One girl... two werewolf packs... what will she choose?
Samara’s first date with Luke, the hot new guy at school, didn’t go exactly the way she planned. She figured they would stargaze and maybe share a kiss at the end of the night, but she couldn’t have prepared for what really happened. She was bitten by a wolf and not just any wolf—a werewolf.
After she shifts for the first time, she meets the Alpha of her new pack in the woods. While he answers a lot of her questions, he remains in his wolf form during their meetings to keep his identity a secret from her. She wonders who this mysterious wolf is and why he bit her.
As Samara begins to learn more about her family secret and how it plays into her new life as a werewolf, she realizes that she has an important decision to make—one that could hurt the ones she cares about the most. She must choose between two werewolf packs: the one that she’s destined to be in and the one that she feels she belongs in.
Howl is a suspenseful tale of secrets, betrayal, and forbidden romance.
I'll preface this by saying it wasn't the worst thing I've ever read, but it wasn't very good either.
Most of my problem with this was the writing, some of my problem was the story itself, and some of it was how it ended.
The Writing: While the writing wasn't so riddled by mistakes that it was holey, it had numerous ones that could have easily been remedied by a decent editir (or even a mediocre one probably). The language and structure of the writing was middling at best, and while it never sunk to the level of bad fan fiction, it never reached the level of good fan fiction either. I felt like this was written by a high school student who hadn't gotten to the finer points of finesse and how to craft interesting writing. There wasn't enough development making the lack of passion grating and even silly, there was too much telling without showing, and as a result it was difficult to become attached to the characters.
The Story: So this is about werewolves, obviously. But what sort of werewolf society allows for their kid wolves to go around killing each other? How can you have "potential" mates? That basically discounts any concept of loving someone for who they are AND it means a weird instalove thing that is beyond annoying. And she doesn't even know the damn boy!!! Ugh, no. Also, why would she even consider joining a pack that's planning on killing her, with her best friend and brother apparently just aokay with the whole thing? Like, really? Is anyone here likeable? No, me thinks not. And is it just me or does Sam snap at her "mate" a lot and without much care about him?
The Ending: No spoilers, but this was a pretty big cliffhanger. You didn't get anything resolved. You're left with a pretty dramatic moment. And you don't really know why or what is fully happening. Sure, meant to reel in readers, but it didn't work for me. It was just irritating.
So the verdict: I wouldn't recommend this book. The author needs way more experience and probably some writing classes before I'd consider another of her books.
Fifteen-year-old Samara McKinley is not your average teenager. Unlike her best friend, Emma Taylor, Samara’s life does not revolve around partying and trying to fit in at school. In between playing the peacekeeper for her troubled family and crushing on the cute new boy at school, Samara sets out to stay to true to herself. Luke finally asks her out after a game of beer pong at one of Emma's party. At first, Luke and Sam have great chemistry and Luke plans a romantic stargazing date. But that all changes when she is bitten by a wolf. Samara begins living a double life – human by day, wolf by night.
Samara is finally approached by the wolf that bit her who mysteriously explains that he is her Alpha but can't tell her exactly why he bit her yet, who he really is or who is in the rest of her pack. Her Alpha can speak in her mind both as a wolf and human and no one else can do this but her Alpha and her Mate. Soon another Alpha approaches her and reveals that she should be on their pack because of her bloodline but because she got bit she could be on either pack. Sam will have to choose between packs, friends, and potential mates.
As Samara watches her relationships with those closest to her fall apart, she finds refuge in the mysterious wolf that bit her. Determined to keep her alter-ego secret from her family and friends, Samara soon discovers that her family has a few secrets of their own – secrets that could turn her life upside down forever.
I enjoyed the Briar Creek Vampire Series from the Morse Sisters and automatically wanted to read this new shifter series. I wasn't disappointed! The story is easy to lose yourself in and a great story that you won't want to put down trying to figure out who the mysterious Alpha and pack members are. The world the Morse Sisters have developed is compelling and I can't wait to read more. This book is a steal at this price being well written and edited.
I don't tend to give one star reviews, but this book was terrible. There were so many plot holes, grammatical errors, spelling errors, contextual and sentence structure problems, and terrible world building that it was a chore to finish. The characters were uninteresting and the writing was childish. Unfortunately, I bought this whole series without reading a chapter first but that is my fault. I scanned through the others in the series and they are just as bad.
I really should have liked this book ... right? I mean we have werewolves and romance and drama .... but nothing meshed. To me this book was like a movie gone wrong.
Problems
FIRST Samara didn't ask any of the right questions, I mean all the way through the book I was pointing out obvious "surprizes" and thinking of questions that would have made the tranisitions go so much better for her but instead she was wrapped in her own little world and didn't notice anything outside of her own sucky life. Is this one point or two??
SECOND The love felt fake. ALL OF IT! Okay so 15 (almost 16) and falling in love I might be able to understand but her best-friend Emma the slut I definatley didn't get. I could see one two or maybe even half a dozen guys at age 16 but seriously, being with a new guy every week and sleeping with all of them. And even Samara and her being so obsessed with herself being a virgin... and parents think that we get our ideas to have sex at younger ages is because of our friends/school environment ... Samara's love doesn't seem very real to me, yes your first love is always your hardest but it was like "oh cool your my mate you should totally be wanting to have sex with me now, oh and now you are super dreamy too!! ... That's not how is works sunshine >_<
THIRD This one is probably a really lame reason but the vegatarian to meat lover! It just kind of seemed all thrown together, they don't mention that she is a vegatarian until the night that she scarfs down a pound of roast beef. AND SHE DOESN'T EVEN FLINCH! If I were a vegatarian I would be puking because my stomach wanted the meat, maybe the main character should have gotten sick and the pack have to save her by feeding her meat and then she runs into the forest because she can't live with the fact that she just ate animal and, hey there's Seth, I wonder where my brother is going...
Give me a pen and a copy of this book and I could turn it into a masterpiece.... Actually probably not, it's too far gone for that :(
I really tried to like this book but by the end it was missing.... well everything. I will not be reading the next one, the author screwed up this one too badly :( :(
I haven't read a book that I absolutely had to force myself to finish in a long time. The book was lacking transition from one scene to next, the one action scene was cut short for the cliffhanger. I will not be reading the rest of the series.
Howl (Howl Series Book 1 ) ❤️🔥❤️🔥 absolutely loved this book!! I really wish books like this had been available when I were younger. The story line is engrossing and the characters are well developed. I can't wait to start reading the next book in the series! This book 📕 was an incredible cliff-hanger that leaves you begging for more. Definitely recommend this series and the two sisters..
I torn with this book because while I enjoyed bits of it, I found most of it to be frustrating and with nothing new added to the genre, there was too many cliches. For this review I'm going to list my likes and dislikes and see how we get on.
Dislikes.
Samara. She is the MC and I find, if I don't immediately connect to the main character, then it's hard to like the story. She frustrated me no end! She gets bitten by a wolf on her date and honestly, does nothing about it. She was way too calm when it happened. I mean, come on. If a wolf bites you, you would freak!! Then when the bite clears up so fast, she just kind of shrugs it off! THEN when she finds out she is a wolf, she takes it in her stride!! Any normal person would be freaking out in some way!!
The dreaded love triangle. I HATE them!!! I may not be a teen anymore but when I was I never knew anyone who went through a love triangle. It's so prevalent in YA that it puts a lot of people off books. This particular triangle just felt so wrong and unreal. It felt like the second choice was thrown in just to throw it in! Her first choice was cliche as well. I mean a stranger comes to town that happens to be her possible mate!! UGH.
The ending!!! This made me want to through the book across the room (I was reading on my kindle so I didn't!!) It was so abrupt and just seemed like the author stopped writing the scene and pressed published. I don't mind a cliffhanger if it's well done, but I do hate one that ends so abruptly! It ruined the story for me.
The way the author made her so special. Of course the main character had to be special! I mean that hasn't been done to death before, right!! She becomes a wolf but she is extra special! Everyone wants her to join their pack and are willing to fight over her!! It was so predictable and annoying really.
Then we have the 2 main packs that want her! The alpha of one is horrible and pure evil and the alpha of the other is nice! Another cliche!! One pack has people she loves in it and the other has a new person she only met (not going to say much more about this because of spoilers) so 2 guesses which one she thinks she will choose!!!

OK, I trying to think of what I liked about the book and if I'm honest, I'm struggling to find some. I did like a few of the secondary characters more than Samara. I liked parts of the plot and thought that if there weren't so many cliches in there, it may have been slightly better. I think the only thing that saved this book was the fact that I listened to it rather than reading it. I think if I was reading it I wouldn't have finished it but because Meghan Kelly was reading it and did an amazing job, as always, it gave the story a little bit of life.
In all, I felt this was just a forgettable read. There was too much cliches and not enough of the authors own spin. In all honesty, I don't think Ill continue on with the series because I just didnt care what happened to the characters, and I know myself that if all the books end like this one ended, Id just rate them all the same!
Meghan Kelly, as I said, did an amazing job of bringing a drab story to life. I can't fault her performance and she was the only thing that kept me listening to the story.
*I received a copy of this for review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*
What I liked: -Writing style. I felt the writing style in this book was a little better than it was in the first Briar Creek book—and I liked the brief Briar Creek namedrop in this book. The writing was a little more consistent, and it felt more mature. -Declan. I liked his character and found him to be the best character in the entire book. He was patient and understanding and blunt, which was the kind of friend Samara needed. However, simply calling him the main character’s best friend does not actually make him her best friend. They only hung out like once, and he wasn’t even really mentioned until like halfway through the book. Until she finds out he’s a werewolf too, she barely even thinks about him, and if they are best friends, Samara must be a crappy friend. -Lilly. I also kind of liked her—I seemed to like the secondary characters more than the main ones. I thought her storyline would have been a much more interesting one and she would have made a far better heroine. I also thought her worries and hesitation about accepting the werewolf lifestyle was the most realistic part of this book.
What I disliked: -The ending. I hate it when an author ends the book with an action scene that they decide to cut in half. That is one of the biggest copouts there are in my opinion. Why would you not finish the action scene and make the ending of the book explosive and awesome? Did they cut it out just to lure the reader into the next book? That really bothers me. -Samara. She had a couple of moments where I kind of liked her character, but for the most part, I just found her stupid and hard to relate to. She gets bitten by a wolf while on a date and doesn’t react, and once she becomes a werewolf, she just accepts it. She doesn’t really question it, fight it, or have any problems dealing with what being a werewolf entails. That’s another huge copout—making the main character super special and awesome.
Overall, this book was okay. I probably wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone other than diehard werewolf fans that don’t mind a case of insta-love, a stupid heroine, and a boring plotline. I don’t think this series is worth continuing if I have to pay 2.99 for each sequel after this one. 2.5
Howl by Jody Morse. I want to start off by saying that I gave this book three stars because it was a good book. It was not a 5 star book which is like a life altering book that will force me to compare all other books to or a 4 star book that has has somehow captured my loyalty to the writer forever. This was a three star book because it was, simply put, good. The story line is a simple werewolf plot with the protagonist, "Sam," becoming a werewolf that all the local packs want because of her potential for having so much power as a descendent from the most powerful werewolf of all time. Sam is ultimately forced to decide between two packs which is problematic because she are not longer able to associate with any other packs (at least peacefully, anyway) and she has people that she cares about in both packs. Once she chooses a pack, a war will be fought between the two packs. I hated, hated, hated how the book ends. I felt like we had a lot of build up for nothing. I get that it is to be a cliffhanger to entice the reader to get the next book to find out what happens but I am a strong believer that each book in a series should be strong enough to stand alone and not rely on following books. That is just my personal preference and is not meant to criticize. I did like the characters and I am interested in where this series will take its readers. I think that the werewolf thing is pretty overdone but this book had enough uniqueness that it didn't get muddied with the rest of the werewolf books out there. Plus, even though the werewolf stories are overdone, I have to admit that they are a guilty pleasure of mine.
Quick Info Standalone/Cliffhanger?: Standalone Part of a Series?: Yes ---------------------------------- Meeting the Characters Samara Luke Jason Seth Colby Declan ---------------------------------- Final thoughts What the everliving crap is this? The idea of this book is pretty good but the actual book is just I can't even get the right word. There is a love triangle. The whole "we can't tell you" bullocks that really amounts to nothing. The 'bitchy' best friend. There is no point in this. Samara herself. The sun shines out of this characters ass, and there is NO reason. Shes bitten by the other pack so she'll be THEIR pack but her family including her brother are in the other pack which is where she should be. And we're meant to be happy? What? This storyline had somewhat promise but in actual practice this probably takes worst book of the year. (yes yes its Feb but my point stands) Would I read again?: No thank you Would I read this author again?: I'd rather not if I'm honest! Would I continue on with the series?: No No NO
This book is a very fun read. I loved the storyline. It has great characters like Samara, Seth, Luke, Emma and Colby. Samaria was bitten by a werewolf which started her change. She has a big decision to make that will affect her and two packs. This book has some good mystery and action. What will Samara do? Well, I guess I have to read the next book in this series because I'm dying to know. This was a great read. I recommend this book to teenagers and older. I loved it !!!!!
Well I liked this book very much. It pulled you right into the storyline. But it stops too soon so I guess I'm going to have to get book 2 to know what happened. Are they fighting ? Did she get into the wrong pack or the right pack? Did she find out what was making the other pack so much stronger? What happened to Luke at the lake? So many questions. So book 2 where are u?
The book had potential, but it felt like a first time book writer’s rough draft. The teenagers felt more like 11 year olds playing pretend. And please what parent wouldn’t be involved to help with something so life threatening. I do believe with adjustments it could have been a lot better.
This book was terrible. I had to set it down after only getting to 123 pages. The writing style was awful and the characters felt flat and had no emotion to them. I felt like I was reading a poor fan fiction.
I wanted to like this book. I wanted to like the concept. The problem? There wasn't enough explanation in the book for what was going on, why certain (completely undeveloped) characters were so important, or even what is supposed to be so special about the main character (other than she's female and can reproduce). The entire book seemed focused on how to HIDE important information from the reader. Then, the absolute disrespect to the reader: the book ended with what I am assuming was some kind of major conflict, but without even explaining what the fight was about, without revealing all of the characters that were involved in the fight, and without revealing the outcome of the fight or how it affects the main character. I guess the authors were going for a cliffhanger to convince readers to buy the second book, but this just frustrated me that I wasted time reading this book and I will not fork over more money to be fooled again in a second book.
Feels like it was written by and for middle schoolers. It also feels boring. Nothing about it is new. It feels like those horrible free books on free apps. Might not finish
Content: Cursing Sex ed class (completely odd and unnecessary) Running naked
I see a good foundation for a story in this first instalment, but it needs refinement to really hook the reader. While the third-person narration isn't my usual cup of tea (I much prefer the immediacy of first person), the core plot has promise.
Samara's dilemma – being torn between her brother and her romantic interest – is an okay plot, her internal struggle makes it interesting. The suspense of how she'll choose definitely makes me want to read the next book.
Beyond that, I would like to know about Samara's bloodline. What makes her so desirable? Is she destined for great power? So far, the first book focuses primarily on establishing Samara’s ordinary life: her friends, and family, and the introduction of the werewolf packs.
Overall, It's not the best story but also not the worst. If you're looking for a light and entertaining read and can overlook some flaws, give this book a try 😉.
AudioBook Review: Stars: Overall 3 Narration 4 Story 2
So – this is wholly a YA, leaning to teen listen with characters that border on the stereotypical. Sadly, while there were some clever moments in the use of werewolves, the characters themselves were rather thin and underdeveloped, or presented with quirks that needed far more than a quick mention (or repeated and often overused phrases) to build them with some depth.
In short, Samara is fifteen, a good girl who is obsessed with being just that, with a best friend who is the poster child for party-girl central. She’s got a difficult life at home (we are told often) but her hesitancy in asking the right questions or actually looking at the situation before just forging ahead according to whim of the moment is frustrating. When she’s finally asked out by her crush of long standing, and she is then bitten by a wolf, her life starts to change.
As a wolf, Samara is finding things changed – two alphas wanting her to join their packs, with no real explanation as to why she was turned. Oh yeah – she has to make a choice because of strife between the two packs, and her bloodline allows her to make that choice. Confused yet?
Let me elaborate – we have a convoluted storyline of the wolf, we have the teenaged girl hiding her wolf side in school and at home. And we have secrets. Lots of secrets – all leading to an ending. Wait. There is no real ending. Not a one. Not even a solid conclusion to bring us to some sort of satisfaction. A HUGE peeve of mine – I’m cool with a cliffhanger for an ongoing major issue (the wolf pack wars could be that) but something solid and important should have been decided. And wasn’t.
Narration has been provided by Meghan Kelly, the second or third title I have reviewed that she has narrated. Her performance was solid, capturing Samara and her friend’s voices with a tone that gave them a ‘teen’ edge, and her male voices didn’t overreach into cartoony-overact. Her performance and the emotion that she brought to a book solidly lacking in substance kept me listening on, a clear bonus for a story so full of issues.
In short – I wouldn’t recommend this book – but I would most certainly take a chance with another title from this narrator.
I received an AudioBook copy of the title for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
This is a first book from these authors for me,it is the first book in a series. The storyline is enjoyable..nothing better then reading about werewolves..right?The story had its good parts and bad parts. The good,I enjoyed the characters bantering, getting a feel for Samara's home and school life.I was drawn into the book..it kept me reading so thats always a plus. The Bad.There is a part in the book when Samara is Bitten by a Wolf its a game changer,However she is bitten and its like oops paper cut.Not I was just attacked by a wolf lets get some emergency help..no she was just bitten not a big deal at all. The way the Characters acted after that was rather unbelievable..I had to read it twice to make sure I read it correctly. This may just be something nit picky on my part but having to read Samara feels this way,Samara went there,Samara decided to do this was flat out annoying.I would have rather read She chose to do this,She wanted that etc.It got so repetitive..I wanted to shout that I knew the main characters name already.I also found it really odd that Samara's parents were referred to as Mr.McKinley and Mrs.McKinley.Again it may be nit picky on my part but im so used to reading,"Her mom said, or Samara's Dad said etc. Not Mr.McKinley said.I feel like some basic editing needed to be worked on. That being said if you can overlook certain aspects of the book then its a very very enjoyable start to the series. At .99 on the kindle its not to bad.Ive started the 2nd book and am enjoying it so far.Its a new twist on a Cute werewolf series.Give it a chance Read it and I hope you enjoy it.

Samara McKinley is friends with the most popular girl in high school, Emma. Emma is always having house parties. At one in particular, Samara notices that the new guy, Luke, has been staring at her all night. Samara has been crushing on him bad. She finds out later that night that Emma has a crush him. Luckily for Samara, he blows off Emma when she makes a move. Later on at the party, there is wolf that seems like it’s going to attack but it doesn’t.
Samara has never seen a wolf up that close. Luke finally makes a move and asks Samara out. The date ends abruptly when she gets bitten by a wolf. Not only does she have to worry about this. Her brother, Seth, his having bouts of anger problems and often leaves the house for a few days at a time.
Luke also starts to act distant when Samara needs him most. Samara turns into a wolf at night. She knows she can’t talk to Emma about it. She doesn’t know who to trust or what is going on.
I haven’t read anything by these authors before, but I really liked this, especially since I’ve been on a werewolf kick lately. I liked that Samara was mature for her age and didn’t act like a lot of the other girls at her school did. I liked Luke, but I wasn’t over the moon for him. I’m not sure who I want her to end up with. I just was annoyed at some things that Luke said. I might just be picky though. If you like werewolf romance stories, you should give this one a try.
Let me first say that I LOVE the paperback cover of this book it is gorgeous! This is a very clean book and I recommend it for the teens that like werewolves. We start off our story with Samara who is a normal teen that has best friends, goes to parties and even has crushes. Until she goes on her first date and that is when things start going crazy for her. She gets bit by a wolf and this opens up a whole new world for her that she never knew existed. The crazy thing is that the packs want her to be on their side and she has too chose one or the other. It is a huge decision for her to pick because she knows people on both sides of the packs. The ending left us with a pretty dramatic ending that will make you want to read book two to see what is going to happen next. I can only hope that Samara will try to get answers or at least find out more about her grandpa because it seems that he may have left some information behind for the "female" werewolf of the family. Or at least that is what I gathered. The story line is very simple not much drama or action which I think some people may enjoy. For me I enjoyed the book and I think I am going to have to get book two in paperback to match this one.
It was a good start to this series. The book was written well. It kept my interest throughout the book. You could tell the characters are going through the normal high school drama. They also have the additional drama and issues of being werewolves.
I did enjoy the characters. Samara is very family orientated and loyal. She's also a typical high school female with learning who she is and dealing with her love life. She seemed to take being bitten by a werewolf harshly at first, but she got used to it. I could tell she was frustrated with her Alpha not letting her know who he is.
Luke seemed like a decent guy. Even though he liked Samara, he tried to give her space knowing that her decision she had to make could affect them both. He didn't want to complicate her decision any further than it already was.
The members of each pack had different and strong characteristics. You could tell how well each packs' members blended with their own pack. Many of their personalities were similar or had similar views.
** I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review **First off...I love Meghan as a narrator...she is very nice to listen too...she speaks clearly, and reads at the perfect pace....she makes me laugh when its appropriate and I love how she gets very dramatic at times....I just wish she was given better material...because I absolutely adore her!!! I would put her up there with some of my ATF's Like Tavia Gilbert....I see good things to come for Meghan!
Howl is a young story...very YA...I usually love YA...but not so much this one..its repetitive...predictable...and just not for me...I do like Samara and Luke....they are super cute together...if you are a young person who like's werewolf stories, with sweet romance and lots of hi-jinks...you will like this story...The ending was cute, the pack is adorable...and I wish them the best...I don't think I will continue this series...but I see its potential...and if they have Meghan on board I think it will do well...
Not the best wearwolf book I have read but I still enjoyed it. In some cases the first books are not always the best but then again they should grip the audience. For me this book did that as I always wanted to read the next book. The one thing that I will say is that the book in fact the series would have been better if it was written by one author.
I say this because there were many times throughout the series when it would jump from one bit to another without any link between the two parts. The series almost comes across as though authors got too exited to publish and didn't read through the chapters before they were published.
But despite what was just mentioned I rate this book four stars as it is not the best but each book kept me wanting to read the next.
I don't ever give books a bad review. I'm a big reader and have read over a hundred books and there not many I didn't enjoy. And even if I wasn't crazy about it I'd finish it. But this book was downright HORRIBLE! I couldn't even finish it. I forced myself to read page after page before I finally put it and and was like...This is crap. The wording was something a twelve year old could have written. The plot was boring and Samara was just a boring character. I have no interest in finishing this book or really any book by this author (her name isn't even memorable) I put this book far FAR away from be at page 60 and I'm surprised I made it that far. I was surprised when I noticed the Book has almost 4 stars. I wouldn't even give it the one star. Horrible...just horrible. Smh. -_-
I bought this because it was $2.99 for all 4 books on my Kindle. It looked like a good series. Which don't get me wrong I liked the story line and the Characters. It's a bit repitive. I skimed most of it becuase they would repeat or say the samething they said at one time in the book. They did this a lot so I skimed through all 4 books. Around the 3rd book is when it got interesting for me. But almost all these books were pretty predictiable. There needs to be some corrcetion in spelling and grammer. Like they will say " do you want to be on my pack?" It should be "do you want to be in my pack?" They kept using on instead of in when saying stuff about being in the pack this got annoying.
This book is really aimed at the younger kids. Probably between the ages of 10 to 13. Although I would have liked for the writing to be a bit more developed, I can understand this book wasn't written with my age group in mind. The story was interesting, and I could tell this author will continue to develop, because she already has the gift of great storytelling. You can teach a person to write using perfect grammar and incredibly descriptive words, but you can't teach imagination! Jody Morse has it.
