Armistice

Rate this book
With Junie Cauldwell’s 16th birthday comes an unexpected gift—she’s a witch, one in a long line of women who either mastered their magic or succumbed to the power it offered.

Social outcast Junie has only ever found comfort in two things: her best friend Miles (who’s suddenly “friendlier” than ever), and Armistice Manor, a remote hotel run by her Aunt Melinda. Things are different at Armistice this visit however, and not just because Junie can now bring inanimate objects to life. Unusual guests from the hidden land of Lothea fill the rooms, all seeking one thing: protection.

When her aunt disappears, Junie is forced to search Lothea’s wild and enchanted terrain, accompanied by a motley band of exiled residents. But no amount of preparation readies the young witch for what is waiting on the other side of her new life … or who.

Really enjoyed this fluffy and fun magical read.
Our main character finds out she's a witch and I have loved reading about her journey and how she reacts to all this power.
Towards the end a threat to her and her world is becoming more and more apparent!

ARMISTICE by S. Marie Carlson is full of everything I love: magic, supernatural powers, a fleshed-out new world and AWESOME ANIMAL SIDEKICKS! They are my favorite thing, and Carlson delivers them tenfold. One word: Paxillii (he's the cutest thing ever, but all is not as it seems with the little talking furball).

The fantasy novel starts out with Junie Cauldwell, a beautiful but awkward high school student just jonesing to get away from her neglectful (and cruel) parents. She is anxious to arrive at Armistice, the family-owned manor her aunt runs where she feels accepted and normal. But Armistice is FAR from normal, which she begins to see immediately on this trip, which just so happens to start on her sixteenth birthday. Soon bizarre things and creatures come to light, and Junie is dealt the surprise of a lifetime: she's a witch, and her powers have not only arrived in time for her birthday, but they are STRONG. And difficult to master.
Her Aunt Melinda is in charge of taking care of creatures like Paxillii--mystical beings who've sought refuge from an evil force in their native land of Lothea. When Aunt Melinda has to go into Lothea to save her lover, Junie is left to watch over Armistice on her own; of course, all hell breaks loose. There's a sexy guy who keeps showing up to both irk and intrigue Junie, as well as her mixed feelings for her best friend Miles (who is certainly falling for her in a not-so-best-friend way).

Overall, not a dull moment. Great world-building; I loved Lothea and its medley of creatures and unique places. Junie is a likable, complex character, fighting her fears in all things, love, magic and otherwise. There's also a strong spiritual undercurrent, which I love. Can't wait for the sequel! Highly recommend.

I received a free digital copy of this from the author in exchange for my review. My opinions have not been swayed in any way - these are my own words and thoughts on this story.

This was quite a tangle of a ride with a cliffhanger to boot! I enjoyed the dual worlds, the bantering dialogue, and imagination that went into all the characters and ideas...but at times it was a bit too much. My head swam a little as I read this, trying to keep straight what type of magic was what and remember all the little facts Aunt Melinda loved to dump at random times. Junifred (loved that name!) was wishy-washy at times, but I still liked her.

Overall, this story was good. However, it seemed rushed at times, I asked myself many times what the point of Miles was beyond having the cliche best-friend, and the insta-love with Rory was totally unbelievable. If a little more time and effort had been taken to set the stage, give the characters some space to grow and expand, it would have worked.

Still, the story moved at a fair clip and kept me reading. I curse the cliffhanger at the end, but it didn't have the oomf to leave me growling in despair and shaking a fist at my lack of a time-machine to skip ahead and get the next book immediately. If you like works along the lines of Donita K. Paul and Anne Elisabeth Stengl then I think you'll like this one and will catch the allegorical hints.

DNF 50%.

I hate rating books so poorly but I couldn’t get into this one. I didn’t find the storyline or any of the characters engaging. This was a big flop unfortunately.

Junie is a nerdy girl and on her way to Armistice Manor, to help her aunt out during summer vacation. Then she learns on her 16th birthday that she is a witch.

It was an interesting start but it was too fast-paced. I hoped to read more about brewing potions and learning new spells. All of sudden Julie and her friends were fighting some evil guy and the book was over.

Hopefully the second book has more details and explaines more about those many characters.
