A husband and wife, their friend a widow and her ward, a cavalry officer, a married woman travelling alone, and the young woman who serves the passengers in this first-class carriage. All but the officer and the servant are titled. To pass the long hours a game of cards commences with startling rules. The winner of a hand is allowed to place a forfeit, or challenge, on the hand’s loser. So begins a game of strip “poker” that ends, hours later, with no-holes barred sex with everyone in the car. Women become bi, a husband watches his wife used, a married woman cheats, and a 19-year-old loses her virginity. The sex is breathtaking and yet is described without descending into smut. The vernacular is proper English and sometimes seems out of place considering the activities, but it is not. It works. By the time they pull in life’s have been changed, roles reversed, friendships created, marriages strengthened as well as cast in doubt. Secrets are reveals and scandalous behaviors exposed. It is one of the best books I’ve read in some ti0me.
