In terms of quantitative knowledge the book adds little to what we know already. It's strength, as compared to classics such as Bairoch, deVries, probably also Clark, is that it fleshes out the energy/food supply aspect - a bit in the spirit of the old texts from e.g. von Thünen. But also it gives the reader a glimpse of what daily life looked like in those pre-industrial cities at times. Rather than focussing on the aggregate/macro-picture, it sometimes delves into nitty gritty details. This makes it a more exciting at times.
In general it is more focused on narratives on the evolvement of the city system in the spirit of the unbeatable Hohenberg, Lees book. Half of the book is case studies on the major European cities, which are quite informative though.
At times it gets a bit germanocentric, both in terms of focus and references from the literature.
