“ When Francis discarded his clothes, the Bishop wrapped him in his own cloak; and he finally left the court, dressed in a workmen’s tunic with a length of rope as a belt. He would not have changed these garments for the richest clothes in Christendom, for they were the outward pledge of his marriage to Lady Poverty, a love match of every there was one. Christ has chosen Poverty: she had been faithful to Him all through His earthly life, she was with Him on the cross and in the sepulcher, closer to Him than anything and anyone; and therefore to Francis she was a beautiful and desirable and beloved lady, and he would be her knight” (p.g 26).
Beautiful little book with a summary of the main events of Francis' life and ministry, with some great stories included. We purchased this on a trip to Assisi in the Basilica of St Francis, and it includes many drawings/paintings on the high quality gloss paper. There are many books with greater detail but this is a great one for a window into his life and fellow Minor Friars.
I read this book on the last full day of silent retreat, and had mixed feelings about it. I liked that it was to the point and gave me much better context for the works of St. Francis, but I wish it dove further into the creation of the Franciscan order and why it split in the years after Francis’ death.
