Shadows of Us: A Novel

Rate this book
L. N. Nino’s debut novel “Shadows of Us” is a monumental literary tour de force in which every facet of human nature is touched by his satyric vein and his shockingly dark humour.
In the fictional country called the Richford Isles, the narcissistic, pseudo-intellectual grandson of a financial magnate tries to win the love of a mysterious girl while balancing himself between the tragic and comic ends of life. He becomes more and more entangled in a web of hidden intrigues until he traps himself in a fatal and surprising conclusion.
A tale masterfully told and so woven in a complex fabric of literary references that you will want to reread it many times in search for hidden symbolisms and quotations.

Somewhere in this book lies a fantastic story. It is an interesting read which bares the human soul for what it wants, lusts and craves for. Trying to finish this book, however, was a chore. Let me share this to make myself clear : “The mysterious roundness and smoothness of the toilet were particularly intriguing, at least until he realised that these properties were purposefully devised to ease the conduction of the excreta to their final destination.” (Excerpt From: L. N. Nino. “Shadows of Us: a Novel.” iBooks)

The use of unnecessary adjectives is overwhelming, twice as many words than necessary, grammatical errors plenty and what irked me the most - not getting to the point. It appeared that the narrator of the story wanted to sound intelligent but in the end, to me, he barely got to his point before drifting off on another.

Having said that, Shadows of Us is not all bad. If you are able to bypass the unnecessary, the reader (with a lot of patience) finds herself in the midst of a plot that is brutal and twisted.

Disclaimer: I got a free copy from StoryCartel in exchange for a honest review. I got only till 27 percent of this book.

The writing in this book was fine, but the omniscient narrator got annoying after a while. The biggest problem with this book was that there was nothing interesting going on. I never really wanted to know what would happen next. I just kept on reading, waiting for the story to kick off, but at 27 percent this still hadn't happened and I was simply done waiting.
