High-schooler Kii Kogami is stuck in a rut, loathing the monotonous doldrums of his everyday life. If only something exciting were to happen, something magical. As fate would have it, Kii is about to get his wish, but in a way more terrifying than anything he could have imagined.
When a little girl clad in gothic lolita attire appears at school and starts to gruesomely bludgeon, dismember and mutilate all who cross her path, while chanting the mantra “Magical Girl” from her corpse-like lips, the school devolves into a state of bloody chaos.
Just how will Kii escape from this murderous magical girl? To make matters worse, the magical girl’s victims reanimate and join her killer rampage as minions. Is there no way out of school for hapless Kii Kogami? And even if he escapes, what will be left of the world outside?

I shouldn't have taken a recommendation from the "customers also bought" section on Btooom's page on Amazon.
I'm all for gratuitous violence but it has to at least make some sort of sense. There has to be some substance or at the very least a character I can root for.
3.5 stars! Bumping it up a little because something about this title was ... Magical.
I've always wanted to use this gif:
Seriously. I kind of knew what to expect. The description does a bang-up job of what you're in for. However, the level of extremity it's taken to was quite a surprise. This isn't your soft-baked Zombie Apocalypse. It's not even an exceptionally sequenced B-Horror Movie. This is it's own monster, and I'm intrigued.
If you have soft stomach, I would not suggest this title. The bloody rampage begins nearly from page one and rarely lets up. You will not have a reprieve. These Magical Girls mean business, and they're about to blow up, disembowel, dismember, and all-around mutilate anybody in their path. No hesitation, no explanation. You get within their eyesight, and you're pretty much doomed. Most horror manga stories have a loop hole. A way out of the mess. Some kind of weakness for the enemy. At this point, there is no weakness for the Magical. They reanimate - even if you bludgeon their heads in. Nobody, not even our "hero", is safe.
This volume is filled with non-stop action. The run-for-our-lives starts off rather quickly, and the small band of survivors are put to the test on every page. We get a little backstory, not much. I think there will be more to come later. The only thing you have to cheer for is their survival, because we don't have enough characterization to feel attached. I was willing to let that go, because I got a great apocalypse story that didn't shy away from "This is seriously the end of everybody."
My only gripe would be the character of Yoruka. She's the staple "busty girl." And I don't care how much the author likes big boobs, he needs a lesson in anatomy and physics. These are human-defying breasts, and sometimes it was hard to overlook that. It became gratuitous in a few scenes, along with a handful of unnecessary panty-shots. That really could have been left out, but that's a risk you have to take in this genre (especially from a male author). Hopefully that subsides throughout the plot, because it's not helping the art. I think it's harming it. I mean, sure, those images are dark and gory, and some of them are honestly fucked up (excuse me). But it's still well done! So, leave the blimpo boobs out of it, please. For everyone's enjoyment.
I'm still looking forward to future volumes. I like a good bloody romp, as horrible as that sounds. And I really liked the original and twisted take on the end of days. Taking something so kawaii as Magical Girls (though some of those stories are dark, too, people), and making them mindless killing machines. We still need a reason behind this mess. We still need a bit more depth for Kii Kogami. From this exciting first installment, I can only hope the race for survival continues at an equally fun rate.
Kogami is just a normal teenager living his everyday boring school life when one day a little girl shows up in front of his school and decides to blast away his teacher's head.
Then 10 minutes later a army of invading magical girls just like the one at the entrance come from the sky to wreck havoc on humanity. Death, carnage, slaughter, whatever you want to call it. Kogami is on the run with a few students but every turn they make, every chance they try, people are ruthlessly murdered.
This is a zombie apocalypse type story but instead of zombies you can extremely creepy little magical girls floating around possessing people they kill and murdering everyone. I don't know how this will end but I was entertained enough even if it's stupid as hell. A 3 out of 5.
If I had to describe Magical Girl Apocalypse in one sentence, it would be the result of what you'd get if you mixed High School of the Dead with Attack on Titan, with the ultraviolence of Gantz, and a bit of the aesthetic of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. If that sounds at all interesting to you, then read on.
Much like in Attack on Titan, horrifying, seemingly unstoppable creatures have appeared and begun wreaking havoc on the general population. But instead of towering humanoid figures, they're diversely creepy magical girls. Also as in Attack on Titan, their origins are (for now at least), ill-defined, at best. Unlike Attack on Titan however, the people that the magical girls kill rise up again, with at least some of the powers of the particular magical girl that killed them.
As in High School of the Dead, you've got a desperate, ragtag group of teenagers fleeing for their lives, while the world goes mad around them. Unlike High School of the Dead, half of the group isn't made up of improbably busty women...there's only one of them here.
And really, that character (Yoruka), embodies one of the only low points of the art, because Sato apparently has no idea how breasts work. I don't care how much inertia was involved in some of those panels, Stretch Armstrong would wince at some of the angles those things end up in. The rest of the book is generally quite well-drawn: Characters' faces are expressive, the action scenes are lively and often quite gruesome, and the designs of the magical girls are surreal and effectively disturbing. That said, this is a very gory book, at least on par with the likes of Gantz or Deadman Wonderland, if not even more extreme. You shouldn't get too attached to any one character, because there's a chance they might get graphically ripped to pieces in a chapter or two.
Magical Girl Apocalypse isn't a masterpiece of literature, by any stretch of the imagination, but it hits a lot of the right notes for both horror and action, namely regular people fighting for their lives against seemingly unstoppable foes, never knowing who might die next, the mystery of where these things came from, and the strong sense that nowhere is safe. Sometimes a thrill ride is all you're looking for, and as long as you can deal with the copious amounts of gore, and Yoruka's anatomy-defying breasts, Magical Girl Apocalypse delivers. Volume one was a complete impulse buy for me, and after reading it, I'm very much looking forward to volume two.

This manga blow my brain away. For real?? I thought Attack on Titan is the craziest. No words for Magical Girl Apocalypse. The incident started when a 'strange little girl' came to the school and blew the teacher's head off. Kii Kogami thought he was still dreaming, but apparently not. The nightmare is real and about to begin.
If you're fans of sadistic action & bloody gore, you might like this one. Whew... It was freakin' creepy with super fast paced. I couldn't even process it without reading twice. Welcome to the end of your world!
I thought I would enjoy this book since I love zombies and weird mangas and this seemed the perfect fit with it's zombie/magical girl gore. Unfortunately it was quite disappointing. The artist used gratuitous panty shots constantly, particularly as a girl was being ripped to pieces or had just had her head blown off. If that wasn't enough, I was unable to cheer for any of the characters since they were all slaughtered so quickly.
Searching for free manga on bookwalker.co.jp my eye was instantly tempted by the front cover artwork. So I chose this one for random immersion practice in Japanese. Artwork is above great. Idea too. Gothic Lolita Zombies turn everyone into a zombie. MAGIKARU! There is no plot beyond that. At all. There is gore. Lots. The above combination is enough to keep me happy, language level is appropriate for upper beginner, and I will keep reading the next volumes until the offer expires.
I'm sorry but I feel it's trying too hard to be a mixture of Magica Madoka and Deadman Wonderland. It's more about a dense MC surrounded by a harem group of cute girls just try to attack evil magical girls who are pretty much making zombies out of their victims.
Interesting concept but it just didn't sway me enough to read more because of its unoriginality and just the character development needed to be desperately better...
The story was somewhat weak. The art was...interesting. This was just a random book I picked up at the library and wonder what it was. Usually I don't read horror manga but this looked mildly interesting. In essence it's a lot of gore and that's about it. Characters are dispensed within pages of being introduced. No real attachment to the characters or explanation to the story.
Wow. That was pretty gory. I appreciate the satire and the humor, though the inclusion by the writer of a girl with ridiculously large breasts was annoying. I like the character; she's just ridiculously drawn.
Ok... I kinda hated that... It's just a bunch of blood and gore. And like this may be a spoiler but also I don't really feel like it is, but like everyone dies and the deaths hold like no weight at all!! Like basically everyone dies before you get to know them and the ones who aren't dying are personally really uninteresting and I'm not invested in them at all. ngl I kinda hate them all lol. Also the fan service really sucks. Ok so in like general I don't really enjoy like any fan service but like this is just kinda straight up terrible. Like you'll get a shot of this girls cleavage on the same page that people are exploding. So ya... I kind of hated that. But also at the same time I'm intrigued of what is going to happen but like I probably shouldn't waste my time on a series I'm going to hate reading :) So like I personally suggest that you shouldn't read this series but like also I'm not your dad so you can do whatever you want.
I'm always on the lookout for horror manga so of course I had to pick this up.
I skimmed through the first couple pages before purchasing this so I had an idea of what I was getting into. What is it about you ask? We start off with our main character in his classroom one school morning. We see how he interacts with some people and quickly learn he is bored of life and has kind of an "I'm better than you", attitude. He walks past one of his childhood friends being bullied and doesn't say a word, he doesn't respect his teachers, etc. In the middle of a test he sees a girl (refer to the cover art), outside of the school gates. He witnesses her smashing his gym teachers head in and leaves the classroom. All of a sudden all the students are being killed off and him along with a band of surviving students try their best to make it out alive.
Now, I know that it seems like a lot to take in but all of that happened within about the first twenty pages. This also justifies why I didn't put a spoiler warning as it happens very early on in the story.
Here are my thoughts: I think the artwork is great(especially the gore). It is a very quick paced manga that keeps you on your toes to see who dies next and where exactly these "magical girls" came from. If you have a problem with fanservice you may want to pass on this as it pops up a lot and I only expect that to increase in the coming volumes honestly. I would give it a 7/10. I'm not particularly attached to any characters but I do enjoy the basic plot of this so I will continue to pick this up. Nothing fantastic, but definitely a fun read.
UPDATE: I decided to review this series and I couldn't make it past volume six. The first volume is okay but things just go from bad to worse the longer the series goes on. Not worth owning and I will be selling the series. The "redemption" arc of the perverted cop was just a whole lot of nope.
I was intrigued by the title, but neither the writing nor the art were worth my time. Why is the Magical Girl Apocalypse happening? Why is it that the main characters are able to improbably [magically] survive when everyone around them dies? Why did the author-illustrator think that I would be willing to put up with the grating repetition of the word "Magical!" from the Magical Girls and their victims for a whole series? There's not even a hint at something deeper in Volume 1, such as a child's clumsily-worded wish gone horribly wrong or a demonic magical girl mascot recruiter or aliens appropriating cartoon bodies for step one of Earth colonization.
Since Magical Girl Apocalypse Volume 1 doesn't seem to have a purpose beyond mindless violence, all that's left is the art. And that's a disappointment too. Kentaro Sato is a talented artist, but there's only so many ways you can draw head explosions. I was also disgusted by the violent fan-service images. A girl is killed when a magic-infected zombie shoves his hand up between her legs and out through her mouth. A main character's fall from the height of a tall building provides the reader with a super-detailed half page looking up her skirt and then a panel devoted to her enormous breasts bouncing as she makes impact (before vomiting blood in the next panel).
I'm taking a hard pass on the rest of this series.
No i on umiera. No to MC ucieka do kibla, bierze kij bejsbolowy i wraca do sali. Tam siedzi jego crush pomiędzy martwymi ciałami innych uczniów, no to wiecie. MC no to musi być odważny!!! leci jej na pomoc i ja ratuje!!!! yippie! 🙄 no ale to na nic, bo koniec końców umiera. Następnie wychodzą: koleżanka z dzieciństwa, jakiś typo, i ktoś tam.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Our main character is an unimportant high school student who finds himself and other students struggling to survive when evil dolls start attacking the school (and the rest of the world, or Japan at least). The dolls are called "magical girls" by the media. They brutally slaughter everyone they encounter and then turn their victims' remains into zombies, which also seek to slaughter as many people as possible.
Not my cup of tea, but I knew it wouldn't be. I had flipped through a random volume at the library and saw all the cringe fanservice. So yeah, lots of that (panty-shots, giant boobs that twist into weird shapes, bizarre borderline-pedo female body structure). Tons of gore, too, some of it really uncomfortable.
I still might read the next volume though. Kind of like when you see the remnants of a car accident on the side of the road and you have to look; you can't help the morbid curiosity.
2.5 the art is fantastic, but..... when you have the phrase "WE'RE UNDER ATTACK BY MAGICAL GIRLS" I expect far more hilarity- I was thinking this would be more like Clubbed to Death Angel (a.k.a Bokantsu Tenshi Dokura-Chan)it is not..... it's more like a really weird chapter in Higurashi or School Days or something, but because of the title, and it's attacker's mumbling "magical" I couldn't take it seriously like I could with a series like Higurashi (or Umineko, Mirai Nikki and/or Elfen Lied). I really don't know who this series is for demographic wise. Seriously confused here....
This series is seriously gross. I didn’t really care much about the gore (and it is super gory) but there are multiple rape attempts/scenes and one of the main characters is a necrophilic rapist and pedophile. This series is frankly disgusting and you shouldn’t waste your time on it or anything else the author has written. How the hell did this get published???
I was drawn to this for the artwork/style - hence the two stars. Otherwise, this has no story whatsoever. At least not in volume 1, and it doesn't interest me enough to keep reading the series. *Sad panda*
A weird little girl in a gothic lolita dress turns up at a random high school and precedes to slaughter almost everyone in it with a giant hammer. The only word she says is 'magical' over and over. The dead then rise and they too begin to slaughter without reason.
It's a simple premise, but each chapter adds something new and ups the ante on the insanity. It's bloody and violent, but it's also very funny too. I have no idea how they're going to keep it going in multiple volumes, but this one is certainly entertaining. I can't wait to read more.
This book is about this high student named Kii Kogami. One day a horde of Magical Girls descend from the sky and (to put it nicely) all his classmates and everyone in her path go away like the Dodo. Turning into undead monsters that are puppets to the Magical Girls. And so Kogami is trying to survive everyday well meeting others in the process.
I actually really liked this manga book. I have yet to get into the second volume but the first one is good.
This book has A LOT of gore (even if its in black and white, haha) and it's a dark book but I don't mind that. So before reading this book, take that into thought. Because there is some parts that could be disturbing to some.
Manga d'horreur assez sanglant.
Ultra-gratuitous gore AND unlikable characters - my least favorite mix. Color me suprised when I saw the recommended reading level of 10th-12th grade... I wouldn't recommend this to any kids.
