A Concise Guide to SSL/TLS for DevOps: 2nd Edition

Rate this book
This book, 'A Concise Guide to SSL/TLS for DevOps' is an introduction to SSL & TLS in application and operational environments and as such is a more technical in depth study than is typically the case in the Executive and Management series. This book aims to cover the theory and practice of SSL in working operational situations. Consequently, although no prior knowledge of authentication and encryption methods is required, a good deal of this text will involve certificate and encryption theory, OpenSSL installation and configuration, SSL vulnerabilities and best practices in SSL certificate management.

The book had potential, and I sort of liked it, but I have decided to round my 2.5 rating down, instead of up. It is well explained, and the language and explanations are accessible. However, the language needs to be cleaned up a little, as there are many typos.

The biggest flaw is that the book is too short. It doesn't explain all the basics that I would expect from a book like this. I don't think this makes the reader qualified to properly and securely set up SSL on a web server. It does in my opinion, seem to lack a great deal of configuration details.

The book deserves an expanded edition, with more technical reference material, and maybe a bit more on how to maintain the configuration as new standards are developed and old ones are scratched. It could also include a section on updating OpenSSL, and other stuff that makes a reader able to properly do the basic recommended maintenance and implementation required.

In the current state, I'd give it 2.5/5, because it's just not sufficient, in my opinion.
