A.J.'s family rented a beach house for the summer, and you'll never guess in a million hundred years who rented the house next door. Well, you have to read the book to find out. So nah-nah-nah boo-boo on you!*
*Okay, okay, it's Andrea and her family. And she has a monster crush on Mr. Sunny, the hunky (but weird) lifeguard. Ooooh! When are they gonna get married?
The author of over 80 books in a little over a decade of writing, Dan Gutman has written on topics from computers to baseball. Beginning his freelance career as a nonfiction author dealing mostly with sports for adults and young readers, Gutman has concentrated on juvenile fiction since 1995. His most popular titles include the time-travel sports book Honus and Me and its sequels, and a clutch of baseball books, including The Green Monster from Left Field. From hopeful and very youthful presidential candidates to stunt men, nothing is off limits in Gutman's fertile imagination. As he noted on his author Web site, since writing his first novel, They Came from Centerfield, in 1994, he has been hooked on fiction. "It was fun to write, kids loved it, and I discovered how incredibly rewarding it is to take a blank page and turn it into a WORLD."
Gutman was born in New York City in 1955, but moved to Newark, New Jersey the following year and spent his youth there.
Summer break finally arrives and A.J. is off to the beach with his family, little did he know that they will be sharing the beach house with the family of the girl he is least friends with.
All the second/third grader silliness and misfits goes on, so you can expect some laughs.
But the girl VS. boy war goes on and in this book is layered with the “if you like a girl, you act like you hate her.” speech. Which is very problematic.
Mr sunny is funny is a very funny and energetic book.It is also a classic book about a funny kid (aj) at a beach in summertime hanging with his friends the whole summer. But the bad news is that his enemy (andrea)is also coming to spend the whole entire summer with him and his friends! But there is a really cool life guard(Mr sunny) that is not who aj thinks he is .Just because andrea thinks he is cute ,so that ruins what aj thinks about him.
Mr. Sunny Is Funny written by: Dan Gutman pictures are by Jim Pallot . What I like no ,Love about the book is the Mr. Sunny was actually funny , the whole book was funny it me laugh from page to page . What I like about the book was that it was a page turner like “ooh I have to know what happens nexts” the book h ad my eyes glued to the page . Also it was such a clear text and such a quick read too so it didn’t take me long to read . love those surprises in the book too !
There’s nothing text related I didn’t like about the book. They should make it in a hard cover. The rest of it was wonder , cool , awesome , funny and marvelous . So what the book is all about is . . . Aj hates school. He also hates Andrea . He ‘s graduating Second grade .so it the summer time now and his parents rent a beach house and invites one of his classmates from school , out of all the kids it just has to be Andrea .the only reason she here is to crush over the life guard Mr. Sunny. Will they be a happy couple.
I thought this book was really fun because of the romance and the words that remind the reader about summer. This book is about a boy named A.J who is ready for summer. They go to a beach house and he finds out that he has to share the beach house with his enemy, Andrea. She is smart and nice, and kind of bossy to him. A.J thinks she's a know it all. His summer is ruined! When they get to the beach, they find a lifegaurd plowing sand. As soon as Andrea sees him, she falls in love. They are all talking aboput mouth to mouth, when they see a shark in the ocean. The lifegaurd goes to chase the shark away, but it turns out that it is just a long distance swimmer from Austraila. The lifegaurd entered a sandcastle contest that gets ruined by the long distance swimmer. When it's time for the contest, the long distance swimmer goes cliff diving and goes out of control. He crashes into the lifegaurd's special castle and ruins it. The swimmer apolijizes and makes sure that he won't do that or swim again. That's because he is gonjg to be a teacher. A.J's teacher!
I liked that A.J. read comic books in the car and he didn't even get car sick! Is that even possible? I liked how Mr.Sunny thought he was being chased by a shark but It was only Mr. Granite! I love this book!
My daughter really likes these books. She's in second grade and doesn't read as much as I did and still do so I'm happy to have her read anything. It's not great literature but it works for her.
Order really matters in this series. If I dare read out of order, I miss long running gags. And what's a long running gag worth if you read it in reverse? Nothing!
In a similar vein, Andrea takes to reading Shakespeare in this book. Like many wanna look smart characters, she quotes it. Of course, what's makes it hilarious is how she mixes and matches quotes. It's like she's a walking "quotes from the Bard about love" book, stringing together quotes from wildly different play with wildly different contexts (not to mention tones). Humor is 'dirt out of place' and here the dirt (including literally dirt, because, of course) is definitely not where it should be.
uses words like “brownnoser” which alludes to vulgar words like as$ kisser multiple times in the book. also talked about day dreaming that a classmate drowned because the kid didn’t like that classmate. not suitable for kids, don’t know who would even allow this to be made. it’s such a terrible book. PARENTS read the books before giving them to your kids. this book makes bad/mean behavior seem cool and funny.
The whole family had a blast reading/listening to this one about A.J.'s summer vacation at the beach. Besides having his vacation invaded by a Shakespeare-spouting Andrea, A.J.'s gang of school buddies shows up to tease him, there's a sand castle building contest, and--wait for it--shark sightings! Grade school is so much fun.
This book was a read-aloud for my homeschooling curriculum and it was hilarious. I love that it's from a little kid's perspective and the characters in the book are all relatable. It is so funny and my kids were giggling the whole time we read the book.
We normally read two chapters, but we ended up reading half the book in one sitting. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
I read this book with my second grader and we were both amazed by how hateful and mean the main character was. Writing about "Being mean to someone show's that you like them", being dishonest and just an all around not nice person?? Really? Are we encouraging emotional abuse at such a young age? Was excited by the cover when we picked this up from the library, but won't be borrowing another.

Every day at the end of 3rd grade lunch, I read to the 3rd graders. This was our first book to read. All the students wanted it when I was done. They laughed and laughed. We can't keep the series in our library. it's cute but predictable but works really well for taking about predictions and inferences with 3rd graders

Andrea was pretending to down so that mr sunny would notice her, but she actually was drowning and AJ had to actually save her, and had to do mouth to mouth resuscitation, and all the kids we here saying that they loved each other

I rated this book a 5 out of 5 because I like funny books. Who wrote the book Dan Gutman, and is illustrated by Jim Paillot. This book is about a boy named AJ, and his family who rented a beach house for the summer. AJ's friends showed up at the same beach for fun and adventures.
