of doing what they believe is right.

Known for atmospheric suspense, emotional complexity, and ethical dilemmas that continue beyond the final page, Hollowell’s stories blend psychological tension with questions of conscience. Whether the threat comes from a hidden past, a professional system, or the person closest to the protagonist, his novels ask readers to look beyond the obvious and consider the human consequences of silence, certainty, and survival.

When he is not writing, A.R. enjoys flying drones, building new things, exploring emerging technology, and watching movies with his family.

Readers can follow A.R. Hollowell and join the Hollowell Circle of Trust Facebook group for new releases, bonus chapters, behind-the-scenes updates, and conversations about the stories still to come.

The Shift by A.R. Hollowell

What stood out to me most about The Shift was the subject A.R. Hollowell chose to tackle, because underneath the mystery is a genuinely unsettling story about vulnerable people, the systems entrusted to care for them, and what can happen when someone finally starts asking questions.

Cora James works the night shift at a memory-care facility, and she has noticed enough concerning patterns that she files a state complaint. Then Cora is found dead from what authorities believe is a self-inflicted overdose.

But Cora left questions behind.

There’s a future dentist appointment on her calendar, her shoes are neatly lined up, a capped pen sits beside a glass without a note—and most importantly, there is a recording from Cora warning that if she is found dead, she didn’t do it to herself.

That was such an intriguing way to pull me into the investigation.

As more of Cora’s work comes to light, the story becomes much larger than the death of one woman. She had been tracking deaths and finding similarities involving medications, charts, doses, and signatures across multiple memory-care facilities. Suddenly, what could have been explained away as isolated incidents begins to look like a much bigger pattern.

I really appreciated what Hollowell was exploring here. There is something particularly disturbing about a mystery involving people who may not always be able to advocate for themselves, especially when the very records and institutions meant to protect them can also make it incredibly difficult to uncover the truth.

I also have to give Hollowell credit for creating a mystery that feels like it has something to say beyond simply solving a crime. There are larger conversations here about elder care, accountability, grief, and how easily an individual can become lost inside a much larger system.

For me personally, the writing style took a little longer to connect with. I tend to gravitate toward a very particular style of thriller, so I didn’t become as emotionally immersed as I normally like to be. But that’s much more about me as a reader than the quality of the story being told.

And I think that’s important to acknowledge because I can absolutely appreciate a well-thought-out story even when its narrative style isn’t necessarily my preferred one.

The Shift has an intriguing mystery, an important subject at its center, and a premise that becomes increasingly unsettling the more Cora’s discoveries begin to make sense.

A.R. Hollowell clearly had something meaningful he wanted to explore with this story, and I’m glad I gave it the opportunity to take me somewhere outside of my normal reading comfort zone.

This book was given to me as an ARC by the Author via BookSirens here is my voluntarily review.

4.50⭐️ I have enjoyed reading every single one of his books 📕. I loved the suspense and that uneasy feeling throughout the story. I was suspicious of everybody at some point 😂 and there were definitely a few “WHAT?!” moments that had me going back like, did I just read that right?! and that’s what I love the most about his books 📚 📕 . Don’t get me wrong there were moments I was frustrated, suspicious of everyone, and convinced I knew where things were going… only to realize I absolutely did NOT. 😂 Definitely recommend.

The Shift is the second book of two in the Meridian Files series. This book is focused on Rachel and Detective Nowak each building their cases against Meridian, the company that runs 47 facilities which cater to memory care and hospice. As the two cases eventually merge into one, the danger for both of them increases.

This book really kept my focus. I just wanted to know what was going to happen. As the impact of the case is felt, the toll of the work on Rachel and Nowak is great.

I won’t even comment on that ending. Why? This is the last book in the series? Why do that to me with that ending!! Read it and you will understand. Another great story that made me have all the feels.

Wow. Just when I thought I understood where this story was heading, it intensified in ways I didn’t expect. It’s a raw reminder that doing the right thing doesn’t always guarantee a fair outcome, especially when you’re up against a system that doesn’t want to listen. The emotional weight of fighting for the truth and still losing ground hit me hard. This book captures that struggle with honesty and intensity, and it stayed with me long after I closed the last page. This author really knows how to take a book to the next level and just when you think you know the ending you get slammed with the truth. Fantastic book in this series.

Todd was an amazing read. When Cora realized things just weren’t adding up at the home her mother passed away in, she started digging. And omgosh she uncovered so much! Patterns and inconstancies. I was honestly blown away. I loved the depth of this story. The way the suspense is continuous and never lets up. Kept me questioning and needing to know what was going on. This was such an amazing story. It really makes one question our health care facilities…

All I can say is WOW! A. R. Hollowell, you’ve done it again and delivered another amazing sequel! I was hooked from the very beginning and couldn’t put this one down. But how can you leave me hanging with THAT ending?! I need answers! What a fantastic read that had me completely invested from start to finish. Absolutely loved it!

I absolutely loved book two The Shift. Cora was trying to do the right thing. But of course the people who “care” about the bottom line are the ones who make the “important” decisions. When Cora got to close, it was time to eliminate her. She wasn’t the first casualty of the truth. She will not be the last.

I read The Shift by author A.R. Hollowell.

Debbie and Cora were both dedicated night shift workers for one of the many memory care facilities under the Meridian umbrella. They didn’t know one another yet their strong ethical nursing hearts pulled them to both keep private notes of the wrongs that were going on at the nursing homes. They were both found dead at home, a short time apart, in an eerily similar manner, both ruled death by their own hands.

Detective Ray Nowak can’t shake the feeling something is being missed. Something doesn’t make sense about the deceased. Things are not adding up. Rachel lost her mother to one of the Meridian care homes & when Rachel and Nowak begin to compare research a deadly pattern begins to surface from the dark calculated Meridian underbelly. Residents at the facilities are dying & chart notes support proper care. They are both cautioned about continuing their covert sleuthing. Will they be able to find the truth before they are both permanently silenced?

Book 1 of The Meridian Files is The Chart. I read it in a day. This is book 2. Again, another day of housekeeping neglected as I would not pause my reading. This is a pattern of my own with A.R. Hollowell books.

This book is gripping. The hook is quick, the pace is steady and suspenseful. The anxiety…present and accounted for. The characters are endearing and the villains are cunning and devious. Well written, multilayered, kept me guessing, and turning pages. True thriller.

Definitely recommend.

What happens when you "choose the truth over the case"?

The Shift picks up where The Chart left its scar, and A.R. Hollowell doesn't let up. Rachel Adler is back, and this time she's not alone, Detective Ray Nowak has stopped trusting the paperwork too.

What follows is a slow-burning descent into the machinery behind two deaths the system has already closed the book on, and the quiet, terrifying cost of refusing to look away.

Rachel and Nowak's determination is never loud. It doesn't need to be. Every step they take toward Meridian's elusive top tier is a step other women have already died taking, and they know it. That's what makes their resolve so devastating, not recklessness, but a willingness to pay the same price the truth already cost.

And at the centre of it all is Gloria, Cora's mother, her mind slipping further each day, holding onto the one thing her daughter needed her to keep. It's love doing what memory can no longer do alone, and it's some of the most quietly heartbreaking writing in the book.
Hollowell's prose remains a study in restraint. Not a word wasted, not a beat overplayed, and yet it finds its way in and settles somewhere in your heart, lingering long after the last page.

The Shift is a devastating, aching testament to the women who count what happens after visiting hours, and the ones brave enough to keep counting after them.

My thanks to Booksirens and A.R. Hollowell for the ARC. All views are my own.

The Shift is the second in The Meridian Files series, one of the most clever and I have ever encountered. It is about the painfully slow and quick disease of dementia which robs the sufferers of dignity on an expensive and understaffed institutional memory care ward and those who are touched by it, especially family members. Elder neglect, institutional staff roles and hierarchy, insidious killings as a care plan, and medication misuse are discovered and meticulously recorded by Rachel who had lost her mother to dementia. But it is not only the patients who are in danger. Detective Nowak uses his profiling skills and experience and risks everything to peel back the layers of deceit. The two make a marvellous team, intelligent and determined. And then there’s Gloria with so much heart and spirit!

Author A. R. Hollowell's writing is agonizingly lovely, unsettling, and quietly tense. Each word has its place. I felt the full weight of the story and re-read sections over and over to let them seep into my skin. His uneasy endings are perfect for those readers like me who do not want the monochromatic tidiness. How does one go back to reading ordinary novels after this?

Though not absolutely crucial, please do read The Chart first. This is a series to be savored, one rich word at a time.

This story resonated deeply with me for several reasons. I worked in critical care mist of my 40 years the went to senior care. I would hope this evil fantasy is a product of a wild overactive imagination!!! If situations were frequent there would have been massive investigations and homicide charges on many in those situations. I was instantly ticked off at Ray's hands off approach initially. By the end of the story I had some respect for Ray again . The creep factor was high and had the hairs on the back of my neck on edge reading this. That last line was pure author's clickbait !!!

I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest review.

This was very repetitive and slow moving. People didn't act quickly. Why? Seniors?

This story is not a reflection of senior homes. It was a nightmare of the author's put to pen. I felt personally offended because of my profession.

Y’all, The Shift takes “standard procedure” and exposes the monster hiding beneath the paperwork! 😱

When night nurse Debbie Hargrove’s death is ruled self-inflicted, Detective Ray Nowak nearly closes the case—until it mirrors another suspicious death. As he joins forces with Rachel Adler, altered charts, a hidden map, and forty-seven care facilities reveal a horrifying system turning chemical restraint into “care” and murder into tidy medical records.

Rachel is fierce, compassionate, and impossible not to root for, while Nowak’s growing doubt gives the investigation real grit. A.R. Hollowell’s sharp, chilling writing tightens the tension like a blood-pressure cuff.

Dark, enraging, and terrifyingly believable—five pulse-pounding stars! 🔥

I love the way A R Hollowell writes. The clever but meticulous way he places his words, paints a picture that makes you see everything as if you are right there. The dread, the fear, the knowing something is not right. It paves the way for another amazing read.
This book was impossible to put down. It raised so many questions about care facilities. The way their paperwork reflects how they want things to look, not the way things are actually being done. It really makes you think. I find this true in every one of his books. Besides being a great read, it makes you stop and think.

I loved the slow-building sense of dread and the way the investigation gradually pulls back layer after layer of something much bigger. The atmosphere is chilling, and the mystery kept me invested right through to the end.

Clever, disturbing, and impossible to put down, “The Shift” is a gripping thriller that will make you think twice about how easily the truth can be buried behind a piece of paperwork.

Another winner by A.R. Hollowell! Many thanks to the author and publisher for the advanced reader’s copy of this book. The 2nd book in the Meridian Files series, this installment follows Rachel Adler and Detective Nowak as they try to expose mistreatment and wrongful deaths at a nursing facility. As previous books by Mr. Hollowell, this book kept me engrossed in the story and on the edge of my seat. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

This one was a WILD RIDE! After reading Book #1 (The Chart), I assumed this one would just be from the perspective of Cora, telling the same story from a different viewpoint. Boy was I wrong! While that is a small piece, this case gets absolutely crazy. I did really enjoy the storyline, although at times it is a bit confusing keeping all the various characters separate (hence the 4-star rating).

This is the sequel to The Chart and I am still so shocked by the story line. It was a little slower for me to read but I also had some stuff going on home life which made it take me longer. The ending has my mind blown as it seems this is only a 2 book series but ended with the option of another one possibly? I feel that author should have had more of Lily, Rachel’s daughter throughout the story to tie the ending together but overall it was a great read!

I enjoyed the first book in this series a lot. I felt that this one dragged a bit and kind of repeated the same things over and over.

It just felt kind of rushed to get the story out there and then dragged with the same information and sentence stucture over and over. The more I read from this author the more I think the writing style might not be for me.
