I was fortunate enough to get an advanced readers copy of this debut novel! It’s set in my home city and by a local author, which is great to support! It’s a love letter to theatre kids, which as a theatre kid I appreciate. It also highlights the production/backstage side of theatre which is great, because when there is media about theatre kids usually it’s focused on actors. I am a musical theatre kid and have never done a play, so it was different than what I’m used to, but I could still appreciate it. I do read and enjoy a lot of romance novels, although I read very little straight romance so this was outside of my ordinary. On a similar note, maybe I just live in a gay bubble, but there were surprisingly few queer characters for a theatre-based piece of media. Overall it’s a great book. It’s very well written and checks all the boxes of a great romance novel. It took a little while for things to get going, but then I was very invested. The initial “conflict”/reasoning as to why they don’t like each other is very well written. It’s complex and both of them have very valid reasons for behaving the way they did. There isn’t one who is clearly in the right/wrong which means they start their relationship on even footing. They also have a mutual respect for each other. The side characters are fleshed out, which I appreciate, although at the beginning I kept mixing them up. I thought it was very interesting to have Christine to be friends with both Aaron and Cathy. In a way she represents the reader, observing both sides of the story, and her perspective allows for some unique insights. One thing about the writing that I noticed was that there were very few contractions. To me it made the writing feel a bit clunky, but it didn’t take away from the story at all. It does a great job of capturing the feeling of needing to be in control and feeling like everything has to be perfect, which I can relate to. But it also shows how you need to let that go and accept support from those around you. Overall it’s a very impressive and well written book with a wonderful story and romance that acts as a love letter to theatre kids.

I received an ARC of The Love Monologue in exchange for an honest review.

When I read the blurb, I was instantly interested. I was expecting a cheesy, feel-good romance with lots of banter, which was exactly what I needed. But Megan Clarke made me connect with Cathy, the FMC, from the very first page in a way that surprised me and made the story much more emotional than I expected. Kinda like watching your best friend live her life while cheering her on from the sidelines.

The characters are written like real humans, not just props in a story. They have their own opinions and quirks, and they make questionable decisions. Ngl, there were times when I wanted to reach inside the book and shake Cathy and/or Aaron. Like I said - watching your BFF.

The chemistry between Cathy and Aaron felt real, and the banter was just so good. I’m a sucker for a good enemies-to-lovers trope, and I thought it was well done here. I also enjoyed the setting much more than I first anticipated. It felt fresh and well written, and definitely made me want to read more books surrounding theatre.

All in all, The Love Monologue really gripped me and was genuinely unputdownable, which is why I’m giving it 4 stars.

What a great debut novel by author Megan Clarke! The novels first few chapters centre around the idea having to work with someone who ruined your life (or a part of it) to get closer to your dreams, goals and ambitions. The author paints realistic and entertaining picture of what it’s like to work in the theatre industry (the relationships, the heartbreak, the rejection, the joy) that is a little window for those not in the industry, and a flood of memories for those who are.

The relationship building is SO strong and I immediately found myself invested in distinct chatector, especially the MCs. I found myself unable to put down this book, flying through it and wanting to know what was happening next - there was tension, strong chemistry between charectors that jumped off the pages, connection, and an incredible amount of musical theatre reference. Do yourself a favour and read this book!!!!!

I loved this! The theater setting was such a fun backdrop, but Cathy and Aaron were what really sold it for me. Their chemistry felt natural, and I loved watching all that tension slowly turn into something real. I also really liked that communication and fear of what happens after the happy moment are actually part of the story instead of being used just to manufacture drama. Funny, romantic, emotional, and very, very cute.
